Allyn Ferguson Dies at 85; Prolific Hollywood Composer
by Dennis McLellan
Los Angeles Times, June 29, 2010
Allyn Ferguson, a prolific, Emmy-winning composer who co-wrote the themes for the popular TV series "Charlie's Angels" and "Barney Miller," has died. He was 85.
Ferguson, who also was known as an arranger and conductor, died of natural causes June 23 at his home in Westlake Village, said his daughter, Jill Ferguson.
Teamed with composer Jack Elliott in a television scoring partnership, Ferguson and Elliott wrote the themes for "Charlie's Angels" and "Barney Miller" in the 1970s as well as scores for episodes of numerous other series, including "The Rookies," "Starsky and Hutch," "Police Story" and "Banacek."
On his own in the 1970s and '80s, Ferguson scored many of producer Norman Rosemont's TV adaptations of literary classics such as "A Tale of Two Cities," "The Count of Monte Cristo," "Les Miserables" and "Camille," for which Ferguson won an Emmy in 1985.
He received five other Emmy nominations for music composition in the '80s -- for "Ivanhoe," "Master of the Game," "The Last Days of Patton," "April Morning" and "Pancho Barnes."
"Allyn will always be remembered as the co-writer of two iconic television themes," said Jon Burlingame, author of "TV's Biggest Hits," a 1996 book that chronicles the history of television themes. "But I think his real strength was in writing large-scale orchestral scores for Rosemont.
"He'd often write lavish orchestral scores, some very swashbuckling in nature, that helped to set the mood and place the viewer in the proper period. It was great stuff; he was really good at this."
During the '70s and '80s, Ferguson served stints as conductor and musical co-director for the Oscar, Emmy and Grammy award telecasts. He also received an Emmy nomination for music direction for "The American Movie Awards" in 1982 and shared an Emmy nomination for music direction for "The Kennedy Center Honors" in 1986.
Ferguson and Elliott, who wrote the scores for the movies "Support Your Local Gunfighter" and "Get to Know Your Rabbit," also co-founded the Orchestra, an 84-piece ensemble that debuted at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in 1979.
"Its primary thrust was a combination of symphonic and jazz-influenced pieces they were commissioning," said Burlingame. "I think the Orchestra was a grand experiment, and I'm sorry it didn't last."
Ferguson, who moved to Hollywood in 1958, was an arranger for artists including Sarah Vaughan, Stan Kenton and Andy Williams and wrote the arrangements for the Count Basie Orchestra's 1998 Grammy-winning "Count Plays Duke" album. He also was a musical director for Johnny Mathis, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Julie Andrews and others.
In the late '80s, Ferguson assumed a leadership role in the Grove School of Music in Van Nuys, where he launched a film music composition course. The school went out of business in the early '90s.
Born in San Jose on Oct. 18, 1924, Ferguson started taking trumpet lessons and at age 4 and began studying piano seriously at 7.
He became a P-38 pilot during World War II but the war ended before he saw action. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music from San Jose State University and studied music with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood in Massachusetts.
While working toward a doctorate at Stanford University in the early 1950s, he formed the Chamber Jazz Sextet, which performed in the Bay Area and recorded three albums, including one with original jazz works accompanying poems by Kenneth Patchen.
In addition to his daughter, Ferguson is survived by his wife, Joline; his sons, Dan and Todd; his sister, Marilyn Dallman; and six grandchildren.
A celebration of his life is pending.

My favorite LA-based DJ, Tatiana Fontes, loves to play there. Also expect name DJs from Europe and a 24-hour modern diner concept attached (dubbed “Sweet Love Hangover”) that clubbers can hit before, after or during their evening for some alcohol-absorbing comfort food. Sleek and hyper-modern, the interior decoration is young, energetic and decadent, the kind of place you might stumble across Kim Kardashian or Joe Francis on your way past the velvet rope.
The sound system is state of the art and was designed by Dan Agne from Sound Investments (known for work at Cielo New York, Vanguard, and Beta Nightclub in Denver). The lighting system at the Fox was designed by Steve Lieberman of SJ Lighting, known for his work at Tao Las Vegas, Cherry Las Vegas, and Crobar New York. The interior is spacious, with a vaulted ceiling, muted lighting and white leather stools and couches strewn about...

