The acclaimed concert performed by Brazilian maestro Arthur Verocai in LA, one year ago, is being released today by the Mochilla label as part of a 3-DVD set titled "Timeless." Verocai's brilliant performance, conducting a 30-piece orchestra, features such guests as keyboardists José Roberto Bertrami (on Hammond organ) & Aloisio Milanez (aka Aloisio Aguiar on acoustic piano & Fender Rhodes), drummer Ivan Conti (Mamão), percussionist Airto Moreira, reedman Justo Almario, trombonist Elizabeth Lea, and vocalists Clarisse Grova, Carlos Dafé & Diana Moreira Booker.
The two other DVDs are devoted to Mulatu Astatke and the late producer/composer J. Dilla, whose work is celebrated by Carlos Niño and arranger/conductor Miguel Atwood-Ferguson in a haunting "Suite For Ma Dukes." Btw, in the bonus chapters of "Ma Dukes," Diana Moreira, daughter of Flora Purim & Airto Moreira, is featured singing the lovely "Saudade Vem Correndo," written by my late friends Luiz Bonfá & Maria Helena Toledo, both uncredited on the DVD data.

The creative center of popular music today is the beatmaker/ producer. Great guitar performances by Sheryl Bailey (with a warm and beautiful tone that brings together the best of Jim Hall, Kenny Burrell and sometimes Wes Montgomery, not to mention Emily Remler), who is backed by the Three Rivers Orchestra co-directed by Steve Hawk (lead trumpet) & Mike Tomaro (soprano & alto saxophones).
Highlights: J.J. Jonhson's haunting balled "Lament" done in an unsual medium-tempo arrangement, Remler's "East to Wes" and the groovy samba "Carenia" (with trombonist Jay Ashby showcasing his abilites as a percussionist), "Miekkaniemi," reminiscent of Thad Jones/Mel Lewis' best scores in the early 70s, and an inspired up-tempo take on the standard "You and the Night and the Music."

The sixth CD by Sheryl Bailey represents something of a homecoming for the New York-based guitarist. It's her first collaboration with producer Marty Ashby and the MCG Jazz label, which is affiliated with the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Sheryl's hometown of Pittsburgh. And the project is a tribute to guitarist Emily Remler (1957-1990), whom Bailey first saw perform at the University of Pittsburgh Jazz Festival in 1984 and whose originality and musicianship deeply impressed and inspired Sheryl, then 18 years old.

"I promised myself that I would be a great player and that I'd work hard at it," says Bailey, who over the past decade and a half has established herself as a jazz guitar stylist of the first order and, along with Remler, one of only a handful of female guitarists to have achieved prominence during the entire history of jazz.

The new CD resulted from a 2006 chance meeting at the 55 Bar in Greenwich Village, when Ashby was visiting New York and stopped by to catch Sheryl's set. Within minutes of hearing her first tune, Ashby recalled, "I realized that I was somehow connected to her playing [which] propelled me -- on the spot -- to want to work with her."

"A New Promise" teams the guitarist with Pittsburgh's extraordinary 16-piece Three Rivers Jazz Orchestra for eight selections, including three composed by Remler ("East to Wes," "Mocha Spice," "Carenia") and three by Bailey. Mike Tomaro and John Wilson arranged the big band tracks, which feature guest appearances by Marty Ashby on acoustic guitar, Jay Ashby on trombone and percussion, and vibist Hendrik Meurkens.

"She paved the way for me," Bailey says of Emily Remler. "I really felt her pain and her struggle with where she was at that time being a woman player. I really wanted to hear Emily's person in me when I played. It meant a lot to me to do this tribute and pay homage to her and to say thank you."

Sheryl Bailey, who comes from a family of classical pianists, picked up the guitar at age 13 and at first was "really into heavy metal." A few years later she became fascinated by the music of Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell, and her mother, relieved, hired a guitar teacher and encouraged Sheryl to study.

By the time Bailey entered the Thelonious Monk Guitar Competition in 1995 -- she placed third, and was the competition's first female instrumentalist finalist -- she'd already released her debut as a leader on her own Pure Music Records. "Little Misunderstood" (1993), which featured pianist George Colligan, bassist Vince Loving, and trumpeter Chris Battistone, was followed in 2000 by "Reunion of Souls," with guitarist Chris Bergson, bassist Ashley Turner, and drummer Sunny Jain.

