Art Pepper's "The Croydon Concert" coming out today!
Volume III of "Unreleased Art" series,
released by Widow's Taste Label on May 30
2-CD Set Features Art's "Comeback Band":
Milcho Leviev, Bob Magnusson, Carl Burnett
At Fairfield Hall, Croydon, England, in May of 1981, Art Pepper appeared with the quartet that had returned him to music. Together, they delivered to loyal and savvy British fans a dazzling performance of originals and bebop classics.
Volume III: The Croydon Concert is the first release by Laurie Pepper's Widow's Taste Records featuring the rhythm section that made up the Art Pepper Quartet from 1978 through most of 1981. They were indispensable to the alto saxophonist's triumphant return to the scene at the end of his life and functioned as both engine and anchor during much of that time. John S. Wilson praised them in the New York Times, saying they made Art's "innate rhythmic drive even more buoyant" and referring to Bob Magnusson as "fabulously fast-fingered." Critic Gary Giddins, in The Village Voice, said Bob's "sure time and rich tone in the bottom register complemented Pepper's frequently ethereal gambits" and praised Carl Burnett's "chatty responsiveness." Musician and critic Jon Hendricks called Milcho Leviev "a most marvelous pianist, a real joy. He plays with beauty and passion."
After his last long imprisonment in San Quentin during the 1960s, Art found reentry into music almost impossible. Thin-skinned to begin with, he became increasingly paranoid, hesitant to even try to work with some of the musicians he admired most. But this band of profoundly gifted jazzmen made him feel safe. These were not "safe" players, but instead challenged and provoked him to continue to develop his gifts and evolve as an artist.
(Carl Burnett, Bob Magnusson, Milcho Leviev & Art Pepper)
The Croydon recording was sent last year to Laurie Pepper, Art's widow, by a European fan who believed this particular music was too good to languish in the archives of collectors. Laurie agreed with him so thoroughly that she changed all her plans. She decided to make this concert the third in her label's critically acclaimed series of previously unreleased Art Pepper performances.
Reviewers have responded enthusiastically to the two previous releases. Volume I from this series, another two-disc set, is The Abashiri Concert, recorded in Japan in 1981. Volume II is The Last Concert, recorded at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in 1982, documenting Art's last performance just weeks before his death:
"Jazz in the era of the heroic statement. Excellent." --Ben Ratliff, New York Times
"Pepper blowing blues and ballads with a shivering intensity, as if each song recounted his own dreams and disappointments." --Fred Kaplan, New York Times
"All but unprecedented. Both soul-searing and sentimental." --Will Friedwald, New York Sun

Jazz Station review:
"The Croydon Concert" is destined to the same acclaim. What a quartet! All musicians in peak form, including Pepper. The sound quality is pretty good for a "bootleg" tape, improved by the excellent mastering work of engineer Wayne Peet. Laurie Pepper's liner notes are luminous as usual, providing behind the scenes revelations that are always attractive for jazz historians. Besides, she writes with fluency and verve, sounding like an old friend sharing intimate secrets with us.
Art Pepper... well, the incomparable alto-master plays with grace, melodic sophistication and passion. The group interaction is fantastic. Bob Magnusson's fat and silky bass tone is a pleasure to listen to. This must be drummer Carl Burnett's best performance ever documented on record. And the Bulgarian genius Milcho Leviev is in splendid form at the piano, proving to be the perfect sideman and the ideal soloist to Pepper (he was not "possessed" that night, thanks God!)
The program includes nine extended tracks - some of them rounding 20 minutes. But you'll never feel tired or bored. Time flies! My personal favorites are "Ophelia", "Patricia", the haunting Gordon Jenkins' ballad "Goodbye", a latin-tinged version of Franz Lehar's "Yours is My Heart Alone", "Dedication" and the tour-de-force "Make A List" (Make A Wish). According to Laurie's notes, "Dedicated" was "a total surprise, he had never played it before and never did again," she writes. "It's a minor blues, a quasi-Coltrane tune". The document of such a marvelous night already belongs to the list of the best "special releases" of the year. It's the kind of CD that deserves a 5,000 star-rating.

