"Festival," Matt Ulery's 7th album coming out soon with release concerts in Chicago, Oct 7 & 8

Prolific and earnest bassist/composer, Matt Ulery, helps to spearhead a musical movement of art and beauty emerging out of the vibrant, blossoming scene in Chicago with his 7th album, "Festival." Featuring his quintet (Loom) and an expanded 27-piece jazz orchestra (Loom/Large), this major work in three parts will be available on double vinyl, CD, and digital download formats on his own label, Woolgathering Records (WR-0003), October 4th, 2016.

"Festival" presents a rich variety of instrumental music with dramatic intensity and dynamic, choreographic aesthetic design with deep historical roots in American jazz and folk forms while celebrating the survival of experimental art music presentation.

Part 1 begins boldly with Ulery's first ever arrangement on record, a monumental version of Jimmie Rowles' jazz classic, "The Peacocks," featuring violin soloist, Zach Brock (Stanley Clarke, Snarky Puppy) and jazz orchestra including five saxophones, five trumpets, 4 trombones, tuba, piano, bass, drums, and violin section, followed by an enterprising original epic for this ensemble, "Hubble," also featuring lead players such as Greg Ward and James Davis.

Parts 2 features the core quintet including Rob Clearfield/piano, Jon Deitemyer/drums, Geof Bradfield/clarinets, Russ Johnson/trumpet, and Ulery/double bass introducing six pieces exploring new resounding grooves and lyrical lexicon.

Part 3 is something of a secular parade as Ulery transitions to tuba and Clearfield to pump organ as the quintet channels the spirit and emotions of social ritual and traditions.

Deeply acknowledging the lineage and legacy of jazz and American music, "Festival" celebrates the values a community recognizes as essential to its ideology, its social identity, and to its historical continuity and physical survival.

For a decade, Ulery has been the leader of his own groups and frequent collaborator based in Chicago. He has produced and released 6 previous albums of all original music as a leader including his three most recent releases of critical acclaim (Top 50 albums - NPR), "By a Little Light," "Wake an Echo," and "In the Ivory," on Dave Douglas's Greenleaf Music record label in 2012-2014.

Recently featured in Vanity Fair's "Millenials Shaking Up the Jazz World," Ulery recently contributed as a bassist/improviser on Makaya McCraven's album, "In the Moment" (International Anthem), as string arranger on Wild Belle's "Dreamland," (Colombia Records), and has an on-going collaboration with the 4-time Grammy winning sextet, Eighth Blackbird.

"Festival" will be presented at the Green Mill in Chicago on October 7 & 8. More tour dates will be announced soon on www.mattulery.com

Alex Levine's "Toward The Center" out next month

Alex Levine is a guitarist, composer and improviser, currently living in New York City. He graduated from the University of Michigan jazz studies program in 2012, where he studied with Geri Allen and Frank Portolese, and is an alumnus of the Banff International Jazz and Creative Music Workshop. In New York, he has continued his studies with Miles Okazaki and Henry Grimes.

Alex has played with groups led by Francois Moutin, Geri Allen, Marcus Belgrave, and many others, along with leading his own projects, performing concerts throughout the United States and Europe. He's a founding member of Polyfold Musical Arts Collective, whose focus is to support the creation, presentation, and ongoing development of creative music, and to foster artistic expression through education and outreach.

On his own words:

The body of work represented on Towards The Center was first developed during my time at the University of Michigan School of Music. The earliest composition on the album, "Ritual Dance", was inspired in part by contemplative practices introduced to me by Professor Martha Travers. "Ritual Dance" refers not only to physical movement, but also the merging of individual minds into a group consciousness. Creating, practicing, and performing music is a ritual that transforms and transcends boundaries between individuals, musicians and listeners. Towards The Center is a process by which each musician, and listener alike, relates to the mysterious gravity that exists at the center of a group interaction, and improvises with a focus on the total group dynamic. At the core of each performance is a collection of ideas, compositional and formal frameworks, and shared practices and strategies that each of us draws upon to intuitively realize a collective musical statement.