Her longtime working band, the Sheryl Bailey 3 (with Gary Versace on Hammond B3 and drummer Ian Froman), is heard on three Pure Music CDs: "The Power of 3" (2002), "Bull's Eye" (2004), and "Live @ the Fat Cat" (2006) -- as well as the DVD "Live in NYC."

Bailey has for the past nine years been an Assistant Professor of Guitar at the Berklee College of Music, from which she had graduated earlier, and is an in-demand clinician who's also written two instruction books (the latest of which, "Moveable Shapes: Concepts for Reharmonizing ii-V-I's", was published by Mel-Bay in 2009). But she remains an omnivorous and grandly versatile player, working in contexts from jazz to rock and klezmer and hip-hop, touring and recording with Richard Bona, Klezmer Madness, Jazz Guitars Play Jimi Hendrix, and, sometimes, her guitarist friend Jack Wilkins. "I don't really separate them all," says Bailey of the various musical forms with which she is involved.

Monterey Jazz Festival Announces Members of 2010 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra

The Monterey Jazz Festival announced the members of the 2010 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, the Festival's internationally-renowned high school all-star big band. Created as a part of the Monterey Jazz Festival's continuing commitment to jazz education and selected through an application process during MJF’s Next Generation Jazz Festival each spring, the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra includes the most talented high school jazz students from all regions of the United States.

A three-year grant from the Surdna Foundation supports the Next Generation Festival and the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra's U.S. and international tours. The Surdna Foundation’s Arts Program is national in scope and supports the artistic advancement of teens, ages 12 - 18.

Formerly known as the MJF High School All-Star Big Band (from 1971-2004), the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra represents the future generation of jazz stars through a program that selects the best and brightest high school jazz musicians in the country.

Former members of the Orchestra include pianists Benny Green and Patrice Rushen, bassist Larry Grenadier, drummer Chad Wackerman, saxophonists Joshua Redman, Eric Marienthal, Dave Koz, trombonist Andy Martin, and big band leader Gordon Goodwin to name a few. In the past, the band has been under the leadership of Ladd McIntosh, Don Schramber, Benny Golson, Bill Berry, and many more.

Now under the tutelage of Mr. Paul Contos, the renowned saxophonist and flautist who serves as the director of the Orchestra, the ensemble is dedicated to the study and performance of the most challenging big band literature available. Orchestra members are selected through a rigorous audition process that includes review by a national panel of judges comprised of professional jazz musicians and educators. The Monterey Jazz Festival invited interested students to audition for the NGJO via video tape or in person, during MJF's 6th Annual Next Generation Jazz Festival, held April 9 – 11, 2010 in downtown Monterey.

In 2010, there are nine returning members for the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, including saxophonists Andrew Olson (Tualatin High School, Tualatin, Oregon) and Maximillian Zooi (Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Los Angeles, California); trombonists Kyle Molitor (Tigard High School, Tigard, Oregon), Jon Hatamiya (Davis Senior High School, Davis, California), John Egizi (Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Los Angeles, California) and Emmanuel Rojas (Warren High School, Downey, California); trumpeters Joshua Gawel (Daniel Boone Area High School, Birdsboro, Pennsylvania) Noah Hocker (American Music Program, Portland, Oregon); and vocalist Ben Lusher (The Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, New York). John Egizi and Emmanual Rojas are three-time members of the band this year.

All together, twenty-one high school musicians from six states comprise the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, including eleven students from California, five from Oregon, two from New York, and one each from Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Members of the band from California represent six counties, including Alameda, Los Angeles, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Yolo counties.

After obtaining a place in the Orchestra, members gather for one weekend in the summer to begin rehearsals in preparation for a domestic or international tour. Previous tour destinations for the Orchestra have included stops at festivals and various venues in Canada, Japan, Australia, and Europe, including recent performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, and the Paris Hilton in France (2007); the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2008); and a 10-day U.S. tour from Kansas City to Washington D.C. (2009). In 2010, the band will perform a North American Tour, which includes performances in Cleveland, Toronto, Montreal, and New York City, from June 30 - July 7, 2010.

