Liner Notes by Quinton Scott

CD 1

1. José González – Crosses
Sweden’s Jose Gonzalez released his ‘Veneer’ album in 2003 in mainland Europe, a good two years before the UK and US finally took notice of his wistful acoustics and unusual covers. Massive success was assured when his take on The Knives’ ‘Heartbeats’ featured on a Sony Bravia TV ad and ‘Crosses’, composed on a train journey to Gothenburg, also appeared on hit TV series ‘The O.C.’

2. Tosca – Heidi Bruehl (Album Version)
Tosca, aka schoolmates Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber, pay tribute to Ms. Bruhl, one of the first teen idols in post-war Germany and a film star throughout the ‘50s. Egyptian-born Parisienne Samiah Farah voices this smokey torch song.

3. Dani Siciliano – Come As You Are
“ I knew I wanted to cover the song and give it a kind of dark jazz standard sound. It just sounds like a jazz tune – it has that sensibility.” The London-based US ex-pat launched her debut solo album in style in 2004 with this brooding re-work of Nirvana’s classic. As good as cover versions get.

4. Nouvelle Vague – Dance With Me
The guardians of the spirit of post-punk Paris through their cheeky bossa re-works of new wave hits have created a phenomenon with over 200,000 copies of their debut album sold and a big solo career launched for occasional vocalist, Camille. This one covers a cult Lord Of The New Church oldie – there’s some very cool dancing in the video too.

5. Alice Russell – I’m Just Here (Wyndham Earl remix)
Having featured on records by Quantic, Bah Samba and more, this incredible Brighton vocalist is now firmly on the solo trail – her first full album, ‘My Favourite Letters’ from Summer 2006, was produced by Tru Thoughts label-mate TM Juke in only three months and featured this reflective slo-bossa beauty urging us to take a break and be “in the moment”.

6. Zeb – Magnifica
Milan-born Zeb earned his stripes as a DJ at New York’s famed late-‘90s Organic Grooves parties, with live musicians accompanying his soulful sets. These days, as a producer / musician, he plays guitar, bass and oud and adeptly weaves Arabic, bossa, funk and Afrobeat elements into his groovves for Irma, Turntables On The Hudson and more.

7. I-Dep feat. Elen Nascimento – Rustlica (Free Tempo Lounge mix)
This one is all about Tokyo – it was the breakthrough single for Hiroshi Nakamura’s I-Dep quintet and features Takeshi Hanzawa of Free Tempo adding the beats to the acoustic original. A yearning Brazilian song tailor-made for the Ibiza beach cafes at sunset.

8. Azymuth – Laranjeiras (4 Hero remix)
One of many remixes of the seminal Brazilian jazz fusion trio from Far Out Recordings on their ‘Misturada’ series that helped to introduce the band to a whole new generation. 4 Hero’s Marc Mac and Dego turned in this spacious, spacey bossa bump for the third volume in 1999.

9. Swayzak – Then There’s Her
London minimal tech-house legends since their acclaimed debut album ‘Snowboarding In Argentina’ in 1998, Swayzak’s James Taylor and David Brown have kept the quality high ever since. Regular vocalist Clair Dietrich guests on this dreamy, dubby piece from 2004. Oh, and their name? It’s evidently a variation on the Polish ‘Zwiazek’, which means ‘union’.

10. Boozoo Bajou feat. Joe Dukie & U-Brown – Take It Slow
A one-off supergroup as Germany’s leading downbeat dub controllers bring in the heavyweight vocal duo of Joe Dukie (Fat Freddy’s Drop) and original Jamaican DJ legend, U-Brown, urging us to take it nice ‘n’ easy when it comes to lovin’. Prime Summer reggae vibes from 2005.

