Page Cavanaugh dies at 86; pianist-singer led Southland jazz trio

Page Cavanaugh, a veteran pianist-singer whose trio was a popular nightclub and recording group in the late 1940s and '50s and who became one of Southern California's most enduring lounge jazz artists, has died. He was 86. Cavanaugh, who also was a composer and arranger during his more than 60-year career, died Friday morning of kidney failure at a skilled nursing facility in Granada Hills, said Phil Mallory, Cavanaugh's bass player for 18 years.

During the early days with his trio, Cavanaugh appeared with Frank Sinatra at the Waldorf-Astoria and elsewhere, played for NBC Radio's "The Jack Paar Show" and appeared in movies such as "A Song Is Born," "Romance on the High Seas," "Big City" and "Lullaby of Broadway."

"He was always a creatively fascinating artist throughout his long career," music critic Don Heckman told The Times. "What he did with his most famous group in the '40s and '50s was to develop a new style, in which all three members of the group would sing in unison in a whisper fashion."

It was a time, Heckman said, "when jazz and popular music were in much closer sync than they are today, so that groups like Nat Cole and George Shearing and Page Cavanaugh could play with a distinctly jazz flavor and still reach large audiences and sell a lot of records."


The Page Cavanaugh Trio, which placed in Top 10 polls in Down Beat and Metronome magazines from 1946 to the early '50s, had chart hits such as "The Three Bears" and "She Had to Go and Lose It At the Astor." Cavanaugh, whose trio also performed at clubs such as Ciro's and the Trocadero in the '40s, had his share of long-run gigs, including regular stints at the Captain's Table on La Cienega Boulevard in the early '50s and at the Money Tree in Toluca Lake in the '80s and '90s.

In the early '60s, he formed a seven-piece group, The Page 7, that recorded for RCA and appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and other TV programs. Around the same time, he opened his own club in Studio City.

But Cavanaugh, who performed solo in Las Vegas for a number of years in the '80s, had his share of career ups and downs. "At the end of the '50s, when rock 'n' roll came in, prices went down, and you couldn't get arrested," he said in a 1992 interview with The Times. "I'd end up playing in bowling alleys. It was a bad time."

Still, he said, "a life in music was a good choice for me. It's been a damn roller coaster, flying high one day, poor as Job's turkey the next. But I can't think of anything I'd trade it for."

Walter Page Cavanaugh was born Jan. 26, 1922, in Cherokee, Kan., and grew up on his family's farm. Both of his parents played ragtime piano, and he switched from his first instrument -- ukulele -- to piano when he was about 9. He later won high school solo piano competitions four years in a row and earned a scholarship to Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kan. But he stayed less than a semester and joined a Kansas-based band.

At age 20, he moved to Los Angeles and joined the Bobby Sherwood band, with whom he toured until he was drafted during World War II. While serving in the Army Signal Corps, he joined the Three Sergeants, a trio with Al Viola on guitar and Lloyd Pratt on bass, which played for officers' club dances and other functions. After the war, they became known as the Page Cavanaugh Trio.

The latest edition of the Page Cavanaugh Trio -- featuring Mallory on bass and Jason Lingle on drums -- released its last CD, "Return to Elegance," in 2006. Cavanaugh made his final appearance with his trio in June 2007 at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach, where the band had played on Thursday nights for more than a decade. "He loved to entertain," Mallory said.

Cavanaugh, who never married, had no immediate surviving family members. There will be no services.

New York State Budget – Severe Cuts for Funding Music – A Call to Action:

Background: New York State has a significant budget deficit and as a consequence Governor Patterson has proposed various cuts and new taxes. A number of these directly concern our membership including (a) cutbacks in funding for the arts; and (b) cutbacks in school funding that will directly hit the already vulnerable music budgets. Needless to say these measures will reduce opportunities to play, hear, record, and be educated about music. They also will have an economic negative impact on membership.

