dee Brown releases "No Time to Waste"

dee Brown has completed his first solo project entitled No Time to Waste on nuGroove Records. The new project showcases his skill as a smooth jazz inspirational guitarist/composer/producer/arranger.

On this project, dee needed something to spice up the music in a fresh way and called on Gerald Mitchell of Los Harmons, a dear friend and producer, to co-produce the project.dee Brown was born in Detroit, Michigan. He is the youngest of three children. His parents George and Roceal Brown exposed him to music at a young age. Dee can remember as a child hearing jazz being played by his father all day long. He heard music from his father's favorite artists: Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus, Les McCann, Cannonball Adderly, King Pleasure and Charles Christian. His mother on the other hand was really into the Motown Sound. She would play music by the Four Tops, The Miracles, The Jackson 5 and James Brown. This started dee on his way to learn elements of several different forms and styles of music.

No Time to Waste is now available on nuGroove Records.

"Here's a step-by-step guide on how to create a hot new name in Smooth Jazz guitar. Take a guy with Detroit roots, raised by a mother who was into Motown and disco and a father who was into jazz. Introduce him at a young age to the music of Wes Montgomery. Give him a guitar for Christmas. Encourage him. Give him the time to mature into a solid professional. There you have it in a nutshell: the recipe for musical success that's led to the first solo Smooth Jazz release for the incredibly talented Dee Brown. NO TIME TO WASTE is a cool breath of fresh funk and grooves on today's Smooth Jazz scene..." - Scott O'Brien, SmoothJazz.com

Lee Genesis survives car rollover In Miami

Singer Lee Genesis, who was showcased earlier this year in Boston and in New York City, was taking part in the Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach on Friday, [March 28] when a runaway parked car rolling downhill ran over him.

“It’s a miracle I’m alive and OK,” said Lee. “After the late night events were over, I had parked the car, but forgot that the car was still in “drive” and the driveway of the Miami Beach Resort & Spa Hotel is on an incline. Then I dropped my keys while getting out of the car and the car began to roll downhill and when I tried to stop it, it just rolled over me!”

“Everyone was screaming and then a really nice guy with emergency medical training came over and started praying to Jesus that I would be alright and I got up and walked away from the spot where I’d fallen. The car rolled over my shoulder blade, but there was a depression in the ground that saved me--when my body fell, I fell into that depression so the full force of the car didn’t hit me. The ambulance came and the hospital did a bunch of x-rays at 5:30 am in their trauma center and everything seems to be fine. I’m bruised and on Percodan, but otherwise I’m OK. Doctors said it was a miracle,” stated Lee.

Genesis’ new CD, The Soul of Lee Genesis is garnering sales and airplay around the U.S. but even more so throughout Europe where R&B, soul and jazz are more widely admired.

Genesis’ new dance CD, The House of Lee Genesis is also generating a great deal of interest here but in Europe there is even more excitement as tours of Italy are being offered by industry titans who heard his soulful singing at the conference in Miami.

Lee Genesis and his full 8 piece band are scheduled to appear at Scullers Jazz Club in September this year.

R.I.P.: Gene Puerling

Gene Puerling
(born March 31, 1929, died March 25, 2008)
A great singer (bass-baritone), a superb vocal arranger and the founder/leader of two legendary vocal groups: The Hi-Lo's and The Singers Unlimited.

Message from Clark Burroughs, another founding member of The Hi-Lo's):
"Don Shelton phoned me last night with the news.
My old friend, most admired mentor and lifelong near-brother passed into the next existence night before last.
I wish with all my being that I could stand next to him one more time. There were times when we were one voice, somehow larger than our two voices. His genius informed my entire life. His harmonies are embedded in my bones, and his humor followed me through more than six decades. I'll always love him."

According to Carman J. Price, here's the most complete bio that can be found on the web...http://www.singers.com/arrangers/genepuerling.html
"Gene also won a Grammy Award in 1982 for his classic arrangement of "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" as recorded by the Manhattan Transfer", Price adds.

Gene Puerling, Grammy-Winning Arranger Dies
by Jesse Hamlin
San Francisco Chronicle, April 3, 2008

Gene Puerling, the Grammy-winning vocal arranger whose intricate, harmonically rich arrangements for the Hi-Lo's and The Singers Unlimited influenced many ensembles, including the Beach Boys, Manhattan Transfer and Take Six, died March 25 in a Marin County hospital of complications from diabetes. He was 78.

