The 30th Annual Jazz Station Poll - The Best Jazz of 2008!

Os melhores do jazz em 2008 - The Best Jazz of 2008!

The 30th Annual Jazz Station Poll results by Brazil-born jazz historian & jazz educator Arnaldo DeSouteiro

(Chick Corea at the 2008 Montreux Jazz Festival, performing with RTF)

R.I.P.: Freddie Hubbard

Just got the sad news from my dear friend Doug Payne. I can't believe. I'm devastated. I'll miss Freddie Hubbard forever.
Yesterday I listened twice to the CD reissue of "The Love Connection", which, in fact, I have been listening to obsessively for the past month, along with other Hubbard albums I had been posting here during all this month.
Recently I found out that "The Love Connection", magnificently arranged (& co-produced!) by Claus Ogerman, was the one who represented Freddie Hubbard in the "peak of the peak" of his form, at the height of his powers, even more than any of his CTI dates that I adore. It's passionate + technically impeccable playing from the first to the last note.

He was my favorite trumpeter. I always considered Miles Davis more "important", because of his revolutionary spirit, something that I've always admired. But Hubbard was MY personal favorite. The first one I began to collect when I was 9 or 10, and my passion for CTI began. The first LP I bought on which he was featured was Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar", with liner notes by Ira Gitler. Two days later I found Milt Jackson's "Sunflower", whose intro of the opening track, "For Someone I Love," I used to listen each and every midnight as the theme of the "TAP Pelos Caminhos do Mundo" program on the JB-AM radio in Rio.

Then I got Hubbard's own Grammy-winning "First Light" (with Airto Moreira on percussion), followed by "Sky Dive," "Polar AC," (both also featuring Airto) "Red Clay" (his CTI debut) and "Keep Your Soul Together". Many years later, thanks to Doug, I also got the original vinyl pressings of the two "Hubbard/Turrentine In Concert" volumes, as well as of the compilation "The Baddest Hubbard".

It was a dream come true when I produced him in studio for a track for the Roberto Avila album in 1989.
http://jazzstation-oblogdearnaldodesouteiros.blogspot.com/2007/08/freddie-hubbard.html

Later on, I had the chance to include Hubbard's tracks in compilations I produced (most notably the best-selling "CTI Acid Jazz Grooves" in 1997) and I supervised some of his CTI reissues for the Asian market. I regret the fact that his eagerly awaited "comeback album for CTI", which started to be recorded in '97 with arrangements by German pianist Jurgen Friedrich, was never completed, although JazzTimes magazine devoted a cover story to it. The track selected to be the first single was a jazzy version of James Horner's "My Heart Will Go On", the love theme from the "Titanic" movie.

Besides "The Love Connection" and all his CTI sessions as a leader, as a sideman (with Milt Jackson, Kenny Burrell, Don Sebesky, George Benson, Randy Weston and Stanley Turrentine) and and as a member of the CTI All Stars, I strongly recommend Hubbard's albums with Woody Shaw (when he re-signed with the ressurrected Blue Note label), the superb live dates with the VSOP Quintet (specially "Live Under The Sky" and "Tempest in the Colosseum"), and a haunting track ("Portrait of Jenny", backed only by Dorothy Ashby's harp and David Garfield's celeste) from "Bundle of Joy", one of his many controversial albums for Columbia, the label for which he also cut the excellent "Super Blue" (reissued on CD inaugurating the Mosaic Contemporary label), the explosive live date "Gleam" released only in Japan (including a great version of Stevie Wonder's "Too High") and many studio dates like "Liquid Love", which featured Brazilian percussionist Mayuto Correa. Another renowned Brazilian musician, Paulinho da Costa, played congas on "Bundle of Joy," whose title track sounds like the perfect freeway soundtrack while driving from West Hollywood to Venice Beach. And Hubbard guested on Raul de Souza's best-selling album ever, "Sweet Lucy," (Capitol) for which he also wrote the liner notes.

From his early years, besides several good-to-very good albums as a leader for Blue Note and Atlantic, the highlights are the appearances as sideman on Oliver Nelson's "Blues and the Abstract Truth" and John Coltrane's "Africa-Brass" (both produced by Creed Taylor, originally released on the Impulse! label and reissued in the 90s on CTI), as well as the historic Ornette Coleman's "Free Jazz" (Atlantic). Not to mention two other Taylor-produced Quincy Jones sessions, "Walking in Space" and "Gula Matari", both from the A&M/CTI era.

Last June 2008, Hubbard was the cover story of DownBeat magazine, in an article about his 70th birthday and the making of his last album, "On The Real Side" (Hip Bop), done with the big help of fellow trumpeter David Weiss.

A "new" Freddie Hubbard DVD, titled "One Of A Kind", is scheduled for release by the View Video company in the USA on January 20, 2009.
The DVDs filmed live at the Village Vanguard (previously released on LaserDisc) and at the Varsaw Jazz Festival are still available. Two other LaserDiscs, "Freddie Hubbard Live at the Blue Note" and "Wolf Trap Salues Dizzy Gillespie - An All-Star Tribute to the Jazz Master" (on which Hubbard performs humiliating solos on "Tanga" and "Tour de Force") are still awaiting a DVD reissue. I also recommend the DVD "The Chosen One / DownBeat 1975 & 1976 Readers Poll Winners", on which, among other numbers, Hubbard plays a furious version of "Straight Life".
I hope that someday some Japanese label could release the videos broadcasted by NHK TV from his performances with the VSOP and CTI All Stars supergroups, as well as his concerts as a leader in the Aurex and Live Under The Sky Festivals.

"Freddie Hubbard had the most incandescent spirit of almost any musician I ever had the opportunity to play with. He struck serious fear in those of us who thought we were ready to play with him. All of us who played with Freddie, like Billy Childs, Kenny Garrett, Carl Allen and Benny Green, among many, many others, we were taught to play hard, with fire, with intelligence, to leave NO question as to who you were as a musician. I will carry his memory with me for the rest of my life." - Christian McBride

"Freddie Hubbard was, I believe, the greatest jazz trumpet stylists of my generation. His influence is still being felt in the sound of many young trumpeters today. His warm tone and formidable technique will be considered marvels well into the future.Personally, I was so fortunate in that Freddie played on my very first album as a leader "Takin' Off". He was exactly the person I wanted and his contribution was groundbreaking. On a tune called "One Finger Snap" on a subsequent album of mine, his beginning improvised solo line worked so seamlessly that it became a kind of generic "melody" that most musicians still believe was the composed melody, when in fact it was not.
He and I crossed paths musically in several albums. In the group VSOP he was a founding member who's artistry helped propel that project, which began as a one time tour, to a decade of memorable musical inspirational moments for me.His legacy is secure in that he played a seminal role of the shaping of the evolution of America's foremost contribution to the musical arts, jazz." - Herbie Hancock

CD of the Day - "Freddie Hubbard: The Love Connection"

CD of the Day
Freddie Hubbard: "The Love Connection" (Sony) 2008

Produced by Freddie Hubbard & Claus Ogerman.
All Arrangements (Rhythm, Brass & Strings) by Claus Ogerman, who also conducted the orchestra in all tracks.
Executive Producer: Dr. George Butler
Featuring: Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Chuck Domanico, Chester Thompson, Rubens Bassini, Jumma Santos, Joe Farrell, Al Jarreau, Chuck Findley, Oscar Brashear, Snooky Young, Steve Madaio, Tom Scott, Dick Hyde, Phil Ranelin, Phil Teele, Ernie Watts, Guy Lumia et al.

Ogerman considers his score for the closing track, "Lazy Afternoon," his personal favorite arrangement ever! Curiously, but not surprisingly, since he adores that haunting Jerome Moss melody, recently Ogerman recorded a new arrangement of the tune on his album with Danilo Perez, "Across The Crystal Sea," featuring Cassandra Wilson on an impeccable vocal performance. This track is nominated for a Grammy in the "Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist".
But all the tracks on "The Love Connection" are outstanding, starting by the exciting title tune on which Claus shows his underrated skills as brass arranger (skills that were overshadowed only because of his genius as a string orchestrator; or, like Freddie himself wrote in the back cover, as "the greatest string composer of the century.") There are great solos by Freddie on trumpet and Chick Corea on MiniMoog, propelled by Stanley Clarke on electric bass, Chester Thompson (then a member of Genesis) on drums, and the late Rubens Bassini on congas & tambourine.
"Brigitte", dedicated to his wife, pictured with him in the album cover, had been previously recorded on the CTI LP "Keep Your Soul Together". But this orchestral is far superior, also thanks to Corea's solo on the acoustic piano and the late Chuck Domanico's pulse on the acoustic bass.
Then comes another wondrous orchestration, featuring French horns and strings: Claus' own composition "This Dream". A dream made in heaven, indeed. Hubbard's tone on the flugelhorn is simply glorious and astonishing, making the highly difficult melodic line sound apparently very simple. Maybe his greatest flugel performance ever.
"Little Sunflower" got a lot of airplay in the USA jazz radio stations at the time of the original release in 1979, mostly due to the presence of Al Jarreau, then at the height of his popularity. Al added beautiful lyrics to one of Hubbard's most famous tunes, previously recorded as "Sunflower" on a marvelous self-titled LP recorded by Milt Jackson (with Hubbard as guest soloist) for CTI in 1972, arranged by Don Sebesky, who is also nominated for a Grammy in the same category on which Ogerman was nominated. Both Corea and Bassini shine once again, but Jarreau doesn't scats. And Hubbard sounds superb on the flugel one more time.
Now, if you really love music, order this Japanese CD reissue right now (it was never reissued domestically in the USA, unfortunately).