It was essential to me that the music presented on this album be created through an intuitive and unhurried process. So, rather than presenting the music in a written form, with specific pre-determined arrangements, all of the music captured on this album was communicated and developed aurally. This process required each musician to engage deeply with the material and to fully internalize each element of the compositions, and enables a greater fluidity and flexibility in our execution of the music. I am eternally grateful to saxophonist Marcus Elliot, bassist Ben Rolston, and drummer Stephen Boegehold for their creativity, musicianship, and commitment to this project. As a quartet, we have been collaborating for almost five years, and our individual relationships go back even further. Much of the work preparing for Towards The Center occurred during a three-week period of intense composition, practice, and group development in Poschiavo, Switzerland, as a part of the UNCOOL Artists in Residence program sponsored by Cornelia Mueller.

Towards The Center is dedicated to the visionary musician, poet, and artist, Henry Grimes. Since moving to New York in 2012, Henry has provided me with immeasurable creative wisdom and guidance during many hours of private lessons, playing, and conversation. Henry's brilliance as a musician is equalled by his profound poetic statements. The newest composition on the album is a suite of music entitled "Adama," inspired by Henry's poem "Adama and Porquory" (2006 Signs Along The Road). The poem, and the suite, is a spiritual history of human beings, beginning with total Harmony, unity of purpose and understanding, to disorder and conflict, and disparate human mythologies created to define the inexplicable forces that have shaped our universe. It is a cycle from togetherness to apartness, and could be heard from any starting point.

After being featured on Claudio Roditi's debut album, "Red On Red," recorded in 1984 and that has just been reissued on CD this month in Japan, she released seven solo CDs (and counting) and one DVD live at Warsaw Jazz Festival, and collaborated with Ivan Lins, Paquito D’Rivera, Jay Ashby, Justo Almario, Cesar Camargo Mariano and James Taylor, as well as with renowned producers Creed Taylor (on "Red on Red" as well as on "The Devil Toothpick" soundtrack) and Jeff Webber.

Kenia’s long time commitment to promoting Brazilian music and culture includes hands on clinics and workshops in phrasing and Brazilian rhythms, including an introduction to Brazilian rhythms for children.

More Singer Songwriter Needed for $15,000 Dir to Supe Placement

MELANCHOLY SINGER/SONGWRITER SONGS with Male or Female Vocals are U-R-G-E-N-T-L-Y needed by SUNDAY for a NON-Exclusive, $15,000, Direct-to-Music Supervisor placement in a Prime Time TV show on a Major Broadcast Network.

TAXI Tip: The Supervisor found a couple of songs through TAXI that were very close, but he's asked us to run the search again and have our members focus on lyrics that are about overcoming life’s obstacles, stress of life, secrets, pain, getting through the day, etc. They DON’T want relationship-driven songs for this pitch!

NOTE: We recently ran this as TAXI Listing #U160918SS. If you made a submission to that Listing, please send different material this time around.

“I Shall Not Walk Alone” by Ben Harper
“While We Wait” by Jack Johnson
“Come Clean” by Tristan Prettyman

Down-Tempo, acoustic-based Songs with melancholy lyrics and a moody, introspective overall vibe should do the trick. Your vocal performance should have an honest, sincere, and touching delivery. A stripped-down Song with just an intimate vocal and acoustic guitar could easily work for this request. A small, subtle ensemble behind the singer could work as well.