The Widow Knows
The aims of Widow's Taste are to introduce truly unreleased and unheard music by Art Pepper to people who love him and want to hear him -- and to introduce him to people who have had only a limited experience with jazz and have never even imagined his unique brand of soul, swing, and loveliness.
In line with the second aim, and before the end of the year, Laurie plans to release a music video culled from her ongoing work-in-progress movie project, Straight Life: The Stories of Art Pepper. The project is based on the Peppers' book, Straight Life (Perseus Books). The video is a re-creation of the legendary Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section recording session, a beguiling combination of live action and animation. (Chapters of the movie can be seen at http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001pNM0PWeen74ltR0PiAGAU9FYOZNX2e4geNc8HmknqSHWXMwkQkugSi4sG52r78x3JqZBqKQeEDL0bzAM85CVZBt4JuRcjqx1y415vycxiaMurPKWqcbWRw==.)
Next year, Widow's Taste will release a 3-disc set, The Art History Project. Disc 1 will be Early Art with Kenton, Shorty Rogers, and at the Lighthouse. Disc 2 is The Middle Period: Never-heard, over-the-top, outside but wildly swinging stuff recorded at Contemporary in 1962 and '67 but never released. That was the stubborn breakthrough that made it possible for Art to play the way he did at the Village Vanguard in 1977. Disc 3 will be Reconciliation: The best of Art in his "post-Vanguard" period.
Laurie Pepper has said that Volume III: The Croydon Concert will give the world a chance to hear Art and his "comeback band" at their tightest, at the top of their form playing Art's music exactly as he wished it to be heard. And the really overwhelming response of fans and critics to Volumes I and II has increased her commitment to keeping Art's music alive by continuing to release the best of Art Pepper's unheard performances.

Joao Gilberto: A god in New York
It's really crazy, but the master plays basically the same songs for 50 years . . . only guitar & voice . . . dressed in his banker's suit . . . hardly talks every song is 2-3 minutes . . . but, like my friend Seth Rothstein says, "EACH TIME IS AN EPIPHANY!"
He played for 2 magical hours straight and got standing ovations when he entered the stage, when he ended the concert and after the last encore.
Joao's rhythm seems even more sophisticated & more complex each day . . . absolutely more abstract and unpredictable... like the Japanese audience had the privilege to noticed in 2003, 2004 and 2006. Really beyond words.
I was wondering if as he ages, since he's becoming more eccentric in life, this is so beautifully reflected in his sense of time, rhythm, phrasing. He feels even looser and freer in his approach, slowing down the tempos, even on the sambas ("Doralice") and ballads ("Estate").
"Something new captivated me . . . What a great feeling I had . . . It was like seeing another genius inside a genius," Seth points out. And I must add: Joao never ceases to amaze me either!

Haden has explored diverse streams of American popular music with both his acclaimed Quartet West, as well as on such recent collections as 2002's inventive alliance with Michael Brecker. Haden was invited to establish the jazz studies program at California Institute of the Arts in 1982, and has earned countless honors from around the globe, including the Los Angeles Jazz Society prize, two Grammy Awards (and multiple nominations), myriad Down Beat Reader's and Critic's Poll prizes, a Guggenheim fellowship, four NEA grants for composition, France's Grand Prix Du Disque (Charles Cros) Award, Japan's SWING Journal Gold, Silver and Bronze awards, and the Montreal Jazz Festivals Miles Davis Award.

'The Sermon On Exposition Boulevard', the new album by Rickie Lee Jones and her first for New West Records, is a beauty--soul-satisfying and sonically unique. What will certainly be most striking to some fans is that it rocks harder than any album the two-time Grammy Award winner has ever recorded. And yet, this music transcends all of its historical touchstones, taking the elements and creating something that sounds totally new--full of grace, soul and adventurous sonic textures. What's ultimately just as fascinating as the remarkable music, however, is that all 13 songs are inspired by the real words and ideas of one Jesus Christ. The recording began in a painter's loft on an abandoned industrial street in mid-L.A in the summer of '05. Lee Cantelon, who can best be described as a modern renaissance man, originally conceived the project as a lo-fi, low budget spoken word undertaking, and the initial plan was to recruit friends and associates--from punk icon Mike Watt to a homeless man he encountered every day--to do the talking. The project changed directions, though, when Rickie Lee showed up to record her part. Instead of reciting the text, she stunned everyone in the studio by improvising an entire song to a track she had never heard. "Nobody Knows My Name" is that first recording. So began the inspired musical and textural improvisations that would become 'The Sermon On Exposition Boulevard', an intuitive and beautiful collection.

