Annie Sellick live @ Steamers, tonite!
ANNIE SELLICK
Annie Sellick may be compared to the greats - "Ella's playfulness, Carmen's attitude, Betty's instincts and Anita's flair..." (Greg Lee, WMOT jazz radio). But, she is unequivocally and undeniably an original. Don't let her southern drawl, as sweet as biscuits n' honey, cause you to make assumptions, because there is nothing shy or demure about Ms. Sellick's control - of the stage, the music, her sound, and her audience.
It's quite obvious she is totally at home as a live performer, immediately engaging her audiences with an innate ability to make everyone in the room feel like she is performing just for them. But these special gifts aside, it's Annie's pure talent as a musician that is earning her rave reviews and a growing fan base around the world.
Annie lives in Nashville, Tennessee; however, she is quick to tell you "growing up in 'Music City' I hated country music."But Nashville is home base for some of the finest musicians in the world playing every genre of music."I have had the opportunity to play with a very talented pool of Nashville-based jazz players, and it has been a great place to cut my teeth and learn. These days I am learning from Nashville musicians of all styles.There is such a high level of musicianship here, and the support of the community is unparalleled."
At first, Annie had no intention of pursuing a career as a performer, which would likely have led to "a roller coaster life and living in her parents' basement at 30!"Then one evening in a "dive bar" near the college she attended in Middle Tennessee, Annie sat in with guitarist Roland Gresham. "The only standards I knew were 'Fever' and 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow," she remembers, laughing."I sang 'Fever' and everybody went berserk."The band hired her then and there.She recalls getting the names of jazz singers from a friend, tracking down their albums, learning the tunes a few at a time and then returning to the club to sing them.
Annie's career had a fairytale beginning - not unlike Lana Turner wearing the right sweater into Schwab's Drugstore in Hollywood. But there is nothing make-believe about her talent. Her obvious ease in front of an audience, the naturalness of her voice, her sense of timing and interpretation of lyrics, her feel for the music - these elements all came together during this time. While performing gigs at night, she studied her craft at the Nashville Jazz Workshop and was offered their first work/study opportunity. The Nashville jazz community and its fans spread the word about this young pixie-faced singer with the long dreads whose voice denied both her youth and looks - adding to her charm and appeal.
Today, Annie is a mainstay at the major jazz venues in Nashville, where she has performed with all of Music City's jazz artists, including Beegie Adair, Jeff Coffin, Rod McGaha and Bela Fleck. She is the resident vocalist with the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, with whom she has recorded, and she gave a celebrated sold-out performance with the Nashville Symphony Pops Orchestra, "An Evening of Jazz." She has won a large, devoted following in her home town that has garnered five consecutive "Best Jazz Artist" awards from the Nashville media and the #1 best selling local artist for two years at Tower Records Nashville.
She stepped up her music studies, taking guitar at the New School while living and performing in New York City for a time. Annie also coached with Rebecca Paris in Boston and Rhiannon in Hawaii.Soon, she was stretching her wings beyond the Nashville area traveling to Europe, Japan, Canada and throughout the United States establishing solid fan bases centered in Atlanta and Birmingham, the major cities along the east coast from Hilton Head to West Palm Beach, Cincinnati, Los Angeles and Montreal.
Her club appearances in Montreal resulted in an invitation to perform at the 2006 and 2008 Montreal Jazz Festivals. She has also made regular appearances at West Coast Jazz Party, Newport Beach Jazz Party, Vail Jazz Festival and she opened for Curtis Stigers at the Gene Harris Jazz Festival. In 2006, she toured with Mark O'Connor's Hot Swing. She has made six Japan tours covering twenty cities both as a soloist and featured vocalist with John DiMartino, David Hazeltine, Grant Stewart and the late Eddie Higgins.
Annie has recorded four CD's on her own label Chalice Music, Inc. Her debut recording, "Stardust on My Sleeve" (2000 Chalice Music, Inc.) features a swinging piano trio - pianist Lori Mecham, bassist Roger Spencer and Chris Brown on drums - and Annie's strong interpretations of standards such as Lullaby of the Leaves, Twisted, You Go to My Head, Gravy Waltz and How Insensitive.Fans on CDBaby.com write, "To hear Annie sing is to feel like you're falling in love...She doesn't just sing, she swings, tells stories, shares her heart and celebrates simultaneously."
Her second effort, "No Greater Thrill" (2002 Chalice Music, Inc.) features Hammond B-3 royalty Joey DeFrancesco."I felt a connection to the jazz B-3 organ after playing around Nashville with Moe Denham."Annie met DeFrancesco at NAMM in 2002 and a friendship began.DeFrancesco had produced Denham's CD, and he agreed to return to Nashville to work with Annie and two sought after session players guitarist Pat Bergeson and drummer Jim White.