Moody and wistful lyric themes will work well for this pitch. Please AVOID themes that focus on relationships! Universal lyrics that avoid references to specific names, dates, times, brands, and places will make your songs more appealing, but they’re not absolutely necessary. Please do NOT copy or rip off the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

The estimated license fee for this is $15,000. This is a Non-Exclusive, Direct-to-Music Supervisor placement, so you’ll keep 100% ownership of your Master and Composition rights (no publishing splits), plus you’ll also get 100% of the sync fee and any applicable performance royalties. You must own or control your Master and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis by a screener who was hand-picked by the Music Supervisor - No full critiques. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Sunday, October 2nd, 2016. TAXI #U161002SS

Jazz Bakery presents The Dave Stryker / Eric Alexander Organ Quartet tonight in LA

Jazz Bakery Presents, this Friday, Sep 16, 2016 - 8:00 pm @
Nate Holden Performing Arts Center (4718 W Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA):
The Dave Stryker/Eric Alexander Organ Quartet!
Parking: limited Street parking and venue adjacent lots.
Information Line: (310) 271-9039
Direct Ticket Line: (800) 838-3006 ext. 1

Dave Stryker has been voted one of the Top Jazz Guitarists for the last several years in DownBeat Critics and Readers Polls. According to JazzTimes magazine, “Stryker is a perfect combination of accessible grooves, melodic expression, blues feeling and soul… with gospel-like joy throughout. Surging through Dave’s assorted gifts is his unique strength... a rare rock-bottom groove that can sometimes top today’s jazz complexity sweepstakes.”

Eric Alexander, a brilliant tenor jazz saxophonist currently signed to the HighNote label, is known for his sophisticated hard bop and post-bop style. Critics claim listening to Alexander, unfettered and at length, is one of the greatest treats in jazz. Eric’s imposing improvisation seems to have no boundary. One of the few players who is more influenced by Dexter Gordon and George Coleman than by Coltrane and Rollins... He takes his heroes seriously and it has certainly paid off in a string of albums engineered by the late master Rudy Van Gelder.

Jared Gold is not your typical B-3 party animal. On every tune, after laying down his funk bona fides, he keeps streaming content and delivers fresh ideas. Gold’s harmonic concepts are outside the organ genre as we have known it.

McClenty Hunter has become one of the most in demand drummers on the New York jazz scene. He has toured with Eric Reed, Javon Jackson, and Ceder Walton among many, and is currently a member of Kenny Garrett’s band.

Singer & Trumpeter Bria Skonberg releases "Bria" on Sept. 23, her first album for Sony

Okeh Records, a subsidiary label of Sony Music, announces its first release from singer, trumpeter, and songwriter Bria Skonberg. With a unique fusion of modern-day pop sensibility, combined with sizzling musicianship, Skonberg makes a firm claim on fresh territory in the sophisticated pop landscape pioneered by Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall, and Michael Bublé. Titled "Bria," the album features standards plus five original songs and is available September 23.
Skonberg aimed for "a sense of allure" on her new album, "music that is both curious and exotic, playing with tension and storytelling." She credits producer Matt Pierson with helping her tie together the best aspects of the music she's been exploring, in a quest "to fuse my love of classic jazz with worldly rhythm, percussion, contemporary songwriting, and more.
Bria is supported by some of the top musicians on the New York scene: Evan Arntzen on sax and clarinet, drummer Ali Jackson, bassist Reginald Veal, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, and pianist Aaron Diehl. They provide Bria with an unfailing blend of organically imagined eclecticism.
Noted as a Millennial "Shaking Up the Jazz World," according to Vanity Fair, Bria Skonberg is a self-described "small town girl" from Chilliwack, British Columbia, who hightailed it to Vancouver straight out of high school and earned a degree in Jazz Trumpet Performance. She developed her songwriting chops while working with TV/jingle producer Paul Airey, known for his work with the likes of Warner Bros. studios and the National Hockey League.
Skonberg is an established touring artist with numerous club and festival performances scheduled throughout 2016. In addition, in an upcoming issue of Down Beat magazine, she's recognized as one of "25 for the Future." All in all, it's an impressive present and even more promising future for this welcome new voice.
Bria brings a millennial flavor to a collection of originals ("Curious Game," "Wear And Tear", "Down In The Deep") and standards such as "From This Moment On," "Que Sera Sera," "You're Getting To Be A Habit," Lionel Hampton's lush ballad "Midnight Sun," and the opening track "Don't Be That Way."

People are going to talk about you, especially when they envy you and the life you live. Let them. You affected their lives, they didn't affect yours... you will eventually lose someone you love & love someone you never thought you'd find...

