June schedule on Riverwalk Jazz
Riverwalk Jazz Returns to XM
Beginning June 2, Riverwalk Jazz will be heard weekly on XM's Real Jazz Channel 70, Saturdays at 9 AM and Sundays at 9 PM ET. Thanks to all those who wrote into XM asking that the program series be reinstated, and to fan Eric Hoffman who led the charge. Hoffman writes, "I'm grateful that XM came to recognize how important this show is. It's great fun to listen to, educational and really gets to the root of jazz, not just 'Dixieland.'"
Making his first Riverwalk Jazz appearance on a show devoted to James P. Johnson, a key figure in the evolution of jazz piano, is the renowned piano virtuoso, composer and educator Shelly Berg (pictured above), who until recently was a Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. Shelly has recently been appointed as the new Dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.
6/7 Riffs and Shouts: The Building Blocks of Jazz
Nothing gets us in the groove like a catchy riff. Trumpeter Bob Barnard and The Jim Cullum Jazz Band heat up the bandstand with a show devoted to jazz riffs.
6/14 James P. Johnson: The Supreme Tickler
Broadway veteran Vernel Bagneris, piano ace Shelly Berg, and The Jim Cullum Jazz Band team up to salute James P. Johnson the Dean of Stride Pianists.
6/21 Midnight Moods: The Small Combo Sessions
Good things come in small packages. Tune in for a program featuring the best of the small combos that have taken the stage at The Landing.
6/28 In Old New Orleans: The Story of Jazz Legend Bunk Johnson
The Jim Cullum Jazz Band celebrates the music of Bunk Johnson. And we’ll hear his stories of life in New Orleans by special guest, Vernel Bagneris.
Note: Riverwalk Jazz public radio broadcasts are recorded well in advance of their airdates. These listings do not reflect live appearances at the Landing in San Antonio. For what's happening at the Landing, check our calendar page.