Jazz Talk: Jews, Blacks and Jazz

Jazz at Lincoln Center continues its 2008-09 Jazz Talk series with Jazz Talk: Jews, Blacks & Jazz. Many commentators, both black and white, have noted a special relationship between Jews and blacks. The first CD reissue ever of Pat Thomas' first album for the MGM label (the CD came out in Japan, of course...), "Desafinado," recorded in 1963, was devoted to "exciting bossa nova stylings", like its subtitle says. It means it includes the first bossa tunes to become hits in the USA, such as the two Luiz Bonfá tunes for the "Black Orpheus" soundtrack: "Manhã de Carnival" (retitled "Carnival" with a strange set of English lyrics that I had never heard before; and no one takes the credit for this mess...) and "Samba de Orfeu", heard in a wordless version, as also happens to Djalma Ferreira's "Recado" (mistitled "Ricardo Bossa Nova" and with the name of his partner Luis Antonio nowhere to be found).
For music historians, it will be a delight to listen to the original English lyrics written by Jon Hendricks for "Desafinado" ("Slightly Out of Tune") and "One Note Samba". Both would be later unauthorized by Jobim.
There also the seldom heard English lyrics to Ary Barroso's "Bahia" (registered in the USA as "Baia") and "É Luxo Só" ("Soft Nights"). Lalo prepared unhinged bossa scores to the French classics "C'est Si Bon" and "Que reste-t-il de nos amours? ("I Wish You Love"), achieving better results in two songs by Margo Guryan: "Could Be" (co-written by the genius Gary McFarland) and "To Welcome The Day".
The late Brazilian singer Carmen Costa, by then living in the USA, appears on percussion, alongside her husband at that time, José Paulo.

Page Cavanaugh dies at 86; pianist-singer led Southland jazz trio
By Dennis McLellan - LA Times
December 24, 2008

Page Cavanaugh, a veteran pianist-singer whose trio was a popular nightclub and recording group in the late 1940s and '50s and who became one of Southern California's most enduring lounge jazz artists, has died. He was 86. Cavanaugh, who also was a composer and arranger during his more than 60-year career, died Friday morning of kidney failure at a skilled nursing facility in Granada Hills, said Phil Mallory, Cavanaugh's bass player for 18 years.

During the early days with his trio, Cavanaugh appeared with Frank Sinatra at the Waldorf-Astoria and elsewhere, played for NBC Radio's "The Jack Paar Show" and appeared in movies such as "A Song Is Born," "Romance on the High Seas," "Big City" and "Lullaby of Broadway."

"He was always a creatively fascinating artist throughout his long career," music critic Don Heckman told The Times. "What he did with his most famous group in the '40s and '50s was to develop a new style, in which all three members of the group would sing in unison in a whisper fashion."

It was a time, Heckman said, "when jazz and popular music were in much closer sync than they are today, so that groups like Nat Cole and George Shearing and Page Cavanaugh could play with a distinctly jazz flavor and still reach large audiences and sell a lot of records."

The Page Cavanaugh Trio, which placed in Top 10 polls in Down Beat and Metronome magazines from 1946 to the early '50s, had chart hits such as "The Three Bears" and "She Had to Go and Lose It At the Astor." Cavanaugh, whose trio also performed at clubs such as Ciro's and the Trocadero in the '40s, had his share of long-run gigs, including regular stints at the Captain's Table on La Cienega Boulevard in the early '50s and at the Money Tree in Toluca Lake in the '80s and '90s.

In the early '60s, he formed a seven-piece group, The Page 7, that recorded for RCA and appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and other TV programs. Around the same time, he opened his own club in Studio City.

But Cavanaugh, who performed solo in Las Vegas for a number of years in the '80s, had his share of career ups and downs. "At the end of the '50s, when rock 'n' roll came in, prices went down, and you couldn't get arrested," he said in a 1992 interview with The Times. "I'd end up playing in bowling alleys. It was a bad time."

Still, he said, "a life in music was a good choice for me. It's been a damn roller coaster, flying high one day, poor as Job's turkey the next. But I can't think of anything I'd trade it for."

Walter Page Cavanaugh was born Jan. 26, 1922, in Cherokee, Kan., and grew up on his family's farm. Both of his parents played ragtime piano, and he switched from his first instrument -- ukulele -- to piano when he was about 9. He later won high school solo piano competitions four years in a row and earned a scholarship to Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kan. But he stayed less than a semester and joined a Kansas-based band.

At age 20, he moved to Los Angeles and joined the Bobby Sherwood band, with whom he toured until he was drafted during World War II. While serving in the Army Signal Corps, he joined the Three Sergeants, a trio with Al Viola on guitar and Lloyd Pratt on bass, which played for officers' club dances and other functions. After the war, they became known as the Page Cavanaugh Trio.

The latest edition of the Page Cavanaugh Trio -- featuring Mallory on bass and Jason Lingle on drums -- released its last CD, "Return to Elegance," in 2006. Cavanaugh made his final appearance with his trio in June 2007 at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach, where the band had played on Thursday nights for more than a decade. "He loved to entertain," Mallory said.

Cavanaugh, who never married, had no immediate surviving family members. There will be no services.

NY State Budget - Severe Cuts for Funding Music

New York State Budget – Severe Cuts for Funding Music – A Call to Action:

Background: New York State has a significant budget deficit and as a consequence Governor Patterson has proposed various cuts and new taxes. A number of these directly concern our membership including (a) cutbacks in funding for the arts; and (b) cutbacks in school funding that will directly hit the already vulnerable music budgets. Needless to say these measures will reduce opportunities to play, hear, record, and be educated about music. They also will have an economic negative impact on membership.

What We Encourage You To Do: Please contact your congressional leaders by email, phone, or in person to encourage them to oppose the proposed budget cuts. Below provides information from the Alliance of New York State Arts Organizations that may be helpful.

The Governor's proposed cut for the arts in the current 2008-09 budget stands at
$7 million.
And the total cut to the 2009-10 arts budget is almost $10 million from the start of the 2008-09 fiscal year.
***********
CURRENT ARTS BUDGET 2008 - 09

The Governor's proposal remains unchanged. He proposes eliminating the NYSCA funds that have not yet been awarded from the OCTOBER and DECEMBER cycles totaling $7 million. This means that almost all of the almost 600 organizations in those two cycles will not receive any funding.....including those who have general operating support pending. The inequities are staggering!

This proposed reduction is the second one in this current budget (don't forget there was almost approximately a 10% reduction a couple of months ago). It will bring the NYSCA budget down to $38.9 million from $48.5 million at the start of the current fiscal year.
*********
2009 - 10 ARTS BUDGET

The Governor's budget proposes a "$7 million dollar" cut to NYSCA in 2009-10, or $38.9 million for local assistance/grants to the field. HOWEVER, this is actually almost a $10 million cut or approximately a 20% reduction from the beginning of the current fiscal year when the budget was $48.5 million. This means that there will not be an additional cut to NYSCA if the Governor's second proposed cut is approved by the Legislature.

NYSCA Operations budget is almost $5.5 million....down from $6.1 million at the beginning of the current fiscal year and down from $5.7 million after the mid-year cuts.
***********
OTHER ARTS CHANGES IN THE 2009 - 10 BUDGET

The Governor proposes merging the New York State Theatre Institute with the Empire State Plaza Performing Arts Center ("The Egg"). Under the Executive Budget, the New York State Theatre Institute becomes a subsidiary of "The Egg", the Theatre Institute will continue to provide artistic and educational programming for children and families from its current facilities in Troy under the merger. State support for the new organization will be $3.65 million.
***********
ACTION STEPS

We must all take responsibility and act. In this economy no one can afford to sit on the sidelines. So here is what we all need to do:

1. NOW>>>>>>Make appointments to meet your legislators at home...in their district offices before the first week in January. These face to face meetings really matter. Tell your story; dramatize the impact of these cuts in your district. These meetings must take place before the first week in January when the legislative session will begin. We assume the first agenda item will be the Governor's proposed cuts to the current budget.

2. NYS ARTS will mobilize an EMAIL CAMPAIGN before the Legislative Session begins to deal with the current budget reductions. When you receive the email, send it to everyone you know.

3. Come to Albany the first week in January. The arts community must be there when the session convenes to deal with the Governor's proposed cuts to the current budget. We will confirm dates for you.

4. Mark ARTS DAY February 3 on your calendar. Come to Albany. Meet with legislators. Attend the ARTS DAY Reception at the New York State Museum from 5 - 7 pm. A huge turnout will be very important.

5. Watch for NYS ARTS Advocacy Webinars in January. Gather the tips and tools you need to meet with legislators and understand the complexities of the budget issues.

6. The Regional Captain Network, your local advocacy leaders, will be meeting in December to plan and strategize in response to the budget proposals.