The Claire Daly Quintet plays Motown at Gillespie Auditorium, Sep. 20

Join us when we welcome the Claire Daly Quintet playing Motown revisited music from their VERY soon to be released new CD "2648 West Grand Boulevard - Jazz Interpretations of Classic Motown 45s" on Tuesday, September 20.  The Quintet features Claire Daly on baritone sax, Jerome Harris on guitar, Peter Grant on drums, Marcus McLauren on bass, and Steve Hudson on piano.  There will be two shows at 8:00 and 9:30 p.m.  For advanced sales and information call 212-222-5159.  Admission is $15, $10 for Students.

"2648 West Grand Blvd" was the Detroit address of Motown, and the repertoire includes "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever," "I Second That Emotion," "The One Who Really Loves You," "I Want You Back," "Cloud Nine (4:05)," "I'll Be There," "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game," "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted," and "Ain't That Peculiar," among other hits.
Claire Daly grew up in Yonkers, NY, affording her access to many jazz greats performing live in NYC. Her father supported her enthusiasm about the music and brought her to many live shows including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Lionel Hampton, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Benny Goodman and more. At the same time, she was hearing contemporary music with her peers at venues like The Schaeffer Music Festivals in Central Park. Her taste runs from the classics through the avant garde, and Claire still believes in the importance of hearing live music regularly.

She graduated Berklee College of Music as an alto player and traveled on the road with both jazz and rock bands, but her life changed significantly the first time she played a baritone sax. It happened to be the first horn Howard Johnson had owned, for sale by a mutual friend. "It was an epiphany. I felt like, There I am - this is my voice." Claire hasn't looked back and has become a well known, leading voice on the big horn.

Her first CD as a leader was released on Koch Jazz in 1999. "Swing Low" was received very warmly. Claire was nominated by the Jazz Journalist Association for "Best New Artist of the Year" and Swing Low was subsequently added to a listening station in the William Jefferson Clinton Library in Little Rock, AK as a CD significant to the President while in office. Since then, she has been a winner/nominee of many critic and reader polls and has won the JJA Baritone Saxophonist of the Year award.

"The Mary Joyce Project was composed by Claire and Steve Hudson. It is music dedicated to her father's cousin - Mary Joyce - who traveled by dogsled from Juneau to Fairbanks AK, solo, in unchartered territory, in 1934/35. Mary is an American hero and an Alaskan legend. Adventurous women run in the family. The piece premiered in Juneau. Claire has always liked a good theme and Mary made an unforgettable impression on her as a child when she came to stay with the Daly family.

Her move back home to New York from Boston was the beginning of her playing extensively as a freelance musician in NY. She struck up a lifetime collaboration with pianist/composer Joel Forrester (composer of the theme for "Fresh Air" w Terry Gross on NPR). Their band "People Like Us" released 5 CDs on Koch Jazz and they continue to play and record 25 years later. She was the original baritone player in the Diva Big Band, anchoring it's section for the first 7 years as well as doing multiple recordings as a side person (Taj Mahal, George Garzone, many more) and leading her own groups. Some projects include "Movin' On", "Heaven Help Us All", "The Honorable Hustlers" w beat boxer Napoleon Maddox, "Speak, Spake, Spoke" with wordslinger Kirpal Gordon, "Scaribari", "Rah Rah - a tribute to Rahsaan Roland Kirk" and "The Mary Joyce Project".

In 2012, The North Coast Brewing Co. in California produced a CD for Claire called "Baritone Monk" to promote their "Brother Thelonious Ale". It was on the Jazzweek Charts for 24 weeks - 9 of which were top ten. This led to headlining at the Monterey Jazz Festival, KC Rhythm'n Ribs Fest, Pittsfield Jazz Festival and more in addition to touring the United States with the quartet.

