Wax Poetics Japan Compiled Series - Sample & Breaks of CTI Records" (CTI/King) 2010

Original sessions produced by Creed Taylor & engineered by Rudy Van Gelder, except "Ziggidy Zag," produced by Bob James & engineered by Phil Schier.
Wax Poetics Team: Masashi Funatsu (who also wrote the liner notes, printed as usual only in Japanese...), Akihiro Motonishi, Takahito Kohno, Joshua Dunn & Ken Hidaka.

Joe Farrell's massive title track from his (never reissued on CD...) "Canned Funk" album begins "Sample & Breaks Of CTI Records" (CTI KICJ603). Cut in 1974 by Farrell's power pianoless quintet (Joe Beck on guitar, Herb Bushler on bass, Jimmy Madison on drums and Ray Mantilla on percussion), it's by far the most interesting track in this compilation, completed by a selection of predictable, although great, choices. The list includes Deodato ("Rhapsody in Blue," "September 13"), Milt Jackson ("Olinga"), Hubert Laws ("I Had A Dream"), Stanley Turrentine ("Sister Sanctified"), Gabor Szabo ("Ziggidy Zag") and the favorites of the Wax Poetics guys: Idris Muhammad ("Power of Soul"), Hank Crawford ("Wildflower"), Johnny Hammond (his famous version of Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady," often used as his featured number on the CTI All Stars concerts) and Esther Phillips ("That's All Right With Me".)

The CD front cover brings photos of Bob James, Weldon Irvine, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham and Cornell Dupree (pictured by renowned photographer Chuck Stewart) from the recording sessions, at Van Gelder Studios, of Stanley Turrentine's "Cherry" album, which yielded the track "Sister Sanctified" included in this CD compilation, but already previously available on Arnaldo DeSouteiro's "CTI: Acid Jazz Grooves" CD, released back in January 1997. Another track from "CTI Acid Jazz Grooves" reprised here is Freddie Hubbard's version of Thom Bell-Linda Creed's r&b hit ballad "People Make The World Go Round."

ん？ 設立40周年？ おかしいぞ、敏腕プロデューサー、クリード・テイラーがA&Mレコード内にCTIを設立したのは、たしか1967年だったはず・・・そうか！ 完全にA&M傘下から独立したのが1970年、つまり「Creed Taylor Issue」から「Creed Taylor Incorporated」に正式名称が変わってから、今年でちょうど40周年ということなんですね！

そんなメモリアル・イヤーに相応しく、今年はCTI関連盤が続々。2007年の”ガチ”設立40周年時をはるかに超える盛り上がりを見せております。ブラック・ミュージック・ファンの現代聖書「Wax Poetics」誌の日本支部「Wax Poetics Japan」編集部がテーマ毎にCTI音源をコンパイルした日本独自企画盤『Wax Poetics Japan Compiled Series』においては、「Dance Classics」、「Soulful Vocals」、「Sample & Breaks」の3タイトル同時リリースという熱の入りよう。さらに3タイトル同時購入者にはもれなく、同社特製オリジナル7インチが特典として付くそうですので、ご購入はお早めに！　また、1971年のカリフォルニア・コンサート以来実に38年ぶりの再集結となったCTIオールスターズが、昨年モントルー・ジャズ・フェスティヴァルで行なったライヴ音源（CD、DVD、Blu-ray各種リリース）、そして、その71年カリフォルニア・コンサートの2枚組豪華盤（輸入盤のみ）も登場ということで、今秋から師走にかけてのジャズ～ブラック・ミュージック・シーンは、「CTI祭り」の様相を呈しそうな気配がぷんぷん。
