While, in the USA, Sony Masterworks celebrates the 40th anniversary of CTI Records with a reissue series that started in October, Creed Taylor himself does the same in Japan! Besides the eagerly awaited release of the CTI All Stars reunion "Montreux Jazz Festival 2009," three compilations selected by the Japanese staff of Wax Poetics (a bi-monthly American magazine focused on all aspects of hip-hop, record collecting, and musical history) will be released on November 3rd.

The CTI Jazz All-Star Band concert filmed live in High Definition at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 7, 2009, will finally hit the stores on November 3, distributed by King Records in nothing less than 3 formats: CD (CTI KICJ 593 with eight tracks and 65 minutes), DVD (KIBM 253) and Blu-ray (KIXM 49), with bonus material in the 82-minute video formats mixed by Rudy Van Gelder in 5.1 Dolby Digital. In the end of the screen credits in both the DVD and Blu-ray formats, Creed pays tribute to the late Freddie Hubbard, dedicating the project to him. One more reason to regret that the opener of the Montreux concert, Hubbard's "Red Clay," wasn't selected to the final tracklist.

The band line-up includes CTI veterans -- flutist supreme Hubert Laws, master percussionist Airto Moreira, and ubiquitous trumpeter Randy Brecker (who never recorded as a leader for the label, but took part in countless dates as sideman during the 70s and co-led the all-star CTI Superband, aka Chroma, in the 90s) -- plus Bill Evans, Mark Egan (another Chroma member), Jeff Watts, Russell Malone, Niels Lan Doky, Todd Bashore and special guests Flora Purim ("Misturada") & Jamie Cullum ("Use Me"). John McLaughlin & George Duke also sat in with the band during the encores, appearing on Benny Golson's "Blues March."

Stanley Turrentine's CTI anthem "Sugar," Weldon Irvine's "Mr. Clean" (made famous on Freddie Hubbard's second album for Creed, "Straight Life"), Hubert Laws' "Bimbe Blue", the gospel hymn "Amazing Grace" (also featuring Laws, who recorded it for CTI twice, on "Morning Star" and "The San Francisco Concert"), the Jamie Cullum tribute to Esther Phillips via Bill Withers' "Use Me" (covered by Esther on "Alone Again, Naturally"), Airto's "Misturada" and his legendary vocal/pandeiro solo (here titled "Afrika e Brasil" - sic) are among the selected tracks.

Wes Montgomery's "Road Song," featuring Russell Malone, was filmed at the San Javier Jazz Festival on July 14, 2009, and appears as bonus track (in a stereo mix from a Spanish TV broadcast) on the DVD and Blu-ray issues, both including a 12-page booklet with Marc Myers' liner notes (unfortunately, printed in Japanese only, as usually happens with Japanese releases) and the lyrics of "Use Me." Oh, and there are ridiculous typos (typographical mistakes) in the back cover of the CD too: John McClaughlin (instead of McLaughlin), Claude Knobs (instead of Nobs) and so on.

The filming crew isn't listed in the booklet, but it's credited on the screen. Synthezied strings were overdubbed (by whom?) on "Misturada" during the mix sessions at Van Gelder Studio. Btw, once again Rudy showcased his mastery, improving tremendously the sound quality of the original tape - actually, the sound in the concert hall was horrible, very low, with no pressure. The same kind of miracle done by Al Schmitt on Diana Krall's "Live in Rio" DVD. On its turn, the video editing cut off all of Flora Purim's work as MC at Montreux, where she introduced the songs and told stories about the musicians. The editing ammended Claude Nobs' introduction of the musicians, since he did some mistakes and even referred to Mark Egan as "keyboardist". Oh, and the CD/DVD/Blu-ray sequencing differs from the one of the original concert.
