Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates The Abyssinian Baptist Church's bicentennial with Abyssinian 200: A Celebration, a special mass and world premiere of music written by Wynton Marsalis for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Abyssinian Baptist Church Choir. Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III delivers a rousing sermon in this special concert event, which supremely melds jazz and gospel traditions.

Abyssinian 200: A Celebration is part of Jazz at Lincoln Center's Gospel Festival. On April 11 & 12, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m. in The Allen Room, pianist/music director Eric Reed, Gerald Cannon (bass), Willie Jones III (drums) and Stacy Dillard (saxophone) will be joined by Edwin Hawkins to perform selections from the contemporary, gospel and jazz traditions alongside Hawkins’ pianist Lawrence Johnson and backup vocalists.