“The Next Generation Jazz Orchestra’s 10-day Tri-C to NYC 2010 summer tour should prove to be truly memorable,” said Dr. Rob Klevan, Education Director for the Monterey Jazz Festival. “Beginning with our first performance, which will take place at the newly renovated Hanna Theater in Cleveland, (home of Sean Jones and the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra), we’ll share the stage with the Tri-C All-Star Band and special guest Dominick Farinacci. Then, armed with passports in hand, we take Canada by storm with performances slated at the Rex Hotel and Toronto Jazz Festival in Toronto, and the Montreal Jazz Festival. Finally, back to the USA for two sets at New York City’s famed Jazz Standard, where they have great BBQ as well. It should really be fun, and personally, I can’t wait!”

The Next Generation Jazz Orchestra will also make their traditional Sunday appearance at the 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival Presented by Verizon on September 19, 2010, with MJF Artist-In-Residence Dianne Reeves sitting as a special guest.

Henry Gaffney, a faculty member of the Berklee Songwriting Department, died on May 23 of lung cancer. He was 61 years old.

A remembrance will be held at The Loft on the second floor of Berklee's Uchida building. Kari Juusela is in the process of organizing a program of short tributes. If you would like to speak about Henry, play or sing, please contact him at kjuusela@berklee.edu.

Gaffney began teaching at Berklee in 1995 after three decades of success in the songwriting and recording industries. Rolling Stone called one of his early solo albums, On Again Off Again, "touched by brilliance." Gaffney went on to become a staff songwriter at Koppelman/Bandier Publishing, where he wrote tunes for Roberta Flack, the Four Tops, Judy Collins, Glen Campbell, and other stars. He contributed many songs to the television show Fame and composed and arranged the score for the critically acclaimed film Sidewalk Stories, which won the 1988 Prix du Public award at the Cannes Film Festival. How are you? Thankfully, for me May and June have been packed with gigs with various bands. I did a nice private event at a winery in Woodside last night with Los Boleros, and we have more shows coming up in that configuration, including Yoshi's Lounge during the Fillmore Salsa Festival in July!

I wanted to alert you to a wonderful venue supporting live music in the South Bay, Azucar Latin Bistro. You may have seen all the Facebook chatter about what a fun place this is and all the bands that have been enjoying the audience there! In fact, I'll be playing there tomorrow (Sunday) night, 7-10 pm, with Jeff Chambers on bass, Murray Low on keyboard and Brian Andres on drumset. We'd love to see you!

Also, this Wednesday I'll be doing a free lunchtime concert with my 6-piece band as part of the Summer Sounds Concert Series at Oakland City Center, 12th and Broadway. That's Wednesday, noon to 1 pm. Oakland Tribune music critic Jim Harrington plugged it and said my band was one to watch! OK Jim, we'll take your word for it!

On "Harlem Sunset" (Postcards 1006) his first CD as leader and composer, as well as drummer, the visionary drummer/composer brought together an exciting and talented group of musicians — saxophonist Gary Bartz, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist Steve Nelson, trumpeter Claudio Roditi, and bassist Buster Williams, along with Mr. White, on energetic and enthusiastic renditions of original compositions as well as standards.

Chip's second CD, "Music and Lyrics," was released in 2005. He wrote, arranged, and produced all the compositions on this recording, which features the wonderful voice of Gail Allen and the lush tenor saxophone sound of Houston Person, along with pianist Lafayette Harris and bassist George Kaye.

Chip's recording, “Double Dedication”, a two-CD set, features 13 original compositions honoring jazz masters on one CD, and the other contains his poems for each of these artists (from his book, I'm Just the Drummer in the Band) with the music sequenced underneath. The band includes Wycliffe Gordon, Randy Brecker, Steve Wilson, Kenny Barron, Ray Drummond, and vocalist Gail Allen.

"Dear Arnaldo:

Yesterday, I visited Caminada Bay in Grand Isle, Louisiana -- one of the first places to feel the devastation wrought by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. While I was here, at Camerdelle's Live Bait shop, I met with a group of local residents and small business owners.

Folks like Floyd Lasseigne, a fourth-generation oyster fisherman. This is the time of year when he ordinarily earns a lot of his income. But his oyster bed has likely been destroyed by the spill.

