Diana Krall live in Oslo tonight, Sept 22

Diana Krall will be performing tonight, September 22, 7:30pm, at the Oslo Konserthus in Norway.
The "Konserthus" is Oslo’s main Concert Hall. From the opening in 1977 up to today the place has etablished itself as one of the most important institutions in Norwegian musical and cultural life. We therefore wish to present a good offer with high quality. As many people as possible should meet with the best within their musical favourite genres in spectacular surroundings. Oslo Concert Hall passes on those special moments that become constantly more important to more and more people today.

The Main Hall has capacity for 1404 seats, in addition to the possibility of up to 226 seats in the choir terrace (behind the stage). The stage is multifunctional, with modern hydraulically controlled stage elements that can be raised and lowered. A light rig and a modern sound system provide optimal conditions for all types of arrangements. The main hall also has the country’s largest organ.
The Small Hall has a maximum capacity of 266 seats in amphi, but can also be transformed into, among other things, a large room with a flat floor. The hall has a complete sound and light system as well as audiovisual equipment, and functions well both as seminar and conference premises and as chamber concert hall.
Vestibule areas in the Concert Hall can be used as exhibition areas and have a capacity of serving up to 1400 people, spread on the different areas. A catering company takes care of all service.

Mai 2009 in Madrid gab. Neben drei Songs aus dem Repertoire ihres aktuellen Bossa-Nova-Albums (namentlich “The Boy From Ipanema”, “Quiet Nights” und “You’re My Thrill”) spielte sie bei dieser Gelegenheit auch die Titel “I Love Being Here With You”, “Exactly Like You”, “I Don’t Know Enough About You” und “Let’s Fall In Love” ein.

Hilary Gardner and her Quartet "West 73rd" live in NY tonight

You’ve loved her singing with the New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble! Now jazz vocalist Hilary Gardner is headlining her own Quartet “West 73rd” at Jazz Tuesdays tonight, September 22 in the John Birks Gillespie Auditorium in the New York City Baha'i Center at 53 East 11th Street (between University Place & Broadway). There are 2 shows at 8:00 and 9:30 p.m. Hilary will be joined by Frank Ponzio on Piano, Pete Donovan on Bass, and Vito Lesczak on Drums.

The quartet calls itself “West 73rd” in a nod to where their musical collaboration began: in the studio of pianist Frank Ponzio on West 73rd Street in Manhattan. The members of West 73rd draw their inspiration from the nonstop energy pulsing through the streets of New York City. Their resulting music is as sophisticated, dynamic and ever-changing as new York itself. Their debut recording “A Song About Forever” explores Kurt Weill’s music from a jazz perspective, while incorporating the classical, theatrical and global influences that continue to make Weill’s music compelling to listeners from all walks of life. “A Song About Forever” was a 2008 MAC Award nominee for Best Jazz Recording.

Classically trained singer Hilary Gardner was raised in Alaska and lived in Italy and Seattle before relocating to New York in 2003. Hilary has performed with many of New York's finest musicians, including Mike Longo, Valery Ponomarev, Arturo O'Farrill, Bob Dorough, Joel Frahm, Joe Cohn, Larry Fuller, Bill Anschell, Adam Rafferty, and Don Braden. Hilary performed with trumpet star Valery Ponomarev at the Tchaikovsky Hall at the Moscow Philharmonic in Moscow, Russia in 2005. She is featured on the NY State of the Art Jazz Ensemble's third CD, "Oasis." Mike Longo, jazz great and longtime Dizzy Gillespie associate, calls Hilary "an extraordinary singer with an enormous talent."

Admission is 15.00, $10.00 for students.
Tickets will be sold at the door, or call 212-222-5159 for reservations and information.

The blue Concert Hall at Hötorget (the Haymarket) in central Stockholm is one of Sweden’s great architectural masterpieces. Opened in 1926, it was designed by architect Ivar Tengbom during a period of expansion in the capital. The Concert Hall was built to house what is now the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and to serve as an arena for the Nobel Prize Ceremony and other such formal occasions.

