Legendary Chicago Saxophonist Franz Jackson Dies at Age 95

Few jazz musicians in the 21st Century can claim to have known the two key inventors of the music: trumpeter Louis Armstrong and composer-pianist Jelly Roll Morton.

Franz Jackson, a legendary Chicago saxophonist who performed past his 95th birthday, worked with Armstrong, socialized with Morton and collaborated with Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Fletcher Henderson and other swing-era icons.

As a virtuoso saxophonist, brilliant clarinetist and evocative vocalist, Mr. Jackson was a mainstay in Chicago jazz clubs and concert halls dating back to the Roaring '20s (except for a period in the late 1930s and '40s, when he lived in New York and Sweden).

Mr. Jackson, 95, died of natural causes early Tuesday, May 6, in Riveridge Manor, a nursing home in Niles, Mich., said his daughter, Michelle Jewell. He had suffered a hip fracture in April, she said. Though listeners marveled at Mr. Jackson's ability to play so well for so long -- he performed for more than two hours straight at a 95th birthday celebration last November -- it was the particular nature of his sound that always commanded attention.

"When I think of Franz, I just think of a big, powerful saxophone," said Eric Schneider, a Chicago tenor player who frequently performed with Mr. Jackson. "He reminded me of Coleman Hawkins," added Schneider, referring to a seminal tenor saxophonist of a more romantic era. "But he had his own thing too."

Indeed, if Mr. Jackson embraced the larger-than-life sound that was the hallmark of swing giants Hawkins and Ben Webster, he also incorporated elements of the more ethereal sounding tenorist Lester Young.

At the core of Mr. Jackson's music, though, was a deep well of soulful expression, conveyed in poetically stated melodies and touched-by-the-blues phrasings. "He was the real thing -- the authenticity of his playing" distinguished him, said Art Hoyle, a noted Chicago trumpeter who often partnered with Mr. Jackson. "He was virtually there when the music was in its infancy. When you talked to him, you were talking to history."

Mr. Jackson was born Nov. 1, 1912, in Rock Island, Ill., and came to Chicago with his mother when he was 13. He quickly began teaching himself to play reed instruments and at 16 was working with a pioneer of boogie-woogie piano, Albert Ammons. By the early 1930s, Mr. Jackson was playing for bandleader-composer Henderson -- widely considered the architect of big-band swing -- and learning to write scores from him.

"That was a great time to be with Fletcher, too, because he was doing a lot of [arranging] work for Benny Goodman's band at the time," Mr. Jackson said in a 1992 Tribune interview. "Basically, he was taking his great old charts and rewriting them for the Goodman band."

Mr. Jackson's education continued apace, for by performing with Armstrong, trumpeter Roy Eldridge and other innovators based in Chicago, Mr. Jackson absorbed the language of early jazz as it was being created and refined. He moved to New York with his first wife, Maxine Johnson, in the late 1930s, but he found the jazz scene there cliquish. Even so, in Manhattan he befriended the virtually out-of-work Morton, in the waning days of the great composer's life.

By 1950, Mr. Jackson returned to Chicago, leading his Original Jass All-Stars for years at the Red Arrow club in Stickney. Although many musicians of his vintage rejected the bebop innovations that supplanted swing, Mr. Jackson absorbed them into his own, remarkably malleable work. "A lot of guys didn't like it when bebop came along, but I liked it fine," Mr. Jackson said in the Tribune interview. "I could understand it because I knew the bebop guys like Dizzy [Gillespie] before they became famous; I played with them."

Even into his 90s, Mr. Jackson remained a strikingly charismatic figure, singing vintage tunes such as "St. James Infirmary" and "Limehouse Blues" with a vocal grit and a declamatory style rarely encountered anymore. In a marathon concert with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble three years ago in Chicago, he held his own against tenor monsters such as Johnny Griffin, Von Freeman and Ira Sullivan.

"He did exactly what he loved his entire life, he made a living at it, he raised his family on it," said his daughter. On May 15, Mr. Jackson -- who lived in Chicago and Dowagiac, Mich. -- will posthumously receive the 2008 Theodore Thomas History Maker Award for Distinction in the Performing Arts from the Chicago History Museum.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Jackson is survived by a son, Robert; five grandchildren; and a step-grandchild. A memorial service will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. May 24 in the Apostolic Lighthouse Church in Dowagiac, Mich.

