Monty Alexander Celebrates the
Music of Jamaica & Trinidad

Jazz at Lincoln Center brought Jamaican jazz pianist Monty Alexander together with an ensemble of musicians from islands and cultures neighboring Jamaica to celebrate the intersection of Caribbean music with jazz. This exciting concert focused on Trinidadian calypso and highlighted authentic Jamaican mento and included a singing group featuring banjo, guitar, rumba box and maracas.
Mr. Alexander (piano, music director), Hassan Shakur (bass) and Herlin Riley (drums); accompanied by special guests, including David “Happy” Williams (acoustic bass/vocals), Desi Jones (drums/percussion), Joseph Bennett (shaker and vocals), Albert Morgan (rumba box), Etienne Charles (trumpet), Clifton Anderson (trombone), Dean Fraser (alto sax), Charles Dougherty (sax), Carlton James a.k.a. “Blackie” (banjo and vocals), Pluto Shervington (guitar and vocals) and “Designer” (vocals).
The original concert was taped for BET J on March 8, 2008 in The Allen Room, Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.