The Stockholm Concert Society was formed in 1902 to give regular musical performances in Stockholm. At first a loose collective of musicians, it went on to become a permanent ensemble in 1914. The orchestra only had places like the rather dilapidated old Auditorium at Norra Bantorget in which to give its concerts, and the need for its own concert hall grew ever-pressing.

An accumulated pot of money and a lottery provided enough funding for the announcement of an architecture competition, which was eventually won by the young professor of architecture Ivar Tengbom. His grand vision was to erect a classical Greek temple to the honour of music facing the market stalls of Hötorget and amidst the rather shabby and drab, squat little buildings that surround it. Building work on the Concert Hall began in 1923, and by 1926, during an epoch instilled with the democratic ideal and stylistically inspired by the cradle of this political dream – Athens – Stockholm obtained what turned out to be its best example of neoclassical architecture. Stockholm was evolving from a town into a city.

Since its inauguration, the Concert Hall has been the home of the orchestra originally known as the Stockholm Concert Society, then the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and finally, since the early 1990s, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 1926 it has also hosted the Nobel Prize Ceremony every 10 December; the City Hall, where the Nobel Banquet is currently held, was built at the same time.

Monika Herzig discovers "Peace on Earth" is more than a dream

World traveler and pianist Monika Herzig releases worldwide distribution of "Peace on Earth" November 3, 2009 under the Owl Studios label.

The journey to musical success wasn't easy for Monika Herzig. Armed with just a suitcase, guitar and a cup full of dreams, Monika and her guitarist Peter Kienle, immigrated to the US from Germany on a one-year student exchange program in August 1988. Virtually penniless, the full-time adventurers figured if they could just make it to America (the "land of jazz," as Monika called it) they'd be able to have a fair chance at a career in the music they loved. With one way tickets, they crossed their fingers, boarded the plane and hoped for the best.

Monika and Peter began raising funds by baking bread for friends. After a lot of hard work, their dreams paid off in the form of accolades and significant concert dates to include the prestigious Down Beat Magazine Award for her composition "Let's Fool One." Monika would also be awarded her Doctorate in Music Education and Jazz Studies from Indiana University, where she is presently a faculty member.

As a touring jazz artist, Monika Herzig has performed at many prestigious jazz clubs and festivals, such as the Indy Jazz Fest, Cleveland's Nighttown, Louisville's Jazz Factory, the W.C.Handy Festival, Jazz in July in Bloomington and Cincinnati, Columbus' Jazz & Rib Fest, to name just a few. Groups under her leadership have toured Germany, opened for acts such as Tower of Power, Sting, the Dixie Dregs, Yes, and more.

In addition to numerous recordings with the fusion group BeebleBrox, she has produced four albums as leader of the Monika Herzig Acoustic Project. What Have you Gone and Done was voted one of the 10 best recordings of 2007 by indymusic.com. Her latest recording, "Peace on Earth", released locally in 2008 will be formally released for worldwide distribution November 2009 under the Owl Studios label.

From spiritual "Go Tell It on the Mountain" to "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" by John Lennon, "Peace on Earth" is a seasonal mixture that infuses traditional acoustic jazz with contemporary sensibilities. Featuring a sprinkling of originals by Herzig, "Peace on Earth" interweaves a pleasing tapestry that echoes familiarity, while being technically engaging enough to entice the listener to delve deeper. By resisting the urge to record a full album of covers and expanding the arrangements beyond the standard seasonal fare, Peace on Earth yields enough swing to please even the most finicky jazz connoisseur.

The artistic merit of "Peace on Earth" expands beyond the arrangements. Unification of the human spirit is at the central core of the work. "All of us are human beings with the same aims. We are trying to find a place on earth that makes us happy and trying to find a way to live together in a meaningful way. The holidays are probably the time when we get closest to those goals . . . but we should live that way all year long," said Herzig.

For more information on this artist, please visit www.monikaherzig.com or http://blog.owlstudios.com/blog/monika-herzig

Peace on Earth will be available for purchase November 3, 2009 at www.owlstudios.com and outlets worldwide.