Annie's third CD, "A Little Piece of Heaven" (2004 Chalice Music, Inc.), is her first live recording captured at The Vic Jazz Club in Santa Monica, California. The rhythm section is an all-star line-up of L.A.'s top players - young lion Gerald Clayton on piano with Dan Lutz on bass and Kevin Kanner on drums.Guitarist Bruce Forman sits in on eight tunes. Sellick worked with stellar arranger/composer Shelly Berg who arranged a collection of lesser-known standards just for this project. Critic Roger Crane reviewed the performance for the L.A. Jazz Scene writing, "Annie Sellick is very much a jazz singer, who focuses on the music, but she is also a storyteller...After now seeing her perform twice, I see no reason why she should not be a star." An "utterly unique musical personality," wrote Don Heckman of the Los Angeles Times.
Los Angeles jazz fans love Annie Sellick, too. Her regular appearances there with Gerald Clayton's trio has had a significant impact on her music and her career, leading to collaborations with many L.A. notables -Tamir Hendelman, Kristin Korb, Llew Matthews, Josh Nelson, Mark Winkler and Taylor Eigsti among them.
"Drummer Jeff Hamilton happened to catch a video of one of my shows at Steamers in Fullerton, and he invited me to work with his trio." It seemed a studio recording capturing the energy and symbiosis with some of these Southern California's players was due. Annie took into the studio two trios - "trio one" fronted by Gerald Clayton and "trio two" fronted by Jeff Hamilton. These collaborations became her fifth CD release entitled "Street of Dreams" (2009 Chalice Music, Inc.) featuring arrangements by Gerald, Jeff, Josh Nelson and Tamir Hendelman (Barbara Steisand's arranger). Samples of two cuts - "Cloudburst" and "Do It Again" - can be heard at this link http://www.anniesellick.com/music-and-video.phpon her website.
A highly praised fourth CD is a celebration of her Nashville roots; a musical incarnation of acoustic jazz and swing called "Annie and the Hot Club. "She started sitting in with the Hot Club of Nashville whose guitar-driven swing is lead by master picker Richard Smith. Their live shows selling out and fan pressure at a fever pitch, she succumbed to the pressure producing "Annie Sellick presents 'Annie and the Hot Club' Perform the Music of Tom Sturdevant" (2007 Chalice Music, Inc.).
The then sixty-four year old Sturdevant was virtually unknown as a songwriter and better known as a filmmaker and game designer. He had more than 200 tunes in his repertoire when, "I found a message on my machine from Annie Sellick saying she loved my songs and wanted to sing them.I felt like I had won the lottery!" One of the tracks,"Chickadee-n-Cockadoodledoo," won 4th place in the Vocal Jazz Song category in the 2009 Just Plain Folks Music Awards, the world's largest music competition. The song passed through 10,000 judges and past 500,000 other entries, and is getting play all over the world. In addition to their growing number of fans in the states, Annie and the Hot Club are popular guest artists at European guitar festivals, including regular appearances at the Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Festival in Germany.
Annie can also be heard on these recording projects:"Live at B.B. King's - Nashville Jazz Orchestra featuring Annie Sellick" (2005 Artist Development Group), "Low Standards" (2005 Sons of Sound) and "Backward Compatible" (Vibraphone Music 2008) both with Steve Shapiro and Pat Bergeson and "Street Expressionism" with Paradigm Shift (2007 Nagel-Heyer Records).
Annie's busy 2009 touring schedule has kept her on the road most of the year. She returned to Germany this past spring with guitarists Pat Bergeson and Joe Robinson (winner of "Australia's Got Talent 2008") playing at the famous Fabrik in Hamburg, theMusikmesse in Frankfurt, plus stops in ten additional cities. Appearances also included multiple appearances in Asheville, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Louisville, Palm Beach, Scottsdale, and Los Angeles and environs.
During the summer of '09, Annie stayed a bit closer to home with a number of dates in Nashville and a special project that is very close to her heart. She worked with teenage girls at a camp called Act Like A Grrrrl, serving as a co-leader. The girls spend time writing, sharing their stories, and then by incorporating words, movement, music and visual arts, they present a performance at the end of camp. "Each girl has so much to share with the world, and the goal is to give them the support, tools and confidence to get out there and be themselves."For more information, visit www.actlikeagrrrl.com.
She is also developing workshops for singers. "Singers have a lot in common and we don't always have the chance to come together." In addition, Annie is writing songs for her first "all original" recording project, and performing as a duo with husband/guitarist Pat Bergeson.
There are many ways to get your Annie Sellick "fix" until you can catch her live. Her CDs are available at www.cdbaby.com and you may watch and listen to her many music samples and performance videos at My Space and You Tube.

