Dom Um Romão
"Rhythm Traveller"
Reviewed by Paul Bradshaw
I've been waiting for this set since Dom Um played the Jazz Cafe in London and I'm not disappointed. The wiry, bird-like man striking a macho pose on the back of this album delivers the kind of set we were all waiting for.
The master percussionist drops skills from the off with "Sinistro", which opens and closes "Rhythm Traveller," and sets the tone for an album that ranges far and wide. To subtle metronomic shifts they effotlessly conjure jazz à la Rio.
Fabio Fonseca provides the supple funky keys and Nelson Angelo's warm presence on guitar and vocals is felt throughout. As Dom Um revisits "Ginga Gingou" you are instantly drawn by the rhythm of the berimbau and the roda, the pull of the capoeira. "Theme for Nahn" rocks the spot while "Mysterious Traveller" is reminiscent of Miles.
Respect to producer Arnaldo DeSouteiro for having the vision and the faith to make this rounded, uplifting, vibrant album a reality. (PB)