What We Encourage You To Do: Please contact your congressional leaders by email, phone, or in person to encourage them to oppose the proposed budget cuts. Below provides information from the Alliance of New York State Arts Organizations that may be helpful.

The Governor's proposed cut for the arts in the current 2008-09 budget stands at
$7 million.
And the total cut to the 2009-10 arts budget is almost $10 million from the start of the 2008-09 fiscal year.

CURRENT ARTS BUDGET 2008 - 09

The Governor's proposal remains unchanged. He proposes eliminating the NYSCA funds that have not yet been awarded from the OCTOBER and DECEMBER cycles totaling $7 million. This means that almost all of the almost 600 organizations in those two cycles will not receive any funding.....including those who have general operating support pending. The inequities are staggering!

This proposed reduction is the second one in this current budget (don't forget there was almost approximately a 10% reduction a couple of months ago). It will bring the NYSCA budget down to $38.9 million from $48.5 million at the start of the current fiscal year.

2009 - 10 ARTS BUDGET

The Governor's budget proposes a "$7 million dollar" cut to NYSCA in 2009-10, or $38.9 million for local assistance/grants to the field. HOWEVER, this is actually almost a $10 million cut or approximately a 20% reduction from the beginning of the current fiscal year when the budget was $48.5 million. This means that there will not be an additional cut to NYSCA if the Governor's second proposed cut is approved by the Legislature.

NYSCA Operations budget is almost $5.5 million....down from $6.1 million at the beginning of the current fiscal year and down from $5.7 million after the mid-year cuts.

OTHER ARTS CHANGES IN THE 2009 - 10 BUDGET

The Governor proposes merging the New York State Theatre Institute with the Empire State Plaza Performing Arts Center ("The Egg"). Under the Executive Budget, the New York State Theatre Institute becomes a subsidiary of "The Egg", the Theatre Institute will continue to provide artistic and educational programming for children and families from its current facilities in Troy under the merger. State support for the new organization will be $3.65 million.

ACTION STEPS

We must all take responsibility and act. In this economy no one can afford to sit on the sidelines. So here is what we all need to do:

1. NOW>>>>>>Make appointments to meet your legislators at home...in their district offices before the first week in January. These face to face meetings really matter. Tell your story; dramatize the impact of these cuts in your district. These meetings must take place before the first week in January when the legislative session will begin. We assume the first agenda item will be the Governor's proposed cuts to the current budget.

2. NYS ARTS will mobilize an EMAIL CAMPAIGN before the Legislative Session begins to deal with the current budget reductions. When you receive the email, send it to everyone you know.

3. Come to Albany the first week in January. The arts community must be there when the session convenes to deal with the Governor's proposed cuts to the current budget. We will confirm dates for you.

4. Mark ARTS DAY February 3 on your calendar. Come to Albany. Meet with legislators. Attend the ARTS DAY Reception at the New York State Museum from 5 - 7 pm. A huge turnout will be very important.

5. Watch for NYS ARTS Advocacy Webinars in January. Gather the tips and tools you need to meet with legislators and understand the complexities of the budget issues.

6. The Regional Captain Network, your local advocacy leaders, will be meeting in December to plan and strategize in response to the budget proposals.

The Quintet of the Americas is one of the Western Hemispheres finest chamber ensembles. The Quintet is in residence in The Department of Music and Performing Arts in The Steinhardt School at New York University. Since its founding in Colombia in 1976, Quintet of the Americas has delighted in performing music of South America. Following its successful recording "Dancing in Colombia," the ensemble is proud to be releasing this CD of music with Brazilian roots.

The idea for this disc originated with the Quintet s arrangements of music by Ernesto Nazareth and Pixinguinha. More music from Brazil was added to the Quintet s collection when their long-time friend and inspiration, Brazilian multi-instrumentalist & composer Thiago de Mello, began performing with the Quintet in arrangements of his brilliant songs by Daniel Wolff. Further collaborations with Brazilian pianist and composer Marcelo Zarvos led to the commissioning of "Changes." Rounding out the album is another commissioned work, "Ventos," by the gifted young São Paulo-born (and NY-based) composer, Ricardo Romaneiro.

