Jaco Pastorius: "Trilogue" (JazzShots) 2010
Originally released on the MPS label, this legendary performance (taped live at the Berlin Philharmonic on November 6, 1976) was actually led by the late German trombone virtuoso Albert Mangelsdorff, and appears for the first time on DVD under Jaco Pastorius' name for obvious commercial reasons.
Anyway, it's a superb concert in an unusual trombone/fretless electric bass/drums trio that also features Alphonse Mouzon, the original Weather Report drummer who later joined Larry Coryell's Eleventh House band.
All compositions by Mangelsdorff, except "Trio Song" (co-written by Pastorius) and Jaco's famous solo number "Portrait of Tracy."
"Ant Steps on an Elephant's Toe," played as the encore, is considered by Pastorius' historians as one of the best tracks on the revolutionary bassist's discography, and was included on the best-selling CD compilation "Jazz Rock," produced in 2009 by Arnaldo DeSouteiro for Verve.
