Barbara in California

In September, Barbara Dennerlein visited California to attend the Monterey Festival and play at Yoshi's in Oakland. But first of all she visited Pete Fallico, acknowledged Hammond organ expert, concert manager and "Doodlin' Lounge" radio man. He owns the B3 that Jimmy Smith loved most to play, and Barbara didn't miss out playing her tunes on that organ.

The "Jazz Observer" is a website dedicated to spreading the word about great music. A labor of love from jazz journalist Forrest Dylan Bryant, who is an independent journalist, a frequent contributor to "JazzTimes" and "DownBeat" magazines, and an active member of the Jazz Journalists Association.

For him (admittedly completely subjective) the Barbara Dennerlein Trio finished third among the top shows of the 51st Annual Monterey Jazz Festival which is quite a good score as measured by roundabout 100 concerts in total - and artists such as Herbie Hancock, Maceo Parker, Joshua Redman, Wayne Shorter, Cassandra Wilson,... He wrote:

"Swinging into the Monterey Jazz Festival’s final evening, German organist Barbara Dennerlein wastes no time in digging a deep soul-jazz groove. “Easygoing,” an original tune with a cool “Killer Joe” walking vibe, finds Dennerlein stretching out almost instantly with a supercharged solo that sounds like it requires three hands. And then, as if to make sure all cylinders are firing at full capacity, she immediately leaps into a second solo, using nothing but the bass pedals at her feet.

Having thus established her total mastery of organ-jazz conventions, Dennerlein then proceeds to shatter the mold. Without ever sacrificing the almighty groove, she calmly guides her trio into dense thickets, modernist harmonies and odd meters. Dennerlein possesses awesome technique and a prodigious feel for the dynamic range of her instrument, varying the feel throughout each tune from a whisper to a scream. An accomplished pipe organist as well, Dennerlein frequently makes the B3 mimic its larger cousin, at one point summoning a remarkable 5 second blast like a Bach fugue, a radio soap opera and a sci-fi movie score rolled into one. These are the best moments of the set, with Dennerlein and guitarist Brian Pardo crackling with the concentrated power and focus of a laser beam, rapturous
and unrelenting.

Pardo begins with a cool West Coast sound but quickly detours into raucous blues-blaster territory, leaning back on his stool as his fingers calmly conjure fire. It’s all supported with confident spirit by drummer Paul van Wageningen, who never calls attention to himself but brings surging momentum to every song."

Russian organ pipes

From Hammond to pipe organ: In Cheljabinsk and Samara Barbara Dennerlein and Rhoda Scott met for two concerts at the cities' philharmonic halls. These concerts contrasted to Barbara's venues in California as well as to the the organists' last meeting in summer in South France.

Concerts in October

After being travelling around the world Barbara concentrates on Europe in October with only one exception. Again she will meet several colleagues on stage: Ignatz Netzer & Thomas Scheytt or Wolf Doldinger & band.

Hoorn in The Netherlands will be the venue on October 4th of Barbara's next concert with Chico Freeman. This time the trio will be completed by Pius Baschnagel (dr) from Switzerland.

On October 10th, Barbara Dennerlein will play during the MM Jazz Festivals, where Austrian jazz singer Marianne Mendt provides a stage not only for estabished artists but also for talented newcomers. It is a concern that Barbara willingly supports because she knows that it's not easy even for excellent new artists to receive the deserved advertance without a little help from the noted collegues.

Visiting the USA the last time for this year, the organist will attend the City Jazz Festival in Pittsfield/MA on October 19th and present the "two faces of jazz organ" in her concert in the First Baptist's Church: the pipe organ and the Hammond B3.
The October concerts will finish in North Italy with the Steinegg Live Festival.
You will find the complete tour list below.
