A new issue of "Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker: Carnegie Hall Concert" just came out this month in Europe, on 180g vinyl, through the German label Speakers Corner. And it's the first time ever that the 2 albums (released individually as single LPs at the time of its original release in 1975) appear on a 2-LP set.

The front cover (as shown above) is a little different from all previous analog and digital issues, since it mentions "Volume 1 & 2," and also includes the names of the musicians who appeared in each of the original vinyls. All 8 songs included in the original "Vol.1" and "Vol.2" appear, but this 2-LP set doesn't includes the ninth tune performed, "Margarine," which remains available only on the out-of-print Gold CD issued by Sony in 1995.

For those not familiar to this great CTI album, that November 24, 1974 night at Carnegie Hall was more than a concert; it became a media event, celebrating the first Mulligan/Baker reunion since their heyday in the 50s, when they became the top act of the so-called West Coast Jazz.

The tracklist includes "Line For Lyons," "(Song) For An Unfinished Woman," "My Funny Valentine," (sung by Chet Baker, obviously), Mulligan's haunting ballad "Song For Strayhorn," "It's Sandy At The Beach," Bernie Miller's "Bernie's Tune," the terrific "-4 Pacific," and Harry Warren's lovely standard "There Will Never Be Another You," another feature for Chet Baker's unmistakable vocal style.

According to CTI historian Doug Payne, "the above titles come from a concert featuring Baker, Mulligan, Stan Getz and each of their groups individually. Baker's group included Bob James on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, and Ed Byrne on trombone. Mulligan used the same rhythm section, adding vibist Dave Samuels, guitarist John Scofield and sometimes Baker. Getz - who is not present on the issued titles but whose tenor sax is clearly visible on the cover photo (and confirmed by Gerry Mulligan) - was joined by his own group, highlighted by drummer Buddy Rich and four female singers during one number."

Let's hope that, someday/somehow, the "lost" Getz tracks will also see the light of the day. Something possible by now, since Getz was signed to Columbia (now Sony Music) at the time of the concert, and the label also became owner of all the CTI catalog from the 70s.

However, the most sought-after digital issue ever of "Carnegie Hall Concert" remains the Gold CD released back in 1995 by Sony. For all the previous issues, the original 2-track master tapes (mixed by Rudy Van Gelder for the first vinyl LP in 1975) had been used. But, for the 24-karat Gold CD, with 4-color picture label, the NY-based French Didier Deutsch decided to request engineer Mark Wilder to remix everything at Sony Music Studios in New York.

"We had access to the multi-track tapes, which enabled us to remix the selections properly and make them flow naturally with appropriate audience response," says Didier. He tried to recreate the concert more or less as it happened (without Stan Getz' portion, of course), changing the track sequence to restore the original setlist, and adding a previously unreleased track: "Margarine," composed by Hal Galper (best known for his work as Phil Woods' pianist).

Two other classic CTI albums - George Benson's "White Rabbit" and Paul Desmond's "Pure Desmond" - also came out on Gold CDs remastered with 20-bit digital SBM (Super Bit Mapping) technology. All, unfortunately, currently out-of-print.

New batch of CTI reissues scheduled for release on 24-bit remastered Blu-spec CDs

"CTI Supreme Collection," a new batch of CTI reissues is scheduled for release on December 11, in Asia. These will be the first CTI albums distributed by King Records on Blu-spec CD format (CTI's previous Japanese series came out in 2009 on SHM-CDs remastered by Rudy Van Gelder under supervision of Creed Taylor himself), except for two Seawind albums reissued on that format also in 2009 by Sony.

Blu-spec CD is the next generation Compact Disc that employs the Phase Transition Mastering, the technology developed for mastering of Blu-ray discs, to further perfect the acclaimed characteristics of Blu-spec CD.

Fully compatible with standard CD players, Blu-spec CDs completely alters the experience of music. It applies the manufacturing technologies optimized for the specifications demanded for Blu-ray discs. During the manufacturing of the disc, laser beam is pinpointed to encode data on the microscopic tracks molded on the polycarbonate plastic constituting the surface of the disc.

Compared to the conventional laser beam used for the manufacturing of standard CD, the blue laser beam used for the manufacturing of Blu-spec CD has a shorter wavelength, allowing more accurate encoding of the data. Furthermore, polycarbonate plastic optimized for Blu-ray is used to ensure accurate reading of the data.