"Bill Frisell plays the guitar like Miles Davis played the trumpet: in the hands of such radical thinkers, their instruments simply become different animals. And, like Davis, Frisell loves to have a lot of legroom when he improvises--the space that terrifies others quickens his blood." --The New Yorker
"Bill Frisell is the Clark Kent of the electric guitar. Soft-spoken and self-effacing in conversation, he apparently breathes in lungfuls of raw fire when he straps on his (guitar)...His music is not what is typically called jazz, though it turns on improvisation; it's not rock'n roll; and it sure ain't that tired dinosaur called fusion. In one of the biggest leaps of imagination since the Yardbirds and Jimi Hendrix, Frisell coaxes and slams his hovering split-toned ax into shapes of things to come...But besides being a guitar genius, he's turned into a terrific songwriter. Like Monk, Frisell's harmonic and melodic ideas form a succinct, seamless mesh with outer sonic and rhythmic ideas about his ax." --Spin

He has released many successful albums under a number of aliases, including BFC, Psyche, Paperclip People, 69, Designer Music and Innerzone Orchestra. As Innerzone Orchestra he released "Bug in The Bassbin" in 1992, a track that many regard as being a key influence in the then-evolving sound of drum and bass. Carl also created his own record label, "Planet E", which has released records by well known techno and house artists like Kevin Saunderson, Alton Miller and Moodymann. Craig served as artistic director for the widely successful Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000 and 2001.

With the 2008 release of her first full-length album, Simone On Simone (a big band tribute to her mother, Nina Simone, produced by famed jazz musician and arranger Bob Belden), music lovers worldwide discovered the vocal dynamism that live audiences have witnessed for over a decade. Blessed with a rich vocal range, an innate skill for lyrical interpretation and a soul-deep understanding of music as a means of healing, empowerment and celebration, Simone is very much her mother's daughter, and she is also most assuredly a multi-talented artist in her own right.

More than anything else, Poncho Sanchez is a storyteller. And, as leader of the most popular Latin jazz group in the world today, it's his congas and seasoned ensemble that do the talking. Live in concert or on recordings, they spin vivacious tales that pay homage to the glories of a half-century tradition that was born when Afro-Cuban rhythms merged with bebop. One-on-one, the Chicano conguero is equally expressive, recounting in vivid detail the encounters, friendships, and passions that have contributed to his remarkable career as a bandleader and recording artist. Behind the choice of every song, album title and guest artist, there's a story Poncho Sanchez delights in telling.

On the fifth album of his career, appropriately titled Cinco De MOWO!, Adam Dorn a.k.a. Mocean Worker has assembled the quintessential feel-good summer record. Shedding the expectations of the electronica scene with which he was often associated at the outset of his career, Dorn began to embrace his jazz and funk influences, while keeping the focus on crafting songs with undeniable hooks. Dorn also further explored sounds and flavors from different periods in music's history, re-conceptualizing them for the 21st century. Subtle improvisations emerge within tight arrangements, grooves appear inside of grooves, samples of samples are re-imagined and mingle comfortably among some of the world’s finest living, breathing jazz musicians. To tour behind the Cinco De MOWO!, Adam Dorn has transformed Mocean Worker into a red hot six piece funk machine, featuring some of New York City's most revered musicians. Assembled by Dorn to bring to life the "breakbeat jazz" stylings of the Mocean Worker studio albums, the group has already made a number of high profile performances, including Bumbershoot and Treasure Island festivals, opening slots for Amp Fiddler, Koop, Trombone Shorty and The Benevento-Russo Duo, and a residency at NYC underground tastemaker venue Nublu.
DJ Logic’s growing catalog of recordings is more likely to be filed under jazz and hip-hop than techno. This is no small accomplishment, and his popularity is as much a reflection of his musicianship as it is of his diplomacy, and his skill as an electronic-music ambassador. DJ Logic combines textures and weaves them into something completely new. He adds tabla beats to electrified blues riffs and salsa grooves. He attacks hard rock and punk with a jazz sensibility. This diversity of musical settings has become Logic's hallmark - his music is a recipe for jazz, with the ingredients as Bronx as hip-hop. His role as a producer keeps him at the top of his game, fulfilling countless requests for remixes and collaborations with jazz musicians like Graham Haynes, Don Byron, John Scofield, Joshua Redman and Christian McBride; jam bands like Medeski, Martin & Wood, the Allman Brothers and Phish; and hip-hop masterminds like Prince Paul, Ursula Rucker, and Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson from the Roots.