Terry Vegas had a similar story. He quit the 8th grade to become a shrimper with his grandfather. Ever since, he's earned his living during shrimping season -- working long, grueling days so that he could earn enough money to support himself year-round. But today, the waters where he has worked are closed. And every day, as the spill worsens, he loses hope that he will be able to return to the life he built.

Here, this spill has not just damaged livelihoods. It has upended whole communities. And the fury people feel is not just about the money they have lost. It is about the wrenching recognition that this time their lives may never be the same.

These people work hard. They meet their responsibilities. But now because of a manmade catastrophe -- one that is not their fault and beyond their control -- their lives have been thrown into turmoil. It is brutally unfair. And what I told these men and women is that I will stand with the people of the Gulf Coast until they are again made whole.

That is why, from the beginning, we have worked to deploy every tool at our disposal to respond to this crisis. Today, there are more than 20,000 people working around the clock to contain and clean up this spill. I have authorized 17,500 National Guard troops to participate in the response. More than 1,900 vessels are aiding in the containment and cleanup effort. We have convened hundreds of top scientists and engineers from around the world. This is the largest response to an environmental disaster of this kind in the history of our country.

We have also ordered BP to pay economic injury claims, and this week, the federal government sent BP a preliminary bill for $69 million to pay back American taxpayers for some of the costs of the response so far. In addition, after an emergency safety review, we are putting in place aggressive new operating standards for offshore drilling. And I have appointed a bipartisan commission to look into the causes of this spill. If laws are inadequate, they will be changed. If oversight was lacking, it will be strengthened. And if laws were broken, those responsible will be brought to justice.

These are hard times in Louisiana and across the Gulf Coast, an area that has already seen more than its fair share of troubles. The people of this region have met this terrible catastrophe with seemingly boundless strength and character in defense of their way of life. What we owe them is a commitment by our nation to match the resilience they have shown. That is our mission. And it is one we will fulfill.

"Jasmine" marks Keith Jarrett's first recorded collaboration in decades other than with his standards trio, and reunites him with the great bassist Charlie Haden, a close partner until the mid-70s. Intimate, spontaneous and warm, this album of love songs recorded at Jarrett's home, has affinities, in its unaffected directness, with his solo collection "The Melody At Night With You." These deeply felt performances should inspire any listener "to call your wife or husband or lover in late at night," as Jarrett says in his liner notes, "These are great love songs played by players who are trying, mostly, to keep the message intact." The program on Jasmine includes such classic songs as "Body and Soul", "For All We Know" , "Where Can I Go Without You", "Don't Ever Leave Me" as well as a rare Jarrett cover of a contemporary pop song, "One Day I'll Fly Away," co-written by Joe Sample & Will Jenning for singer Randy Crawford.

Jarrett and Haden play the music and nothing but the music - as only they can. As Keith Jarrett says in his liner notes: "This is spontaneous music made on the spot without any preparation save our dedication throughout our lives that we won't accept a substitute... "Music is an amazing thing. It doesn't exist as a stationary object. It moves in real time and can be uplifting both to the player and the listener. The melting, trans-figurative moment, that feeling of everything being there, just for an instant, that surrender that overcomes us as players (if we're good enough) and leads us on to the next pregnant second, patient in the knowledge that there always is, waiting in the wings, the next chance to feel this fullness and celebrate it (as it is only in the nature of art to produce it this way); to this we dedicate our lives. But it is not for us alone; it is also made for you, the listener, to feel these same feelings along with us, to participate and to also be uplifted by it. Art is dying in this world, and so is listening, as the world becomes more full of toys and special effects. With this death will come the undoing of many possible feelings: beautiful, tender, deep, trusting, true, sad, full of internal meaning and color. Closeness won't have to necessarily be physical. Intimacy will be hard to find.

Communication will be lost. Here is some music for you. Take it and it's yours. Charlie and I are obsessed with beauty. An ecstatic moment in music is worth the lifetime of mastery that goes into it, because it can be shared.

This recording was done in my small studio. It has very dry sound and we didn't want to have the recording sound like anything but exactly what we were hearing while we played. So it is direct and straightforward. I chose to use the American Steinway that really isn't at all in the best of shape, yet I have this strange connection with it, and it is better for a kind of informality and slight funkiness that was going to work with the music. With a choice of songs this good, it was hard not to become engaged right away. We did not rehearse per se, but went over chords when necessary. This was really a session that came as a result of doing an interview for a film about Charlie, after which we played a couple tunes. We had not played in over thirty years, but something magical happened and I then invited Charlie and his wife to the house to do some playing for a few days with no assurance that we'd have anything (including sound) that we'd want to release.

