"DownBeat" - September 2008

Cover Story
Ravi Coltrane -- The saxophonist has truly stepped out of the shadows of his father and mother. With his playing at as high a level as ever—leading his own projects and playing in the Saxophone Summit with Joe Lovano and Dave Liebman and in the Blue Note 70th Anniversary band—Coltrane has emerged as a stylistic innovator and daring improviser.

Features
Moss -- When Luciana Souza, Theo Bleckmann, Peter Eldridge Lauren Kinhan and Kate McGarry convened, little did they know that they would produce one of the most exciting sounds in vocal group jazz in a generation.

Courtney Pine -- The British saxophonist not only continues to push boundaries on his own, but has become a steward for a young, progressive U.K. jazz scene, helping to launch the careers of such artists as Empirical.

Kenny Werner -- The pianist’s Effortless Mastery may be more than 10 years old, but its influence is as strong as ever. After a recent flurry of creative projects, we caught up with Werner to delve into the process behind his work.

Craig Taborn — The keyboadist has a huge array of technology at his disposal, and he invited us into his home to check out his gear and show us a few of his tricks. But really, what he wants to focus on these days is the acoustic piano.

Pinetop Perkins — At 95 years old, the blues piano master let us pull up next to him at the piano bench to learn about what it takes to play the blues 88s.

Master Classes — Lynne Arriale, Pete Malinverni and Danilo Perez

Transcription — Keith Jarrett on “Golden Earrings” from The Cure