Quintet of the Americas was founded in 1976 in Bogotá, Colombia, by five players from the United States who were the principal wind players of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional. Two-time recipients of the ASCAP/Chamber Music America Adventuresome Programming Awards, the Quintet s programs have included repertoire as varied as commissioned pieces involving electronic music, Sephardic music, Native American music, music from the African Diaspora and music influenced by jazz, as well as music involving the Quintet s collection of folk instruments including drums, flutes, rattles, conch horns, etc., and music with theatrical elements such as lighting, masks, and choreography. The Quintet has toured extensively in the United States, and in Canada, Venezuela, Colombia, the Caribbean, Ukraine and the Republic of Georgia.

The Quintet is currently in residence in the Department of Music and Performing Arts in the Steinhardt School at New York University. The group's extensive residency experience has included the Chamber Music America Residency Program in Chicago involving Northwestern University, the Chicago Youth Symphony and the People's Music School; Austin Peay State University (Tennessee); and several years at Hunter College (New York) and New York's Americas Society. The group has performed outreach programs for Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concerts, Lincoln Center, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, 92nd Street Y, Midori and Friends, Fondacion Batuta in Colombia, Queens Symphony, and Young Audiences. In 2002, the Quintet gave master classes and concerts for the Special Secondary Music School in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and at the National Conservatoire in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia. The Quintet presents a yearly one-week intensive Institute for Woodwind Quintets and Wind Chamber Music at New York University for high school and college students. The Quintet presented a Carnegie Hall debut recital in 1992 featuring three commissions for Quintet with orchestra.

Other important concerts have included the Carnegie Hall American Music Week Series at Weill Recital Hall, the Bermuda International Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, the Inter-American Festival in Puerto Rico, the Bar Harbor Festival, the Chautauqua Festival, the Pan American Music Festivals at the Library of Congress and the O.A.S. in Washington, the Festival Internacional de Música Contemporanea in Bogotá, Colombia (1993), the First International Congress on Women in Music and two Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors Festivals.

One of the original New York “young lions,” pianist Peter Delano, makes a welcome, much-anticipated return to his New York stomping grounds with a special appearance at the APAP Convention on Saturday, January 10th, 2008 at 4:20pm in the Harlem Suite of the Hilton Hotel, in celebration of the 1996 recording with Dewey Redman, just released on Sunnyside Records, "For Dewey." The first time I watched him was in 1994, on the LaserDisc "Carnegie Hall Salutes The Jazz Masters - Verve 50th Anniversary", later reissued on DVD in 2002, but only in Asia.

New York pianist Peter Delano thrived in the nineties….a leader of the pack, a photogenic child prodigy, an impossible teenage amalgam of McCoy Tyner’s chordal power, Bud Powell’s linear luminosity, and Keith Jarrett’s pianistic poetry. A student of Red Rodney’s pianist Gary Dial, Delano performed and recorded with the likes of Michael Brecker, Gary Bartz, and Lewis Nash, and burst on the scene with his self-titled 1993 Verve debut, at the age of seventeen, followed by his 1994 Polygram release "Bite of the Apple." He enrolled at Columbia University, but tragically, suffered a debilitating back injury that forced him to stop playing, until he resumed his career in 2007.

"For Dewey" - recorded in 1996 and released on Sunnyside for the first time ever – is a posthumous tribute to the late great tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, with Danish drummer Anders Hentze and bassist Doug Weiss. As Ira Gitler wrote in his liner notes, “Peter continued to fulfill his great promise with his ‘94 release, "Bite of the Apple." What is now "For Dewey" was to be his third CD. It didn’t make it to the public because Peter began to matriculate at Columbia University. He wasn’t available to tour ‘in support’ (as they say) of his recordings and labels want their artists to be visible. For Dewey was yet another forward step. The originals reflect a still-growing Peter, as do his interpretations of the three standards. Redman is a presence on three of the five originals and there is magic in the interaction of the two principals.”