Over close to three years we lived with these tapes, talked a lot about them, disputed over choices, but eventually I found Charlie to be the most remarkable and sensitive helper in getting this finally assembled. I wanted only the distilled essence of what we had, and it took some time to wean ourselves from going for hip solos or unevenly played tunes (even though they had wonderful things inside them). Some were too long; others were somehow out of character.

Charlie and I listened to this many many times (mostly late at night) and became aware that there were some that just had more magic, more moments of surrender to the mood while retaining their essential integrity. This is what I was looking for; and then I had the unenviable job of finding the right order. After I thought I found it, Charlie called me and said, "How did you figure that out?" I think I said that none of the rational ideas of how to order things made sense, so I went into "not thinking" mode and came up with (dare I say it?) the only perfect order of these great versions.

I hope many of you can hear this on a good system. There are nuances abounding and the details make the music what it is. Jasmine is a night-blooming flower with a beautiful fragrance and I hope you can hear what went into this, as there is no way to do anything as touching as this by rehearsing it until it dies. This is spontaneous music made on the spot without any preparation save our dedication throughout our lives that we won't accept a substitute: it's either the real thing or it's nothing. It's either real life or it's a cartoon.

Perfekt getimte Reunion

Gut 30 Jahre nach ihrer letzten Zusammenarbeit haben Keith Jarrett und Charlie Haden für ECM das Duo-Album "Jasmine" aufgenommen
Manchmal ist es einfach nur eine Frage guten Timings! Dass Keith Jarrett und Charlie Haden den perfekten Zeitpunkt für ihre Reunion gefunden haben, weiß man schon nach wenigen Takten des ersten Songs ihres Duo-Albums "Jasmine". Mit geradezu majestätischer Ruhe und vollendeter Eleganz interpretieren sie Fred Coots' "For All We Know". Dass sie geschlagene dreißig Jahre lang getrennte Wege gegangen waren, mag man angesichts ihres traumwandlerischen Zusammenspiels kaum glauben. Aber es ist tatsächlich so: Ihre letzte musikalische Begegnung hatte 1976 stattgefunden, als sie für ECM gemeinsam mit Dewey Redman und Paul Motian das Live-Album "Eyes Of The Heart" aufnahmen. Das Quartett zählte damals zur Jazz-Avantgarde und war für die Musiker eine experimentelle Spielwiese. Heute besitzen Jarrett und Haden eine ganz andere musikalische Reife und verstehen es wie nur wenige andere Musiker, alles Unwichtige abzustreifen und sich auf die musikalische Essenz der Songs, die sie spielen, zu konzentrieren. Selbst wenn das Tempo wie bei Redd Evans' "No Moon At All" einmal angezogen wird, strahlt dieses Duo eine unglaubliche Ruhe aus, in der seine wahre Kraft liegt.

Die Reunion der beiden kam eher zufällig zustande. Anfang 2007 war Jarrett von dem Dokumentarfilmer Reto Caduff darum gebeten worden, sich für "Rambling Boy", ein Biopic über Charlie Haden, an die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Bassisten in den 70er Jahren zurückzuerinnern. Als sich Haden und Jarrett während der Dreharbeiten trafen, kamen sie auf die Idee, noch einmal völlig zwanglos zusammen zu spielen. Diese Session machte beiden aber so viel Spaß, dass Jarrett Haden zu sich nach Hause einlud, um dort weiterzumachen. Und so trafen sie sich dort im März 2007 und zogen sich vier Tage lang in Jarretts Heimstudio zurück.

