Diana Krall Wards Off Cold, Wind, Insects at Wente Vineyards

It was a high of 88 F on Thursday in Livermore, and a low of, well, seemingly much lower.
The cold and windy evening, while great for growing grapes, wasn’t ideal for the sold-out crowd that turned out to see Diana Krall at Wente Vineyards. The jazz vocalist-pianist, who also performs Tuesday and Wednesday at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, certainly sympathized with those trying to stay warm.

“I should have gotten some Diana Krall cashmere blankets made up for you,” remarked Krall, the wife of rock star Elvis Costello.

In lieu of that souvenir item, the Grammy Award-winning star did her best to heat up the night with 80 minutes’ worth of sensational straight-ahead jazz, Latin-tinged numbers and bluesy ballads.

The 44-year-old Canadian and her topnotch band _ guitarist Anthony Wilson, drummer Jeff Hamilton and bassist Robert Hurst, in place of regular cohort John Clayton _ opened the show with a snappy take on the standard “I Love Being Here With You” and then moved straight into a lively run through Harold Arlen’s “Let’s Fall in Love.”

Those two numbers underscored Krall’s ability to sing what purists might call “real jazz.” She used her voice like an instrument, one that remained true to the beat, and her approach was equal parts Ella and Kurt Elling.

From there, she proceeded to showcase her versatility. The third number was the ‘60s Brazilian bossa nova number “So Nice,” also known by the title “Summer Samba,” which can be found on Krall’s latest album, “Quiet Nights.” The rendition was slinky and sultry, boasting enough vocal warmth to thaw a thousand fans. The slow burn continued through the next offering, “You Call It Madness (But I Call It Love),” a chestnut that has been handled by such greats as Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra.

She would turn to “Quiet Nights” CD _ which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 back in April _ for a few more treasures, including a comforting version of the title track and a nicely improvised take on the wedding-reception classic “”The Girl from Ipanema.” These two numbers, both penned by Antonio Carlos Jobim, further underscored that Krall now stands as one of the finest interpreters of the Jobim songbook.

Her band mates were superb throughout the evening, with Wilson, as per usual, earning the most vocal response from the crowd. Wilson wasn’t, however, the player that fans should’ve been happiest about seeing onstage.

“It’s lovely to have Jeff Hamilton here tonight,” said Krall, singling the drummer out from the group. “I could elaborate, but _ maybe some of you were here the last time we played here.”

Krall didn’t elaborate, so I will: The vocalist was referencing her 2007 Wente date, which Hamilton had to bow out of due to illness. Instead of explaining the situation to the crowd, Krall simply carried on in a trio setting _ minus a drummer _ and that resulted in one strange, and disappointing, night of music.

Wente, it seems, is turning out to be a weird venue for Krall. On top of the chilly weather on Thursday, there was also what will likely be forever remembered as “the bug incident.” It happened during the opening piano solo to “Come Dance With Me,” when some little critter crawled up on the ebony and ivory.

“Ewww,” shrieked Krall, her pretty solo coming to an abrupt stop. “I just killed a bug. Oh, I don’t feel good about this.”

As it turned out, the bug would live. And the show would go on _ and finish up quite nicely. Yet, one can’t help but wonder what’s in store for Krall, and her fans, during her next visit to Wente.