From her name, to her music, to her mission, to the circuitous path that brought her to legendary Verve Records for her third album, Lost and Found, Ledisi (pronounced led-duh-see and adopted from the word that means "to bring forth" in the Yoruba language of Nigeria)is a galvanizing, all-natural wonder. This year, during a gala Songwriters' Hall of Fame ceremony, an A-list of show business veterans could hardly wait for Ledisi's rapturous rendition of "Unchained Melody" to end before lavishing her with thunderous applause. In 2006, before a rapt contingent of music business mavens at the Urban Network conference, Ledisi - wedged between a hip hop act and a tweety bird - brought an audience of astute professionals to its feet with an amazing a cappella performance of the Beatles' "Yesterday." Then there was the PBS televised tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, "We All Love Ella," where no less than Quincy Jones introduced her to the stage (adopting her as his goddaughter) where she proceeded to belt out a show-stealing version of "Blues in the Night" that she had previously recorded for the companion CD with the great Phil Ramone producing.

Since forming Soulive in 1999, guitarist Eric Krasno, organist Neal Evans and drummer Alan Evans have developed a reputation as one of the most sought after instrumental soul-funk trios around, a hard-touring live act that’s thrown down everywhere from small rock clubs to opening arena shows for the Rolling Stones. Yet an interesting thing happened when the three veteran musicians hooked up to begin work on the follow-up to 2005’s critically acclaimed Break Out. Featuring appearances from soul-music luminaries like Chaka Khan, Ivan Neville and Corey Glover, Break Out found the trio pushing its music in a less improvised, more song-based direction. But the band craved bigger change. Soulive invited singer Toussaint—the versatile Boston-based vocalist of reggae outfit the China Band—to join the group on a permanent basis. After nearly a decade as a trio, Soulive is now a quartet. No Place Like Soul, Soulive’s sixth studio full-length, is the band’s sharpest, most mature songwriting to date, with thoughtful nods to funk, soul, rock, hip-hop, reggae and old-school R&B. Throughout the expansive, wide-ranging 13-track disc, Soulive navigate this new sonic terrain with the expert abilities they’ve honed by logging countless hours on stages across the world. Guys who know what they’re doing but retain an appetite for the unknown, they’ve managed to produce that rarest of musical accomplishments: a record that sounds classic and forward-thinking at the same time.
Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged from the 90s. The son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff, he was exposed at an early age to a variety of musics and instruments and began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to his primary instrument, the tenor saxophone. The early influences of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Cannonball Adderley and his father, Dewey Redman, as well as The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince, The Police and Led Zeppelin drew Joshua more deeply into music, but academics were always his first priority, and he never seriously considered becoming a professional musician. In 1991 Redman graduated from Harvard summa cum laude with a B.A. in Social Studies. He was accepted to Yale Law School, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year. Redman accepted an invitation to move to Brooklyn with old friends (former students at the Berklee College of Music), and immediately found himself immersed in the New York jazz scene. In November of that year, five months after moving to New York, Redman was named the winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. Redman was quickly signed by Warner Bros. Records and issued his first, self-titled album in the spring of 1993, which earned Redman the first of two Grammy nominations.

R.I.P.: Titi Winterstein
(b: 25.Oct.1956, Freiburg/Germany;
d: 13.Jun.2008, Offenburg/Germany)
The violinist Titi Winterstein died June 13th at the age of only 51 in Offenburg, Germany after a long and serious illness. Winterstein had played in the band of the guitarist Häns'sche Weiss in the 1970s, and he had later performed with stars like Stéphane Grappelli and Yehudi Menuhin. "In several films and TV documentaries about the life of German Sinti and Roma he kept alive the memory of his family which nearly completely fell victim to the Nazi pogroms," writes Wolfgang Sandner in his Obituary for the Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung.