"For Dewey" represents for Peter Delano not only a return to the world of recorded music; it also marks the re-emergence of a shining star in a galaxy of jazz talents.

Jazz singer and pianist Nina Simone was such a prodigious talent that even a four-disc box set might seem too small a canvas to fully sketch her genius, but "To Be Free: The Nina Simone Story" is nonetheless an ideal introduction. The three CDs contain 51 tracks covering Simone's career from 1953 to 1993, from her beginnings as a classically trained supper club artiste through her period of political awakening into her later, idiosyncratic blend of jazz, blues, pop, and rock. Including tracks from her periods at the Bethlehem, Colpix, Philips, RCA, PM, CTI (which released the controversial "Baltimore" LP, my favorite Nina album ever) and Elektra labels. The fourth disc is a DVD containing a documentary film with live concert footage that was completed in 1970 but never released until this set. The set also contains eight previously unreleased songs and a book with essays and track-by-track commentary. Includes 24 live tracks and 8 previously unreleased songs, plus the first ever Nina Simone DVD featuring a stunning documentary and 9 additional performances

Truly one of of the greatest African-American female vocalists of the 20th century Nina Simone (1933-2003) holds a special position of honor for the fearless role she played as an uncompromising ambas­sador of cultural pride at the height of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements from the late 1950s to the 1970s.

The musical roots and branches of Nina Simone’s life are explored in depth. Includes an alternative of the classic track, Ain’t Got No-I Got Life, which continues to be featured in Müller’s advertising campaign.

Aside form the 3 discs & dvd, it comes complete with previously unseen photography from Simone‘s family archives, photos from the personal collection of Nina Simone historian Sylvia Hampton as well as meticulously researched track-by-track annotations written by David Nathan.

The Monterey Jazz Festival, a leader in jazz education and presentation since 1958, is proud to announce that the 2008 JazzTimes Readers’ Poll has named the Monterey Jazz Festival as the top jazz festival in the world for the third consecutive year.

The JazzTimes Readers' Poll win reflects MJF’s commitment to presenting the best cross section of creative artists in the jazz world, showcasing the genre's most promising emerging talents, and presenting the country’s top student jazz bands. Highlights of the 51st Festival, held September 19 - 21, 2008, included stellar debuts from Cassandra Wilson, the Derek Trucks Band and Jamie Cullum, with highly anticipated returns of jazz legends and NEA Jazz Masters Nancy Wilson, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter.

MJF/51 Artist-In-Residence, bassist Christian McBride was in full form with a number of his ongoing electric and newly-minted acoustic endeavors, and the Monterey fans were treated to several special projects that were crowd-pleasers: Willow Lake from the Maria Schneider Orchestra (her second commissioned composition for the Festival); the polished Tribute to Cannonball Adderley with Tom Scott, Terence Blanchard and Nancy Wilson; the Kurt Elling Johnny Hartman/John Coltrane homage, Dedicated to You; and Cuban Lullabies from Maraca. In 2008, 43,000 people attended MJF/51.

The Festival is also proud to announce that NEA Jazz Master and longtime MJF veteran, saxophonist James Moody, and 2007 MJF Artist-In-Residence, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, have both been nominated for Grammy Awards in the “Best Jazz Instrumental Solo” category for their improvisations from the Dizzy Gillespie-penned classic song, “Be-Bop” off the Live at the 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival recording on Monterey Jazz Festival Records.

Collectively known as the “Monterey Jazz Festival 50th Anniversary All-Stars,” this stellar group of three generations of jazz masters included James Moody on saxophone; Terence Blanchard on trumpet; Benny Green on piano; Nnenna Freelon on vocals; Derrick Hodge on bass; and Kendrick Scott on drums. The band made two appearances at MJF/50 in 2007 and appeared in a nationwide, 52-date tour across twenty-two states in the first quarter of 2008, performing for over 43,000 fans. The Monterey Jazz Festival Records Grammy nomination will be Mr. Moody’s fourth; Mr. Blanchard has been nominated for eleven Grammys and has won the award three times.

