Regarded as one of the best bass player in Rio de Janeiro's crowded music scene, José Santa Roza died yesterday, December 3, 2009.
Also active as producer and arranger, he recorded and/or played with such artists as Marcio Montarroyos, Ricardo Silveira, Victor Biglione, Idriss Boudrioua, João Nogueira, Paulo César Pinheiro, Silvio César, Leo Jaime, Amy Duncan and many others.
In the early 2000s, he took part of J.T. Meirelles' Copa 5 group, which had been reformed by the saxophonist and performed at the "TIM Festival 2003" released on DVD by the Som Livre label. Santa Roza also recorded many soundtracks for Brazil's Globo TV network.
Currently, besides active as co-leader of the JANS quartet (alongside Jorge Roberto, Nilton Valle and Anderson Moraes), he was a member of the groups led by trumpeter Guilherme Dias Gomes, pianists Philippe Baden Powell and Charles Rio, and guitarist Ary Piassarollo.