CD of the Day - "Quintet of the Americas: Sounds of Brazil"

CD of the Day
Quintet of the Americas: "Sounds of Brazil" (MSR Classics) 2008

Produced by Barbara Oldham. Engineered by Paul Cox.
Recorded January, 2008 in Levenson Recital Hall (Brooklyn College), NY, it's a superb album featuring works by Brazilian composers Gaudencio Thiago de Mello ("Chant No.2 - Uirapurú do Amazonas," "O Canto da Yara," "Canoa Furada," "A Hug for Pixinga," "Varre-Vento" and "Pra Dormir na Rede"), Pixinguinha ("As Proezas de Nolasco"), Ernesto Nazareth ("Brejeiro," "Odeon," "Escorregando," "Apanhei-te Cavaquinho"), Ricardo Romaneiro ("Ventos") and Marcelo Zarvos ("Changes - Sextet for Winds & Piano").
Thiago de Mello (organic percussion), Blair McMillen (piano) & Scott Kuney (guitar) join the five virtuoso members of the Quintet: Sato Moughalain (flute), Matt Sullivan (oboe), Edward Gilmore (clarinet), Laura Koepke (bassoon) & Barbara Oldham (French horn).
Arranged by Daniel Wolff, Stephen Quint, Barbara Oldham & Marco Granados.

The Quintet of the Americas is one of the Western Hemispheres finest chamber ensembles. The Quintet is in residence in The Department of Music and Performing Arts in The Steinhardt School at New York University. Since its founding in Colombia in 1976, Quintet of the Americas has delighted in performing music of South America. Following its successful recording "Dancing in Colombia," the ensemble is proud to be releasing this CD of music with Brazilian roots.

The idea for this disc originated with the Quintet s arrangements of music by Ernesto Nazareth and Pixinguinha. More music from Brazil was added to the Quintet s collection when their long-time friend and inspiration, Brazilian multi-instrumentalist & composer Thiago de Mello, began performing with the Quintet in arrangements of his brilliant songs by Daniel Wolff. Further collaborations with Brazilian pianist and composer Marcelo Zarvos led to the commissioning of "Changes." Rounding out the album is another commissioned work, "Ventos," by the gifted young São Paulo-born (and NY-based) composer, Ricardo Romaneiro.

Quintet of the Americas was founded in 1976 in Bogotá, Colombia, by five players from the United States who were the principal wind players of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional. Two-time recipients of the ASCAP/Chamber Music America Adventuresome Programming Awards, the Quintet s programs have included repertoire as varied as commissioned pieces involving electronic music, Sephardic music, Native American music, music from the African Diaspora and music influenced by jazz, as well as music involving the Quintet s collection of folk instruments including drums, flutes, rattles, conch horns, etc., and music with theatrical elements such as lighting, masks, and choreography. The Quintet has toured extensively in the United States, and in Canada, Venezuela, Colombia, the Caribbean, Ukraine and the Republic of Georgia.

The Quintet is currently in residence in the Department of Music and Performing Arts in the Steinhardt School at New York University. The group's extensive residency experience has included the Chamber Music America Residency Program in Chicago involving Northwestern University, the Chicago Youth Symphony and the People's Music School; Austin Peay State University (Tennessee); and several years at Hunter College (New York) and New York's Americas Society. The group has performed outreach programs for Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concerts, Lincoln Center, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, 92nd Street Y, Midori and Friends, Fondacion Batuta in Colombia, Queens Symphony, and Young Audiences. In 2002, the Quintet gave master classes and concerts for the Special Secondary Music School in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and at the National Conservatoire in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia. The Quintet presents a yearly one-week intensive Institute for Woodwind Quintets and Wind Chamber Music at New York University for high school and college students. The Quintet presented a Carnegie Hall debut recital in 1992 featuring three commissions for Quintet with orchestra.

Other important concerts have included the Carnegie Hall American Music Week Series at Weill Recital Hall, the Bermuda International Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, the Inter-American Festival in Puerto Rico, the Bar Harbor Festival, the Chautauqua Festival, the Pan American Music Festivals at the Library of Congress and the O.A.S. in Washington, the Festival Internacional de Música Contemporanea in Bogotá, Colombia (1993), the First International Congress on Women in Music and two Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors Festivals.

Peter Delano returns to NY

The Return of Pianist Peter Delano celebrating his Suunyside release "For Dewey"

“..Just listening to the sheer energy, joy and overall mastery of For Dewey, makes one more than half-past ready for Peter’s re-entry in the new millennium. I’m willing to bet it is going to be a giant step.” - Ira Gitler

"I can’t remember hearing anyone of his age that well developed...plus that ear, that technique." - Gary Bartz
One of the original New York “young lions,” pianist Peter Delano, makes a welcome, much-anticipated return to his New York stomping grounds with a special appearance at the APAP Convention on Saturday, January 10th, 2008 at 4:20pm in the Harlem Suite of the Hilton Hotel, in celebration of the 1996 recording with Dewey Redman, just released on Sunnyside Records, "For Dewey." The first time I watched him was in 1994, on the LaserDisc "Carnegie Hall Salutes The Jazz Masters - Verve 50th Anniversary", later reissued on DVD in 2002, but only in Asia.

New York pianist Peter Delano thrived in the nineties….a leader of the pack, a photogenic child prodigy, an impossible teenage amalgam of McCoy Tyner’s chordal power, Bud Powell’s linear luminosity, and Keith Jarrett’s pianistic poetry. A student of Red Rodney’s pianist Gary Dial, Delano performed and recorded with the likes of Michael Brecker, Gary Bartz, and Lewis Nash, and burst on the scene with his self-titled 1993 Verve debut, at the age of seventeen, followed by his 1994 Polygram release "Bite of the Apple." He enrolled at Columbia University, but tragically, suffered a debilitating back injury that forced him to stop playing, until he resumed his career in 2007.

"For Dewey" - recorded in 1996 and released on Sunnyside for the first time ever – is a posthumous tribute to the late great tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, with Danish drummer Anders Hentze and bassist Doug Weiss. As Ira Gitler wrote in his liner notes, “Peter continued to fulfill his great promise with his ‘94 release, "Bite of the Apple." What is now "For Dewey" was to be his third CD. It didn’t make it to the public because Peter began to matriculate at Columbia University. He wasn’t available to tour ‘in support’ (as they say) of his recordings and labels want their artists to be visible. For Dewey was yet another forward step. The originals reflect a still-growing Peter, as do his interpretations of the three standards. Redman is a presence on three of the five originals and there is magic in the interaction of the two principals.”

"For Dewey" represents for Peter Delano not only a return to the world of recorded music; it also marks the re-emergence of a shining star in a galaxy of jazz talents.

Box Set of the Day - "To Be Free: The Nina Simone Story"

Box set of the Day (3CD + DVD)
Nina Simone: "To Be Free - The Nina Simone Story" (Sony) 2008

Jazz singer and pianist Nina Simone was such a prodigious talent that even a four-disc box set might seem too small a canvas to fully sketch her genius, but "To Be Free: The Nina Simone Story" is nonetheless an ideal introduction. The three CDs contain 51 tracks covering Simone's career from 1953 to 1993, from her beginnings as a classically trained supper club artiste through her period of political awakening into her later, idiosyncratic blend of jazz, blues, pop, and rock. Including tracks from her periods at the Bethlehem, Colpix, Philips, RCA, PM, CTI (which released the controversial "Baltimore" LP, my favorite Nina album ever) and Elektra labels. The fourth disc is a DVD containing a documentary film with live concert footage that was completed in 1970 but never released until this set. The set also contains eight previously unreleased songs and a book with essays and track-by-track commentary. Includes 24 live tracks and 8 previously unreleased songs, plus the first ever Nina Simone DVD featuring a stunning documentary and 9 additional performances

Truly one of of the greatest African-American female vocalists of the 20th century Nina Simone (1933-2003) holds a special position of honor for the fearless role she played as an uncompromising ambassador of cultural pride at the height of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements from the late 1950s to the 1970s.

The musical roots and branches of Nina Simone’s life are explored in depth. Includes an alternative of the classic track, Ain’t Got No-I Got Life, which continues to be featured in Müller’s advertising campaign.

Aside form the 3 discs & dvd, it comes complete with previously unseen photography from Simone‘s family archives, photos from the personal collection of Nina Simone historian Sylvia Hampton as well as meticulously researched track-by-track annotations written by David Nathan.

EP of the Day - "ET & Deodato"

EP of the Day
E.T. with Deodato: "Hurt Me With Your Love" (Posse) 1985

Produced by Eumir Deodato & ET
Written by D. Mettee & G. Holof
Radio Version Mixed by Deodato, Instrumental & Club Versions Mixed by Kenny Beck
Recorded at Deodato's Duplex Sound Studio, Tribeca Park, NY

From the original press-release signed by Rich Weinman of Posse Records:
"Now, you must admit for the last couple of years the world of dance music has been dominated by the great Shannon, Chaka and His Royal Badness.
Now for something new and refreshing... let me introduce to you the electric lady E.T.
Producer Deodato is the key to this highly erotic production. A very European flavour is evident throughout this track. At 128 bpm's, "Hurt Me With Your Love" reminds me of a cross between "Forbidden Love" and "Love to Love You Baby." The romantic overtones are HOT and STEAMY, and it sounds like E.T. is constantly on the verge of orgasm.
Close your eyes and imagine yourself entralled in the arms of the beautiful E.T."

