San Diego has launched some amazing jazz artists and Danny Green, a native of Southern California, is swiftly following in their footsteps. At twenty-seven years old he has managed to carve out a place for himself in the lineup of young jazz artists who seem to have a pulse on keeping the tradition of jazz piano alive while stepping boldly into the future through the use of cultural sounds and world music rhythms. Danny doesn't waste any time revealing himself on his solo debut CD, "With You In Mind". One of the next generations of pianists that offer the kind of depth and passion for music that will quench a jazz lovers thirst, Danny serves it up with intense flavor and sometimes an unexpected kick. Danny was stimulated to start working on "With You In Mind" in November 2007 after producing and collaborating with Caballero-Verde Quintet on the heels of their CD, "Past Due" (which featured trumpet, bass, drums, percussion and a very young Danny Green). In "With You In Mind" he focuses on Brazilian influences cradled in mainstream jazz and classical nuances.

Aside from "Suite For The Americas (track 10)," all of the pieces on this album are original compositions. As a composer, he always strives to do something unique with his music. As a result of Danny's musical influences his sound comes across to listeners as a pianistic mixture of Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, Danilo Perez, and Ravel with original compositions emerging from the sincerity of his soul.

San Diego-based independent record label, Pacific Coast Jazz (PCJ), announces the addition of San Diego-based Brazilian jazz pianist, Danny Green, to their roster of distinctive artists. Green's own independent label, Alante Recordings, will now be an associate label under the Pacific Coast Jazz umbrella. This affiliation anticipates the release of Green's first solo release With You In Mind, slated for a street date of January 20, 2009. Danny Green is equally versed in Classical, Jazz and Latin styles beginning his musical studies listening to his father play violin with his quartet and studying piano at the age of five. He shifted his attention towards Jazz and Latin music while in High School and has never turned back being first inspired by Ruben Gonzalez. Danny received a B.A. in piano performance at UCSD, where he graduated with honors and won the Jimmy Cheatham Jazz Award. He has studied with Rick Helzer, (Professor of Jazz Studies at San Diego State University), Kamau Kenyatta, Anthony Davis, Otmaro Ruiz, Marcos Silva, Jovino Santos-Neto, and classical studies with John Mark Harris and Luciane Cardassi. Danny also credits the CA Brazil Camp for developing his understanding of authentic Brazilian style and substance having participated in their program since 2006.

Since that time, he has been playing with some top musicians including Peter Sprague, Gilbert Castellanos, Quino McWhinney, Nena Anderson, Rob Thorsen, Bill Andrews, Christel Veraart, Kevin Cooper, Mark Lamson, Jovino Santos-Neto, Chico Pinheiro, and Edu Ribeiro. In 2006 he produced and released a CD with the group, Caballero-Verde Quintet entitled, "Past Due" which received some international attention. After that experience Danny felt confident to stretch out with his own piano trio revealing his love for Brazilian and Latin rhythms that are an integral part of his sound. In August 2006, Danny attended CA Brazil Camp for the first time and it was a huge turning point in developing his style. "Working with great artists there like Marcos Silva and Jovino Santos-Neto, I began to get a sense of how to make Brazilian music work in a trio setting, and I was exposed to so many different styles of Brazilian music. I came home from this workshop with new motivation and began arranging tunes off of recordings for my trio. This process, more than anything, helped me get deeper into the various styles and influenced many of the compositions on the CD. As soon as I felt comfortable in a specific style like baiao for instance, I would set out to write a piece in that style."

In "With You In Mind" he combines both Brazilian and Latin influences cradled in mainstream jazz and classical nuances. Aside from "Suite For The Americas (track 10)," all of the pieces on this album are original compositions that he wrote between Nov 2005 and March 2008. As a composer, he always strives to do something unique with his music. Even though some of his pieces lean towards conventional harmony, he manages to include some surprises that he hopes will enhance the music. "I like my pieces to tell a story by having different sections, familiar tags, and sometimes different solo sections for each instrument".

As a result of Danny's musical influences his sound comes across to listeners as a pianistic mixture of Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, Danilo Perez, and Ravel with original compositions emerging from the sincerity of his soul. Danny understands the essential nature of jazz and shares his joy with other musicians while continuing his quest for greater musical accomplishments. died Jan. 17, 2009, California)

The bass player and writer Whitey Mitchell died in California at the age of 76. Mitchell, who was the brother of bass player Red Mitchell, started bis jazz career playing with musicians such as Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa and Lester Young. He then moved to Hollywood and became a staff writer and story editor for several TV shows. In later years he returned to playing the bass again. Obituary: The Desert Sun.

