R.I.P: Earl Turbinton

The saxophonist Earl Turbinton died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after a long illness at the age of 65. Turbinton studied jazz with Alvin Batiste and founded the Jazz Workshop in the late 60s hoping to serve as an incubator for a new jazz avantgarde in his hometown of New Orleans. In the 70s he often played with the band Astral Project; he also taught - among his students are the saxophonist Wessell Anderson and the singer Cassandra Wilson. He participated in recordings by Joe Zawinul and B.B. King, and he worked up to 2002 when he suffered a stroke. After Hurricane Katrina he was evacuated to Memphis, Tennessee, and since November of last year lived in a nursing home in Baton Rouge. Obituary: New Orleans Times-Picayune .