Monterey Jazz Festival awarded

Monterey Jazz Festival Wins "World's Best Jazz Festival" Award In 2008 JazzTimes Readers' Poll For Third Consecutive Year
Monterey Jazz Festival 50th Anniversary All-Stars Receive Two Grammy Nominations For Live At The 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival

MJF Veterans Terence Blanchard And James Moody Nominated For “Best Jazz Instrumental Solo” Grammys
Grammy Nominations Are Historic First For Monterey Jazz Festival Records

MJF Commissioned Work, Appearing Nightly At The Black Orchid By Carla Bley Also Nominated For Grammy

The Monterey Jazz Festival, a leader in jazz education and presentation since 1958, is proud to announce that the 2008 JazzTimes Readers’ Poll has named the Monterey Jazz Festival as the top jazz festival in the world for the third consecutive year.

The JazzTimes Readers' Poll win reflects MJF’s commitment to presenting the best cross section of creative artists in the jazz world, showcasing the genre's most promising emerging talents, and presenting the country’s top student jazz bands. Highlights of the 51st Festival, held September 19 - 21, 2008, included stellar debuts from Cassandra Wilson, the Derek Trucks Band and Jamie Cullum, with highly anticipated returns of jazz legends and NEA Jazz Masters Nancy Wilson, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter.

MJF/51 Artist-In-Residence, bassist Christian McBride was in full form with a number of his ongoing electric and newly-minted acoustic endeavors, and the Monterey fans were treated to several special projects that were crowd-pleasers: Willow Lake from the Maria Schneider Orchestra (her second commissioned composition for the Festival); the polished Tribute to Cannonball Adderley with Tom Scott, Terence Blanchard and Nancy Wilson; the Kurt Elling Johnny Hartman/John Coltrane homage, Dedicated to You; and Cuban Lullabies from Maraca. In 2008, 43,000 people attended MJF/51.

The Festival is also proud to announce that NEA Jazz Master and longtime MJF veteran, saxophonist James Moody, and 2007 MJF Artist-In-Residence, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, have both been nominated for Grammy Awards in the “Best Jazz Instrumental Solo” category for their improvisations from the Dizzy Gillespie-penned classic song, “Be-Bop” off the Live at the 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival recording on Monterey Jazz Festival Records.

Collectively known as the “Monterey Jazz Festival 50th Anniversary All-Stars,” this stellar group of three generations of jazz masters included James Moody on saxophone; Terence Blanchard on trumpet; Benny Green on piano; Nnenna Freelon on vocals; Derrick Hodge on bass; and Kendrick Scott on drums. The band made two appearances at MJF/50 in 2007 and appeared in a nationwide, 52-date tour across twenty-two states in the first quarter of 2008, performing for over 43,000 fans. The Monterey Jazz Festival Records Grammy nomination will be Mr. Moody’s fourth; Mr. Blanchard has been nominated for eleven Grammys and has won the award three times.

Since the label was launched in 2007, the not-for profit Monterey Jazz Festival Records (an imprint of Concord Records) has released thirteen historic records, including never-before-released live sets from Art Blakey and the Giants of Jazz, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Shirley Horn (her "Live at the 1994 Monterey Jazz Festival" was recently named by the web magazine Slate as the #2 jazz album of 2008), Thelonious Monk, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Sarah Vaughan. The 50th Anniversary All-Stars’ Live at the 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival represents the label’s first non-archival recording, and is the first of the ongoing series to be nominated for Grammys. The Grammy winners will be announced on February 9, 2009 on CBS.

In a related development, the Festival is also proud to announce that the Carla Bley Big Band recording for the WATT/ECM label, "Appearing Nightly," has been nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album” category. The title track, “Appearing Nightly at the Black Orchid” was commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and made its premiere at MJF/48 on September 17, 2005 on the Jimmy Lyons Stage in the Arena. In addition, the web magazine Slate has named Appearing Nightly as the #5 jazz album of 2008.

The 52nd Monterey Jazz Festival will take place September 18 - 20, 2009 and will feature a roster of jazz legends and talented newcomers alike. For MJF/52, the Festival has named as Artists-In-Residence the New Orleans-born trumpeter and multiple Grammy Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize recipient, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The full roster for the 52nd Monterey Jazz Festival will be announced on March 30, 2009; tickets will go on sale the same day. Updates can be found on the web at www.montereyjazzfestival.org

There's Something for Everyone!

What you're saying

Dear Arnaldo,

Our records show that you live in California's 23rd district. You helped build the most powerful and effective grassroots movement in America.

Now, you're helping to define how this movement will support President-elect Obama's agenda and continue to bring the change we need. The more voices that are part of this process, the better the results will be.

And so far, the response has been remarkable -- 550,000 people completed the online supporter survey. And this past weekend, supporters organized more than 4,000 Change is Coming house meetings in 2,000 cities across all 50 states.

Take an inside look at a house meeting in Virginia. Watch the video, see photos from meetings all across the country, and share your feedback. Supporters like you are deciding how this movement will go forward. And your dedication is incredible.

House meetings were held in 2,000 cities. In Florida there were 302 events across the state. In Pennsylvania there were 165, and Ohio had 160. From these meetings, survey responses, and thousands of conversations on My.BarackObama and email, your ideas about the future of this organization are taking shape.

Here are a few things you shared in the survey:
House meetings were the primary way supporters got involved in the campaign;
People are excited to volunteer around a number of top issues, including education, the environment, health care, poverty, and the economy;
86 percent of respondents feel it's important to help Barack's administration pass legislation through grassroots support;
68 percent feel it's important to help elect state and local candidates who share the same vision for our country;
And a staggering 10 percent of respondents indicated that they would be interested in running for elected office;

This feedback is essential to our next steps, because this movement is fueled by your ideas and your passion.

Watch the house meetings video and get involved by taking the survey or hosting a meeting of your own:
http://my.barackobama.com/meetingvideo

Between now and Barack's inauguration, we'll continue to collect your ideas and feedback. After the inauguration, we should be able to announce a clear plan for the future of this movement -- a plan determined by you.

Thanks for being a part of this journey to bring about change in the years to come,

CD of the Day - "Deanna Witkowski: Length of Days"

CD of the Day
Deanna Witkowski: "Length of Days" (ArtistShare) 2005

Nice originals (the sensual opening track, "Beautiful Hands," reveals the strong influence of Eliane Elias) and creative renditions of such tunes as "Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo," "Straight, No Chaser," "In The Still of The Night" and specially "I'm Beginning To See The Light" (done in a delightful afro-cuban groove) make this album by NY-based pianist/vocalist Deanna Witkowski a highly recommended item. She's supported throughout the session by Dave Ambrosio (bass), Vince Cherico (drums) & Donny McCaslin (sporano & tenor daxophones).

Vinyl of the Day
Azymuth: "Butterfly" (Far Out) 2008

After three years performing Herbie Hancock's "Butterfly" in live concerts with Ithamara Koorax all over the world, Azymuth's keyboardist José Roberto Bertrami decided to suggest to London-based impresario Joe Davis (head of Far Out label) that the group should record it on their next album.
Now released both on CD and LP formats, with "Butterfly" used as title track, this turn out to be Azymuth's best album during their Far Out era. "Butterfly" is also the opening tune of the CD, but appears as the first track of Side B on the vinyl version.
To kick off Side A, Davis and producer David Brinkworth chose "Os Cara La", with a hypnotic funk groove propelled by Alex Malheiros' pumping bass and Ivan Conti's thundering drums, sounding reminiscent of their best work for Milestone in the early 80s.
The three musicians contribute with strong originals, with Bertrami's "Triagem" being the most efervescent one. Bertrami's keyboard arsenal includes Fender Rhodes, Hammond, Vocoder, Mini Moog. Alex doubles on acoustic guitar. Ivan is also heard on percussion.
Arthur Verocai wrote string scores for "New Dawn" and "Butterfly", besides adding electric guitar to the remake of "Morning" (Manhã), originally recorded in 1975 for the Som Livre LP which included "Linha do Horizonte."
Other guests: Robertinho Silva, Tiago Martins, José Carlos "Bigorna" Ramos (Zé Bigorna), Paulinho Guitarra and Alex Pilkington.

"Quincy Jones' new memoir"
David Rubien - San Francisco Chronicle
Sunday, December 14, 2008

There doesn't seem to be a big enough pie for Quincy Jones to get all his fingers in. Even the Earth itself falls short of his grasp.

"You know that tune I arranged for Count Basie and Sinatra, 'Fly Me to the Moon'?" Jones asks. "It went up to the moon with the astronauts in 1969, and Buzz Aldrin played it when they landed on the moon." Jones, 75, is speaking over the phone from his mansion in Bel Air.

Correct that: not just in Bel Air. "All the way at the top of Bel Air."