Entries came from all over the world, from South Africa to Estonia, Malta to Uganda, Israel to El Salvador, India to Tanzania, and everywhere in between. The country showing the most growth in entries was Australia, and for the first time ever, became the country with the most entries next to the USA.

Obama: Details of the President's plan
Our records show that you currently live in California's 30th Congressional District.
President Obama just released a new health reform proposal -- and our political director sent me an overview that I wanted to share with you.
Here's the bottom line: It's a plan that puts Americans in charge of their own health care, bridges the gap between the Senate and House bills, and adds additional ideas from both parties to fight waste and abuse.
The plan will serve as a starting point for discussion at a major bipartisan meeting this Thursday between the President and congressional leaders to discuss Republican and Democratic ideas for improving our health care system. And if there are more areas of agreement, they'll be added to the plan.
Ultimately, we're going to move forward with a bill that lowers costs, increases competition, provides relief for families and small businesses, and covers the uninsured -- and we'll need your help to do it.
Please take a look below at the details of the proposal so that you'll have all the info you'll need for the fight ahead. And if you want to find out more about how the proposal would affect you, click here:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/health-care-meeting
Thanks,
Mitch

Subject: Details of the President's plan
Mitch --
FYI, here's a quick overview from the White House of the President's just-released proposal on health reform. Exciting stuff.
It builds on legislation passed by the House and Senate, bridging the differences in those bills while adding new provisions.
The most notable addition is the creation of a new "Health Insurance Rate Authority," which would give the federal government the power to review unreasonable rate increases and other unfair practices by the big insurance companies.
The policy experts I speak to think this is a really strong improvement -- and would help a lot of people in places where insurers are jacking up rates like they are in California, Maine, and around the country.

*******
Overview of the President's Proposal
The President's Proposal puts American families and small business owners in control of their own health care.
-- It makes insurance more affordable by providing the largest middle class tax cut for health care in history, reducing premium costs for tens of millions of families and small business owners who are priced out of coverage today. This helps over 31 million Americans afford health care who do not get it today -- and makes coverage more affordable for many more.
-- It sets up a new competitive health insurance market giving tens of millions of Americans the exact same insurance choices that members of Congress will have.
-- It brings greater accountability to health care by laying out commonsense rules of the road to keep premiums down and prevent insurance industry abuses and denial of care.
-- It will end discrimination against Americans with pre-existing conditions.
-- It puts our budget and economy on a more stable path by reducing the deficit by $100 billion over the next ten years -- and about $1 trillion over the second decade -- by cutting government overspending and reining in waste, fraud and abuse.
It includes a targeted set of changes to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the Senate-passed health insurance reform bill. Key changes include:
-- Eliminating the Nebraska Medicaid provision and providing significant additional federal financing to all states for the expansion of Medicaid;
-- Closing the Medicare prescription drug "donut hole" coverage gap;
-- Strengthening the Senate bill's provisions that make insurance affordable for individuals and families;
-- Strengthening the provisions to fight fraud, waste, and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid;
-- Increasing the threshold for the excise tax on the most expensive health plans from $23,000 for a family plan to $27,500 and starting it in 2018 for all plans;
-- Improving insurance protections for consumers and creating a new Health Insurance Rate Authority to provide federal assistance and oversight to states in conducting reviews of unreasonable rate increases and other unfair practices of insurance plans.

