New York, NY (5/3/07) Jazz at Lincoln Center's MIDDLE SCHOOL JAZZ ACADEMY (MSJA) students, under the direction of Eli Yamin, will showcase their talent in their end of the year concert on May 12, 2007 at 1pm and 3pm in Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Broadway at 60th Street.
The concert is free and open to the public. Entry is based on a first come first serve basis.
The showcase concert will feature performances by MSJA students playing the music of Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Chano Pozo, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Erroll Garner, Grachan Moncur, and Big Jay McNeely.
“Jazz is the only music I feel I can use to express myself. I can play a bluesy note when I don’t feel like myself, then happy notes when I have a happy day. That’s the language for jazz.” Keefe Martin, MSJA student, age 11.
MSJA is Jazz at Lincoln Center’s first formal instrumental instruction program. Second annual MSJA includes 14 students from four boroughs of New York City, in the 5, 6, 7 and 8 grades that were chosen by audition to be a part of the second annual MSJA. Each student was awarded a full scholarship, based on application, audition and parent interview, to provide tuition-free intensive jazz instruction throughout the school year.
The Middle School Jazz Academy is made possible with leadership support from the Altman Foundation and from The William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust.
Additional support for the Middle School Jazz Academy is provided by Deutsche Bank, Little Johnny Koerber, Judie and John LaRosa, Karen Pritzker and Alejandro Tawil.
Jazz at Lincoln Center gratefully acknowledges The Irene Diamond Fund for for its major support of programming in the Irene Diamond Education Center .
