One of the best kept secrets in jazz, and one of my all-time favorite guitarists, Jack Wilkins will appear in New York @ the Jazz Standard (116 East 27th St), for his "70th Birthday Celebration!" Next Tuesday, July 1st, presented by the great jazz impresario Charles Carlini. Two sets at 7:30pm & 9:30pm, with very special guests Gene Bertoncini, Larry Coryell, John Abercrombie, Howard Alden, Vic Juris, Joe Diorio and Jimmy Bruno.
I'll start to celebrate right now, by listening to the two superb albums that Wilkins recorded for CTI -- "Captain Blued" and "Opal", featuring my friends Phil Woods, Harvie Swartz, Akira Tana, Ted Moore and the late Albert Dailey -- as well as to his equally brilliant sessions with Bertoncini, Michael Brecker, Hubert Laws, Chet Baker and Jim Hall. A real "event" not to be missed!
