Sand sculptures
For 48 years the pine groves in Juan-les-Pins at the French Riviera resounds with jazz of its best. Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie performed here, just as did Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Cecil Taylor or other contemporary musicians of their time. Since 1960 a bronze bust of the soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet can be seen in Juan. Now 24 artists approached the subject "Jazz à Juan" and produced sculptures of famous jazz musicians. Sidney Bechet is among them, again, as are Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. This time, though, their works of art will not be as durable, as they are part of a sand sculpture competition. (Nice-Matin)