Yes, it can be revealed that Quincy Delightt Jones Jr. has an ego. That comes with the territory when you reach his level of accomplishment. The dude has so many citations - 27 Grammys (the most ever), scores of Oscar nominations and Golden Globes, dozens of awards for worldwide humanitarian efforts and a few handfuls of honorary university degrees - that he makes a joke about the one he's picking up Monday for his induction into the California Hall of Fame, an honor he's sharing with Jane Fonda, Jack LaLanne, Jack Nicholson, Dave Brubeck and several others.

"I'm going up to Sacramento to pick it up from Ahhhhnold," he says.

On Tuesday, Jones talks at Herbst Theatre for City Arts & Lectures, part of a tour he's on to promote his new book, "The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey & Passions." Unsurprising for a Jones project, the book is unique. It has to be one of the most lavishly produced volumes of photos and memorabilia ever published, containing high-quality reproductions of items like Jones' report card from Schillinger House of Music (which became the Berklee School of Music); pages from Jones' appointment calendar from 1955, when he was leading a big band (with handwritten notes like "call Hamp" and "call Bags" and "Dentist"); ledger pages indicating what he, as a producer, was paying musicians ($240 to Ray Charles in 1959 for recording "Deed I Do" and "Let the Good Times Roll"); and the original scribbled-on sheet music for the Jones-produced "We Are the World." You can actually remove these items from their special pockets in the book.

At Herbst, interviewer Ben Fong-Torres - who is reportedly writing a biography of Jones - will have his work cut out for him, because Jones' talking style is strictly stream of consciousness, and mile-a-minute at that. An anecdote about his boyhood in Chicago can lead to a story about Miles Davis, which can segue into Jones' ideas about artificial intelligence, leading him to talk about the French Huguenots and the ghettos of Brazil. And so on.

In that spirit, we will provide a few chronological signposts, then just let Jones rip.

-- Born in Chicago: "My daddy (Quincy Jones Sr.) was a carpenter who worked for gangsters. You can't believe what it was like in Chicago then. It was the biggest ghetto in America, and this was the Depression. All I ever saw was tommy guns, stogies, dead bodies in the streets. When I was 10 years old, I got my hand impaled on a fence. ... I'd probably be dead if we had stayed in Chicago."

-- The family moves to Bremerton, Wash., when Jones is 10. He starts playing piano, then trombone and finally trumpet. Two years later, the family moves to Seattle, and Jones starts doing professional gigs, including with Ray Charles.

"He was two years older than me, and I wanted to be him. He was so independent; he had his own apartment. He came from Florida. He hated Florida. ... He said, 'When I get $600, I want to get as far away from Florida as I can get.' That was Seattle."

-- At 17, Jones joins vibist Lionel Hampton's band, where he starts doing arrangements. This leads to arranging for many others, including Dizzy Gillespie, Big Maybelle and Dinah Washington. Jones releases his first album, "This Is How I Feel About Jazz," in 1957. He moves to France and produces and arranges many albums for Barclay Disques while studying composition with Nadia Boulanger.

"One day I get a call from Grace Kelly in Monaco. She says, Mr. Sinatra wants me to bring 55 musicians to Monaco for a fundraiser. So I put together a band. I get onstage, and he was like a magician. Only about six words passed between us. I didn't even know if I was on his radar screen.

"Four years later, he calls me from Kauai. Says 'Q' - nobody ever called me 'Q' - 'I just heard the record you did with Basie, "Fly Me to the Moon." I like it in 4/4 the way you did it. Would you consider doing that with me and Basie?'

"I said, 'You gotta be kidding. ...' Two days later I was in Kauai. I got to know him. He had a little bungalow with a big picture of Jack Daniel's on the wall. ... People think Frank is this tough guy, but if you know him, he's really sweet and giving. You know, Frank and Buddy Rich got their personalities from Tommy Dorsey. Dorsey was a salty Irish alcoholic, and Frank and Buddy imitated him. ...

"Frank used to say, 'Q, live every day like your last, and one day you'll be right.' "

-- In 1961, Jones goes to work in the artist and repertoire department of Mercury Records. In 1964, he's promoted to vice president, becoming the first African American to hold a position that high in the record industry. He produces several hits for Lesley Gore, including the No. 1 "It's My Party," and goes on to produce and arrange hit records for dozens of artists, ranging from Louis Armstrong to Charles to Aretha Franklin to Little Richard to Paul Simon.

-- Jones composes his first film score in 1961, for Swedish film "The Boy in the Tree," and does his first score for a Hollywood film, "The Pawnbroker," in '64. This leads to dozens of scores, from "Walk Don't Run" to "The Hot Rock," and TV themes for "Ironside," "Sanford and Son" and the "Roots" miniseries.

"I knew it was going to be hard for a black guy to break into movies. ... When I was signed up to do 'In Cold Blood' in '68, Truman Capote did not want me to do that film. He said, 'I just don't understand why you want a colored man's music in a film with no Negroes.' At Universal, they didn't even have any black people in the kitchen then."

-- While Jones is serving as musical director and composer on "The Wiz" in 1978, star Michael Jackson asks if Jones will produce his solo album. Jones agrees, but at first Epic Records declines, saying he's too jazzy. But he produces "Off the Wall," then "Thriller," which becomes the biggest-selling album of all time, eclipsed since then only by the Eagles' greatest-hits disc.

-- Jones produces the song "We Are the World," written by Jackson and Lionel Richie, as a fundraiser for Ethiopian famine victims. Sung by the composers along with pop stars including Bob Dylan, James Ingram, Al Jarreau and Waylon Jennings, the song was a huge seller, raising more than $60 million.

-- Jackson accidentally facilitates Jones' move into full-fledged film producing. Jones was attempting to develop Alice Walker's novel "The Color Purple" into a film. He had already done the seemingly impossible, lining up Steven Spielberg, whom he befriended during the making of "E.T.," to direct the film, budgeted at $14 million. Spielberg agreed to work for scale. Then the film had to be cast.

"I was in Chicago testifying for Michael Jackson in a plagiarism case. I was in the hotel watching news on the TV and saw this reporter, and something made me think she could act. I asked around and they said her name was Oprah. I had never heard a name like that. Oprah spelled backward is Harpo, and we needed to cast Sophia, who was married to Harpo in 'The Color Purple.' It had to happen."

-- Not only did Jones launch the career of the one of the most successful female entertainers of all time, he did the same for the man who's the biggest star in Hollywood right now: Will Smith. Jones spotted his talent when Smith was rapper Fresh Prince and invited him to audition for the show Jones was producing, called "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."

"Will's figured it out. He's bigger than the movies. He's amazing."

CD of the Day - "Mark Murphy: A Swingin', Singin' Affair"

CD of the Day
Mark Murphy: "A Swingin', Singin' Affair" (Fontana/Verve) 2008

Produced by Jack Baverstock, recorded April 8-10, 1964, in London (UK), this album was originally released as "A Swingin', Singin' Affair" (Fontana SRF 67537, USA) and "Mark Time!" (Fontana TL 5217, UK).
Now it re-appears on Verve's "Jazz Club" series, including the original liner notes by Dick Tatham.
Reissue Producer: Matthias Kunnecke.
Arranged & Conducted by John Dankworth, Les Reed and Tubby Hayes, includes Murphy's original readings of songs by The Beatles ("She Loves You") and Charles Aznavour ("Ballyhoo"), plus Tony Bennett's signature song "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". There's also "My Foolish Heart", "I'll Be Around", "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "The Best Is Yet To Come".

Vinyl of the Day - "J&K: Stonebone"

Vinyl of the Day
J.J. Johnson & Kai Winding: "Stonebone" (A&M/CTI) 1970

One of the rarest albums in the CTI history. The last LP of Creed Taylor's association with the A&M label. Never released outside Japan. Never reissued on CD not even in Asia.
Also the last collaboration between the genius Pete Turner (my favorite photographer in the world) and Sam Antupit (the album designer during the A&M/CTI era).
Excellent liner notes by the master Ira Gitler, the top jazz historian along with the late Leonard Feather.
Two intriguing J.J.Johnson's tunes - "Musing" and "Mojo" - plus an extended funky version of Rudy Stevenson's "Dontcha Hear Me Callin' To Ya?" and a typical Joe Zawinul fusion theme, "Recollections" (Kai Winding quotes the Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" during his inspired solo). Bob James, who plays celeste on the track, arranged "Recollections"; all others were scored by J.J. Johnson.
Featuring: George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Bob James, Ron Carter, Grady Tate and Ross Tompkins. Engineered by Rudy Van Gelder. 5 stars.

Tim Armacost & Craig Bailey live in NY, Dec. 16

Help us welcome Tim Armacost and Craig Bailey for the last concert of 2008 when they bring the Brooklyn Big Band to "Jazz Tuesdays" next Tuesday, December 16 in the Gillespie Auditorium at the New York Baha'i Center at 53 East 11th Street (between University Place & Broadway). There will be 2 shows at 8:00 and 9:30.

Saxophonists Tim Armacost and Craig Bailey formed the Brooklyn Big Band to harness the powerful energy of a core group of musicians who were regulars at Bailey’s Dean Street jam session in the early nineties. Their vision has resulted in an explosive live recording from New York’s famed club, Sweet Rhythm. The co-leaders are committed to presenting new music primarily written and arranged by group members. Performances are marked by an electric mixture of exceptional rhythm section playing, spontaneous creation of compositional elements, and disciplined ensemble work.