Bill Henderson: "Beautiful Memory: Live at The Vic" (Ahuh) 2009

Bill Henderson's new CD, "Beautiful Memory," comes out today, January 20, from his own Ahuh Productions. Recorded live at the Vic in Santa Monica in 2007, this album is his first independently released recording.
Highlights: "The Moon Was Yellow," "That Old Black Magic," "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" (his very personal jazzy interpretation of the Elton John song has improved a lot since Bill cut it for the 1990 LaserVideoDisc "Red Hot & Cool II"), "Never Kiss and Run," "Living Without You" and "Tulip or Turnip."

Henderson plans a CD release event for Feb. 1 (matinee) at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, and will also appear at the Newport Beach Marriott on Feb. 14. His 83rd birthday bash takes place at Catalina's, Los Angeles, March 17. The singer appears monthly at Charlie O's in Van Nuys. Come May 17, the Palo Alto Jazz Alliance presents Henderson and Mike Melvoin playing the music of Mercer & Mancini. In early August, Henderson returns to the Litchfield (Connecticut) Jazz Festival.

Veteran jazz singer Bill Henderson is caught in classic swinging form, his vocal powers undiminished, on the CD "Beautiful Memory: Live at the Vic." Recorded at the Santa Monica club in March 2007, three days after Henderson's 81st birthday, the album is being released today, January 20, by his own Ahuh Productions.

"Beautiful Memory" is in many ways a retrospective of Henderson's repertoire. With his working trio, pianist Tateng Katindig, bassist Chris Conner, and drummer Roy McCurdy (famous for his association with Cannonball Adderley), Henderson performs such songs as "A Sleepin' Bee" (one of the standouts from his 1959 debut LP for Vee-Jay) and "You Are My Sunshine" (from the 1963 Verve album "Bill Henderson with the Oscar Peterson Trio"). Also included on the new CD are "Never Make Your Move Too Soon," the B.B. King hit; a rare vocal reading of "Royal Garden Blues"; and the seldom-performed Ellington number "Tulip or Turnip."

The CD marks Henderson's 50th anniversary as a recording artist. He made his debut on a 45 version of "Senor Blues" with Horace Silver not long after arriving in New York from his native Chicago. (It remains one of the Blue Note label's top-selling singles.) Between 1958 and 1961, Henderson recorded for Vee-Jay, with arrangements by Jimmy Jones and Thad Jones, and then for Verve, which released the 1963 album with Oscar Peterson, the biggest seller of the singer's career. Henderson joined Count Basie in 1965 at the recommendation of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and spent two years with the band.

In 1967 Henderson relocated to Hollywood at the suggestion of his friend Bill Cosby and for the past 40 years has pursued a successful acting career in film and television. His credits include series such as "Happy Days," "Sanford and Son," "The Jeffersons," "Good Times," "Hill Street Blues," and "NYPD Blue" as well as films like Trouble Man, Silver Streak, Fletch, City Slickers, White Men Can't Jump, Lethal Weapon 4, and The Alibi.

He never stopped singing, though his recordings and club appearances became less frequent. In recent years, however, Henderson was less than pleased with some of the roles he was being offered. "When you get older," he says, "directors think of you as being like a grandfather, and they always want you to be angry. When the roles started getting funny, I said I'd better go back to singing again. That's the thing that I really started out to do."

Between 1979 and 2006, Henderson recorded albums for Discovery (two of which received Grammy nominations), Classic, Naim, and Web Only Jazz. In 1999, he split vocal duties with Shirley Horn on Charlie Haden's Verve CD "The Art of the Song." He's appeared at the Kennedy Center in Washington, and in New York at the Algonquin's Oak Room and at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Hall. Henderson was also featured on the 1990 LaserDisc "Nancy Wilson Presents Great Jazz Night - Red Hot & Cool II", on which he sang three tunes filmed at the Baltimore Hotel in LA. Among them, a lovely take on Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer's "Moment To Moment".

Influenced early on by his peers, the late Joe Williams and Dick Haymes, Bill Henderson quickly emerged as an original voice and distinctive musical personality. In an early 1990s review of a Los Angeles club performance, the late critic Leonard Feather characterized Henderson as "one of the few totally qualified male jazz singers still extant" -- and that remains an apt description today.