As a percussionist, he's L.A.'s answer to Mongo Santamario; as a band leader, Poncho Sanchez' crisp arrangements, Cubop flair and informed jazz sensibility bear comparison to Machito's.
Afro-Cuban music and jazz have been among Sanchez's obsessions since his pre-teen years. Born in Laredo, Texas on October 30, 1951 but raised in L.A., he was the youngest of eleven kids - some of them hardcore jazz enthusiasts, and all of them devoted salseros.

For Sanchez, it wasn't hard to be exposed to such Latin greats as Tito Rodriguez, Tito Puente, Machito, Celia Cruz, and Ray Barretto (along with heavy doses of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown and Thelonious Monk) on a daily basis. Mambo, son, cha-cha, rhumba, guaracha - Sanchez quickly absorbed all of these Afro-Cuban styles (which fall under the umbrella term "salsa") as well as the art of jazz improvisation.

One of Sanchez's primary inspirations was the late vibist Cal Tjader, who did so much to popularize Latin jazz in the 1950s. After idolizing Tjader most of his life, a 23-year-old Sanchez ended up joining his band in 1975--and would remain with him until his death in Manila in the Philippines on May 5, 1982, at the age of 56.

Diana Krall - "Le Monde" review

http://www.lemonde.fr/culture/article/2009/09/16/diana-krall-lenteur-perlee-et-chorus-endiables_1241266_3246.html#ens_id=1241350

Critique

World Piano Summit Presents Junior Mance @ Church of the Covenant

World Piano Summit Presents
Jazz Piano Titan Junior Mance
In Rare Solo Piano Concert
Thursday October 8th at 7:30 p.m.
Celebrating His 7th Decade In Jazz

"He plays with gathering emotional intensity that involves a good sense of dynamics and above all, a feeling for drama that can heighten the tension-release structure that is at the core of most effective self-expression in any field." --Nat Hentoff

"Junior Mance is something else . . . So complete is his psychological command over his instrument that very few of his fellows approach him in this area." --DownBeat Magazine

worldpianosummit.com proudly presents Junior Mance @ 81 in a rare solo concert at Boston’s Church of the Covenant, [67 Newbury Street, Boston, MA 02116] on Thursday, October 8 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets at $25 and $20 for students are on sale now at http://www.worldpianosummit.com. For more information call: 484-560-6319.

At age 81, Junior Mance can look back on an amazing life in jazz.

Mance was born on October 10, 1928 and began playing the piano in 1932 – at the age of five. He started playing professionally during his early teens and in 1947 Junior joined Gene Ammons’ band which also began his recording career. He joined Lester Young in 1949 for almost two years and rejoined Ammons several months in 1951 before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Mance served in the 36th Army Band at Fort Knox, Kentucky along with Julian “Cannonball” Adderley.

After his discharge from the Army in 1953, Junior Mance became part of the house rhythm section at the Bee Hive Jazz Club in Chicago for a year and accompanied jazz greats such as Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Sonny Stitt and many others.

In 1954 Junior joined and toured with Dinah Washington. Among the numerous recordings he made with her, there are two that really stand out in his memory: Dinah Jams and Jam Session. These two live albums feature Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Clark Terry, Maynard Ferguson, Herb Geller, Harold Land, Keter Betts, George Morrow, Richie Powell and Junior.

In 1956 Junior reunited with Cannonball Adderley, becoming a member of Cannonball’s first organized working band. The band did a series of recordings on Mercury Records.

Junior joined Dizzy Gillespie’s band in 1958, a period Junior considers one of the highlights of his career. Besides the joy and fun of playing with Dizzy, he remembers this period as a great learning experience in musicianship, showmanship and just about everything related to the business of music.

In 1961, Junior formed his first trio following the release of his first recording as a leader, Junior on Verve Records. In between gigs with his trio he played and recorded with the Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis/Johnny Griffin Quintet. With his trio he also accompanied singer Joe Williams in l963/64.

Beginning in the late seventies, Junior started performing with bassist Marty Rivera. Junior and Marty spent over 20 years as a duo performing both nationally and internationally. When they were at home in New York, Junior and Marty were often found performing either at the Village Gate or at Zinno’s.

In 1988, Junior became a member of the faculty of the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at the New School University in New York City. He teaches classes in blues, coaches blues ensembles, gives private individual lessons on piano and helps students in the development of their career in playing jazz.