RELEASE NEW CD: Looking Forward To Remembering The Future
SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB APPEARANCE OCTOBER 14
STANLEY SAGOV & The Remembering The Future Jazz Band is a bunch of grizzled jazz veterans who never really grew up, still love to play the music and want to share that experience in the moment of creation! This great jazz group will appear at Scullers Jazz Club in the DoubleTree Guest Suites Hotel [400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston] on Tuesday, October 14, at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tickets at $15.00 can be purchased on line at www.ticketweb.com or by calling: 617-562-4131.
Featuring Stanley Sagov on piano, John Lockwood on acoustic bass, Tommy Lockett on electric bass, Bob Moses on drums, Stan Strickland on sax, flute and vocals and Mike Peipman on trumpet, the band will make its debut at Scullers while celebrating a fabulous new double CD entitled Looking Forward To Remembering The Future.
This music is jazz, jazz and more jazz . . . not smooth, but funky, driving, intricate and emotional!
Looking Forward To Remembering The Future is available on CD Baby and elsewhere for $15; the new double-disc set will be discounted to just $10 with a ticket stub after the show at Scullers.
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Dr. Stanley Sagov has always been crazy about jazz-based musics. Sagov, who also plays guitar, violin, oboe, bass and drums is known primarily as a keyboardist with extraordinary talents. A family practice physician by day with a full-time medical practice in Greater Boston, Massachusetts, his evenings and weekends are spent with his jazz, his family and his photography.
After graduating from medical school in South Africa, Dr. Sagov moved to New York City where he had the opportunity to perform with many of his musical heroes . . . among them Booker Ervin, Howard McGhee, Jimmy Garrison, Billy Hart, Elvin Jones, Roland Kirk, Ted Curson, Sheila Jordan, Bob Moses and many other wonderful musicians.
In 1970, he moved to Boston where he attended the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music; he graduated with a degree in jazz piano and oboe. His mentors while at NEC included Jaki Byard, George Russell, Thad Jones, John Lewis, Kenny Dorham, Bob Brookmeyer, Frank Foster, Gerry Mulligan, Cecil McBee, Buell Neidlinger, Tom McKinley and others.
Dr. Sagov found that he hated touring, but loved the music, so in addition to his full time medical livelihood, he now produces his music at home and independently markets it on the internet.