"Diese Aufnahme wurde in meinem kleinen Studio gemacht", erzählt Jarrett in den Linernotes des Albums. "Deshalb klingt sie so direkt und unmittelbar. Ich entschied mich dafür, auf meinem amerikanischen Steinway zu spielen, obwohl der wirklich nicht in bester Verfassung ist. Aber ich mag ihn seltsamerweise einfach. Und für die Ungezwungenheit und dezente Funkyness, mit der ich diese Musik angehen wollte, ist er besser geeignet. Wenn man dann so großartige Songs spielt, geht man auch gleich mit dem richtigen Engagement zur Sache. Wir haben nicht im eigentlichen Sinne geprobt, sondern nur da, wo es nötig war, ein paar Akkorde ausprobiert... Dies ist spontane Musik, die aus dem Stegreif und ohne jegliche Vorbereitung entstand. Wenn man einmal die Hingabe außer acht lässt, die wir dieser Musik unser Leben lang gewidmet haben und die wir natürlich gegen nichts in der Welt eintauschen würden. Es sind großartige Liedeslieder, gespielt von Musikern, die sich, zumindest meist, bemühen, die Originalbotschaft der Songs intakt zu lassen. Ich hoffe, man kann sie aus unseren Interpretationen noch heraushören."

Neben zeitlosen Jazzklassikern wie "Body And Soul", "For All We Know", "Where Can I Go Without You?" und "Don't Ever Leave Me" spielte das Duo hier auch einen Song ein, der aus dem Repertoire heraussticht: die soulige Popballade "One Day I'll Fly Away ", die Joe Sample und Will Jennings 1980 für die Sängerin Randy Crawford geschrieben hatten. Jarrett wurde auf die Nummer aufmerksam, als er sie in der Version von Nicole Kidman in dem Film "Moulin Rouge" hörte. Gemeinsam mit Charlie Haden erhob er den wunderbaren Song nun in den Rang eines Jazzstandards.

At the pinnacle of his career, Dave Holland has settled into the unassuming role of jazz master. The multi-award and poll-winning bassist, composer, arranger and bandleader leads two of the most vibrant groups in jazz: the Dave Holland Quintet and the Dave Holland Big Band. He has collaborated in two of the top jazz collectives of the decade: the ScoLoHoFo quartet comprised of Holland, John Scofield, Joe Lovano and Al Foster and the Herbie Hancock-piloted all-star quartet including Wayne Shorter and Brian Blade.

A onetime sideman with two titans of jazz, Thelonious Monk (a short tenure) and Miles Davis (a seminal experience during the trumpeter's Bitches Brew era), Holland made his debut as a leader in the early 1970s. He broke in as a leader with Music for Two Basses (1971) with Barre Phillips and Conference of the Birds (1972) with a band featuring Sam Rivers and Anthony Braxton. Holland also expanded his work as a side musician to include recording with a diversity of artists such as Bonnie Raitt (Give It Up, 1972), John Hartford (Morning Bugle, 1972) and Lee Konitz (Satori, 1974).

9 for the musical content - the only shame is an horrible version of "Desafinado" in a ridiculous singing duet; it's easy to understand why Frank Sinatra never wanted this track to be released...
0 for the new mixing - landmark albums like these don't need to be remixed, it's something to be avoided at all costs; the new terrible mixing (by Larry Walsh) destroyed the original ambiance and was done to please the Ipod generation that dislikes a big stereo range; on track 13, "Someone to Light Up My Life," Sinatra seems to be stranguled, and elsewhere his voice sounds metallic; Jobim's acoustic guitar also was deteriorated, sounding thin and metallic, like the drums too; and where's the bass??? the new mix ruined Ogerman's and Deodato's orchestrations; it's a multiple crime!
0 for the dull remastering - the entire re-equalization (by Dan Hersch) completes the disaster;
1 for the ridiculous liner notes (by Stan Cornyn), full of stupid anecdotes, wrong infos (Cornyn insists that Frank invited Claus Ogerman to arrange the 1967 album, when everybody knows that Claus - who had never worked with Sinatra before - was Jobim's choice) and arrogant comments; the booklet includes the famous photo of Sinatra & Jobim with Dom Um Romão, Ray Gilbert & Aloysio de Oliveira, but they are not identified on the pic;
0 for the data info - all musicians are uncredited, except Dom Um Romão (the main drummer on the 1967 session) because he's briefly mentioned on the notes; all others - Don Payne, João Palma, Claudio Slon, Chico Batera, Chuck Berghofer, Ted Nash, Milt Bernhart, Paul Horn, Buddy Collette, Dick Nash, Ken Shroyer, Vincent DeRosa and Israel Baker, to name a few - were ignored.
We've waited over 4 decades to listen to the complete Sinatra-Jobim sessions and we receive this shit!

