DVD of the Day - "A Tribute to Edith Piaf"

DVD of the Day
"A Tribute to Edith Piaf: Live at Montreux 2004" (Eagle Vision/ST2) 2008
Edith Piaf is generally regarded as France's greatest ever popular singer and was the most popular French performer from the 30s right through to her early death in 1963. She has remained hugely influential ever since and this concert captured live at Montreux on July 11, 2004 is a testament to her enduring popularity even 40 years after her death. Backed by a quartet led by pianist & musical director Baptiste Trotignan - with Marc Berthoumieux on accordion, Remi Vignolo on acoustic bass and France's top jazz drummer Andre Ceccarelli - Michael von der Heide, Régine (yes, the "Queen of Paris night" who ran a club in Rio where I used to go very often in the late 70s, at the Meridien Hotel in Copacabana), Catherine Ringer, Ute Lemper, Barbara Morrison and Angélique Kidjo pay homage to "The Little Sparrow" as Piaf was affectionately known.
The first guest, Ute Lemper, should have been the last one to perform. She steals the show with an extraordinary rendition of "L'Accordéoniste".
