Barbara Dennerlein in September

New CD "Spiritual Movement No. 2" release in September

It is Barbara Dennerlein's second CD with jazz on a church organ: "Spiritual Movement No. 2" will be released on September 26th. It's proven not only by numerous compositions that the pipe organ has become an unalterable part of her artistic work. This year Barbara plays 50 concerts of in total more than 120 on pipe organs or as a two-part Hammond-/pipe organ concert. The CD showcases her concert on November 16th, 2007 at the Emperor William Memorial Church in Berlin. Unlike her CD "Spiritual Movement No. 1", with the St. Martin Church in Memmingen at the musician's disposal as exquisite studio, "Spiritual Movement No. 2" exudes the live concert atmosphere.

Wallowing in expressive improvisations characterizes Barbara's concerts and is central part of all eight titles. Seven tracks are Barbara Dennerlein originals and one is - unexpectedly - an interpreted classic rock piece. The artist had spent meticulous effort on the registrations and thus the acoustic frame for interpretation and improvisation during the concert fathoming the special sound skills of the mighty Schuke organ with four manuals, 63 stops, and 5000 pipes.

Barbara's music effects the complete transformation of 5000 organ pipes to a jazz instrument with no "ifs" "ands" or "buts." The result is a phenomenal groove. Barbara Dennerlein’s uncompromising pursuit of intensity, drive, and the intoxication of timbre are on display in her blues compositions takes things yet again to the next level like an improvised thunderstorm of uncommon originality and gradually speed. It’s a spectacular piece performed by an absolutely extraordinary talent. This CD comes with a promise, each time one listens to it he is apt to discover a new aspect of his own musical world.

Full house under the sky

5000 people occupied the old town sqare completely when Barbara Dennerlein and saxophone player Chico Freeman played on the 14th. International Festival in Warsaw. The special atmosphere of the venue and the large audience made this concert to a great event for both visitors and musicians. In October, Dennerlein and Freeman will meet again in Hoorn/NL.

Jazz northern the polar circle

Barbara Dennerlein is back from her jazz cruise along the Norwegian coast up to the northernmost settlement of Europe. Together with SWR Radio Big Band, Randy Brecker and other jazz artists she performed the concert programme for the guests on board of the "MS Europa". "It was a new experience for me because I had never been on a cruise ship before", she explains. "Great vibes and it was fun to be at sea together with these great collegues for 12 days. It was also a sportmanslike challenge to be on stage during see-saw swell and to keep the balance and the "swing". Because if you play Hammond organ with bass pedals and mostly closed eyes to concentrate on the music you get your balance out of the center of your body."

Concerts in September

Two European festivals are scheduled for September. Ten years "Most + Jazz Festival" are to be celebrated in Fehring in Austria. And Barbara Dennerlein celebrates twice with a church organ concert and a Big Band concert two days later. In Switzerland, Flawil will be first time the place of a three days lasting jazz festival. Barbara Dennerlein will perform in trio line-up and thus supports the dedicated jazz friends to start a new concert tradition called JazzInFlawil.

Barbara Dennerlein at Monterey Jazz Festival

Let's change from the most recent to the longest running jazz festival in the world: the Monterey Jazz Festival opens for the 51st time and is undoubtedly one of the most famous jazz festivals in the world. The unique atmosphere of the oak-studded Monterey Fairgrounds that has been the site of the Festival since its inception in 1958 with the rustic Arena and eight other stages spread throughout the grounds attracts thousands of visitors each year. From gate opening at 6:00 pm on Friday through Sunday night's closing concerts, the Monterey Jazz Festival offers 3 nights and 2 days of nonstop jazz entertainment. On the last evening, Barbara Dennerlein and her two sidemen will heat up the masses with uniquely played Hammond jazz. In the second part of the concert evening the Hammond fans will be pleased by Hammond legend Brian Auger.

The second venue in California is Yoshi's in Oakland. Founded in 1973, Yoshi's built itself into one of the world's most respected jazz venues and won a reputation as the Bay Area's premier location for people who were looking for great food and the best jazz. Yoshi's has hosted legendary jazz greats such as Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Branford Marsalis and Oscar Peterson among hundreds of others. Barbara is looking forward to the concert not only becaus of the japanese food but also because this concert had been planned for 2007 and had to be deferred due to organisational difficulties with the "I-797" (regular newsletter readers may know what we mean).

Big jump from America to Russia

Barbara's Birthday seems to drop out this year - "sorry, no time for that!" With only an intermediate landing in Munich the musician will travel from the USA straight to Russia. In Chelyabinsk and Samara, both megacities in the South, she will play two-part concerts together with Rhoda Scott taking jazz to the pipe organs of the philharmonic halls.