The Creed Taylor Orchestra: "Panic/Shock" (Righteous)

Two cult albums by The Creed Taylor Orchestra - "Shock" (1958) and "Panic: The Son of Shock" (1959) - were reissued on a single CD released by the UK-based Righteous label. Oddly, they placed the tracks of "Panic" ahead of "Shock." Although they used vinyls as master sources - it's possible to hear some scratches and noises -, this CD sounds much better than another "unofficial" previous compilation, "Shock, Panic and Nightmare" that came out on the stranger Fear label in 2001.

It's a shame that, except for Phil Woods and Phil Kraus, none of the other great musicians(Barry Galbraith, Jerome Richardson, Milt Hinton, amongst others) neither the composers(!) are credited on the CD booklet, which includes terrible liner notes written by Dave Henderson, full of ridiculous mistakes. One of the unbelievable sentences says that Creed Taylor "played with Sammy Davis, Jr., Les Brown, Astrid (sic) Gilberto!"

In the late 50s, Creed was working as A&R at ABC-Paramount, where he would found the Impulse! label in 1960. Later, he joined Verve, A&M, formed his own CTI and the rest is history.
Sub-titled "Don't Dare Listen To This Music Alone," "Shock" had his cover art conceived by Matt Schutz, with front cover and liner pics by Tony Triolo. David Drew Zingg signed the liner notes, and Kenyon Hopkins wrote the arrangements and most of the compositions. There are also amazing versions of "Gloomy Sunday," "Spellbound" and specially Alec Wilder's "It's So Peaceful in the Country". Creed Taylor, who was 29 at that time, assembled an all-star cast, featuring Phil Woods (lead alto sax), Jerome Richardson (second alto & flutes), Ray Beckenstein (soprano & bass sax), Ray Alonge (French horn), Barry Galbraith & Mundell Lowe on guitars, Milt Hinton on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, and percussionists Joe Venuto & Brad Spinney.

Tracks like "Jungle Fever" anticipate the wild sounds that Brazilian percussion masters Airto Moreira (both as a leader and sideman) and Dom Um Romão (who recorded for CTI only as a sideman) would develop for Creed in the early 70s, explaying why the producer was so fond of their talents. As Zingg points out, "the female voices. groans and screens were provided by Toni Darnay (she can be found in a state of shock on the cover of this album) and Gertrude Warner," with extra sound effects added by Keen Crockett. "A heavy percentage of the gasps, shrieks and groans belong to Keen, and all of the wildly varied sounds were conjured up by him. One microphone was aimed at his feet for the sound of the shuffling intruder, and the other was poised at his mouth for the sounds of breathing. No wonder he couldn't cry for help!"

For the follow-up "Panic," Creed and Kenyon Hopkins repeated both the same musicians (Phil Kraus was added to the percussion section) and formula, including amazing renditions of "You're Driving Me Crazy," "Heartaches" and "Out of This World." The album design was done by the Viceroy company, with liner notes provided by Jerry Lanning. An excerpt: "Creed Taylor, who hosts this more-than-slightly-askew soirée, is a blithely imaginative young man...Mild and unassuming to the naked eye, he has constructed here an album which, to the naked ear, may sound a trifle strange. It is not, however, merely a trifle strange."

A marvelous gift from my dreamgirl Lisa Marie. After the issue released in UK, here comes the "new definitive" issue of "Let's Get Lost," the one-of-a-kind bittersweet splendid documentary by the superphotographer Bruce Weber about jazz legend Chet Baker. Hip & sad, cool & somber, it received an Academy Award Oscar nomination for "Best Documentary" and won the Critic's Prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Now released in France as a 2-DVD + 1-CD deluxe package, it includes the complete movie remastered in High Definition (DVD 1) plus a second DVD titled "Les Compléments," with a making-of ("À la recherche de Chet Baker"), 8mm footage archives by Jeff Preis, 2 Chet videoclips directed by Weber ("Everything Happens To Me" and "Almost Blue"), plus the short films "Tromba Fredda" ("Cold Trumpet," directed by Enzo Nasso in 1963, featuring Chet Baker both as an actor - no words spoken - and as the composer of the soundtrack completely improvised, including uncompannied trumpet solos only, except for a final theme played with an acoustic guitarist) and Bruce Weber's "The Teddy Boys of the Edwardian Drape Society" (1996).