During the 1990s Junior became a part of a very elite group called “100 Gold Fingers.” This is a group that consists of ten outstanding jazz pianists and tours Japan every other year. On various tours the group has included such piano greats as Hank Jones, John Lewis, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Barron, Ray Bryant, Roger Kellaway, Gene Harris, Marion McPartland, Barry Harris, Toshiko Akioshi, Lynn Arriale, Cyrus Chestnut, Benny Green, Duke Jordan, Jo Anne Brackeen, Monty Alexander, Dave McKenna, Renee Rosnes, Mulgrew Miller, Harold Mabern and others.

Despite nearly seven decades of contributions to jazz music, it wasn’t until October 5th – 7th of 2000 that Junior Mance made his solo piano debut at Lincoln Center at the Kaplan Penthouse.

To celebrate his 81st birthday, Junior Mance comes to Boston’s Church of the Covenant in a rare solo piano concert.

Diana Krall live @ Laeiszhalle Hamburg, tonight

(DK during her concert @ the Santa Barbara Bowl; thx to Sergio Benitez)

Diana Krall performs tonight, at the Laeiszhalle Hamburg, the first in a new series of concerts of her "Quiet Nights World Tour 2009," dedicated to promote not only the "Quiet Nights" CD (Verve) as well as the "Live in Rio" (Eagle/ST2) DVD. Tomorrow early she leaves to Paris, for three sold-out nights at the Olympia (where the marvelous "Live in Paris" DVD was recorded). Diana will later return to Germany for concerts in Cologne (at the Lanxess Arena on October 18), Frankfurt (at the Alte Oper Frankfurt on Oct 20), and Munich (Philharmonie Hall, on November 11).
The impressive Laeiszhalle Hamburg was opened in 1908 with a grant by the well-known shipbuilder, Carl Heinrich Laeisz. This “neo-baroque” concert hall was known as the “Musikhalle” (music hall) for many decades and recently renamed after its benefactor. The Laeiszhalle Hamburg is one of the most beautiful concert halls in Germany, so you need to get your tickets to the DK concert at the Laeiszhalle Hamburg as soon as you can before they are gone! The Laeiszhalle hosts the Ensemble Resonanz and the Sounding Museum Hamburg, with the latter offering a collection of instruments to look at - and to even try out!

Pamela Rose to Release "Wild Women of Song" CD in October

Singer Pamela Rose Explores the Work of Women Songwriters on Her New CD "Wild Women of Song: Great Gal Composers of the Jazz Era"

Rose's Fifth CD on Her Three Handed Records Label
Due for Release October 13

CD Release Event at Yoshi's San Francisco
Sunday, November 1
************
For the last five years, San Francisco jazz and blues vocalist Pamela Rose has been investigating the music of women songwriters -- particularly those of the Tin Pan Alley and classic blues eras -- in her dynamic live shows. Both she and her audiences responded strongly to the repertoire, but Rose was surprised to realize that "even though we love and revere these songs, we don't know the writers' names."

Determined to bring these women and their contributions into the limelight, Pamela Rose has recorded a revelatory new CD that will not only spread the word about these writers, but should prove to be a breakthrough work for Rose herself.

Wild Women of Song: Great Gal Composers of the Jazz Era is the captivating new CD that reports back on Rose's musical explorations and captures her sumptuous alto in peak form. The new disc, her fifth, will be released October 13 on her own label, Three Handed Records, and was produced by Grammy Award winner Leslie Ann Jones. Arrangements were handled by saxophonist/pianist Matt Catingub, former musical director for the jazz singer (and his mother) Mavis Rivers.

Songwriting was the primary occupation of seven of the CD's "gal composers": Bernice Petkere (represented here by "Close Your Eyes"), Doris Fisher ("That Ole Devil Called Love," recorded in 1946 by Billie Holiday), Dana Suesse ("My Silent Love"), lyricist Dorothy Fields ("A Fine Romance," "I'm in the Mood for Love"), Kay Swift ("Can't We Be Friends"), Vee Lawnhurst/Tot Seymour ("And Then Some," a 1935 hit for Ozzie Nelson), and Maria Grever ("What a Diff'rence a Day Made," a big hit in the US by Dinah Washington and later on, in the mid-70s, by Esther Phillips, in a "disco" version that topped the dance charts also all over Europe).