11. Freddie Cruger feat. Desmond Foster – Over The Ocean
Many will know Stockholm’s Freddie Cruger for his dynamite B-Boy productions and genius mash-ups as Red Astaire on Raw Fusion and GAMM. Here, he proves just as adept at soulful reggae as he hooks up with Desmond Foster, ex-studio musician for Dennis Brown, Aswad and more, for a breezy love song from 2006.

12. Bonobo – Kota
Naming himself after a particularly sex-obsessed species of monkey, Simon Green’s Brighton-based Bonobo project has given us some fine downtempo music in recent years. This one dates back to his early days making beats in his bedroom – the hooky guitar line of ‘Kota’ ended up soundtracking an 02 mobile phone TV ad back in 2001.

13. Mawglee – Dreaming
A love of the hip hop soul of Massive Attack and his grandparents’ enormous record collection formed the base for Ross McLean’s mad mix of beats, melancholia and classical elements on his ‘Salt Water’ EP for Tru Thoughts in 2003. This acoustic sunset special snuck in at the end, complete with vocal snippets of the old crooner favourite, ‘Stardust’.

14. Black Mighty Orchestra – Ocean Beach (Cybophonia Cinematic remix)
Cesare Cera of Irma Records’ Black Mighty Wax created his orchestra using musicians from the Irma stable in 2000. Using the same lilting Henry Mancini ‘Slow Hot Wind’ strings sample as Dimitri From Paris on his 1996 track ‘Souvenir De Paris’, he turned to Irma producer Cybophonia aka Eros Minichiello to extend the groove and add some extra funky touches. A proper Summer anthem.

CD 2

1. Recloose feat. Lisa Tomlins – Spinnin’ Out
Matthew ‘Recloose’ Chicoine moved to New Zealand from his native Detroit in 2002, and he’s clearly settling in fine. Featuring a host of talent from Wellington’s live scene, his ‘Hiatus On The Horizon’ album from 2006 softened his broken techno edges in all the right ways – this warm, soulful beauty was one of the highlights.

2. Dom Um Romao - Lake Of Perseverance (King Kooba mix)
The eccentric Brazilian percussionist hinted at his great records of the ‘70s with his ‘Lake Of Perseverance’ album in 2001, drafting in top musicians like Eumir Deodato and Ithamara Koorax. A full remix album followed featuring this take on the title track by funky London production duo King Kooba.

3. Pastaboys feat. Osunlade - Chimes Of Freedom
Dino, Uovo and Rame aka Pastaboys have long been Italy’s soulful house heroes, specialising in subtle tech productions, spiritual vibes and deep Afro treatments. Here, they hook up with regular collaborator Osunlade as Atelewo – this one was so good that it appeared on albums by both artists in 2002 and 2004.

4. King Britt Presents Scuba feat. Lizz Fields - Our Time (King Britt's Funke mix)
From early days DJ-ing for hip hop crew Digable Planets and producing with Josh Wink, King Britt has become one of the names to drop on discerning house dancefloors. Here, he adopts his Scuba guise and drafts in excellent DIY Philly vocalist Lizz Fields
for a percussive, organic beauty about taking time out and making the most of life.

5. Gazzara – Spirit Of Summer (Jon Cutler Ambient mix)
A big one from Irma Records jazzman and producer Francesco Gazzara and the title track of his album of soulful Summer vibes from 2002. Jon Cutler keeps the airy tones of Jestofunk vocalist Wendy Lewis, chunks up the beats and brings a terrific walking bassline. Pure sunshine.

6. Nathan Haines feat. Marlena Shaw – Squire For Hire (Capricorn mix)
“Folks would come from miles around just to hear what the squire was puttin’ down….” Kiwi sax maestro Haines and the inimitable Marlena Shaw bring the style with a sexy tale about the coolest of jazz dudes, all wrapped up in a rolling 4/4 groove courtesy of his old mates Restless Soul, Phil Asher and Luke McCarthy.