These are the 40 titles selected for release on December 11, with suggested retail price in Japan of  ¥1,000, including albums also from CTI's subsidiary labels Kudu and Salvation, most of them engineered by Van Gelder, with gorgeous pics by Pete Turner and Alen MacWeeney, and cover art by Bob Ciano:

Sara Leib was born in Los Angeles December 21, 1981; her father was a furniture designer, her mother a social worker. Her older brother played trumpet; years later, she mimicked the instrument's tone during wordless choruses on her first CD, 2003's self-released and warmly received "It's Not the Moon."

Leib attended L.A.'s prestigious Hamilton Music Academy, where she sang in the jazz choir and also gained a berth in the Grammy High School Jazz Choir. After two years at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, she transferred to the New England Conservatory, studying with Dominique Eade, Steve Lacy, and Jerry Bergonzi and earning a B.M. in Jazz Performance, followed by an M.M. in Jazz from the University of Southern California.

She has performed throughout the world, and currently teaches at the Los Angeles Music Academy College of Music in Pasadena. Leib also gives private voice lessons and teaches classes in improvisation, singing for instrumentalists, and chart writing. Given its depth and originality, "Secret Love" is poised to raise Sara Leib's international jazz profile.

Pianist/composer/arranger, and Steinway artist, Mike Longo, who has earned many accolades as a jazz pianist and a long time associate of Gillespie, formed the New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble in 1999 to play the Jersey Jazz Festival when they wanted to feature him in a setting of composer/arranger. The program was received so enthusiastically that Mike was prompted by jazz fans and the members of the band to keep it going.

As a result, he began composing new material and arranging it for the band, which was booked back each year at the Jersey Festival, followed by several appearances at New York City's famed Birdland jazz club. Their latest CD, "Oasis," climbed to #7 and remained on the charts for an unprecedented 20 weeks. We are proud to present this fabulous group of musicians, featuring jazz singer Ira Hawkins.

Jazz Singer, Actress, and NEA Jazz Master Annie Ross moved with her aunt,singer Ella Logan, to Los Angeles at the age of three, where she became a juvenile film actress, starting on the "Our Gang" series at five. Asa teenager, she moved to New York to study acting, then back to England, where she became a nightclub and band singer. She returned to the U.S. and gained attention in 1952 for her song "Twisted," a "vocalese" setting of humorous lyrics to what had been a saxophone solo by Wardell Gray. (More than 20 years later, Joni Mitchell made a popular recording of the song.)

In 1958, Ross teamed with Dave Lambert and Jon Hendricks in the vocalese trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, and they toured and recorded successfully, their best-known album being their first,"Sing a Song of Basie," a landmark session produced by Creed Taylor for ABC-Paramount and later reissued, on Creed's own CTI label, in 1993. Ross left the trio in 1962 and settled in England, continuing to sing and work as an actress. She returned again to the U.S. in 1985. In 1993, she had a featured role in the Robert Altman film"Short Cuts."

Trumpeter, Bandleader, Educator and NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Owens, one of the founders of the Jazz Foundation of America/Jazz & Blues Emergency Fund is a fine hard bop soloist. He started on the trumpet when he was ten and later studied with Donald Byrd. Owens has played as a sideman with many major players, including Lionel Hampton, Hank Crawford, Charles Mingus, Herbie Mann, Duke Ellington, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and the Dizzy Gillespie Reunion Band. He was one of the founders of the Collective Black Artists.

Class Description:

Learn the basics of Brazilian rhythms and their application to the piano in this dynamic workshop taught by one of the Bay Area's leading interpreters of Brazilian music. Participants will learn the basic patterns for bossa nova, samba, baião, and other important rhythms, as well as how to create interesting variations. Rhythms will be introduced through Brazilian standards but ways to approach American jazz standards from a Brazilian perspective will also be covered.

About the Instructor:

Pianist/composer Anne Sajdera has long been an invaluable part of the San Francisco Bay Area Brazilian music scene—as leader of her own trio and as a sideman with artists such as Alexa Weber Morales and Sandy Cressman. This unofficial 2-CD set, recorded live @ the Great American Music Hall (a vamous jazz venue in San Francisco, CA) on April 5, 1975, includes some hits from Benson's CTI days. Among them: "El Mar" (from "White Rabbit") and "Take Five" (from "Bad Benson") -- both incomplete, unfortunately -- plus a bluesy take on his labelmate Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar" (which Benson originally recorded as a sideman on the landmark "Sugar" album), Phil Upchurch's "No Sooner Said Than Done" (also from "Bad Benson"), George Harrison's biggest hits for the Beatles, "Something" (from "The Other Side of Abbey Road"), Benson's own title track from "Body Talk," "Carifornia Dreamin'" (another favorite he cut for "White Rabbit" back in 1971) and Ronnie Scott's "Ronnie's Groove."

