Kurt Elling: "Live in Montreal" (EmArcy/Universal) 2009
Highlights: a superb vocalese on "A New Body and Soul" (based on Dexter Gordon's monumental solo), and great versions of "My Foolish Heart" and "Nightmoves." Also includes a duet with special guest Richard Bona (playing acoustic guitar) on Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Luiza," plus another Jobim song, "If You Never Come To Me" ("Inutil Paisagem") on a medley with Irving Berlin's sublime "Change Partners."
Filmed on July 4, 2007, at the Montreal Jazz Festival, documents Elling in top form, assisted by Lawrence Hobgood (piano), Rob Amster (bass), Willie Jones III (drums), Howard Levy (harmonica), Bob Sheppard (sax), Guilherme Monteiro & Randy Bachman (guitars).
The "extras" bring rehearsal scenes and an interview with my dear friend Mark Murphy, Elling's main influence.