Mr. Puerling, who lived in San Anselmo, was one of the great jazz and pop vocal arrangers who expanded the sound of harmony singing. The Hi-Lo's, a quartet formed in Los Angeles in 1953 with Mr. Puerling singing bass-baritone and writing the arrangements, became the most popular jazz-based vocal group of the period. They were heard widely on record, in concert and on TV shows hosted by Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Steve Allen and Nat Cole.

"Any vocal group that didn't listen to the Hi-Lo's was remiss," said jazz singer Jon Hendricks of the legendary vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks and Ross.

"Gene broadened the harmonies, like Bird did with bebop," said Hendricks, comparing Mr. Puerling to pioneering saxophonist Charlie Parker. "The sound of the Hi-Lo's was choral, even though there were only four of them. The way the chords were spread out, they sounded like a choir."

In late 1950s, when the Hi-Lo's were performing at Birdland in New York, Hendricks, Dave Lambert and Annie Ross would sit up front, soak up the sound and try to figure out who was singing lead. "Because the blend was so marvelous, we couldn't find the lead half the time," Hendricks recalled with a laugh.

Born in Milwaukee in 1929, Mr. Puerling took a few piano lessons but was a largely self-taught musician. A fan of vocal groups like Mel Torme's the Mel-Tones, the Modernaires and the Four Freshmen, Mr. Puerling formed a series of vocal groups in high school. One of them, the Shades, featured baritone Bob Strasen, who would become one of the original Hi-Lo's (with baritone Bob Morse and tenor Clark Burroughs, the latter replaced in 1959 by tenor Don Shelton).

Mr. Puerling worked as a Milwaukee disc jockey for a spell before moving to Los Angeles, where he sang on recordings by Les Baxter and Gordon Jenkins. With a push from bandleader and film composer Jerry Fielding, the Hi-Lo's began recording for the small Starlite label, performing Mr. Puerling's arrangements of standards like "She's Funny That Way" and "Have You Met Miss Jones?" Their breakthrough year was 1956, when the quartet became the house vocal group for the nationally televised Rosemary Clooney show and was signed to Columbia Records.

Over the next few years, the Hi-Lo's appeared on the tube with Sinatra, Benny Goodman and other stars, toured with Judy Garland, played major halls like Madison Square Garden and recorded commercial jingles for Hertz Rent a Car and other advertisers. After being dropped from Columbia, the group was signed to Sinatra's Reprise label in the early '60s, recording some of the folk songs and bossa nova numbers popular at the time. But with the advent of rock 'n' roll, the Hi-Lo's, like other older pop groups, went out of vogue, and split in 1964.

Mr. Puerling went to work in the Chicago studios writing and singing commercial jingles. Working with fellow singers Shelton, Len Dresslar and Bonnie Herman, Mr. Puerling began experimenting with the new multi-track recording technology to create a rich, layered choral sound by overdubbing the voices. Called The Singers Unlimited, the quartet made a recording of the Beatles' "The Fool on the Hill" that inspired pianist Oscar Peterson to recommend the group to his record label, MPS of Germany, which put out more than a dozen Singers Unlimited albums.

Mr. Puerling, who was nominated for 14 Grammys, won the award in 1982 for his arrangement of "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" for Manhattan Transfer. He also wrote arrangements for Chanticleer, Linda Ronstadt and other artists.

In the late 1970s, Mr. Puerling reunited the Hi-Lo's, with whom he recorded a couple of CDs and performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival and elsewhere around the country. In recent years, he taught workshops at the Marin-based Harmony Sweepstakes.

"As a craftsman of the art of blending and harmonizing the human voice in song, Gene has no equal," said Harmony Sweepstakes producer John Neal.

Mr. Puerling is survived by his wife, Helen.

IAJE's most challenging time...

The most challenging time in the Association’s history.

For nearly 40 years, IAJE has played an absolutely vital role in assuring the continued worldwide growth and development of jazz and jazz education. Although IAJE employs professional staff dedicated to carrying out our collective mission, it is you, our members, who have supported and shaped the organization into what it is today – the gathering point for the worldwide jazz community!

If you have ever attended the Annual International Conference, read a helpful article in the Jazz Education Journal, attended a Teacher Training Institute, received guidance or information from the expert Resource Team, or grown in any number of ways from making new contacts with IAJE’s diverse and dedicated membership, you know the value of IAJE firsthand. IAJE is a passionate and respected advocate for jazz in our society and jazz education in our schools. Quite simply, there is no association like it!