Jazz at Lincoln Center continues its new free Listening Party series with critically acclaimed jazz artist Maria Schneider as she discusses her latest album, GRAMMY® Award-winning, "Sky Blue" with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Ken Druker. On March 12, Schneider will also be discussing and playing examples from her new unreleased work that was commissioned by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra for soprano Dawn Upshaw. The Saltman Knowles Quintet is a shining example of the tradition in jazz for long-term artist collaborations. This Washington DC group is known for serving up melodically alluring while rhythmically infectious music with a sincere and emotional collection of songs. Bassist Mark Saltman and pianist William Knowles, the leaders of this seamless blending of sounds,met while attending the composition program at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and created a musical bond with similar affections for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Horace Silver, Cedar Walton and Charles Mingus.

The new release, "Return of the Composer" exemplifies the cohesive unit created with a strong underlying foundation, interesting melodic lines, spirited rhythms and superlative musicianship. With four CDs under their belt the group decided to continue their journey into creative musical explorations by including the soulful sounds of vocalist Lori Williams-Chisholm in a more unconventional way. The use of the voice as an instrumental texture executing complex melodies while avoiding the cliché of standard vocal presentations is the icing on the cake of this delicious voyage of musical expression. The compelling clarity of Lori's vocals add to the rich spirit of this CD that includes drummer Jimmy "Junebug" Jackson, alto sax player Rob Landham and trumpeter Alvin Trask who provide a lush array of musical brilliance to this solid mix.
According to Saltman Knowles: "What makes this record different sound-wise is the use of vocalese (using the voice as another instrument). We're lucky in the sense that we can have both an instrumental sound like a straight swinging quintet as well as a vocal sound. The music we write is melodic, harmonically dense, and swinging. Often our music is a sketch of personal situations in our lives or of those friends who are close to us. Music is our way of commenting about life."

Although bassist Mark Saltman has not been diagnosed with synaesthetic experiences, his compositions are written using color theory, sense perception and intuition. "I came up with my system based on how I hear tonalities," Mark offered in a recent interview, "for example the brightest tonalities match the brightest colors just like on the color wheel. The difference between others and mine is that I equate 'c' (the key with no sharps and flats) to yellow, the brightest color, and 'Gb or F#' (the key with the most sharps and flats) to the darkest color or dark purple. This also corresponds with black and white keys on the piano."

On "Return Of The Composer" Mark uses this color sensory system in writing his original songs in collaboration with pianist William Knowles. The idea of composers looking at sounds in terms of colors is not new and in fact many past musicians have alluded to this concept including; Duke Ellington, Franz Liszt and Oliver Messiaen. According to medical studies these uncommon sensory experiences are examples of synesthesia, when two or more senses cooperate in perception. Once dismissed as imagination or delusion, metaphor or drug-induced hallucination, the experience of synesthesia has now been documented by scans of synesthetes' brains that show "crosstalk" between areas of the brain that do not normally communicate. However, not everyone agrees on what colors correspond to what pitches which leaves the research open for debate.

Mark Saltman says his songs are "related to traditional color theory" and he uses the same relationships on the color wheel when composing. "I also believe that my own color/music theory can be related to Eastern Philosophy where it is believed that certain colors are associated with channels and lines that exist around all of us." An example of how Mark uses this method can best be heard in his compositions from "Return Of The Composer", "Homeland" and "Shalom and Salaam."

In a recent interview, Quincy Jones hoped for the new US government to establish a Secretary of Culture, as Jacqueline Trescott reports (Washington Post). Jones' idea was taken up by others who started an online petition which so far has been signed by 76,000 people. The responsibilities for such a post would be the coordination of arts education, cultural diplomacy and support for arts organizations

The 16-piece band has performed regularly at the Bahai Center in NYC as part of the wonderful Tuesday night jazz series in the Dizzy Gillespie auditorium produced by jazz great Mike Longo, and has backed Tony Award Winner Debbie Gravitte in a show/concert created by Russ and Debbie called "BIG BAND BROADWAY" at the Ridgefield Playhouse in Ct., and at BIRDLAND in NYC, has been the featured performer at the 2nd annual Milford, PA Music Festival under the coordination of Martha Lorin, and has been heard on the 1010 WINS Radio Jingle promoting LIVE MUSIC in the NY Metropolitan area sponsored by LOCAL 802 AFM, NY's musicians union!

Kassoff was a recent guest (May '07) on NPR with Marion McPartland's Piano Jazz celebrating his critically acclaimed solo/trio CD, "Somewhere."