Obama - "Should we add your name in support of Wall St. reform?"
"Dear Arnaldo:
According to our records, you are currently living in California's 3oth Congressional District.
After more than seven months of work and a prolonged effort by Organizing for America supporters, House and Senate leaders just agreed on a final Wall Street reform bill. They're moving fast toward final votes.
This is the final hurdle to enacting the toughest financial reforms since the Great Depression -- and delivering another historic accomplishment for the American people.
These votes in the House and Senate will come down to the wire. Lobbyists for the big banks will be knocking down the doors on Capitol Hill this week, so we're going all-in over the next few days to fight back -- and that starts with a massive public display of support for the bill.
Many in Congress are fighting hard alongside President Obama for Wall Street reform -- they need to hear our support. Others are standing with the special interests -- and it's even more important that they hear from us too.
Add your name now to the growing list of OFA supporters who are standing with the President on Wall Street reform.
Reform doesn't just help create a more stable economy, it greatly improves the daily lives of all American families. Here are five of the most important benefits of the bill:
1) Reform forces credit card and mortgage companies to play by the rules. No more hidden fees or pages of fine print.
2) Families who are hoping to buy a home or pay for college are put on a level playing field with lenders. Reform ensures they'll get the information they need presented clearly and concisely so they can make good decisions. The same goes for small businesses and community banks who play fair and deserve to see their businesses grow.
3) The legislation cracks down on predatory lenders looking to mislead people into taking on irresponsible debt.
4) Wall Street reform establishes an independent agency -- the Consumer Financial Protection Agency -- whose sole job is to protect consumers and enforce the new consumer financial protections, which would be the strongest ever enacted.
5) Finally, American taxpayers will never again be asked to bail out the big banks that are "too big to fail." Let's be absolutely clear about this, no matter what our opponents in Congress say.
But these changes will only happen if the President can sign it into law. We need to get the bill to him.
Stand with the President in support of this crucial reform:

R.I.P.: Benny Powell
(born March 13, 1926 in New Orleans, Louisiana;
died June 26, 2010 in New York, NY).
Although best known for his 12-year tenure (1951-63) with Count Basie, and for his eight-bar contribution to the Count's all-time hit, “April in Paris,” Benny Powell - who passed away on Saturday while recovering from back surgery - also recorded with such names as Hubert Laws, Duke Pearson, Lionel Hampton, J.J. Johnson, Quincy Jones, Artie Butler, Tony Bennett, Herbie Mann, Ray Charles, Cleo Laine, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis, Duke Ellington, John Carter, Jimmy Heath, David "Fathead" Newman, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine, Herbie Hancock, Ernestine Anderson, Stanley Turrentine, Bill Henderson, Ry Cooder, Michel Colombier, Dr. John, Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Roland Kirk, Hank Crawford, Freddie Hubbard, B.B. King, Ben E. King, Earth Wind & Fire, Tamiko Jones, Sammy Davis, Jr. and countless others.
A highly versatile musician, he was very active in the 60s and 70s as a first-call session player, as well as performing on Broadway, TV (he was a member of the band of Merv Griffin's show) and movie soundtracks.
He also developed a prolific 25-year collaboration with Randy Weston and recorded on Moacir Santos' second album for Blue Note, "Saudade" (1974).
As a leader, he released three solo albums: "Coast to Coast" (Trident, 1982), "The Gift of Love" (Faith, 2003) and "Nextep" (Origin, 2008).
"Benny Powell is a journeyman trombonist whose bold sound bridges bebop and swing. His work employs the vocal color of great swing trombonists and the technical fluidity of bop practitioners. Powell plays both tenor trombone and the bigger-bored bass trombone broadening the colors he brings to an ensemble. Known exclusively as a sideman, he's made valuable contributions to several notable bands, ranging from the rocking swing of Lionel Hampton to the roots-informed avant-garde of John Carter," David Dupont wrote in the All Music Guide.