Funeral for Milt Hinton's Widow set for Friday, May 9

Mona Clayton Hinton (1919-2008)

Edmonia - Mona - Clayton Hinton, the widow of noted jazz musician and documentarian Milt Hinton (1910-2000), died on May 3, 2008, at North Shore Hospital after a long illness. She was living at the Hinton family residence on Milt Hinton Place in the Queens section of New York City.

The Hintons first met at Milt's grandmother's funeral in 1939 and were inseparable for the next 61 years. Mona traveled extensively with Milt throughout his career. She was the only spouse on the road with the Cab Calloway Orchestra in the 1940s, where, according to Milt, she was extremely helpful in finding rooms and meals for band members especially when the band worked in small towns during the Jim Crow era. During the '50s and '60s when Milt was working day and night in the New York studios, Mona kept the books and made often complicated transportation arrangements. And during the last two decades of his life, Milt and Mona got to travel to jazz festivals and clinics around the world - first class.

In 1958, at her husband's request, Mona took the celebrated home movie footage (the only movie in existence) of the Esquire Magazine photo shoot on a Harlem brownstone stoop that was memorialized in Jean Bach's film, A Great Day in Harlem.

Mrs. Hinton was born in Centralia, IL, in 1919. She was the sixth of eight children; and at the time of her birth, her family, like many others who were part of the Great Migration, was moving from Mississippi to Ohio. After completing high school in Sandusky, OH, she moved to Chicago and attended Poro College, a cosmetology school run by early African American entrepreneur, Madam Annie Malone. Although Mrs. Hinton graduated, she realized her true talents were in bookkeeping, not hair dressing, and she remained in Chicago as an assistant to Madam Malone.

Mrs. Hinton returned to school in the 70s earning bachelor and masters degrees at Queens College of the City University of New York. She taught at several Queens elementary schools, but gave up full-time work to accompany her husband in his travels

The Hintons were active in many community organizations including the St. Albans Congregational Church and both received numerous awards and honors.

Mrs. Hinton is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Hinton-Morgan; a granddaughter Inez Mona Morgan; a great grandson Kamyron William Morgan, all of Atlanta; her sister Mary Louise Bellamy of Sandusky, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends around the world.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hinton will be held Friday, May 9, at 10 am at the St. Albans Congregational Church, 172-17 Linden Boulevard in Jamaica, Queens (www.stalbanscc.org). The viewing is from 9 - 10 am.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to The Jazz Foundation of America or the American Cancer Society.

Clark Terry in KU Medical Center

Clark Terry, who missed a concert Sunday with the Kansas City Youth Jazz Band, is in serious condition in the KU Medical Center's cardiac intensive care unit.

Terry, 87, entered the hospital last Friday evening. On Monday, a few of his Kansas City friends were at his bedside. Terry was smiling and joking."His spirits were up," said Kansas City jazz singer Angela Hagenbach, according to the "Kansas City Star".

Terry's career as a trumpeter, band leader, teacher and singer has spanned more than 60 years.

Brazil was one of the main musical nations of the 20th century and Milton Nascimento one of its most original composers. This child of the Minais Gerais has blended the genres, refusing to be put into any specific category, inventing instead a universe of countless, diverse references. Born on a “continent country”, with Latin, African and European cultures, Milton Nascimento invented a world of music where the elements commonly associated with the sounds of Brazil, like Samba, Toadas and Bossa Nova, all come together.

He has never favored one style over another, and in each album he successively found inspiration in popular American music, in the Beatles’ pop, in jazz, in folk music from the Amazon, in liturgical hymns and in the work of a fellow countryman, the great composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. He isn’t one to let himself be categorized into any one style, and, while he has described how the voice of Ray Charles had moved him profoundly as a teenager, he loves Edith Piaf just as much (as illustrated in one of his latest albums), and also Doris Day and Sarah Vaughan, and he sings a sentimental tune or subversive lyrics with the same fervor.