Vocalist Catherine Dupuis has been the featured vocalist with the RKBB since its inception. Her style is soulful, innovative, and fresh and she is a consummate artist. With the RKBB she performs a repertoire of original RK arrangements that she and Russ have worked on as musical partners for several years. Dupuis' three CDs recorded for Bearheart Records have received rave reviews. About "Rules of the Road" (2005, arranged and conducted by Russ Kassoff, featuring the Russ Kassoff Trio, Bucky Pizzarelli, Ted Nash, Marvin Stamm and Joe Cohn), Scott Yanow (All Music Guide) writes: "Although not overly famous, Catherine Dupuis shows on this CD that she is one of the most interesting jazz singers of the early 21st century. This year the NYC Winter Jazzfest moves from Tribeca to the West Village, taking over three venues, (Le) Poisson Rouge, Sullivan Hall and Kenny's Castaways from 6pm - 4am. This marks the fifth year of the annual Winter JazzFest, and its continued mission to showcase top quality jazz and experimental music.

The 2009 NYC WINTER JAZZFEST will feature over 20 different jazz groups during the Arts Presenters (APAP) conference. Similar to past years the festival will provide an opportunity for artists to showcase in front of presenters, promoters, talent buyers, educators, musicians and avid fans. Over 5000 arts professionals will be in New York City for the annual Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) conference from January 9-13. As there will be hundreds of showcases scheduled throughout the weekend around the city both at the Hilton Hotel and in alternative venues, Winter Jazzfest offers APAP conference attendees, and the general public, the opportunity to experience the best of today's new live jazz and experimental music in club venue settings. Once famed as the focal point of New York City's rich jazz and live music scene, Bleecker Street and the Village provide for an ideal festival experience with jazz and experimental music groups performing all night at three of the neighborhood's esteemed venues within close proximity of eachother. On this night the 2009 NYC Winter Jazzfest hopes to redeem the rich jazz heritage of the Village and bring jazz fans back to Bleecker Street. The 2009 NYC Jazzfest includes over 20 of today’s most interesting jazz groups from New York, Brooklyn, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Baltimore,Tulsa, Jerusalem, Chile, and Cuba.

Jeff "Tain" Watts presents a pre-release concert featuring Terence Blanchard, Christian McBride and Prometheus Jenkins at midnight on January 10th at Le Poisson Rouge

The Watts Project will be performing all new music from the CD "WATTS", a Socio-Political Concept Album, with tenor saxophonist Branford Marsalis, trumpeter Terence Blanchard and bassist Christian McBride. "WATTS" - the dynamic follow-up to Tain's 2007 release, "Folk's Songs" on his own Dark Key Music label - is an excellent twenty-first century example of percussion and politics, swing and sarcasm, and improvisation and irony. The title of the CD refers to the leader's last name, and it also corresponds with the CD cover shot of the famous Watts Towers, which is the symbol of the notorious mid-sixties Los Angeles race riots, and the hometown of the mercurial bassist/composer Charles Mingus. Blessed with complexity, power and imagination, Pittsburgh-born, Brooklyn-based drummer/composer/bandleader Jeff "Tain" Watts burst onto the scene in the eighties with Wynton and Branford Marsalis. He has since distinguished himself as the most influential and innovative drummer of his generation, as a valued sideman and recording artist, with four recordings as a leader. "WATTS" is released worldwide February 3rd 2009.

"Night Whispers", part three of my dear friend Marc Copland's much acclaimed "New York Trio Recordings," is a highlight of the subtle art of the post-Bill Evans piano trio: three sophisticated virtuosos (Copland on piano, Drew Gress on bass and the better each day Bill Stewart on drums) join on an exquisite flight of sizzlingly joyful musical discourse. To follow this highly-refined three-way conversation is an experience that can take your breath away and eventually purify your soul through 59 minutes of extreme beauty.
Recorded (June 8 & 9, 2008 at Bennett Studios, New Jersey) and mixed by Pirouet's head, saxophonist Jason Seizer, this new CD sublime CD includes three Copland's originals ("The Bell Tolls," "Scattered Leaves" and the title track "Night Whispers"), one by Gress ("Like it Never Was") and another one by Stewart ("Space Acres"), an intriguing version of Miles Davis' classic "So What" (that Copland brings into his own world, giving plenty of room to solos by Gress and Stewart), and ends with the famous Jule Styne/Sammy Cahn standard ballad "I Fall in Love Too Easily." The album centerpiece, Johnny Mandel's "Emily" (a Bill Evans favorite) is heard on three different short solo takes - the longer takes 2m12s. Take 2 is specially sumptuous, an impromptu that makes us dream of how Schumann could play jazz ballads.