CD of the Week - "Loren Stillman: Winter Fruits"
Loren Stillman: "Winter Fruits" (Pirouet) 2009
Rating: *****
The follow-up to "Blind Date," recorded in 2007 with Gary Versace (on piano), Drew Gress (bass) & Joey Baron (drums), which led Stillman to place # 3 in the alto sax category of the Jazz Station Poll that year, this new "Winter Fruits" once again features Versace, but this time on organ, plus Nate Radley (electric guitar) & Ted Poor (drums). A bass-less contemporary jazz quartet was formed and... bingo! It's a perfect session, with eight highly inventive originals - six composed by the leader and two by the subtle drummer.
Surprising, radiant, with a spellbinding air of mystery and magic, "Winter Fruits" earned the NY-based English reedman Loren Stillman to be acclaimed as the "best alto sax of 2009" in the 31st Annual Jazz Station Poll, since his stunning performance had been even better than the ones by Kenny Garrett, Phil Woods, Anthony Braxton and Lee Konitz on their respective projects released last year.
"Winter Fruits," with its outstanding sax-guitar-organ-drums instrumentation, also led Gary Versace (who placed # 8 in the 2009 DownBeat Readers Poll) to the top of the organ players in our list, thanks to an extremely personal and creative approach on this instrument, with touches of the best of Larry Young here and there, but mostly Versace's own voice. For complete results of the poll, please check:

Magician of musical textures and colours, virtuoso of shading, Loren Stillman writes with stylistic self-assurance and sensitivity about the most sensual mysteries of modern jazz. With breathtaking joy at the musical give-and-take, rhythmic compactness, and striking precision, these four musicians achieve a marvellous world of sounds full of riveting mystery and textural nuances of delicate subtlety and masterful enchantment.
Alto saxophonist Loren Stillman has an amazingly creative head on his shoulders: he makes music that is so absorbingly different. Stillman knows how to ensnare his listeners. He does it with expertise and subtlety, and his captives enjoy their imprisonment. Stillman was born in 1980 in London, but he grew up in the USA in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, and currently lives in Brooklyn. His uncle, saxophonist Mike Stillman, inspired him to pick up that instrument, and so at the age of seven Loren began to take lessons from him. Over the last years he has been acclaimed by such magazines as Down Beat as a "rising star", and has played with Charlie Haden, Dave Liebman, and John Abercrombie. He names Lee Konitz and Wayne Shorter as musical influences, but along with them he also counts Hungarian composer Béla Bartók and the master of many styles, Frank Zappa.
Loren will be performing tomorrow, February 24, at Barnes (see post above, please). If you're in the NY area, don't miss it.

Jabbo Ware's Orchestra live @ Gillespie Auditorium, NY, tomorrow, Feb 23
The John Birks Gillespie Auditorium, dedicated to the late jazz great Dizzy Gillespie, who was a Bahá'í, is located within the New York City Bahá'í Center. Beginning on January 6, 2004, the anniversary of Dizzy’s death, his former pianist and musical director, Mike Longo, began presenting weekly jazz concerts every Tuesday evening at 8:00 and 9:30 PM.
The "Me, We and Them Orchestra" was founded in 1973 by James Jabbo Ware. Brought up in the south with the influence of the church and the black community, Mr. Ware creates music built around life experiences. His vision of the family as an ongoing historical unit to which we all belong is symbolized by his concept of the big band as a family.
This performance at the New York City Bahá'í Center is made possible by Y’all of New York and The Phaedrus Foundation. Y’all of New York, Inc., is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the composition, development, promotion and preservation of creative music. Its mission is to extend the musical vocabulary grounded in the roots and traditions of American Jazz music. It seeks to develop the next generation of musicians by sponsoring educational classes and forums, producing concerts, and promoting the work of established and emerging composers.
Admission is 15.00, $10.00 for students.
Tickets will be sold at the door, or call 212-222-5159 for advance tickets and information.
The John Birks Gillespie Auditorium is located in the heart of Greenwich Village within the NYC Baha'i Center:

New York, NY 10003
Call (212) 222-5159 with any questions.