This is music inspired by the cross winds, crashing waves and birdsongs of Galapagos where Cristina resides part of the year in her waterfront home-and idyllic spot in Isabela Island, her previous home for 6 years before moving to America.

The result is an exotically honest sound that strikes pure chords which then lackadaisically mellow out. Akin to the high and low energies of a stroll along a beach in Galapagos or to the dawn or dusk sounds of nature. Never has a jazz artist been able to draw inspiration from the raw nature of Galapagos and inject it with such ease and gusto into her ballads. Highly recommended.

Although strongly influenced by Nina Simone and Abbey Lincoln, Agachiko emerges as her own woman (gifted with a pure and crystal clear tone, very different from her two idols) on her debut CD, delivering a solid set marked by high levels of authoritative singing and refined musicianship. The arrangements (mostly by Russ Gershon) are quite interesting, but neither complex or "complicated," with effective use of trumpet, flute and tenor sax, combined in creative harmonic solutions. Such ballads as "Angel Eyes" and "Since I Fell For You" are beautifully interpreted, but the highlights are Agachiko's strong originals and a memorable rendition of Nina Simone's "Four Women." No concessions to gimmickry or trendy fashions. Just top-class jazz by a top-class singer with a huge potential. Keep her in the radar.

Agachiko has been turning heads since 2008, when the septet led by Kenyan-born, Boston-based vocalist Gabrielle Agachiko was formed. On her debut album "Yes!," released by Accurate Records, she brings an international sensibility to the incantatory spirit of Nina Simone and Abbey Lincoln.

Whether gracefully delivering a pointed political message on "Words," soulfully crooning Buddy Johnson's love-struck blues ballad "Since I Fell for You" (complete with the rarely sung verse), investing Nina Simone's "Four Women" with empathy and anger, or adding lyrics to a new piece by Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke at his invitation, Agachiko is first and foremost a master storyteller.

"I've loved these songs and styles since I was in my 20s, for their emotional depth and musical complexity," says the vocalist, who had a long and fruitful career in indie rock and Off-Broadway musical theater before circling back to jazz. "However, at 20-something, I didn't feel I had the life experience needed to truly convey the meaning. Like any important conversation, jazz must be engaged in at length in order to be well understood. Now, it seems the conversation of life has enabled me to fill these songs with what they deserve."

By the album's title track closer, a wary but insistently upbeat affirmation, Agachiko leaves no doubt about her prowess as a jazz musician, her skills as a songwriter, and her vision as a bandleader who knows how to bring out the best in her collaborators. "I'm always listening to these guys having a conversation," she says. "When you add vocals, you have to make the words count. It has to be about something -- love, loss, pain, sorrow, or joy."

Agachiko the band features guitarist Sam Davis, bassist Blake Newman of the Lizard Lounge poetry band, and drummer Phil Neighbors, as well as an unusual flute-trumpet-sax configuration comprised of Revolutionary Snake Ensemble flutist Ken Field, trumpeter Scott Getchell, and Either/Orchestra tenor saxophonist and founder Russ Gershon, who also wrote most of the album's arrangements.

"Gabrielle holds a universe of sound in her voice," Gershon says. "It's so rich and subtle and controlled. Her voice will just do anything, and she knows a gazillion songs. As an arranger who's very concerned with timbre, voicings, and the emotional content of intervals, I appreciate that she hears it all and can wrap around a chord sequence. It's very different from writing for a blues shouter who wants a lot of punch and Basie flourishes."

Born in Nakuru, Kenya in 1958 to a Kenyan father and African-American mother from Georgia via New York City, Gabrielle Agachiko spent her childhood in East Africa and experienced the rush of optimism and energy following Kenya's independence in 1963. She grew up hearing her father play percussion along with Max Roach albums and her mother blast James Brown on the hi-fi, and felt called to the stage as a performer. At the age of 12 she moved to England to study, but spent several summers and two intermittent years in the U.S., culminating with a move to New York City at 17.

Agachiko completed her studies at Juilliard as a voice student, and had the opportunity to spend several weeks singing with Steve Lacy in Paris. She found herself drawn to musical theater, realizing that acting helped her find her voice as a singer. In the early 1990s, while working with the Boston rock band Atom Said, she got to know Gershon, who was also active on the Boston rock scene. In fact, he didn't realize she had deep jazz roots until almost two decades later, when she resurfaced in Boston after several years away. Greatly impressed by the first incarnation of the band Agachiko, which was primarily a Nina Simone project, he realized that "she's not a jazz singer in the daughters-of-Ella mainstream. She wasn't singing the same 50 tunes as so many jazz vocalists. She's not working out of the same playbook."