III", co-written by Hugo & Neil Weiss.

From the liner notes by producer Neil Weiss: "As a musician, John Francis Pastorius III (Jaco) brought change. He boldly took his instrument, the electric bass, to uncharted waters, and an instrument that is commonly placed behind the music, to the front. As a musician, Jaco's talent was not confined to the bass, more than a musician, Jaco was music. The focus of this project, Gospel For J.F.P. III, is on Jaco, the composer, a man with an extraordinary ability to create music. The body of material that he himself composed is not enormous, further proof that less is more, as these compositions rightfully fall into the status of contemporary standards, and sure to pass the test of time. Involved here are many of the musicians that were part of his life, as well as others his music has touched. Needless to say, Jaco's own renditions of his wonderful compositions could never be surpassed, only interpreted, and serve as an inspiration to all those who love his music."

Barbara Dennerlein at the "Jazzland" in Vienna

Barbara played her final concert for 2008 at the "Jazzland" where the organist usually plays for a whole week every year. Even Axel Melhart who runs this jazz club now in its 36th year can not remember when Barbara's heavy Hammond B3 has been moved down the cellar staircase for the first time. But it's proven that she played there on January 18th, 1989, with the "Dennerlein-Antolini-Klein" trio because this concert had been recorded by Austrian television for broadcast and for the record "Live on Tour".

This was exactly 20 years ago. One may not believe that so much time has gone by since then. The "Jazzland" looks almost the same if not better, and Barbara too, states Axel. A fine photo series from the concert on December 13th, 2008 has been put on the web by photographer Andreas Müller:

A phone call with Annual reflections

Annual reflections are a phenomenon of the "time between the years". Barbara Dennerlein's many concert tours gave rise to a telephone interview that Alan Bryson did recently and released it as a podcast on the web. The 35 minutes interview is mostly in English. Concerts in January

Like in 2008, Barbara Dennerlein will give her first concert of the year in Switzerland, and again she will be accompanied by drummer Pius Baschnagel. On January 10th the duo plays at the "Bären" in Häggenschwil close to St. Gallen. Then two solo Hammond B3 concerts are scheduled in the Munich region. Barbara Dennerlein will be on stage in Fürstenfeldbruck on January 15th and at the "Habach Village" close to Murnau on January 23rd. Finally, Barbara will play at the Paulus Church in Fockbek. Two years ago she let the newly built-in organ swing during the consecration concert for the instrument. To be exact - her expressive play was a real organ check... Unfortunately, the church was too small for all the music fans, so that some people had to stay outside. Now there is a new chance on January 31st to hear Barbara Dennerlein on the Wöhl organ.

Music Sales Fell in 2008, but Climbed on the Web

Sales of recorded music fell sharply in 2008, as consumers continued to migrate away from the CD format and the recession dampened consumer spending during the critical year-end holiday shopping period.

The year’s biggest seller was Lil Wayne’s album “Tha Carter III” (Cash Money/Universal Motown), which sold 2.87 million copies, followed by Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” (Capitol), with 2.14 million. “Fearless” (Big Machine), the second album by the 19-year-old country star Taylor Swift, was third, with 2.11 million. (Ms. Swift also scored the sixth-highest seller this year, for her self-titled debut, released in 2006, which sold 1.6 million copies in 2008.)

The music industry has grown accustomed to dismal sales numbers, and this year even the good news comes with disappointment. “Tha Carter III” is the first release in SoundScan’s 17-year history to top the year-end list with sales of less than 3 million.

Sales of digital music continued to rise steeply last year. Just over a billion songs were downloaded, a 27 percent increase from 2007, and some record companies say they are finally beginning to wring significant profits from music on Web sites like YouTube and MySpace.

But analysts say that despite the growth and promise of digital music — in 2003 just 19 million songs were purchased as downloads — the money made online is still far from enough to make up for losses in physical sales.

“As the digital side grows, you get a different business model, with more revenue streams,” said Michael McGuire, an analyst with Gartner, a market research firm. “But do we get back to where the revenue that the labels see is going to be fully replacing the CD in the next four to five years? No.” Gartner recently issued a report urging record companies to put their primary focus on downloads.