The founder of the ME, WE AND THEM ORCHESTRA, composer/arranger/ saxophonist James “Jabbo” Ware was born in Rome, Georgia in 1942. He began his musical training on alto saxophone in St. Louis, Mo. in 1960, under the guidance of Mr. Harry Winn, a tenor saxophonist who had travelled throughout the South playing in swing bands during the 1920s and ’30s. In the middle through late 1960s, Mr. Ware played in various rhythm and blues bands, and composed for and performed with BAG (the Black Artists Group of St. Louis), among whose members were Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill, J.D. Parran and Hamiett Bluiett. It was after he first “heard” Mr. Bluiett’s sound on baritone saxophone that Mr. Ware switched to that instrument, and it was Mr. Bluiett who convinced him to move to New York in 1970.
Once in New York, Mr. Ware studied improvisation and composition with George Coleman. While a member of the CBA Band (Collective Black Artists), and of bands led by Frank Foster and Sam Rivers, Mr. Ware met many of the musicians who now make up the ME, WE AND THEM ORCHESTRA. Through his association with Archie Shepp, Mr. Ware met the late Cal Massey, who premiered two of Mr. Ware’s early compositions at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
As a result of the encouragement he received from colleagues such as Mr. Massey, and in realization of a dream he had nurtured since playing in George Hudson’s big band in St. Louis, Mr. Ware formed the ME, WE AND THEM ORCHESTRA in 1973.
Mr. Ware’s music is concerned with telling stories based on his favorite themes: “Where do we come from?” and “Where are we going?”. The titles of Mr. Ware’s compositions mean what they say, and the order in which they are presented in concert is always carefully planned. As Mr. Ware explains;
“At first, the audience may not understand where I’m trying to take them, but by the time they get there, they’ll know...”
Mr. Ware’s vision of the family as an ongoing unit to which we all belong is symbolized by his concept of the big band as a family: “ME” represents the Creator; “WE” represents the mother and father; “THEM” represents the children.

João Gilberto: "Chega de Saudade" reissued today in Japan
Prior to the Gilberto album, Él had released some interesting compilations featuring Luiz Bonfá, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Laurindo Almeida, Carmen Miranda and, in the jazz field, Gary McFarland, Mel Tormé, Yusef Lateef, Cal Tjader, Ahmad Jamal, Gabor Szabo and Grady Tate, amongst others. They had also reissued albums by Jobim ("Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro"), Nara Leão ("Nara '67"), Rogério Duprat ("A Banda Tropicalista do Duprat") and Rita Lee ("Build Up"), among other rarities such as the soundtrack to Brigitte Bardot's debut film, "And God Created Woman," featuring Brazilian percussionist extraordinaire Jadir de Castro.
On its turn, the Solid label currently has nothing less than 540 CDs (and 5 DVDs) in-print on its catalog, mostly by singers like Peggy Lee, Blossom Dearie and Aretha Franklin.
For March 17, Solid is already announcing the Japanese release of a CD compilation titled "The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim", also licensed from the Él label. Its opening track is João Gilberto's legendary version of "Desafinado." For more details:

Diana will tour Australia for the first time since 2005 and has toured New Zealand for the very first time ever in support of her twelfth album "Quiet Nights". Since her last visit she has given birth to twin boys, released four albums, the "Live in Rio" DVD, produced and performed on Barbra Streisand’s "Love is the Answer", and toured extensively across the United States, Europe and Asia.
Reviews for Diana’s Quiet Nights tour have been uniformly glowing with The Los Angeles Independent writing “…nothing was musically impossible with Diana Krall’s easy and sublime performance” and the Winnipeg Sun called it a “…flawlessly executed performance from all concerned”.
Since her debut in 1993, Diana has topped both the pop and jazz charts and sold millions of records worldwide. She has proven her genuine talent and credibility as a mold-breaking jazz musician time and time again.
Returning to Australia and New Zealand for the first time since her sold out 2007 tour is Madeleine Peyroux. Her latest album offering "Bare Bones" is the followup to previous albums "Half The Perfect World" and her million plus selling breakthrough CD "Careless Love."
Rounding out this unexpected Verve touring lineup is Melody Gardot, who recently took Australia by storm during a short promotional visit, including two sold out showcases, in support of her new album "My One and Only Thrill."
To see these three Verve artists all on the same bill is a rare opportunity and one that will be embraced by music lovers.