Unfortunately, IAJE presently finds itself facing significant challenges that threaten its ability to continue to meet its vital mission.
* IAJE’s Campaign for Jazz, envisioned over 5 years ago as a means of endowing IAJE’s programs and thus (ironically) assuring its fiscal stability, has not performed as hoped or expected. The initial investment necessary to launch the Campaign was quite significant and, while many have been quite generous with their pledges of support, the money has arrived much slower than anticipated or needed. In short, IAJE invested heavily in this campaign and has not come close to recouping its expenses, resulting in the accumulation of significant debt.
* The Toronto conference, while an incredible event (and the usual great “hang”), experienced very poor attendance – down by nearly 40% from previous years. Many factors beyond IAJE’s control influenced this: the high cost of airfares, the weakness of the American dollar, and new passport requirement for U.S. citizens. Nevertheless, this situation left us with an additional debilitating financial loss.

Given the cumulative and devastating effect of these setbacks, the Board has had to take a realistic look at our current financial position and has made the very difficult decision to temporarily suspend the following programmatic operations for the time being so that we may focus all of our attention on the health of this vital association. This will include the:

* Search for a new Executive Director
* Park City Jazz Summit in Park City, Utah
* All scholarship programs
* Production of the Jazz Education Journal

The IAJE website will continue to operate along with opportunities for members to access the Resource Team, online publications, and other member benefits. Current plans are to resume publication of the JEJ as early as the end of summer.

A Transition Team has been appointed by the Board to help guide IAJE through this difficult time. As an association that has seen phenomenal growth in both its membership and programming over the past 40 years, we have reached a point where significant changes have to be made. Therefore, we anticipate utilizing this as an opportunity to restructure the Association in ways that will not only ensure its future fiscal health but will position it to better meet the needs of our members. To facilitate this restructuring, we will, therefore, be postponing Executive Board elections until later this summer. Ultimately, we are confident that IAJE will emerge from this a much stronger, more vibrant association.

German Jazz Meeting

Darmstadt meets Bremen

Jazzinstitut will provide information on its activities at the jazzahead!-fair in Bremen. Exciting panels on jazz journalism, and German Jazz Meeting 2008.

For a long week-end, lasting from Thursday to Sunday, April 18th to 21st, Europe’s largest public archive on jazz presents its various activities at Bremen’s CongressCentrum. Together with the Klaus-Kuhnke-Archiv fuer populaere Musik, located at the Bremen University, the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt will provide information about its wide range of activities, from scholarly publications, jazz research services to exhibitions, conferences, workshops and jazz concerts.

We look forward to welcome you at our fair stand B10/B12 (right in front of the Borgward-Saal) in Bremen at jazzahead! (www.jazzahead.de), April 18 to 21, 2008.

One major project of the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt will be presented to the public at jazzahead!, too: For the second time, the German Jazz Meeting, a bi-annual showcase festival will present the richness and variety of the contemporary German jazz and improvisation scene to an international and national audience. As a showcase festival it focuses on the current creative German Jazz scene and will present 12 outstanding bands from this country (www.germanjazzmeeting.de).

German Jazz Meeting is a coopperation with Messe- und Austellungsgesellschaft Hansa GmbH, and is funded by the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the German Ministery for Foreign Affaires.

Also, we would like to recommend two further expert events during the jazzahead!-fair in Bremen. Two conference panels will discuss “Quality in Jazz Journalism” and “The Future of Jazz in Public Radio”, which are both held in English.

The Topics in a Nutshell:

Quality in Jazz Journalism
April 18th 2008, 04:30-05:30 pm, Salon Franzius

In principle, jazz criticism faces the same dilemma as music criticism dies in general: there is no professional training for this field. On top of that, jazz first had to assert itself against so-called serious music in the media because providing information on the musical genre jazz was long considered an alibi for a medium’s youthfulness. Furthermore, jazz criticism was often written by jazz enthusiasts who saw themselves as defenders of jazz or by journalists who were more interested in the spectacle than in artistic composition. The fact that jazz involves a lot of improvisations and that there are rarely musical scores to hand down does not make criticism any easier. But despite all these problems - How is it possible to pursue high-quality jazz journalism?

