The Jazzschool's Fall 2007 Concert Series, which coincides with the 10th anniversary of the school's founding in September 1997, was announced today by Jazzschool Executive Director Susan Muscarella. "In addition to the Downtown Berkeley Jazz Festival, which begins today and runs for five days," says Muscarella, "we have put together an incredibly diverse group of headliners for our fall series. These talented artists exemplify the Jazzschool's mission to celebrate jazz and related styles of music from around the world. We are thrilled to present them to our students and to the community at large."
The fall concert series gets underway on Saturday 9/22 with a performance by guitarist Bobby Broom and his trio, in his Bay Area debut as a leader. Broom, longtime member of Sonny Rollins's band as well as a distinguished jazz educator based in Chicago, will also be teaching a master class at the school that afternoon.
On 9/30, saxophonist Robert Stewart performs a Tribute to John Coltrane, the first of several "Tribute to the Masters" concerts planned for the fall and beyond. Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, and Sonny Rollins are among the jazz saxophone legends who'll be honored in the coming months.
The new Vocal Frontiers Series kicks off with a 10/14 concert by Inga Swearingen and her pianist Bill Peterson, followed by Theo Bleckmann and the Refuge Trio on 10/27 and, on 12/1, the breathtaking a cappella trio WeBe3 (left), with Rhiannon, Joey Blake, and David Worm. Other vocalists appearing at the Jazzschool this fall are Faye Carol (10/6), Margie Baker (11/3), and Ed Reed (11/11).
The Jazzschool 10th Anniversary Celebration will take place at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Jack London Square on Tuesday 10/9. Featured artists are Madeline Eastman and the Randy Porter Trio; Wayne Wallace and Rhythm 'n Rhyme; Mark Levine and the Latin Tinge; and Marcos Silva and Intersection.
Among the other artists set to perform this fall at the Jazzschool Nightclub are pianist Frank Martin, with Abraham Laboriel and Alex Acuna (9/23); John Handy (10/7); the Sheldon Brown Group (10/19); drummer Eddie Marshall and Holy Mischief (10/20); and the Dave Liebman Group (11/4). Jazzschool Executive Director Susan Muscarella and her trio (Robb Fisher, bass; Mike Clark, drums) will play the annual Sunday afternoon Halloween celebration concert 10/28.
As always, the quarter will close out with a week of Jazzschool student performances, scheduled for 12/10-16.
All of the shows, unless otherwise noted, take place in the Jazzschool Nightclub, Hardymon Hall. The Jazzcaffè, immediately adjacent to the performance space, serves dinner and drinks. Doors open one hour prior to performance; open seating is limited and on a first-come-first-served basis.
Tickets are available online (www.jazzschool.inhousetickets.com); by phone (toll-free 1-866-384-3060) Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm; or in person at the school, Monday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm, Sundays 10 am to 3 pm.
The Jazzschool (www.jazzschool.com) and Nightclub are located in the historic Kress Building at 2087 Addison Street (at Shattuck), in the heart of the Downtown Berkeley Arts District.