Three of the writers were full-time singers who penned some of their own material -- Peggy Lee ("I Don't Know Enough About You," used by Diana Krall as the final number in all her concerts since the last ten years), Alberta Hunter ("Down Hearted Blues"), and Ida Cox ("Wild Women [Don't Have the Blues"]). And Pamela Rose herself carries the tradition into the present century with three original compositions ("I'm Not Missing You," "Bruised Around the Heart," "If You're So Special"). "The writing process has always fascinated and engaged me," says Rose.

Pamela Rose grew up a block from the Troubadour, the West Hollywood nightclub that was the incubator for L.A.'s early-1970s emerging singer-songwriter scene. "I just about lived there," she recalls, "and witnessed this wonderful explosion when all the singer-songwriters were blooming." She performed her "very emo songs" on amateur nights at the club.

Her first big break came courtesy of Merl Saunders, who hired her for an East Coast tour in 1977. "Merl got me to understand that the key to music is the groove," Pamela says. "He taught me so much about improvising and using the band as your instrument."

Rose continued to work in blues and soul contexts through the 1980s, but after the birth of her daughter (now 20) she started exploring the American Songbook standards she'd heard her mother sing while growing up. Her 1993 album On the Jazzy Side of Blue was nominated for two BAMMIE Awards, and the follow-up, Every Time I'm With You, was critically acclaimed and led to several European tours.

You Could Have It All (2001) was a soul-jazz session featuring B-3 players Wayne De La Cruz and Tony Stead, and Just for a Thrill (2006) launched her musical partnership with guitarist Danny Caron, who co-wrote two of the new CD's originals. (Guitarist Mimi Fox collaborated with Rose on the third.) All of Rose's CDs have been issued on her own imprint, Three Handed Records.

The concept behind Wild Women of Song has thoroughly energized Pamela Rose -- not only as a challenging musical endeavor, but as an ongoing cultural history project. She's created a web site (www.wildwomenofsong.com) filled with fascinating details about the women represented on the disc. And she envisions her CD release show at Yoshi's San Francisco, on Sunday, November 1, as a multimedia event that tells the story of these women through music, visuals, and narrative -- adding new elements to Rose's always-electrifying performances. "This has been by far the most creatively satisfying project I've ever been associated with," she says. "I can't wait to introduce folks to these gals!"

Brooklyn Big Band live @ Gillespie Auditorium, NY, Sept 15

Help us welcome Tim Armacost and Craig Bailey when they bring the Brooklyn Big Band back to "Jazz Tuesdays" tomorrow, September 15 in the Gillespie Auditorium at the New York Baha'i Center at 53 East 11th Street (between University Place & Broadway). There will be 2 shows at 8:00 and 9:30.

Saxophonists Tim Armacost and Craig Bailey formed the Brooklyn Big Band to harness the powerful energy of a core group of musicians who were regulars at Bailey’s Dean Street jam session in the early nineties. Their vision has resulted in an explosive live recording from New York’s famed club, Sweet Rhythm. The co-leaders are committed to presenting new music primarily written and arranged by group members. Performances are marked by an electric mixture of exceptional rhythm section playing, spontaneous creation of compositional elements, and disciplined ensemble work.

The BBB had its first regular engagement in the spring and summer of 2001, playing at Caviar, a new music club near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. One of the early performances was profiled by the WB, New York Television’s channel 11, for its evening newscast. After a hiatus, the group had its second weekly gig at Atlantic Avenue’s Po’k Knockers, for most of the year 2003. The band had its Manhattan debut in the summer of 2004, with two sold out Monday nights at Sweet Rhythm. The success of the Manhattan shows has led to regular performances at Sweet Rhythm. In the summer of 2007, the BBB performed a program of famed producer Teo Macero’s music at Birdland, which became one of the final performances attended by Mr. Macero before his passing at the end of the year.

Admission is 15.00, 10.00 for students.
Tickets will be sold at the door, or call 212-222-5159 for reservations and information.
