R.I.P.: Dudu Caribé

I am schocked and saddened with the sudden death of guitarist and composer Dudu Caribé at age 39. I had the honor to work with him in several occasions between 1998 and 2001, a period of time on which he was touring worldwide with Milton Nascimento and Gilberto Gil, having also recorded with many Brazilian stars of different styles - from samba masters Almir Guineto and Dudu Nobre to fusion keyboardist Marcos Resende to Guilherme Isnard's rock band Zero.

Dudu also took part of Jorge Pescara's "Grooves in the Temple" album, which was produced by Arnaldo DeSouteiro for the JSR (Jazz Station Records) label. On his brilliant liner notes for the CD, jazz historian Doug Payne wrote about the track "Power of Soul": "Note the incandescent solos of vocalist Ithamara Koorax (whose amazing voice evokes here the sound of a guitar), keyboardist Paula Faour (whose debut solo album, Cool Bossa Struttin' was released with critical acclaim by JSR/King Records in December 2002) doing a ferocious mini-Moog solo, and guitarist Dudú Caribé (who spars with Pescara in homage to Hendrix and whose fuzz guitar early on also suggests Joe Beck’s performance on Idris Muhammad’s version)."