Francisco Aguabella was a legendary figure in the contemporary Afro-Cuban Lucumi tradition.
A native of Matanzas, Cuba, Aguabella gained notice for his secular drumming in Havana nightclub bands, and for his mastery of the complex styles of Afro-Cuban ceremonial drumming. He was a world class artist, who performed with such legends as Tito Puente, Carlos Santana, Poncho Sanchez, Mongo Santamario, Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. In 1992, he received a National Endowment of The Arts Fellowship in the area of folk arts, and has been lauded by the cities of San Francisco, Miami, and Los Angeles.
He is also the subject of a documentary by filmmaker Les Blank with Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Studios. Lovers of Latin jazz will not want to miss the legacy Aquabella's impact on latin jazz music.

Aguabella's family has asked that Francisco's legacy will live on by continuing to present his hundreds of compositions carried on by his touring band.

Artistic, talented, dedicated - these are but three of the many attributes that describe pianist, composer and bandleader Cecilia Coleman. A native of Long Beach, CA and resident of New York, Coleman began to play piano at age 5 and at age 15 began to study jazz piano. She is a potent pianist capable of performances that are both exciting and moving. She has developed into an exceptional composer whose distinctive, varied pieces reflect where jazz has been and where it is going.
Coleman has led her own group since 1990 when she formed a trio with bassist Eric Von Essen and drummer Kendall Kay. In 1993 her quintet was formed. In addition to numerous club appearances such as Jax Bar & Grill (Glendale), the infamous Chadney's (Burbank) and the Jazz Bakery (Culver City), Coleman has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Telluride Jazz Festival and the New Mexico Jazz Workshop. With the Quintet, Coleman has gone on to substantial acclaim in the Los Angeles Jazz scene and beyond.
She is currently the jazz piano instructor at her Alma-mater CSU Long Beach where she teaches one week a month during the school year. On the east coast she is the accompanist for the Modern Dance Center of Westchester in Bronxville. She maintains her regular working quintet on the west coast, which includes such noteworthy musicians as Steve Huffsteter, Jerry Pinter, Christoph Luty and Thomas White.
She has six CD's out as a leader: "The Impostor", "Higher Standards", "Home", "Young & Foolish" , "Words of Wisdom" and the very recently released “Images”. She is also on three recordings of The American Jazz Institute headed by Mark Masters which feature Lee Konitz, Billy Harper, Jack Montrose, Ray Drummond, Tim Hagans and Gary Smulyan plus many more.

CD of the Day - "Monica Mancini: I've Loved These Days"
CD of the Day
Monica Mancini: "I've Loved These Days" (Concord) 2010
More than a decade after launching her solo career, vocalist Monica Mancini is finally getting to do the album she's always wanted to. "This is my music," says Monica of "I've Loved These Days," a gorgeously crafted collection of songs by artists who helped shape the soundtrack of her formative years, including Lennon & McCartney, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Jackson Browne, Harry Nilsson, Brian Wilson and Janis Ian.
"This is the music that resonates more than anything else for me," she explains. "I love singing standards, and there is something that I respond to with all those wonderful old songs, but these songs are vital to me. These are my standards." Intriguingly, "I've Loved These Days" goes a step beyond mere reverence by actually incorporating many of Monica's musical heroes.
Joining Monica on this new disc are original composers Jackson Browne offering guitar and vocal accompaniment on "These Days," Brian Wilson and the multi- Grammy winning vocal group Take 6 contributing vocals and arranging on "God Only Knows," Stevie Wonder harmonically dueting on "Blame It on the Sun," and the Rascals' Felix Cavaliere providing B-3 organ accompaniment on his classic "How Can I Be Sure." Says Monica, "It was thrilling that these guys came back to reconnect and rework songs that helped put them on the map as artists.
Als Gäste präsentiert Monica Mancini unter anderem Jackson Browne (“These Days”), den Ex-Beach-Boy Brian Wilson und das Vokalensemble Take 6 (“God Only Knows”), Stevie Wonder (“Blame It On the Sun”) und den Young-Rascals-Organisten Felix Cavaliere (“How Can I Be Sure?”).