Sheila Jordan live in California, Feb 21 & 27
A living legend shares her story!
One of the few remaining legends of jazz vocals and called "one of the most distinctive voices in jazz" according to National Public Radio (NPR), Sheila Jordan brings her extraordinary bebop style and knowledge to Ventura and Los Angeles, California. Sheila has performed and recorded with some of the worlds greatest musicians including Charles Mingus, Steve Kuhn, Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Kurt Elling and countless others, spreading her message of love for the music of jazz wherever she travels.
Jordan's singing began in Detroit during the 1940's where she was inspired by Charlie Parker who was her "musical guru" and dear friend. Ms Jordan is best known for her innovative bass and voice recordings and for being the first recorded jazz singer on the 1962 debut Blue Note recording Portrait of Sheila.
On Sunday, February 21st from 2 PM to 5 PM she will give a joint workshop, with top-class jazz vocalist and educator Ellen Johnson, in Ventura. The two are collaborating on a biography of Sheila Jordan's life and music that they plan to have available later in the year. For more information or to register for the workshop go to www.VocalVisions.net, call 805-272-8125 or email info@vocalvisions.net.
Then on Saturday, February 27th Ms Jordan will be performing with a phenomenal trio of some of the most respected jazz musicians in the world: Alan Pasqua (piano), Peter Erskine (drums) and Tom Warrinton (bass), at Vitellos in Studio City with two shows at 8 PM and 10 PM. To make reservations or for more information contact: 818-769-0905 or www.vitellosrestaurant.com
For more information about Sheila Jordan visit her website at: http://www.SheilaJordanJazz.com
The prestigious All Music Guide website says that vocalist Sheila Jordan is "one of the most consistently creative of all jazz singers." Setting the bar in jazz by being the first recorded jazz singer on the 1962 debut Blue Note recording "Portrait of Sheila" and "You Are My Sunshine" with George Russell's The Outer View, Jordan has since become an iconic jazz figure, influencing many other artists in the jazz vocal genre. The New York Times raves, "Her ballad performances are simply beyond the emotional and expressive capabilities of most other vocalists."
Sheila has performed and recorded with some of the worlds greatest musicians spreading her message of love for the music of jazz wherever she travels. Jordan's singing began in Detroit during the 1940's where she was initially inspired by Charlie Parker, her "musical guru" and dear friend. She honed her skills, sitting in with Parker and other musicians when they came to town to perform in the Bluebird, the Sudan and other local clubs.
Moving to New York City in the early 50s, she sang in Greenwich Village clubs and at jam sessions with some of the city's jazz giants, including Charles Mingus and Herbie Nichols, and studied with legendary pianist Lennie Tristano. After touring with trombonist Roswell Rudd in the late 70s, Jordan became a founding member of the Steve Kuhn Quartet, where she met bassist Harvie S. (formerly known as Swartz). Soon afterward, she and Harvie formed one of the most innovative bass and voice duets where they both traveled extensively, both nationally and internationally. Her love for the bass continued with recordings and performances with bassist Cameron Brown and their most recent recordings, "I've Grown Accustomed to the Bass," "The Very Thought of Two" and "Celebration - Live at the Triad (NYC)."
For much of the last 30 years, like her colleague (and my dear friend) Mark Murphy, with whom she recorded the landmark CD "One for Junior" for Muse in 1991 - arranged by Bill Mays and featuring Harvie Swartz on bass - Jordan has been extremely active in teaching young students the ropes of jazz singing, and has made her living by combination of touring and teaching. Sheila initiated the jazz vocal program at New York City's City College, has been a faculty member of "Jazz in July" at the University of Massachusetts ((Amherst), visiting professor at Stanford University, taught at the New School for Social Research, Manhattan School of Music, Musica Hochschule in Graz, Austria and continues to teach workshops throughout the world.
Sheila Jordan has appeared in festivals and clubs both nationally and internationally with rave reviews from critics even at the age of 81. She has received two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, the Lil Hardin Armstrong Jazz Heritage Award for Excellence the IAJE Humanitarian Award, New York City MAC Award, New York Nightlife Award and the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz for Lifetime of Service Award. Down Beat's International Critics Poll has named her the winner of "Talent Deserving Wider Recognition" honors nine times and has placed her among the top five singers in the "Established Talent" category every year since 1980. Vinyl of the Day - "In Flagranti w/ Natalie Smash: Ex Ex Ex"
In Flagranti feat. Natalie Smash: "Ex Ex Ex" (Codex) 2010
Description: In Flagranti return with more disco mayhem, spread over two twelves. "Ex Ex Ex" is superbly chunky, wonky disco-not-disco cut reminiscent of post-punk outfits like Pulsallama, and comes complete with a brilliantly oddball rap and warbling vocal by Natalie Smash. Side A features vocal, instrumental and acapella versions. Then it's on to the refixes: Riton takes a sidestep from his usual electro sound to drop something much funkier with a touch of synth squealing. Headman delivers another of his tougher acidic disco-not-disco offerings. DJ Wool jacks it in a funk electro style. Gomma's Golden Bug comes up with a hot and sampladelic b-boy disco-funk version. Hercules (as in 'And Love Affair') goes slo-mo in some retro cosmic house vibe. Which leaves Bottin to fly the flag for galloping Italo disco.
