Eliane Elias: "Cross Currents" (Denon) 1988
Featuring Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette, Peter Erskine, Barry Finnerty, Cafe et al.
Eliane Elias' insuperable masterpice includes superb renditions of Bud Powell's "Hallucinations", Victor Young's "Beautiful Love" and Charles Mingus' "Peggy's Blue Skylight" and "East Coastin'", plus many brilliant originals by Elias herself such as "Impulsive", "Cross Currents" and "Campari & Soda".
There's also "Coming and Going", a lovely tune written by Eliane's grandmother, Egle Chiarelli, in 1927, when she was 12 years old. The vocal choir on that track includes Lucy Elias (Eliane's mother), Randy Brecker (Eliane's husband at that time as well as the album co-producer) and Elza Silva (Eliane's maid in NY).
The gorgeous pictures by Dimas Schittini complete "the experience".
