June 23: pianist/vocalist Aimee Nolte w/ Hideaki Tokunaga gt $25
Aimee and Hideaki will share songs from Aimee's most recent album, "Up Til Now", varying from gentle ballads to swinging tunes you’d swear were standards, to a soaring, montuno-driven bossa nova, that traverse the ups and downs of her own romantic life—wistful meditation on long ago loves, the bitter pains of betrayal, peace in commitment, and the simple joys and fears of raising kids (she has four!).
Aimee will play standards you love, too—but she may not play them in the standard fashion: she keeps things fresh, and is constantly rethinking tunes to reveal the unexpected. You might also be pleasantly surprised to hear original takes on tunes not traditionally played in a jazz joint: a haunting version of Bonnie Raitt’s Dimming of the Day, for example, or one of the most heartrending interpretation of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” (which Mark Murphy recently recorded on his sublime "Love Is What Stays" album) you’re ever likely to hear.
Aimee and Hideaki often play with a trio— and regularly with Tony Dumas at “Bobby London” in Korea Town—and there’s no doubt that she can bring down the house in that setting. But for Aimee, music is often a chance to express the intimate, maybe even the secret parts of her soul—and the duo setting may be the perfect way to get to know her: which is well worth doing.