The BBB had its first regular engagement in the spring and summer of 2001, playing at Caviar, a new music club near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. One of the early performances was profiled by the WB, New York Television’s channel 11, for its evening newscast. After a hiatus, the group had its second weekly gig at Atlantic Avenue’s Po’k Knockers, for most of the year 2003. The band had its Manhattan debut in the summer of 2004, with two sold out Monday nights at Sweet Rhythm. The success of the Manhattan shows has led to regular performances at Sweet Rhythm. In the summer of 2007, the BBB performed a program of famed producer Teo Macero’s music at Birdland, which became one of the final performances attended by Mr. Macero before his passing at the end of the year.

Admission is 15.00, 10.00 for students.
Tickets will be sold at the door, or call 212-222-5159 for reservations and information.

R.I.P.: Omar Clay

Omar Clay
(born St.Louis/MO;
died Dec. 4, 2008, San Francisco/CA)

The first time I listened to Omar Clay was on Johnny Hammond's LP "Wild Horses Rock Steady", recorded for Creed Taylor's Kudu label in 1971. Not even in my wildest dreams I could imagine that, three decades later, I would be producing the first CD reissue ever of that album, for which I also wrote the liner notes in 2001, when it was released in Japan as part of the "Kudu Best 12" series. Most recently, I also produced a second CD reissue of "Wild Horses..." in 2007, for the "I Love Kudu - Best 20" series.

Drummer-percussionist Omar Clay died December 4th in San Francisco from Lou Gehrig's disease. He was an active player on the New York scene in the 1960s and 1970s, playing & recording with Max Roach's M'Boom group (on which he played marimba, xylophone, tympani and timbales), as well as with Elvin Jones, Randy Weston, Sarah Vaughan, Horace Silver, Charles Mingus, Ernestine Anderson, Marian McPartland, Frank Foster, Gene Ammons and David 'Fathead' Newman. Since 1979 he lived in California where he also was active as a teacher. He was also a member of Warren Smith & The Composer's Workshop Ensemble, recording on their self-titled 1995 album. Omar Clay - drummer who loved to teach - dies
Jesse Hamlin, Chronicle Staff Writer
Friday, December 12, 2008

Omar Clay, a respected jazz drummer and teacher who recorded with dozens of prominent musicians - among them Sarah Vaughan, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver and Marian McPartland - died Dec. 4 in San Francisco of complications from Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 73.

A valued player on the New York jazz scene in the 1960s and '70s, Mr. Clay was featured in master drummer Max Roach's all-percussion ensemble M'Boom, playing marimba, tympani, timbales and xylophone. He was equally at home working with singer Ernestine Anderson and hard-blowing saxophonists like David "Fathead" Newman, Frank Foster and Gene Ammons. During the day, he taught at New York's High School of Music and Arts.

"Omar was one of the great drummers," said fellow percussionist Eddie Marshall, who praised Mr. Clay's clean playing and steady ride-cymbal beat. "He was really a traditionalist. He was a total team player. He never showed off. He didn't thrash, but he swung."

Pianist Larry Vuckovich, who played and recorded often with Mr. Clay in recent years, put it this way: "Omar was one of the most serious, dedicated drummer-percussionists, possessing a wide range of knowledge, not only of jazz but of classical music, both of which he taught. His jazz drumming roots came from the Kenny Clarke bebop style, but expressed a feeling beyond the bebop era, including a strong affinity for Latin music and other world music forms. On the bandstand, Omar held to a very high standard, and at the same time was very supportive and tuned into the other musicians."

Born in St. Louis, Mr. Clay grew up in Steubenville, Ohio. He had a keen ear for classical music, listening to the Russians Shoshtakovich and Rachmaninoff. He got a scholarship to study music at Xavier University in New Orleans but left after a semester to join the Army. He played drums in an Army jazz band stationed in Germany, then got a bachelor of music degree at the University of Michigan. He played and taught in New York for nearly 20 years, working in jazz clubs and in the Broadway pits orchestras for "Raisin" and "Guys and Dolls."

Mr. Clay moved to California in 1979, first to the Monterey and then San Francisco, where he performed with various groups and got a master's degree in music education at San Francisco State University. He taught around the Bay Area until becoming music director at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, where he also coached the golf team for a spell. He retired in 2000 but continued to perform, tour and golf.

Mr. Clay is survived by his longtime companion, Barbara Chew of San Francisco; his mother, Elnora Jackson of Akron, Ohio; and a daughter, Wanda Davis of Hayward.

A memorial is being planned for January.

The family requests donations be made in Mr. Clay's memory to the Forbes Norris ALS Research Center, 2324 Sacramento St., Suite 111, San Francisco, CA 94115; the music department at Tamalpais High School, 700 Miller Ave., Mill Valley, CA 94941; or the VA Medical Center, 4150 Clement St., San Francisco, CA 94121.

Bill Henderson to release new live CD in January

Bill Henderson's new CD, "Beautiful Memory," due January 20 from his own Ahuh Productions
Recorded live at the Vic in Santa Monica in 2007, the album is Henderson's first independently released project
Veteran jazz singer Bill Henderson is caught in classic swinging form, his vocal powers undiminished, on the forthcoming CD "Beautiful Memory: Live at the Vic." Recorded at the Santa Monica club in March 2007, three days after Henderson's 81st birthday, the CD will be released January 20 by his own Ahuh Productions.

Henderson plans a CD release event for Feb. 1 (matinee) at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, and will also appear at the Newport Beach Marriott on Feb. 14. His 83rd birthday bash takes place at Catalina's, Los Angeles, March 17. The singer appears monthly at Charlie O's in Van Nuys.

Come May 17, the Palo Alto Jazz Alliance presents Henderson and Mike Melvoin playing the music of Mercer & Mancini. In early August, Henderson returns to the Litchfield (Connecticut) Jazz Festival.

"Beautiful Memory" is in many ways a retrospective of Henderson's repertoire. With his working trio, pianist Tateng Katindig, bassist Chris Conner, and drummer Roy McCurdy (famous for his association with Cannonball & Nat Adderley), Henderson performs songs such as "A Sleepin' Bee" (one of the standouts from his 1959 debut LP for Vee-Jay) and "You Are My Sunshine" (from the 1963 Verve album Bill Henderson with the Oscar Peterson Trio). Also included on the new CD are "Never Make Your Move Too Soon," the B.B. King hit; a rare vocal reading of "Royal Garden Blues"; and the seldom-performed Ellington number "Tulip or Turnip."
The CD marks Henderson's 50th anniversary as a recording artist. He made his debut on a 45 version of "Senor Blues" with Horace Silver not long after arriving in New York from his native Chicago. (It remains one of the Blue Note label's top-selling singles.) Between 1958 and 1961, Henderson recorded for Vee-Jay, with arrangements by Jimmy Jones and Thad Jones, and then for Verve, which released the 1963 album with Oscar Peterson, the biggest seller of the singer's career. Henderson joined Count Basie in 1965 at the recommendation of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and spent two years with the band.

In 1967 Henderson relocated to Hollywood at the suggestion of his friend Bill Cosby and for the past 40 years has pursued a successful acting career in film and television. His credits include series such as "Happy Days," "Sanford and Son," "The Jeffersons," "Good Times," "Hill Street Blues," and "NYPD Blue" as well as films like Trouble Man, Silver Streak, Fletch, City Slickers, White Men Can't Jump, Lethal Weapon 4, and The Alibi.

He never stopped singing, though his recordings and club appearances became less frequent. In recent years, however, Henderson was less than pleased with some of the roles he was being offered. "When you get older," he says, "directors think of you as being like a grandfather, and they always want you to be angry. When the roles started getting funny, I said I'd better go back to singing again. That's the thing that I really started out to do."

Between 1979 and 2006, Henderson recorded albums for Discovery (two of which received Grammy nominations), Classic, Naim, and Web Only Jazz. In 1999, he split vocal duties with Shirley Horn on Charlie Haden's Verve CD "The Art of the Song." He's appeared at the Kennedy Center in Washington, and in New York at the Algonquin's Oak Room and at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Hall. Henderson was also featured on the 1990 LaserDisc "Nancy Wilson Presents Great Jazz Night - Red Hot & Cool II", on which he sang three tunes filmed at the Baltimore Hotel in LA. Among them, a lovely take on Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer's "Moment To Moment".

Influenced early on by his peers, the late Joe Williams and Dick Haymes, Bill Henderson quickly emerged as an original voice and distinctive musical personality. In an early 1990s review of a Los Angeles club performance, the late critic Leonard Feather characterized Henderson as "one of the few totally qualified male jazz singers still extant" -- and that remains an apt description today.

CD of the Day - "Don Ellis: Soaring"

CD of the Day
Don Ellis: "Soaring" (MPS/Verve) 2008

Reissue (produced by Matthias Kunnecke for Verve's "Jazz Club" series) of Don Ellis' excellent 1978 LP for the MPS label.
Originally recorded under the supervision of Baldhard G. Falk in Hollywood, California, it features the late Don Ellis playing trumpet, electric trumpet, flugelhorn and even drums (on "The Devil Made Me Write This Piece"). Don's electrified and electrifying big-band includes such great musicians as Gary Herbig, Fred Selden and Sam Falzone, playing on top of an intrepid rhythm section: Bulgarian genius Milcho Leviev (acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, organ & clavinet), bassist Dave McDaniel (who recorded on the Wayne Shorter/Milton Nascimento's collaboration "Native Dancer"), drummer Ralph Humphrey, percussionists Lee Pastora & Ron Dunn, and guitarist Jay Graydon (also heard on "Native Dancer"). The ingenious scores also incorporate an "electric string quartet". Highly recommended.