Since the label was launched in 2007, the not-for profit Monterey Jazz Festival Records (an imprint of Concord Records) has released thirteen historic records, including never-before-released live sets from Art Blakey and the Giants of Jazz, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Shirley Horn (her "Live at the 1994 Monterey Jazz Festival" was recently named by the web magazine Slate as the #2 jazz album of 2008), Thelonious Monk, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Sarah Vaughan. The 50th Anniversary All-Stars’ Live at the 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival represents the label’s first non-archival recording, and is the first of the ongoing series to be nominated for Grammys. The Grammy winners will be announced on February 9, 2009 on CBS.

In a related development, the Festival is also proud to announce that the Carla Bley Big Band recording for the WATT/ECM label, "Appearing Nightly," has been nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album” category. The title track, “Appearing Nightly at the Black Orchid” was commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and made its premiere at MJF/48 on September 17, 2005 on the Jimmy Lyons Stage in the Arena. In addition, the web magazine Slate has named Appearing Nightly as the #5 jazz album of 2008.

The 52nd Monterey Jazz Festival will take place September 18 - 20, 2009 and will feature a roster of jazz legends and talented newcomers alike. For MJF/52, the Festival has named as Artists-In-Residence the New Orleans-born trumpeter and multiple Grammy Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize recipient, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The singer Frances Lynne sang with Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond in the late 1940s, then went on to sing with Charlie Barnet and Gene Krupa. In the 1950s she sang with the clarinetist Jerry Wald's orchestra whose saxophonist Al Cohn wrote vocal charts for her. Later she settled in San Francisco, sold cosmetics and from time to time sang in a local gay bar with a country & western band. Obituary: San Francisco Chronicle.

Nice originals (the sensual opening track, "Beautiful Hands," reveals the strong influence of Eliane Elias) and creative renditions of such tunes as "Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo," "Straight, No Chaser," "In The Still of The Night" and specially "I'm Beginning To See The Light" (done in a delightful afro-cuban groove) make this album by NY-based pianist/vocalist Deanna Witkowski a highly recommended item. She's supported throughout the session by Dave Ambrosio (bass), Vince Cherico (drums) & Donny McCaslin (sporano & tenor daxophones).

After three years performing Herbie Hancock's "Butterfly" in live concerts with Ithamara Koorax all over the world, Azymuth's keyboardist José Roberto Bertrami decided to suggest to London-based impresario Joe Davis (head of Far Out label) that the group should record it on their next album.
Now released both on CD and LP formats, with "Butterfly" used as title track, this turn out to be Azymuth's best album during their Far Out era. "Butterfly" is also the opening tune of the CD, but appears as the first track of Side B on the vinyl version.
To kick off Side A, Davis and producer David Brinkworth chose "Os Cara La", with a hypnotic funk groove propelled by Alex Malheiros' pumping bass and Ivan Conti's thundering drums, sounding reminiscent of their best work for Milestone in the early 80s.
The three musicians contribute with strong originals, with Bertrami's "Triagem" being the most efervescent one. Bertrami's keyboard arsenal includes Fender Rhodes, Hammond, Vocoder, Mini Moog. Alex doubles on acoustic guitar. Ivan is also heard on percussion.
Arthur Verocai wrote string scores for "New Dawn" and "Butterfly", besides adding electric guitar to the remake of "Morning" (Manhã), originally recorded in 1975 for the Som Livre LP which included "Linha do Horizonte."
Other guests: Robertinho Silva, Tiago Martins, José Carlos "Bigorna" Ramos (Zé Bigorna), Paulinho Guitarra and Alex Pilkington.