Her most current project is called "2648 West Grand Boulevard" and features jazz versions of Motown tunes from the Detroit years. It's on the Glass Beach Jazz label, produced by Doug Moody. This CD is very close to Claire's heart. It is likely that the first live music she heard was when she was under 10 years old. Her father asked to bring the kids in for a minute to hear The Supremes at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. The music and the spectacle were deeply influential to Claire, who grew up listening to the Motown sound as the soundtrack of her early years.

She continues to live in New York City, travel, teach (Jazz at Lincoln Center MSJA, Litchfield Jazz Camp), give clinics, teach privately and tour. Performing, listening, learning and mentoring young players are Claire's musical goal.

Tickets will be sold at the door,or call 212-222-5159 for reservations and information.

The ineffable magic of New York City fires the imagination of superstar pianist Lang Lang on his new album New York Rhapsody (Sony Classical) available September 16, 2016. He is joined by a wide array of special guests including Andra Day, Herbie Hancock, Jason Isbell, Jeffrey Wright, Kandace Springs, Lindsey Stirling, Lisa Fischer, Madeleine Peyroux and Sean Jones. From the haunting reveries of Gershwin and Copland to the in-the-moment intensity of songs made famous by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, Lou Reed and Don Henley, New York Rhapsody rediscovers the dazzle and the soul of America’s most symbolic city.

Following the release of the album, a star-studded concert special Live From Lincoln Center will air on PBS on November 25, 2016 as part of the PBS Arts Fall Festival. The video for “Empire State of Mind” with Lang Lang and singer Andra Day premiered on Town & Country.

“I made this album because I wanted to pay homage to the city that I love,” says Lang Lang of New York Rhapsody. “This city has changed the course of music more than any other in the last hundred years. It has inspired and enriched me beyond words and has become my home away from home.”

New York City feels similarly about Lang Lang. They just named Lang Lang the city’s first ever NYC Cultural Tourism ambassador. This is in partnership with NYC and Company in celebration of this year’s official “China-U.S. Tourism Year” as designated by Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Barack Obama.

For New York Rhapsody, Lang Lang joined forces with Grammy-winning producer Larry Klein to create an album that embraces the musical spirit of New York in ways both surprising and traditional. Inspired by E.B. White’s celebrated essay “Here Is New York,” Klein assembled musical ideas and energies that both reflect New York’s past and evoke its dynamic present.

The centerpiece of the album is a performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue featuring Lang Lang and multiple Grammy-winning jazz legend, Herbie Hancock in a two-piano version conducted by John Axelrod with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Surrounding it on New York Rhapsody are creative collaborations that reimagine songs reflecting the varying moods and experiences New York offers.

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, Jason Isbell gives a fresh edge to Elbow’s evocative “New York Morning” and Grammy-nominated R&B singer Andra Day adds a new dimension to the Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ hit “Empire State of Mind.” Kandace Springs gives a new treatment to Don Henley’s moody “New York Minute.” Singer Madeleine Peyroux recaptures the alone-in-the-city wistfulness of “Moon River,” the Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer classic from the essential New York movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

In one of the album’s boldest choices, co-arrangers Klein and Grammy-winner Billy Childs marry the Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim song “Somewhere” from West Side Story with Lou Reed’s “Dirty Blvd” from his classic album New York. Lisa Fischer’s vocal in the yearning “Somewhere” is a powerful contrast to actor Jeffrey Wright’s interpretation of Lou Reed’s indelible words in “Dirty Blvd.”

Next, Lang Lang is joined by violinist Lindsey Stirling on a spinning version of Danny Elfman’s theme for Spider-Man; and then by trumpeter Sean Jones on the West Side Story classic “Tonight” by Leonard Bernstein.

Bookending New York Rhapsody are perhaps surprising choices – quiet, contemplative pieces by New York’s greatest musical poet, Aaron Copland. To open, Lang Lang and Klein chose “The Story of Our Town,” from Copland’s 1940 Our Town film score, to evoke the dozens of small “towns” within the big city. To close, one of Copland’s last works, the rarely heard “In Evening Air,” reminds us says Klein, “there are always pockets of peace and quiet beauty” in New York.