R.I.P.: Jimmy Gourley

Jimmy Gourley
(born June 9, 1926, St. Louis/MO;
died Dec. 7, 2008, Villeneuve-Saint-George/France)

The guitarist Jimmy Gourley died December 7th in Villeneuve-Saint-George, a suburb of Paris, at the age of 82. Gourley played with several Chicago bands before moving to Paris in 1951 where he performed with musicians such as Martial Solal and Bobby Jaspar, but also with many of the American expatriates living in Paris at the time. In 1954 he returned to Chicago for three years, then moved to Paris permanently in November 1957. He played with Kenny Clarke at the Blue Note club, but also had his own trio, often with the organist Eddy Louiss. In the early 1970s Gourley ran his own club in the Canary Islands. In 1994 he took French citizenship. Gourley was able to introduce a bebop-influenced guitar style to Europe where most guitarists in the 1950s were heavily influenced by the dominating influence of Django Reinhardt. Message from the Berklee College of Music

December 9, 2008

Dear Arnaldo,

For many of us, the holiday season reminds us of the importance of our family and friends and of strengthening the bonds among us all. The same is true for the extended Berklee family, especially at a time when the tumultuous global economy is compelling organizations and individuals everywhere to clarify priorities. Our No. 1 priority is our current students and making sure they have the resources they need.

With that in mind, I am pleased to announce a $2 million package of additional loans, grants, scholarships, and work-study support to help keep Berklee affordable for the spring 2009 semester. The program is aimed at domestic and international students coming from families with demonstrated financial need. While I harbor no illusions this effort will meet all the needs caused by the economic downturn, I know it will help many students and their families. We're also extending registration and payment deadlines to give students and their families every opportunity to cope with financial pressures.

- Alumni from around the world always remind me how important it is that Berklee remain current and cutting-edge. We take this mission seriously, and despite the changes in the economy, Berklee is experiencing a period of extraordinary activity and evolution.
- We are creating a new center for music business, liberal arts, and music therapy, with construction set to begin in 2009.
- Applications to the college continue to increase, with early-action applications up more than 30 percent from last year.
- Our new First-Year Student Advising Program (in its second year) is helping entering students navigate Berklee more effectively.
- Our efforts to create a greener campus have reduced our energy consumption by one-third over the last two years.
- We continue to be blessed with an array of wonderful visiting artists and clinicians, including Eva Ayllón, Daniel Lanois, John Mayer, Meshell Ndegeocello, Wayne Shorter, and Don Was, among many others.
- Our Giant Steps capital campaign has crossed the $30-million mark and we are well on our way towards our $50-million goal; in fact, our success in this effort has, in part, allowed us to create this new financial aid program.

The financial crisis may make it increasingly difficult for us to accomplish our goals as quickly as we would like. We know the same is true for you, so we are grateful for any donations you can make, especially now which will be earmarked directly for our scholarship efforts (Make a gift online).

In fact, it is during times of global anxiety that music reminds us of what is truly lasting and worthwhile in life: our common humanity and the friendship and compassion we feel for one another. I wish you the best for a happy and healthy holiday season and I look forward to welcoming you back to campus should you come for a visit.

Sincerely,

Roger H. Brown
President

R.I.P.: Butch Cornell

R.I.P.: Butch Cornell
(born November 21, 1941 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA)
died December 07, 2008 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA)

The first time I listened to Butch Cornell was on Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar", the saxophonist's legendary debut solo LP for CTI, recorded in November 1970 at Van Gelder Studios in New Jersey - and I'm sure that's how thousands of other jazz fans became acquainted with his talents. At that time, Cornell, who had moved earlier that year to NY, was a member of Turrentine's working band since September 1970, along with drummer Billy Kaye and guitarist Ray Prince (Cornell used pedals to play "the bass", so no bassist was needed...)
(Cornell, Kaye, Turrentine & Prince, 1970)

In his LP liner notes for "Sugar", my dear friend and top jazz historian Ira Gitler wrote: "Both organist Butch Cornell and drummer Billy Kaye are members of Turrentine's present combo. Cornell, Chattanooga born, was found by Stanley in Harrisburg, Pa. He was formerly with Willis Jackson. The particular clarity with which he articulates his lines is refreshing."
The original vinyl issue included three tracks: Turrentine's "Sugar" and Cornell's "Sunshine Alley" on Side A, and John Coltrane's "Impressions" on Side B, also featuring George Benson, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Lonnie L. Smith, Jr. and Richard "Pablo" Landrum, besides the aforementioned Cornell and Kaye. The cover art (by album designer Elton Robinson) features a controversial shot by photographer genius Pete Turner. "Back in the 1960s I had done a series for Look magazine called 'Black Is Beautiful.' The image on the cover of Sugar is an outtake from that shoot, of a mother licking a baby’s foot. Some people think it’s a sexual thing, but it’s not" Turner told to Marc Myers' excellent "JazzWax" blog last year. http://www.jazzwax.com/2008/04/pete-turner-c-1.html
(btw, that pic is included on Pete Turner's latest book, the superb "The Color of Jazz")

"If ever there were a record that both fit perfectly and stood outside the CTI Records' stable sound, it is Sugar by Stanley Turrentine. Butch Cornell's 'Sunshine Alley' is a solid, funky groover, paced by organ and double fours by Kaye. Turrentine and Hubbard stride into the melody and keep the vamp in the pocket, riding out past the blues line into a tag that just revs the thing up even further," jazz connoisseur Thom Jurek wrote in his review for the All Music Guide.

It's interesting to mention that, around the same time of the "Sugar" session for CTI, Butch Cornell also recorded "Sunshine Alley" when doing a sideman date (on November 23, 1970) for Boogaloo Joe Jones' "No Way!" album for Prestige.

At the time of the first CD reissue of "Sugar" in the USA market, in late 1987, reissue producer (and former CTI publicist) Didier Deutsch added a previously unreleased studio version of Hubbard's "Gibraltar", recorded in that same session. However, the many unreleased alternate takes of Butch Cornell's "Sunshine Alley" remained lost in the vaults, and were never included in any of the several subsequent CD reissues that came out in the USA, Europe and Japan. (For instance, in the 2002 CD reissue, also produced by Didier for Sony, he replaced "Gibraltar" for a live version of "Sugar" recorded during a CTI All-Stars concert at the Southgate Palace.)
Curiously, although having performed with Turrentine on live gigs for a decade, and despite the big critical and commercial sucess of "Sugar" (the LP reached the Billboard charts as #3 Jazz Album, #29 Black and #182 Pop Album!), Cornell was not invited by CTI's head Creed Taylor to take part of any of the Stanley albums that followed (with such keyboardists as Horace Parlan, Eumir Deodato, Richard Tee, Bob James, Harold Mabern and Herbie Hancock). Neither Turrentine invited him to the many other sessions he did after signing with Fantasy Records in 1974.

However, Cornell took part of some Stanley Turrentine's recordings for CTI which were never used on the "official LPs" ("actually they were what Creed used to call 'rehearsal sessions' because he was like testing musicians and tunes before coming up with the final concept for an album," Rudy Van Gelder explains). Some of those tracks eventually appeared in such compilations as "The Sugar Man" (a collection of out-takes released in 1975 including four tracks Cornell recorded in February and March 1971 alongside Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, George Benson, Kenny Burrell and Ray Barretto, with arrangements by Don Sebesky and Chico O'Farrill) and "The Best of Turrentine" (released by CBS in 1990 including two other previously unreleased tracks from the March 9, 1971 sessions). And, needless to say, the original 1970 version of "Sugar" has been included in dozens of compilations released all over the world. For additional details, please visit the definitive CTI website created by Douglas Payne: http://www.dougpayne.com/cti.htm
Bio: Butch Cornell was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He began his musical career at the age of 10, studying classical piano with Mrs. Lillian Cadek Dame of Cadek Conservatory. He credits his aunt Rinaldo Anderson for his earliest musical experiences. He began working with Charles Young (Saxophone) and the Pace Setters Band (which also featured Joe Burke on Drums and Joe Bennett on Bass) in and around the Chattanooga area at the age of 14. After graduating from Howard High School, Butch moved to Harrisburg, PA where he formed an Organ (Hammond B-3) Trio and worked several club dates and concerts on the east coast and in the mid-west. His first recording sessions were with Willis "Gator" Jackson and Boogaloo Joe Jones.

In 1970, Butch moved to New York City. During this time, Butch met and worked with several top-rated musicians and singers. He started his long association with Stanley Turrentine in September of 1970, and two months later he recorded the classic "Sugar" album for CTI, which included Cornell's own composition "Sunshine Alley." Since that time he worked with Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, Grover Washington Jr., Plas Johnson, Wilfred Middlebrooks, Arthur Prysock, Ernestine Anderson, Alice Day, George Coleman, Kenny Burrell, Woody Shaw, Billy Cobham, Johnny Lytle, and many lesser known artists. After returning to his native Chattanooga, Butch founded a jazz society called "Friends of Jazz, Inc." and became the organist of the Prospect Baptist Church. He died of kidney failure.