It's also interesting to mention that the soundtrack from "À La Recherche de Chet Baker," a kind of making-of narrated by Weber, includes an "unknown bossa nova" written by Antonio Carlos Jobim (no, it's not "Absolute Lee") and ends with the haunting ballad "So Hard To Know," co-written by Brazilian composer/keyboardist Rique Pantoja and lyricist Roxanne Seeman, but credited only to Roxanne on the DVD.

There's also a bonus CD with two previously unreleased tracks from the "Let's Get Lost" sessions that took place in LA back in 1987: the French standard "C'Est Si Bon" and John William's "Make Me Rainbows" (a jazzy theme from the 1967 "Fitzwilly" soundtrack, his first collaboration with lyricists Alan & Marilyn Bergman) on which Chet was backed by Frank Strazzeri (piano), John Leftwich (bass), Ralph Penland (the uncredited drummer on "Make Me Rainbows") & Rob Kyle (tenor sax, overdubbed in 2008).

All this material is packed in a wonderful book with gorgeous pics by Weber and William Claxton plus "new" texts (in French) by Weber and Herbie Hancock. Actually, Herbie's text is basically the same he wrote for the "Let's Get Lost" soundtrack CD released by RCA/Novus.

Once again I felt deeply moved watching this brilliant film once again; not only because I've been a big fan of Chet since my childhood, but also because I had the chance to meet him in person (and hang out with him!) back in 1985, when he went to Rio for the first Free Jazz Festival. On that occasion, the myth patiently autographed many LPs and CDs from my Chet Baker collection. I remember how surprised he became when I told that "She Was Too Good To Me" and "Studio Trieste" were some of my favorites, 'cause both were among his favorite albums too.

Through this film I also became aware of the most beautiful and fascinating woman I've ever known, the eternally bewitching Lisa Marie (now Lisa Marie Smith and a dear friend in LA).

An explosive, vibrant and electrifying Tania Maria concert with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, arranged & conducted by Jörg Achim Keller, except on "Come With Me" and "Dear Dee Vee," which were scored by Torsten Maab. The brilliant Brazilian composer/singer/pianist sounds great as... always!
Highlights: "Valeu," "Confusion," "It's Only Love," and the instrumentals "Chuleta" and "Eruption." Recorded live on February 9, 2007 at Centralstation Darmstadt, in Germany, and released now in 2010, it's a massive set, full of energy, superb vocal performances, great solos, and high vibes, one of the Top 5 albums in Tania Maria's discography. Hope to see a video issue of this concert someday!
An extraordinary expatriated talent, acclaimed in the USA, Europe and Asia, she remains ignored in her native country.

Produced & engineered by Jason Seizer at Pirouet Studios in Munich, it's the best album ever recorded by Bill Carrothers as a leader, as well as one of the best piano jazz trio projects released in this new millenium. Bill goes to another plateau with this CD, a joyful & haunting adventure through tunes associated with Clifford Brown.
Sometimes dreamy, sometimes eloquent, he turns every and each track into a masterpiece performance with the notable contributions of bassist Drew Gress & drummer Bill Stewart.
The entire album is fantastic & unpredictable, but it's impossible to not pay special attention to the way he re-constructs Clifford's title track "Joy Spring," a bebop anthem transformed in a haunting ballad; to the tango-ish arrangement of Victor Young's "Delilah"; and the flamboyant delicacy of Richie Powell's "Gertrude's Bounce" that makes the listener's heart bounce during 7 minutes and 2 seconds.
Other highlights: the unexpected marching band groove on Duke Jordan's "Jordu," the fiery treatment to Clifford's "Daahoud" (great solos by Gress & Stewart), the up-tempo take on "Powell's Prances" that takes my breath away, and the 2 superb ballad performances of Richie Powell's "Time" (a showcase for Drew Gress' wondrous tone) and Benny Golson's "I Remember Clifford" (featuring Stewart's brushwork). Highly recommended.

R.I.P.: "AdLib"

The final AdLib issue was printed in May, after 37 years. It was monthly published by Swing Journal Co. Ltd. - the same company that has already announced that they will also stop the publication of Japan's jazz bible, the "Swing Journal" magazine (the last number will be the July issue, on sale mid-June). SJ is opening an "official blog," though.