Pablo Held, one of my favorite contemporary jazz pianists, display a singular blend of intellect and emotion on "Elders," an impressive showcase of these combined facets as well as a CD that contains an atmosphere of musical warmth. The loose approach allows Held a great deal of melodic freedom as he weaves in and out of chord foundations, unconcerned with key centers and the like.

The repertoire includes five originals composed by Peter Held (Pablo's father and himself a talented pianist) plus amazing reconstructions of Wayne Shorter's title track "The Elders" (from Weather Report's controversial "Mr. Gone"), Joni Mitchell's "Marcie" (from her "Song To A Seagull" album, whose title track was brillianty jazzified by Don Sebesky & Paul Desmond in the 70s, for Don's "Giant Box" masterpiece), Frederic Mompou's "Secreto" (from Impresiones Intimas No. 8") and Manuel de Falla's "Nana," a lullaby from the song cycle "Siete Canciones Populares Españolas."

Pablo Held's expressive capabilities are dramatized by his increasing easy with rhythms and sound-space placement.  The contributions of all his musical partners on this trip are essential to the final brilliant results, and the presence of Ronny Graupe's acoustic guitar adds an extra color to the scores.

This is chamber-jazz in free space, sometimes with quasi-abstract pulsations, full of rhythmic sophistication, while the horns paint over the chords with striking inflections. "Elders" presents a colorful musical world to discover, with music that revels in its beauty and surprising variety˜all for the listener's enjoyment. It reveals much of the past hidden in the present, and how the present can re-energize the past.

Born on December 27th, 1986, Pablo Held has won the first prize at Nordrhein-Westfalen's "Jugend Jazzt" three times - in 1999, 2003, and 2005, the first time as a twelve-year-old! He has played with, among others, the WDR Big Band, Manfred Schoof, Paul Heller, and Niels Klein. Held studied in Cologne with the outstanding German pianist Hubert Nuss. Held has alrady recorded 5 albums for the German label Pirouet, counting "Elders," scheduled for release on November 23.

I still prefer two of Pablo Held's earlier albums -- "Forest of Oblivion" (2008) and "Music" (2010), which placed him high in the past Arnaldo DeSouteiro's Jazz Station Polls, being voted "Best New Talent" in 2008 and #5 top acoustic piano player in 2010 -- as my personal favorites of all his Pirouet releases, but "Elders" comes closer to them.

R.I.P.: Norma Bengell

Brazilian singer, model, actress, movie producer and movie director.
Her rendition of "Fever" -- yes, the same song recorded by Peggy Lee and Madonna -- from her stunning debut album, "Oooooh Norma!" (arranged by Lindolpho Gaya in 1959), became a dancefloor hit in the acid jazz scene of the 80s and 90s, being included in many best-selling compilations such as "Groovy Vol. 4 - A Collection Of Rare Jazzy Club Tracks" (on the IRMA label), alongside tracks by Herbie Hancock, Deodato and Esther Phillips.
Norma Bengell also achieved a big hit in Brazil with her 1964 recording of "Você," a duet with pianist-vocalist Dick Farney which was most recently included on the "Woman On Top" soundtrack (Sony) as well as on the compilation "Bossa Nova Singers," produced by Arnaldo DeSouteiro for Verve in 2007.

New batch of CD reissues includes albums by Miroslav Vitous, Ray Barretto, Stanley Turrentine, Pat Martino, Herbie Mann & Mingus Dinasty

An excellent batch of CD reissues just came out in Asia, by Warner Music Japan, a few days ago. Among the rare items released on September 25 is Miroslav Vitous' fusion-funk-disco trip "Magical Shepherd" (1976), produced by David Rubinson and featuring Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, James Gadson and Airto Moreira plus vocalists Cheryl Grainger and Onike Lee. It had been previously released on CD in the USA ten years ago, by the independent label Wounded Bird, but remained in-print for only six months and immediately became a much sought-after title.

Another eagerly awaited item is top conguero Ray Barretto's "Can You Feel It," originally released by Atlantic in 1978. This latin-soul-disco session, mixed at Electric Lady Studios in NY, features Clifford Carter, Neil Stubenhaus, Andy Newmark, Hiram Bullock, Neil Larsen, Jeff Richman, Eddie Rivera and vocalists Cissy Houston, Googie Coppola (the extremely underrated singer who recorded with Hermeto Pascoal, Flora Purim, John Blair, Jeremy Steig and David Matthews), and Ray's daughter, Kelly Barretto, who later would work with Eumir Deodato.