Quincy Jones & Dave Brubeck inducted into the California Hall of Fame

Tomorrow, December 15, my friends & idols Dave Brubeck (who just turned 88 on December 6), Quincy Jones, Jack Nicholson and Jane Fonda, among others, will be inducted into the California Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will be hosted by California Governor Arnold Scharzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver at the California Museum in Sacramento. Other 2008 inductees (whose achievements were described by "legendary" by the Governor) are Theodore Geisel (Dr. Suess), Robert Graham, Jack LaLanne, Dorthea Lange, Julia Morgan, Linus Pauling, Leland Stanford and Alice Waters.

Maria Shriver created the California Hall of Fame, which is sponsored this year by Chevron Corp. and Accenture.

There doesn't seem to be a big enough pie for Quincy Jones to get all his fingers in. Even the Earth itself falls short of his grasp.

"You know that tune I arranged for Count Basie and Sinatra, 'Fly Me to the Moon'?" Jones asks. "It went up to the moon with the astronauts in 1969, and Buzz Aldrin played it when they landed on the moon." Jones, 75, is speaking over the phone from his mansion in Bel Air.

Correct that: not just in Bel Air. "All the way at the top of Bel Air."

Yes, it can be revealed that Quincy Delightt Jones Jr. has an ego. That comes with the territory when you reach his level of accomplishment. The dude has so many citations - 27 Grammys (the most ever), scores of Oscar nominations and Golden Globes, dozens of awards for worldwide humanitarian efforts and a few handfuls of honorary university degrees - that he makes a joke about the one he's picking up Monday for his induction into the California Hall of Fame, an honor he's sharing with Jane Fonda, Jack LaLanne, Jack Nicholson, Dave Brubeck and several others.

"I'm going up to Sacramento to pick it up from Ahhhhnold," he says.

On Tuesday, Jones talks at Herbst Theatre for City Arts & Lectures, part of a tour he's on to promote his new book, "The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey & Passions." Unsurprising for a Jones project, the book is unique. It has to be one of the most lavishly produced volumes of photos and memorabilia ever published, containing high-quality reproductions of items like Jones' report card from Schillinger House of Music (which became the Berklee School of Music); pages from Jones' appointment calendar from 1955, when he was leading a big band (with handwritten notes like "call Hamp" and "call Bags" and "Dentist"); ledger pages indicating what he, as a producer, was paying musicians ($240 to Ray Charles in 1959 for recording "Deed I Do" and "Let the Good Times Roll"); and the original scribbled-on sheet music for the Jones-produced "We Are the World." You can actually remove these items from their special pockets in the book.

At Herbst, interviewer Ben Fong-Torres - who is reportedly writing a biography of Jones - will have his work cut out for him, because Jones' talking style is strictly stream of consciousness, and mile-a-minute at that. An anecdote about his boyhood in Chicago can lead to a story about Miles Davis, which can segue into Jones' ideas about artificial intelligence, leading him to talk about the French Huguenots and the ghettos of Brazil. And so on.

In that spirit, we will provide a few chronological signposts, then just let Jones rip.

-- Born in Chicago: "My daddy (Quincy Jones Sr.) was a carpenter who worked for gangsters. You can't believe what it was like in Chicago then. It was the biggest ghetto in America, and this was the Depression. All I ever saw was tommy guns, stogies, dead bodies in the streets. When I was 10 years old, I got my hand impaled on a fence. ... I'd probably be dead if we had stayed in Chicago."

-- The family moves to Bremerton, Wash., when Jones is 10. He starts playing piano, then trombone and finally trumpet. Two years later, the family moves to Seattle, and Jones starts doing professional gigs, including with Ray Charles.

"He was two years older than me, and I wanted to be him. He was so independent; he had his own apartment. He came from Florida. He hated Florida. ... He said, 'When I get $600, I want to get as far away from Florida as I can get.' That was Seattle."