7. Restless Soul feat. Nathan Haines – After Ours (Samba Phreek mix)
From initially being a moniker for Phil Asher and Luke McCarthy’s classy house productions, Restless Soul has developed into a conglomerate of major league DJ / producers including Aaron Ross and Modaji. This one features Phil and Luke at their best on a mellow latino shuffler featuring Nathan Haines and Reel People’s Mike Patto.

8. Soul Quality Quartet – Pressure
A new name to many, the Quartet (now a quintet) hail from southern Sweden and tour mainly throughout Scandinavia. Their 2004 debut album was electronics-free and a delight for all fans of high quality jazz, funk and latin - here, vocalist Almaz Yebio
is all in a whirl and considering drastic measures to escape life’s pressures.

9. Notenshun - Amarante
From his days running influential record shops like Flying, Lofty has become an influential DJ and producer as one half of East West Connection and NoTenshun. With German DJ / producer Werner Niedermeier on board, the latter’s debut album featured this joyous, percussive latin funk instrumental – a big one for soulful floors in Summer 2005.

10. Democustico – Rejoycing
Led by Mauro Berman, Azymuth vocalist Gabriela Geluda and producer / DJ Roc Hunter, Democustico unleashed a stunning album fusing Brazilian styles with Indian vibes and contemporary breaks during 2006. As well as alluding to the great Brazilian singer songwriter Joyce on this memorable downtempo bossa, Gabriela retains all of her spacious, joyous vocal style. Mesmerising.

11. Sabrina Malheiros – Cade Voce (Max Cole & Beatnik remix)
The daughter of Alex Malheiros, bassist from Brazilian legends Azymuth, Sabrina took latin music by the short & curlies in 2005 with her acclaimed acoustic / electronic ‘Equilibria’ album. A year on and a remix album of the lead tracks produced this space funk masterpiece from Straight No Chaser journo Max Cole and co-producer Beatnik.

12. Diesler – La Playas
Starting out producing sample-based beats ‘n’ breaks, Jonathan Radford aka Diesler shifted gears in 2006 with his expertly crafted ‘Keepie Uppies’ album. Here, he escapes the drizzle of his home in the old cotton capital, Burnley, for a sun-drenched groove - watch out for some top lines from Dan “The Burnley Horn” Smith too.

13. Voom Voom – Baby
The brainchild of Kruder & Dorfmeister’s Peter Kruder and members of the Fauna Flash collective, Voom Voom is a huge melting pot of their collective influences. Alongside the big basslines and all manner of house and electro hybrids, there’s warm, beautiful atmospherics like this little nugget. Now, where’s the beach…

14. Offworld – Nurnen Sun
DeGiorgio has quietly amassed a dense body of recordings since the early ‘90s under his As One moniker, influenced as much by the Detroit techno pioneers as by 1970s experimental jazz and fusion. In 2001, he created an all-new pseudonym for a full album, ‘Two Worlds’, re-structuring Azymuth tracks for Far Out Recordings.

CD 3

1. Marathon Men – Dreamz
“Our name? Well, making music is about years of hard work and we love the film too!” say versatile London-based French producers Freddie McQueen and Simbad. In recent years, you may have crossed their path via their tunes as Les Barons, Twitch and Heal - here, they betray their love for Pepe Bradock's lush techno and sample up Archie Shepp's 'A Sea Of Faces'.

2. Wordless People - Sunrise (Tiger Stripes remix)
Wordless People don't release many records but it's worth the wait when they do. Since 2001, Daniel Magg's collective have turned in a handful of tracks for Compost in Germany and this uplifting cracker for Slip 'n'Slide. Mikael Nordgren aka Tiger Stripes expertly steers the samba original into cooler house territory.

3. Black Mighty Orchestra - Psycho Killer
Irma Records label manager and producer Cesare Cera boasts some quality musical credentials - he started out as a drummer in Italian funk bands during the late '70s and later worked as a radio DJ. Here, he does a job on Talking Heads' 'Psycho Killer' with a fine sexy Italo-house treatment.