"Dream Life", Fingerprint's new CD, due Aug 10
Fingerprints, known as "one of the best kept music secrets in the South," releases their long anticipated fifth CD, "Dream Life," on the Pacific Coast Jazz label. This project follows the enormous popularity of their last release, "DNA," and proves this contemporary jazz band deserves greater national and international recognition. On "Dream Life" the band delivers exceptional grooves, emotional energy and some of the most soulful covers around. According to bassist and leader Frederick Nichelson, "Some of our work is comparable to groups like The Crusaders and Pieces of a Dream, but we are careful to stay away from being over produced and seldom use midi-sequencing. We want to be known as a "real band" whose recognized sound of soul, blues and jazz have evolved through over twenty years of live performance."
With four accomplished CDs to date ("Fingerprints," "Reunion Live," "Summertime Music" and "DNA"), the distinguished sound of Fingerprints has been shaped through the years by its long-term members: Frederick Nichelson (bass), Claud Hardrick (saxophone, flute, vocals), Tim Jones (lead vocals, percussion), Kennan Wylie (drums, percussion), Jordache Grant (keyboards), and Robert Lacroix (guitar). Along with electrifying performances on "Dream Life," the CD features surprise guest artists like Bernard Wright, Mel Scott, Todd Parsnow, Shelley Carol, Larry Davis, John Gordan, and Richard Smith. The songs on "Dream Life" are appealing originals by band members or musical guests along with three cover tunes written by jazz icon Herbie Hancock ("Tell Me A Bedtime Story"), Grammy award winning songwriter Diane Warren ("For You I Will") and a classic jazz standard by the great Tadd Dameron ("Lady Bird").
However, what is most special about this CD is the fourth track, "I Am A Man" with inspiring vocals from Tim Jones. Memphis native Frederick Nichelson was honored to co-write the title song with Stax/Volt artist Deanie Parker for the documentary, "I Am A Man" (www.iamamanthemovie.com). Produced by the Memphis Tourism Foundation in partnership with Running Pony Productions and Old Bridge Media, the all-Memphis team also included Switch Creative, Electraphonic Recording and was written by Memphians David Appleby, Allison Graham and Steven Ross. The documentary is the story of one man, Elmore Nickelberry, and his fight for dignity, justice, and the power of the human spirit. Surrounded by the soul music that helped make Memphis famous, Mr. Nickleberry tells an uplifting life story of endurance and character as he is joined by the men and women of the 1968 sanitation strike whose courageous stand helped change the world forever. Dr. Martin Luther King supported their plight by saying to the public that "our society must come to respect the sanitation worker."
For many years standing room-only crowds have been lining up to hear the perfect blend of jazz and R&B by the Fingerprints musicians at venues and music festivals throughout the South and Southwest. Band members have recorded and toured in the past with highly respected artists such as Harry Connick, Jr., Marion Meadows, Ronnie Laws, Freddie Revel, Tom Browne, Miles Jaye, Wayman Tisdale, Roy Machado, Toni Redd, Brad Leali, Ardina Lockhart, Shelley Carrol and Kyle Turner. With a performance schedule of over 100 shows per year, Fingerprints still manages to find time to reach out to help the youth in the Memphis community through donated concerts to civic and non-profit organizations. "It is an important "mission" for the group to be able to share our music for the benefit of people," commented Nichelson. "Dream Life is a testament to the good fortune and pleasure we have to be making a living at our music while inspiring others to do the same. We express that enthusiasm every time we perform or record and hope that people feel the same joy we do."

Anna Ly interviewed in the June issue of "Brazil com Z" magazine
http://www.revistabcz.com/noticias/?p=5167
Contou-me a história da língua portuguesa e acabou me “contaminando”. Mas aí eu me perguntei: e a influência do tupi-guarani?