We have been big fans of Victoria Bergsman since her days with the Concretes, and when she left that band, and then turned up on Peter Bjorn & John's breakout single "Young Folks," you had to wonder what was in store next for this shy Swedish chanteuse. Open Field by Taken By Trees, Victoria's stellar solo debut (disguised as a new "band" project, and produced by Bjorn Vittling), fulfilled all the promise of this talented artist, and when we heard that she was going to be in New York on a rare U.S. tour, we insisted that the band come by to play some songs. Honestly, I had a pit in my stomach throughout this entire performance. Victoria is notoriously reluctant to take the stage, and in the close quarters of the store, her squeamishness was palpable. Add to that her soon-to-be-legendary admission in our interview that she does not like humans, and I just wasn't sure WHAT we had. You can take a look and decide for yourself, but in the end I think we have a stellar performance and revealing interview with a talented and iconoclastic artist. We hope you agree.

4th Annual New Languages Festival

The Fourth Annual New Languages Festival will take place from June 12th to 14th at the Living Theatre on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The generation of jazz musicians that grew up in the wake of neoclassicism has come into its own, and extraordinary things are afoot. Their voices are as diverse as the milieu they came up in, but together they confirm that jazz will continue to spawn new musical languages in the 21st century.

For the past four years, the New Languages festival has celebrated the most distinct voices of the next generation. It has featured groups led by Amir ElSaffar, Jonathan Finlayson, Brandon Ross, Judith Berkson, Dan Weiss, Mat Maneri, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Mark Taylor, Nate Wooley, Eivind Opsvik, Jacob Sacks, Taylor Ho Bynum, and many others.

This year's festival is currently slated to include Tyshawn Sorey, Miles Okazaki, Tony Malaby, Darcy James Argue, and Chris Speed, among others. These ambtious and brilliant bandleaders are certain throw the future into sharp relief.

Live at Other Music: Toumani Diabate (Episode #9)

We try to keep mixing things up with our ongoing Live at Other Music series, featuring a broad selection of our favorite artists from a variety of genres, performing and chatting about their music and their inspirations, reflecting varied musical passions for the artists as well as all of us at Other Music. As such, we've seen a variety of different approaches to making music and how these artists fit into the broader community.

Still, when we're lucky enough to host a musician with the singular vision and dedication of Malian griot and kora prodigy Toumani Diabate, it makes us all take pause. Diabate traces his musical heritage back 70 generations. His instrument, the kora, is more than 700 years old and is an integral part of his traditional culture, and this history is central to Diabate's music and his life. He is both a musician and a teacher, a traditionalist as well as an innovator. And while many in our circle may have first taken notice of Diabate from his recent appearance on Bjork's Volta album, or know his name from his Grammy-winning recordings with Ali Farka Toure, despite many high-profile and innovative collaborations, Diabate sees his primary mission as an educator and champion of traditional Malian culture.

It was an honor to have him play for us at Other Music, and even more so to sit with Diabate and learn. The first film is centered around our interview with Diabate and is interspersed with highlights from his set. We've also included a second clip which features a full song performance. Both segments are truly stunning, we hope you enjoy.

Barbara Dennerlein in May

Concert activities

Next month Barbara Dennerlein will stay in Germany and perform in the northwest region. One of the concert venues will be the Jazz Days in Hilden, which will feature "Women in Jazz". In June, Barbara will start her first concert trip to North America that will lead her to the International Jazz Festival in Rochester, NY. Four concerts are scheduled there. And in beginning July she will continue her pipe organ concert series with a concert in New York's Trinity Church in Wall Street.

Later on in July and August, Barbara will focus on Europe. With "Freedom for the organ pipes" the German Embassy and the German Institute for Culture/Goethe Institute in Tallin entitle their announcement of Barbara's concert trip to Estonia. Barbara will perform on pipe organs at the Concert Halls of Tallin and Pärnu, accompanied by saxophonist Villu Veski.

Off stage

Barbara Dennerlein is already preparing for the next international concerts. "There is a lot to do if you try to combine the many requests I get. Before too long I can see myself playing, organizing concerts and travelling at the same time" she laughs. But managing herself is not the only thing Barbara is occupied with.