Moderation: Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Sandner (Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main / Journalist, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)

Speaker: Dieter Ilg (Musician), Stuart Nicholson (Journalist, UK), Jan Granlie (Journalist und Festival director, Norway)

Future of Jazz in Public Radio
April 19th 2008, 04:30-06:00 pm, Lloyd Saal

Jazz on the radio has always had a bad image: too late, too short, too little, or threatened by the next programme reform. These eternal sweeping statements are always true - or always false, for it is impossible to prove or disprove them. A discussion panel moderated by Michael Rüsenberg attempts to look beyond the German borders into various parts of Europe to gain an overview in a divided landscape. The discussion will be held in English.

Moderation: Michael Rüsenberg (WDR)
Speaker: Roland Spiegel (BR), Arne Schumacher (Radio Bremen), John Walters (The Guardian, London), Thomas P. Illes (SwissGroove), Co de Kloet (NPS Holland)

Portanto, assistir a Nelson Angelo hoje é programa obrigatório.

SXSW, All Roads Lead To Austin (Best of: Show 1)

While we're all still trying to catch up on sleep from last week's whirlwind South by Southwest trip, our friends and partners at Dig for Fire are still burning the proverbial candle at both ends. They've been culling through hours and hours of footage from our two day Lawn Party and putting together new Best of episodes for the SXSW, All Roads Lead to Austin series.
Best of: Show 1 just went live today and features set highlights and interviews from Yo La Tengo, Mika Miko, and Atlas Sound.
Check back over the weekend when we'll be premiering Best of: Show 2, with Jay Reatard, J. Mascis, Jeffrey Lewis, and Phosphorescent.
And if you missed any of the previous episodes of SXSW, All Roads Lead to Austin, just go to the Video Archive section of Other Music Digital, where you'll see more clips of the aforementioned artists as well as performances from Bodies of Water, These New Puritans, Times New Viking, Grand Archives, Portastatic and Shearwater.
We're really proud of how Dig for Fire captured the great, laid-back vibe of these two special days; all the films are truly stunning. We're so happy to share these amazing performances with you. Enjoy!

SUNDAY, APRIL 13 AT 7:00 PM
BERKLEE PERFORMANCE CENTER

Right Turn, a non-profit organization providing support for artists and entertainers recovering from addiction and mental health issues, will present their first annual Rock & Roll SUPERGROUP Benefit Concert starring the legendary CHUCK BERRY on Sunday, April 13th at 7:00 p.m. at Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Tickets at $250 [Gold Circle Sponsor Seating, limited quantity available], $150, $75, $50, and $35 are on sale now at: www.ticketmaster.com, www.berkleebpc.com, the Berklee Performance Center box office, all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling: 617/508-931-2000. For more information, call: 617-747-2261.

Chuck Berry, the 81-year-old Father of Rock & Roll, famous for hits such as “Johnny B. Goode”, "Maybellene," “Roll Over, Beethoven!” and "Memphis”, will come to Boston to headline the show. He will perform with members of the SUPERGROUP, a group of rockers together on stage for the first time just for this special concert event. The SUPERGROUP includes keyboardist Chuck Leavell and saxophonist Tim Ries of The Rolling Stones, drummer Simon Kirke of Bad Company, drummer Chad Smith of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, bassist John Conte of Crown Jewels, guitarist Ricky Byrd, formerly of Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, guitarist Barry Goudreau, formerly of Boston, guitarist Marc Orrell, formerly of The Dropkick Murphys, and guitarist and vocalist Kate Taylor. Ernie and The Automatics will open the show and there will be surprise guests making an appearance to show their support for Right Turn.

“These are world class musicians coming together to raise money for addiction treatment – it is going to be a fantastic show” said Woody Giessmann, addiction specialist and founder and CEO of the Arlington-based Right Turn. “Right Turn fills a need in our community for recovery programs that target artists and entertainers. Our program is unique because we can reach out to creative people and give them individual support.”

Members of the SUPERGROUP will perform together at this concert to support a cause close to their hearts. Drummer Simon Kirke lost friend and Free band mate Paul Kossoff to drug induced heart failure in 1976. Drummer Chad Smith joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the wake of former member Hillel Slovak’s drug overdose in 1988, and observed band mate Anthony Kiedis’ battle with addiction throughout their careers together.

About Right Turn
Based in Arlington, MA, Right Turn was founded in 2003 by Woody Giessmann, the drummer for the rock band The Del Fuegos, after he lost several friends to drug and alcohol use. Right Turn's mission is to provide substance abuse and mental health treatment to artists, entertainers, their families, and anyone who would benefit from hope, health, and creativity on the road to recovery. For more information, call 781-646-3800 or visit www.right-turn.org.