Wendell Logan, Composer of Jazz and Concert Music, Dies at 69
By MARGALIT FOX - NY Times
Published: June 22, 2010
Wendell Logan, a composer of jazz and concert music who more than two decades ago founded the jazz department at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, long a bastion of high-level classical training, died on June 15 in Cleveland. He was 69 and lived in Oberlin, Ohio.
Professor Logan died after a short illness, Marci Janas, a conservatory spokeswoman, said. At his death he was chairman of the jazz studies department and professor of African-American music at the conservatory, which is part of Oberlin College.
Though Oberlin had been turning out world-caliber classical soloists, conductors and orchestral performers for generations, jazz there had long been an extracurricular subject at best.
Professor Logan, who played soprano saxophone and trumpet, joined the faculty in 1973 and began offering jazz classes soon afterward. But it was not until 1989 that he was able to make jazz studies a full-fledged major, in which students can earn a bachelor of music.
Besides composing many jazz works, Professor Logan wrote concert music, a discipline that black composers have historically been discouraged from pursuing. His compositional style integrated elements of Modernism, European classicism and African-American musical traditions like jazz, blues and gospel into a seamless whole.
Among his best-known concert works are “Doxology Opera: The Doxy Canticles” (2001), a gritty sung drama of race and morality with a libretto by Paul Carter Harrison, and “Runagate, Runagate” (1989), a setting of Robert E. Hayden’s poem about a fugitive slave.
In 1990 “Runagate, Runagate,” sung by the tenor William Brown, was featured in a program by the Black Music Repertory Ensemble, a Chicago group, at Alice Tully Hall in New York.
Reviewing the performance in The New York Times, Allan Kozinn wrote, “Mr. Logan’s music — a volatile mixture of angularity, harmonic haziness and expressive dissonance tempered with openly tonal sections — adds a palpable dramatic dimension to the narrative.”
Professor Logan’s jazz compositions include “Remembrances.” Reviewing a performance of that work by piano, bass and drums for The Times last year, Ben Ratliff called it “a stylish and mysterious ballad.”
Wendell Morris Logan was born on Nov. 24, 1940, in Thomson, Ga. His first musical studies were with his father, an amateur alto saxophonist.
He attended Florida A&M University, a historically black institution, on a football scholarship, graduating in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in music. He earned a master’s in music from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, in 1964 and a Ph.D. in music theory and composition from the University of Iowa in 1968.
Before joining the Oberlin faculty, Professor Logan taught at Florida A&M, Ball State and Western Illinois Universities. His honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1991; his music has been recorded by Orion and other labels.
Professor Logan is survived by his wife, the former Bettye Reese, whom he married in 1962; two children, Wendell M. Jr. and Felicia Logan; two brothers, Alvin and Howard; and four grandchildren.
In interviews over the years, Professor Logan made clear that for him and his colleagues, the rubric “black composer” was a decidedly mixed blessing.
“I’m not particularly in favor of it,” he told The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, as the paper was then known, in 1994. “I think our music should be evaluated and played alongside everything else, and programmed with Beethoven and other contemporary composers. No one is asking for a special day: ‘Here’s the day for black American composers.’ That’s kind of demeaning. But it’s better than nothing.”

The George Garzone Quartet featuring Joe Cohn Perform at Rue 57, Thursday, June 24
"I'm not the master of the sax, George Garzone is." - Michael Brecker
Saxophonist George Garzone makes his debut with guitarist Joe Cohn at Rue 57, 60 West 57th Street, in New York on Thursday, June 24 from 8 pm - 11:30 pm. No cover charge. For information call (212) 307-5656.
A powerful tenor saxophonist whose adventurous flights with his longtime band the Fringe have made him a legend in the Boston area, George Garzone has spent most of his life as a jazz educator. In addition, Garzone has guested in many situations, touring Europe with Jamaaladeen Tacuma and gigging with Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano, Jack DeJohnette, Rachel Z, and John Patitucci, among others.
Joe Cohn, the son of the legendary saxophonist Al Cohn, is one of the today's most creative guitarists - melodically quick witted, harmonically advanced and relentlessly swinging. He has performed with father Al Cohn, Freddy Cole, Bob Mover, Nick Brignola, Artie Shaw, Zoot Sims, Buddy DeFranco, Al Grey, Warren Chiasson, and Carmine Leggio among others.