-- At 17, Jones joins vibist Lionel Hampton's band, where he starts doing arrangements. This leads to arranging for many others, including Dizzy Gillespie, Big Maybelle and Dinah Washington. Jones releases his first album, "This Is How I Feel About Jazz," in 1957. He moves to France and produces and arranges many albums for Barclay Disques while studying composition with Nadia Boulanger.

"One day I get a call from Grace Kelly in Monaco. She says, Mr. Sinatra wants me to bring 55 musicians to Monaco for a fundraiser. So I put together a band. I get onstage, and he was like a magician. Only about six words passed between us. I didn't even know if I was on his radar screen.

"Four years later, he calls me from Kauai. Says 'Q' - nobody ever called me 'Q' - 'I just heard the record you did with Basie, "Fly Me to the Moon." I like it in 4/4 the way you did it. Would you consider doing that with me and Basie?'

"I said, 'You gotta be kidding. ...' Two days later I was in Kauai. I got to know him. He had a little bungalow with a big picture of Jack Daniel's on the wall. ... People think Frank is this tough guy, but if you know him, he's really sweet and giving. You know, Frank and Buddy Rich got their personalities from Tommy Dorsey. Dorsey was a salty Irish alcoholic, and Frank and Buddy imitated him. ...

"Frank used to say, 'Q, live every day like your last, and one day you'll be right.' "

-- In 1961, Jones goes to work in the artist and repertoire department of Mercury Records. In 1964, he's promoted to vice president, becoming the first African American to hold a position that high in the record industry. He produces several hits for Lesley Gore, including the No. 1 "It's My Party," and goes on to produce and arrange hit records for dozens of artists, ranging from Louis Armstrong to Charles to Aretha Franklin to Little Richard to Paul Simon.

-- Jones composes his first film score in 1961, for Swedish film "The Boy in the Tree," and does his first score for a Hollywood film, "The Pawnbroker," in '64. This leads to dozens of scores, from "Walk Don't Run" to "The Hot Rock," and TV themes for "Ironside," "Sanford and Son" and the "Roots" miniseries.

"I knew it was going to be hard for a black guy to break into movies. ... When I was signed up to do 'In Cold Blood' in '68, Truman Capote did not want me to do that film. He said, 'I just don't understand why you want a colored man's music in a film with no Negroes.' At Universal, they didn't even have any black people in the kitchen then."

-- While Jones is serving as musical director and composer on "The Wiz" in 1978, star Michael Jackson asks if Jones will produce his solo album. Jones agrees, but at first Epic Records declines, saying he's too jazzy. But he produces "Off the Wall," then "Thriller," which becomes the biggest-selling album of all time, eclipsed since then only by the Eagles' greatest-hits disc.

-- Jones produces the song "We Are the World," written by Jackson and Lionel Richie, as a fundraiser for Ethiopian famine victims. Sung by the composers along with pop stars including Bob Dylan, James Ingram, Al Jarreau and Waylon Jennings, the song was a huge seller, raising more than $60 million.

-- Jackson accidentally facilitates Jones' move into full-fledged film producing. Jones was attempting to develop Alice Walker's novel "The Color Purple" into a film. He had already done the seemingly impossible, lining up Steven Spielberg, whom he befriended during the making of "E.T.," to direct the film, budgeted at $14 million. Spielberg agreed to work for scale. Then the film had to be cast.

"I was in Chicago testifying for Michael Jackson in a plagiarism case. I was in the hotel watching news on the TV and saw this reporter, and something made me think she could act. I asked around and they said her name was Oprah. I had never heard a name like that. Oprah spelled backward is Harpo, and we needed to cast Sophia, who was married to Harpo in 'The Color Purple.' It had to happen."

-- Not only did Jones launch the career of the one of the most successful female entertainers of all time, he did the same for the man who's the biggest star in Hollywood right now: Will Smith. Jones spotted his talent when Smith was rapper Fresh Prince and invited him to audition for the show Jones was producing, called "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."

"Will's figured it out. He's bigger than the movies. He's amazing."