Introducing Linda’s New CD, "The Other Side Of Me"!

“It took a year and a half to make my new CD, The Other Side of Me, but in reality, it has been a lifetime in the making,” writes Linda on her website.

“The Elton John song from The Lion King has been playing in my head lately. It's called “The Circle of Life” and I've come to understand it much better than I used to. I've been blessed with a successful singing career — the kind of career that young singers aspire to — and for that I am grateful. I've also been cursed with a self-critical, constantly-searching-for-something mentality that can be hard to live with. This CD represents so many things, but most importantly, it represents the need to be myself.”

“I have talked often in interviews about my early vocal influences; the women whose voices inspired me to build my own voice. I fell in love with a vocal sound and I followed that sound into the types of music that those voices favored. I learned, I emulated, and I took on the role and it has taken me many wonderful places. I love the classic standards, will never abandon them, and I wouldn't trade one minute of my career, but I feel a need to grow, to move forward, and to do that I have to go back to the beginning,” Linda continues.

“As a kid I was a talented but undisciplined piano student. So in one of our early changes of address, the upright piano was left behind. As a young teenager I bought myself a cheap acoustic guitar so I would have a way to accompany my inner poet. What I wrote in those early years and the voice that I used to sing was the truest expression of who I really am. There were no outside influences to color or shape the vowels or direct the emotions. There was no record of past performances to measure up to, just my own words, my own history, and my own voice.”

“I have finally been given the chance to strip away the costume and sing without the voice of others in my head. I've traveled a long road to find my way back home and I have found it. The Other Side of Me is my voice.”

“My co-producer and friend, Billy Jay Stein, and I created The Other Side of Me together. It is an album of American pop and country flavored songs and arrangements. Each song was chosen because it felt like something I wanted say. It is heavy on acoustic guitar with melodies and rhythms designed to make you feel good as you drive down a stretch of highway or a country road. I hope you will find as I do that the songs grow on you rather than wear you out and make repeated listening easy and desirable. I think you will feel good after listening because the messages are mostly positive and uplifting. My desire was not to sing at you but to sing with you . . . to go to a sunny stretch of road and stay there for awhile. If you are looking for the echo of Judy or Barbara you won't find it in this CD. If you want to hear The Other Side of Me . . . here I am. Hop on the Bus!”

For those who think that free jazz is inherently unapproachable, Numero D’Vol proves that it’s possible to be completely spontaneous while creating music with an instinctive focus. Saxophonist Simon Picard, keyboardist Steve Franklin and drummer Charles Hayward join Soft Machine Legacy’s Hopper for a session that proves there’s even room for a backbeat in purely improvised music. There’s also space for contemporary textures and a touch of ambient music as Franklin layers synth washes underneath his more oblique pianism. Picard, also a member of guitarist Phil Miller’s In Cahoots, brings an angular lyricism to this hour-long experiment in rhythm-based collective interaction.
*****
When it comes to a long and diverse career ranging from psychedelic space and progressive rock to free jazz and everything in between, there’s only one bassist who’s done it all: Hugh Hopper. Hopper may not be a virtuoso by conventional definition, but his strong voice, potent grooves and innovative textures have made him an essential and unmistakable component of every project with which he’s been associated.

Hopper was there at the beginning of the British Canterbury scene. A charter member of the under-recorded but vastly influential Wilde Flowers, Hopper joined the legendary Soft Machine in late 1968, and can be heard on many of the group’s classic jazz/rock albums including Third (1970) and Fourth (1971). It was there that Hopper met Elton Dean. Despite the saxophonist/pianist’s free jazz leanings and Hopper’s more compositional approach, the two found much common ground, and their paths would continue to intersect on a regular basis up until Dean’s unexpected passing in 2006.

When Hopper left Soft Machine following the release of Six (1973) he had already been experimenting with tape looping for many years; a concept explored to great effect on his first solo album, the classic 1984 (1974). The more band-oriented Hopper Tunity Box followed in 1977, along with collaborations that included the late Gilgamesh keyboardist Alan Gowen, jazz composer/bandleader Carla Bley, Soft Head and Soft Heap - the first of what would become a series of Softs-related projects defined by the participation of Hopper and Dean.

After a couple of years off in the early ‘80s, Hopper “began to get the music virus again,” joining up with ex-Hatfield and the North guitarist Phil Miller’s group In Cahoots, which also featured Dean. Hopper and Dean were also charter members of Equipe Out, another post-Hatfield band led by drummer Pip Pyle (who also passed away in 2006). But it was a Dutch Soft Machine fan, who told the bassist that if he ever wanted to play in Holland there’d be plenty of people ready to work with him, that resulted in a revived career as a bandleader. Hopper’s jazz/fusion Anglo-Dutch band (later, with the addition of French guitarist Patrice Meyer, Franglo-Dutch band) would work through to the mid-1990s, releasing albums including Meccano Pelorus (1991) and Carousel (1994).

Any working musician will tell you that it’s virtually impossible to put all your eggs in one basket. So while Hopper pursued his own brand of fusion with the Franglo-Dutch band, he was also doing free improvisation with Dean, pianist Keith Tippett and drummer Joe Gallivan; epic mixes of composed and improvised works with ex-Henry Cow woodwind multi-instrumentalist Lindsay Cooper on Oh Moscow (1991); psychedelic improvisations with space rock/jam band progenitor Gong and its various offshoots; and Brainville - a collaboration with Pip Pyle and Soft Machine co-founder Daevid Allen, who called it “the most eccentric three-piece jazz rock outfit of the Canterbury school.”

More recently Hopper continued to expand his innovative looping concept in collaboration with American artist Matt Howarth for the multimedia The Stolen Hour (2004); record two albums of curiously skewed pop songs with singer Lisa S. Klossner; and joined forces with avant rockers Caveman Shoestore to create Caveman Hughscore (ultimately reduced to Hughscore).

Through it all, Hopper has continued to work with Dean on Softs-related projects including the free jazz-centric Soft Bounds, the equally free but more expansive Anglo-Japan group Soft Mountain, and a collaboration with the French Collectif Polysons for 2004’s Polysoft: Tribute to Soft Machine.

Soft Works was formed in 2003 with Soft Machine alumni John Marshall (drums) and Allan Holdsworth (guitar), releasing one album (2003’s Abracadabra). When Holdsworth became unavailable former Softs guitarist John Etheridge was brought in and Soft Machine Legacy was born.

As with all Softs projects, Soft Machine Legacy honors the adventurous spirit rather than the literal letter of Soft Machine, but this time with a much harder rock stance. With Dean the group released two albums for MoonJune - 2005’s Live in Zandaam and an eponymous 2006 studio album. Dean’s death in February 2006 temporarily threw the group into disarray, but with the recruitment of woodwind multi-instrumentalist Theo Travis - an established artist with deep roots in both Canterbury and jazz traditions - the group has moved towards an even more aggressive and open-ended approach that will not only appeal to the progressive rock crowd, but jamband fans as well. A new album has already been recorded with the new line-up, and will be released by MoonJune later this year.

These days Hopper is also occupied with a new group, Numero D’Vol, whose first album will be released by MoonJune in March, 2007. A quartet featuring saxophonist Simon Picard (also a current member of Phil Miller’s In Cahoots), keyboardist Steve Franklin and drummer Charles Heyward, Numero D’Vol has its own take on free improvisation that incorporates reckless abandon with ambient textures, visceral grooves and staggering collective interplay.

Now in his early 60s, Hopper is busier than ever, his significance increasingly appreciated by new generations of musicians and fans.

CD of the Day - "Marilyn Mazur: Elixir"

CD of the Day
Marilyn Mazur & Jan Garbarek: "Elixir" (ECM) 2008

Recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in June 2005, but only released in April 2008, "Elixir" (produced by ECM founder Manfred Eicher) is a thought-provoking, compelling, and rewarding listen for adventurous audiences.
Dannish percussionist and composer Marilyn Mazur is a fascinating musician whose skill and flair has adorned jazz projects led by such masters as Miles Davis (check her astonishing performances on the "Aura" CD and on the "Live in Munich" DVD) and Gil Evans, as well as with cult pop star Joe Jackson. Jan Garbarek, the Norwegian reedman, plays mostly tenor sax on this date, sometimes also using soprano sax and flute. He's regarded as one of the most distinctive jazz musicians Europe has produced, known for many recordings under his own name and with Keith Jarrett and Naná Vasconcellos for ECM.
"Elixir" is just these two, a series of concise duet performances where the lines between jazz, folk, and world music blur. Garbarek's chilly but soulful tone soars and sears over, under, and with Mazur's crackling, pulsing, rumbling, dancing range of sounds. Throughout the 21 tracks, Mazur is heard on such instruments as marimba, Indian cowbells, udu drum, bowed vibraphone & waterphone, bells & sheep bells, gongs, cymbals, various kinds of drums and "metal-utensils". Pure magic!