Record companies counter that album sales alone do not give a full picture of the complex new economics of the industry. Rio Caraeff, the executive vice president of Universal Music Group’s digital division, eLabs, said other income, like the fees collected when users stream a video online, had become an essential part of the pie. Twenty percent of Rihanna’s revenue, he said, has come from the sale of ring tones.

“We don’t focus anymore on total album sales or the sale of any one particular product as the metric of revenue or success,” Mr. Caraeff said. “We look at the total consolidated revenue from dozens of revenue lines behind a given artist or project, which include digital sales, the physical business, mobile sales and licensing income.”

Even as most of the industry pushes for greater online sales, two of the biggest albums of the year were by artists who have been vocal opponents of downloading. Kid Rock’s “Rock N Roll Jesus” (Atlantic) reached No. 4 with just over 2 million sales, and AC/DC’s “Black Ice” (Columbia), sold through an exclusive deal with Wal-Mart, was No. 5 with 1.92 million.

Neither act sells its music through Apple’s iTunes, the dominant online seller. AC/DC has said that selling individual tracks breaks up the continuity of a full album. But à la carte downloads are also far less lucrative than full CDs.

At least one sector of the music industry has continued to enjoy robust success: the concert business. Ticket sales in North America in 2008 rose at least 7 percent, to $4.2 billion, according to Pollstar, the touring-industry trade magazine. But in keeping with the trend of recent years, slightly fewer tickets were sold for more money: attendance for the top 100 tours dropped 3 percent, but the average ticket price climbed 8 percent, to $66.90.

The record industry has been eager to share in touring’s bull market, and many of the major labels’ new contracts are for so-called 360 deals, which give the company a much wider share in an artist’s income, from touring to merchandising to product endorsements. But those types of contract are still far from the norm.

Despite the growth of online music sales, CDs remain by far the most popular format, although that hold is slipping; 361 million CDs were sold in 2008, down almost 20 percent from the previous year. About 84 percent of all album purchases were CDs, down from 90 percent the year before.

And since CDs remain the record industry’s biggest profit engine, many analysts worry that the industry will be particularly vulnerable to inventory reductions at retail stores. Big-box stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy account for up to 65 percent of all retail purchases, and many of those stores are sharply reducing the floor space allotted to music, said Richard Greenfield, a media analyst at Pali Research in New York.

“CDs no longer drive somebody into a store on Tuesday,” Mr. Greenfield said, referring to the day new CDs usually go on sale. “So the big risk for 2009 is that you will see even more rapid contraction of floor space, as CDs really go out of sight, out of mind for the consumer.”

This CD, released in 2008, brings together 50 years of live appearances from Dave Brubeck and his groups at the Monterey Jazz Festival. If the mere fact that Brubeck has been playing Monterey from 1958 straight through to 2007 wasn't impressive enough, the consistency of his dazzling musicianship should do the trick. Naturally, Brubeck plays with a variety of musicians over the years, but each of his ensembles glow with the precision, swing, and that particular mix of classical and improvisatory elements for which the artist is known.

Whether on standards ("Someday My Prince Will Come"), post-bop work-outs ("Jumping Bean"), striking originals ("Tritonis," "Two Part Contention," and "Sermon on the Mount") or signature tunes ("Take Five"), Brubeck comes on strong, impressing with his range, vitality, and endurance. All tracks previously unreleased, except "Sleep" (2006) and "Someday My Prince Will Come" (1962).

Em época de comemoração dos 50 anos do surgimento da bossa nova, nada melhor do que comprovar a longevidade da talentosa casta de bateristas brasileiros que deram ritmo àquela música.

O requinte deste trabalho fica evidente na concepção samba-jazz, intercalada entre condução no hi-hat e ride, de Milton Banana em "Só Danço Samba", gravada por Stan Getz e João Gilberto em 1963. Em "Você", Edison Machado dá a receita da suavidade com a aplicação de vassourinhas. "Oba, La, La" e "Bim Bom" são entoadas por Dom Um Romão. Paulo Braga traz seu groove balançado na clássica "Só Tinha de Ser com Você", na voz de Elis Regina.

As faixas reúnem ainda Rubens Ohana, do Tamba Trio, Claudio Slon, Wilson das Neves, Aladim, Juquinha e Roberto Pontes Dias, que tocou no lendário show do Carnegie Hall, em 1962, ano em que a bossa nova ganhou o mundo.