4. Stockholm Cyclo - Beginning People
By day, Stockholm Cyclo's Alexander Stahle works as a mild-mannered landscape architect, designing open spaces and parks. By night, he transforms Hulk-style into a heavyweight purveyor of soulful techno - this insistent, funky gem from 2004 featured some of his Swedish jazz musician mates including vocalist M Elino.

5. Clan Greco - Rotation (Eric Kupper mix)
Herb Alpert's 'Rotation' remains one of the defining tracks of '80s smooth fusion and it lends itself nicely to a house re-rub here. Clan member Massimo Greco plays the trumpet line and hands remix duties to prolific New York legend Eric Kupper (and we mean prolific - Eric has worked on over 1400 records!) to work his classy house magic.

6. Bamboola Prod. – Bahia (Club mix)
A big one for soulful house spinners like Ben Watt and Roger Sanchez when it leaked out on white label in 2004, this cool latin groover with loads of live musicianship hails from Belgium through DJ / producers Murvin Jay, Mr Suave and vocalist Philip Morgan Lewis. Schweppes even picked it up to soundtrack a club promotion tour.

7. Tiger Stripes feat. Simone Moreno – Vem Sambar
A cracking full-on latin houser direct from rural Sweden courtesy of Mikael Nordgren, featuring Stockholm's Simone Moreno from SUMO on vocals. Chunky beats, percussion and a string section drive this one but it's the snakey bassline here that causes dancefloor havoc. A big one for the Miami Winter Conference in 2005.

8. Rey De Copas – Frontera del Ensueno (Jerez de la Frontera mix)
In the pantheon of Ibiza classics, this one deserves a special plaque. Originally a massive hit for Fernando Garcia's Rey De Copas (meaning “King Of Cups”) when the first wave of Balearic beats spread across Europe back in 1990, it resurfaced and exploded again with new mixes during 2003. We can hear the drums, Fernando…

9. Da Lata – Ponteio
A Brazilian anthem from Edu Lobo receives a fresh tweak from the revered nu Latin combo Da Lata, led by Chris Francks and DJ Patrick Forge. As well as achieving classic status in its own right when it dropped on Far Out in 1998, this one helped introduce a wider world to the incredible voice of Sao Paolo singer Liliana Chachian.

10. Ursula Rucker with Lil Louie Vega – Release
We all need some Ursula Rucker. Her powerful half-sung, half-spoken delivery tackling slavery, love, sexism, politics and more has remained an uncompromising force within dance music and jazz. On this stylish groover with MAW's Louie Vega, Philly's finest laments lost lives within the housing projects and misplaced power following 9/11.

11. Notenshun – Cool Down
Old mates and co-producers Lofty and Werner Niedemeier aka NoTenshun put their cards on the table and reveal themselves to be proper old soul boys as they bust out some serious '80s boogie vibes. A crackling instrumental from their 2005 'Traffic' album on Chillifunk.

12. Difusion – Khameleon
From Far Out Recordings’ archives, this spacious future jazz bossa from 2002 still cuts through as essential Summer mood music. The moniker is a thin disguise for prolific producer DJ Venom aka Daniel Maunick, son of Incognito’s bandleader Bluey. Like the title, he changes his colours regularly and is as adept at jazz beats as high impact drum & bass.

13. Troubleman feat. Nina Miranda – Paz
Bossa from a different angle courtesy of Mark Pritchard, ex-Global Communication. His debut Troubleman project in 2004 successfully fused latin and Afro elements with beats and boasted more chilled moments too including this lilting Brazilian classic featuring Smoke City’s Nina Miranda. Mark now plies his trade down under in Sydney.

14. The Detroit Escalator Co. – Twilight Finding
A fascinating project from producer and painter Neil Ollivierra, Detroit Escalator Co. is rooted in Motor City machine music and reflects on an idyllic urban utopia based on clean lines and impeccable environments. Haunting late night ambience to see us into the sunset.