DVD of the Day - "Santana plays Blues at Montreux"
Carlos Santana: "Plays Blues at Montreux 2004" (EagleVision/ST2) 2008
CDs of the Day - "Amanda Carr"
Featuring: Herb Pomeroy, Bevan Manson, John Lockwood, George Schuller, Rick Considine, Alexander Romunal
“ Amanda Carr, a true jazz singer in a time of wannabes. . . she sings and swings with the unaffected confidence of a genuine jazz improviser. Unlike some of the present alleged jazz vocalists, Ms. Carr does not try to imitate a horn. She is an authentic musician in the front line with her longtime colleagues on "Soon" . . .” NAT HENTOFF, from the Wall Street Journal article, 9/5/07.
Well, I took notice to Amanda Carr's career after that story written by Nat Hentoff (a heavyweight jazz historian) a propos of Carr's latest release, "Soon". If Nat praises a singer so much, she must be good! For my surprise, the lady was excellent! Since I've listened to her first track ever, I instantly became a fan.
Now, all her albums are not "stocked" in my collection of 30,000-plus CD titles. They're always at hand since I've been returning to them many times since they provide me with multiple listening pleasures. Every time I am back home after a long trip, and I need to savour "great delightful music", I go back to a special place in my listening place, where people like Bill Evans and Milt Jackson are always top choices. Amanda's albums have been added to that special list since almost a year ago.
I should thank her (and Nat!) for giving so much pleasure to my soul and ears. It’s a really a joy to listen to her albums.
“Carr Toons”, her debut date, is de-lovely! In all aspects: from the front cover photo (congrats to Ms. Moccia!) to the beautiful back cover photo. From the album title to the graphic design. First-class repertoire, excellent musicians and, back to the clichezized word, “lovely” arrangements, lovely interpretations, lovely and very instructive liner notes.
It’s such an excellent album that it’s hard to believe that it Mrs. Carr's very first CD…and originally conceived as a demo!
(btw, the sound quality is superior to “Soon”, specially the sound of the drums, specially concerning the use of brushes, but it’s another matter).
The opening track , It Ain't The Meat It's The Motion, was a novelty to me, I had never heard that “lovely” song before. Legrand’s “Watch What Happens” is an old favorite of mine, a song I learned to love through Tony Bennett. Btw, 2 years ago, when Tony performed in Rio, he once again opened the show with “WWH”, like he often does.
Then, after the piano solo, Amanda sounds really “superb” when re-constructing the melody through a fantastic phrasing. I’ll not go into details, but all the intervals and inflections are outstanding. And, the most important thing: they sound natural, very spontaneous, and it’s much better than when you listen to someone who seems to have studied and rehearsed those phrasings many times before the recording. The same applies to the wordless vocals during the tag.
Amanda deeply touched my heart with “We’ll Be Together Again”, another longtime favorite. That one I learned to love thanks to Mark Murphy. Carr's rendition is luminous, including a sense of true hope that misses in most recordings of that haunting ballad. Her version is haunting but luminous hopeful, like it must be if the singer understands the lyrics meaning (most don’t do in the current scene…) The muted trumpet solo by Herb Pomeroy is a very special “plus”, and I also enjoy Carr's flights to the lower registers. Her expressiveness is amazing.
“Maybe”! Congrats, Mrs. Songwriter! It’s a…lovely bossa, propelled by a delicious beat.
The string section sometimes sounds like a string quartet, in other tunes as an octet, but on “Maybe” it looks like a larger section, or a small real section augmented by a synthesizer.
Shearing’s “Lullaby of Birdland” evokes memories of my childhood. My father had many 10-inch LPs of the Shearing quintet, and I got some of them (like “Martini Time”) on CD. I was fortunate also to see George Shearing performing that song alive, when I attended a concert he gave in Rio de Janeiro (at "Sala Cecilia Meirelles") back in 77 or 78, backed only by Brian Torff’s bass. It’s a never tiring song, at least for my taste, although I have heard hundreds of recordings. Oh, I loved Amanda's scat and the way she calms down things after Pomeroy’s solo, singing in a lower volume. Simple lines but very effective, never affected.
“Scotch and Soda”. Very charming song, specially sung by you. My favorite recording, till then, was the one by Manhattan Transfer. The way the pianist ingeniously quotes “Tea for Two” during Carr's solo is another plus.
The lyrics refer to “dry martini” and I can’t listen to “Mean To Me” without remembering of Paul Desmond’s dry-martini sax sound when he recorded that song on the “Pure Desmond” album. Amanda keeps a similarly seductive mid-tempo groove. And that’s a big compliment. Once again her scat sounds lovely (see how many times I need to use this recurrent word?)
Beautiful string arrangement on “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Just another spring.” What a great idea to use the voice of Amanda's mother’s as a child intro to the last song. The effect is stunning.
Now I need to re-listen to the other albums. But I’m sure I’ll be returning often to “Carr Toons”.
Amanda Carr: "Soon" (OS Music) 2007
featuring: John Wilkins, Bronek Suchanek, Kenny Hadley, Arnie Krakowsky, Rick Hammett, Jeff Galindo
Voted by this blog as one of the "best jazz vocal albums" released in 2007. I've also included Amanda among the top 3 female singers of the year.
I've been listening a lot to "Soon" - specially to "If You Could See Me Now", "Flamingo" and "Inutil Paisagem". Always late at night, savoring a good red wine. They really put me in a great mood! There's also a take on Jorge Ben's "Mas Que Nada".Not to mention "Where Can I Go Without You".
Amanda herself told me the story behind it:
"Where Can I Go Without You" was written by Peggy Lee (and Victor Young, who I believe committed suicide in Los Angeles later in life). It's a beauitful song that brings tears to a lot of eyes, including mine when I sing it. I was on-air the other night on WGBH (great NPR station with state-of-the-art new studios) and me and my group did an hour, including that song. My voice always quivers with emotion at the end," she reveals.
Amanda Carr: "Tender Trap" (Original Music Service) 2004
Featuring: John Wilkins, Bronek Suchanek, Kenny Hadley, Dick Johnson, Rick Hammett, Jerry Vejmola
My personal favorite tracks are "I'll Close My Eyes", "What We Were Asking For", "I'll Never Be The Same", "Old Devil Moon", "What Am I Here For" and "No More Blues" (Jon Hendricks' controversial English lyrics to Jobim's "Chega de Saudade")
In a 4-star rave review of "Tender Trap", renowned jazz critic Ken Deyden wrote:
“With so many female vocalists releasing new jazz CDs in a given year, it is extremely difficult to grab one's attention; Amanda Carr's CD, though released by a small label, has the ingredients necessary to do so......Amanda Carr deserves greater attention in the jazz world."
Featuring: Luigi Martinale, Nicola Muresu, Paolo Franciscone
