Pittsfield CityJazz review
The Webshire Eagle's review of Pittsfield CityJazz is entitled: "Festival honors rich diversity".
The author wrote about Barbara's church organ & Hammond concert at the First Baptist Church:
"Barbara Dennerlein, the German organist, concluded her first tour of this country with Sunday's performance. The Program's Title: "Organic Jazz: The Two Faces of Barbara Dennerlein," had nothing to do with schizophrenic tendencies or personality disorders, but rather her dual assignments on pipe organ and the Hammond B-3; she offered a set on each in a long day's journey that led into night.
Dennerlein's music for the pipe organ, a selection of titles from her own pen, "Unforgettable" and "Waltzing Pipes" contained some intriguing riffs and a lot of bombast — nearly every cadence offered its explosion, as a pipe organ is qualified to do. Her paean to our big city, "New York Impressions," cultivated the statuesque New York, and, perhaps some of the tumult that engulfed the city on Sept. 11, 2001. Clearly, it is a city she admires, and with which she empathizes.
Jazz, for all its raucous reputation, really has a very delicate center, and the Hammond B-3 instrument, with its less clangorous timbre, seems better suited as a solo instrument for many of the intricacies in the genre. She offered a pleasant experience in a piece she calls "A Summer Day" and some whimsical colorations on "Frog Dance," a piece she said was inspired by an object acquired at a flea market. "Black and White" seemed to involve only the black keys, but it was a dazzling performance.
Helpfully, the Guild of Organists provided Dennerlein's performance with video projectors and large twin screens, which were suspended high above the altar, the left screen displaying her hands and the keys, the right, the pedals, in each case. This was especially useful, not only in putting everyone on that so desirable "keyboard side" of the recital, but also in explaining to the uninitiated something about how music is made on an organ.
Dennerlein offered an active array of seemingly genial patter between numbers, however the microphone, her German accent and a tendency to giggle and mumble all conspired to make much of it unintelligible. Still, it was good to welcome the organ as a fresh voice in the world of jazz. Hats off to the Organ Guild, and to Pittsfield CityJazz for pushing the envelope a bit."
Concerts in November
Barbara Dennerlein will stay in Germany most of the time in November. Except two venues in Switzerland all other concerts - mostly Hammond concerts - will take her to several German cities.
Barbara is quite familiar with the Dresden Jazz Days, where she has performed regularly since fourteen years. Here she will meet with other organists during a Hammond Summit.
In Cologne at the "Altes Pfandhaus" Barbara will meet Chico Freeman for the third time this year. The concert is part of Barbara's "Artist in Residence" commendation.
You will find the complete tour list below.