Spiritual Movement No. 2

Six years ago Barbara's first church organ CD "Spiritual Movement No. 1" has been released and the title promised that there would be a successor some day. Now Barbara is already working on the next CD album, Spiritual Movement No. 2!

After this period Barbara is still fascinated by the variety of these instruments. Each one seems to have its individual personality, and it's a musician's task to intensively explore the organ's characteristics. "While Hammond organ concerts only need a more or less quick sound check and some arrangements with the sidemen, a church organ concert requires preparation that easily exceeds the duration of the concert itself by far. You have to detect the technical and musical abilities of the instrument within short time, to select the best suited compositions and you have to define and preset the registrations as frameworks for the intended interpretations." This is and will always be a new challenge for Barbara Dennerlein.

The fun continues the next morning with a walk with guitarist/singer Joyce Cooling and her team, Music for the Mind, at Lake Lily in Maitland, FL.

Branford Marsalis Quartet -- Having kept together this working group for so long stands as a major career achievement for Marsalis. And why wouldn’t he keep playing with Jeff “Tain” Watts, Joey Calderazzo and Eric Revis? After all, this group produces some of the most exciting jazz on the planet, from its adventurous albums such as Braggtown to its scintillating live shows.

FEATURES
Lizz Wright -- In only three albums, the vocalist has traveled down quite the diverse artistic path. For her third album, The Orchard, Wright has gone down a more “country” route, as opposed to her earlier forays into neo soul. The result is perhaps her most personal, resonant album yet.

David “Honeyboy” Edwards -- When our writer sat down to play some guitar with the 92-year-old Delta blues guitar legend, he did more than trade licks. He traded stories with Honeyboy about his long career, including the early intersection between jazz and the blues.

Ithamara Koorax wurde als Kind europäischer Einwanderer in Rio de Janeiro geboren. Schon bald stellte sich ihr musikalisches Talent heraus. Im zarten Alter von 5 Jahren spielte sie bereits Klavier und sang wunderschöne Lieder. Mit 17 hatte sie erste Gelegenheiten, mit Musik ihr eigenes Geld zu verdienen. Sie sang sich durch Jingles, Radio- und Fernsehwerbungen und als backing vocal in verschiedenen Bands. Bald wurde aus dem Geheimtipp eine gesuchte Sängerin in den Aufnahmestudios rund um Rio de Janeiro. Als wichtigste Einflüsse nennt Ithamara Musikerinnen wie Ella Fitzgerald, Elis Regina, Carmen McRae, Shirley Horn oder Elizeth Cardoso. Mit ihrer ersten Soloaufnahme "Illuminada" katapultierte sie sich in den brasilianischen Platin-Himmel. "Illuminada" war denn auch der Soundtrack für eine sogenannte "Telenovela", und in Brasilien gibts, so sagt man, praktisch nichts Wichtigeres als Telenovelas. Und wenn man da mal drin ist, so ist man berühmt, und so erging es auch Ithamara. Auftritte mit Hermeto Pascoal, Azymuth und vielen brasilianischen Stars wurden zur Tagesordnung. Es folgten weitere Hitparadenplätze mit neuen Telenovelas-Songs. Und auch in Japan wurde sie entdeckt. Dort eroberte sie das Land im Sturm und wurde zu einer der besten Jazzsängerinnen erkoren. Plattenaufnahmen mit Grössen wie Art Farmer, Jack deJohnette, Ron Carter oder Dom Um Romão kamen hinzu. Ihr hervorragendes letztes Album "Love Dance" ist ein überwältigender Erfolg und wurde beim "Down Beat Reader's Poll" zum fünftbesten Album gewählt. Selbst nüchterne Kritiker überbieten sich mit Superlativen, man spricht von "zarter Intimität, heisser Leidenschaft, magischer Musik". Da hat die Münchner Combo "Bossa Five" um den Saxophonisten Florian Riedl wirklich allen Grund sich mächtig ins Zeug zu legen, spieltechnisch auf hohem Niveau wird dieser Abend sicher ein Highlight für Freunde des Bossa und Brazil Jazz.
