Tony Bennett talks about Getz, Sinatra & Picasso

In this fantastic interview for the Vancouver Sun, my dear friend Tony Bennett - thanks to Richard Templar for introducing me to Tony, back in 1980 - talks about the influence of Stan Getz on his phrasing, about Frank Sinatra and also Picasso. I had the opportunity to meet him several times along the years, attended many of his concerts, and even interviewed him for a TV special on the Brazilian Manchete TV network, back in 1985.

Stubbornly Rooted in the Old School
Tony Bennett recalls the days of Frank Sinatra as 'the end of an era of quality music'

In this decade alone, jazz singer Tony Bennett has won seven Grammy Awards, among his career total of 15.

He boasts pridefully that his record label, Columbia, just resigned him to a $10-million dollar contract, noting laughingly: "I'm 83. They usually send us guys out to pasture."

Far from being in the pasture, in recent years Bennett has sung acclaimed duets with such modern stars as k.d. lang, Bono, Paul McCartney, John Legend, Tim McGraw, Christina Aguilera, the Dixie Chicks, Diana Krall and Stevie Wonder, to name but a few.

Nobody can say that Bennett is anything less than relevant. The jazz icon from Astoria, Queens, N.Y. is undeniably successful as a contemporary artist.

And yet, he remains as stubbornly rooted in the old school as one can get.

Without naming names (though he does single out hip hop as an offending genre) Bennett freely admits that he's not a fan of much modern pop music. Throughout this phone interview -- to advance his Canadian tour -- he bemoans the "obsolescent" nature of today's music, insisting that the last great era of popular music was the one he grew up with.

"Frank Sinatra was the end of an era of quality music where everything lasted," Bennett says. Among other influences, he lists Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Art Tatum and Stan Getz.

"That music never dies. It doesn't sound dated. It's timeless, no matter when you play it....

"But a lot of the modern stuff sounds dated from the first minute it's released."

This leads us to Bennett's artistic credo, which he hammers home repeatedly.

"The more far back you go, the more ahead you'll get," he says confidently.

In Bennett's book, you can't go wrong when you study from "the great masters."

That's a motto he applies to his painting career as staunchly as to his singing gig.

Adopting his birth name, Anthony Benedetto, as a painter, Bennett has become an accomplished visual artist over the years with three of his works in Washington D.C.'s Smithsonian.

"Even the great Picasso, 'til the day he died... he always learned from the past," Bennett says. "You learn from the masters. You go back to the primitive artists to find out what colours they used and how they used them. Why did they mix their colours a certain way?"

Art with no respect for tradition is sure to suffer, Bennett maintains.

So, where did modern music lose touch with its all important roots, in Bennett's opinion?

That's a crime the singer lays primarily at the feet of big business.

"[The success] of all the quality artists created huge [record] companies," Bennett explains. "And the money men, the corporation guys... they started telling the artists what to sing. They wanted to make money off something that comes out quick and big. But that stuff is quickly forgotten.... [Suddenly] everybody's doing the same thing and there's no soul in it."

Bennett also feels that popular music lost something special when it spilled over into arenas and stadiums.

"The great artists I admired, they all worked intimately," he says. "We worked in small little nightclubs and from there we went into theatres.... It was a great experience for us." When artists began selling out the Madison Square Gardens of the world, however, things changed, Bennett feels. "Every businessman in the world looked at that and said 'My God, look at how much money we can make.'... It's happening, but it's forgettable. You don't get any intimate experience from that."

But for all his talk about the great artists who inspired him, Bennett stresses that the secret to his success has been in aspiring to a singing style that's all his own.

He's never forgotten the advice one of his teachers passed on to him, when he was studying to be a singer at the famous American Theater Wing in New York City.

Bennett, who grew up impoverished, was able to attend the elite school thanks to the G.I. Bill, passed to aid U.S. veterans who had served in the Second World War. Bennett himself had fought in Germany as an infantryman, an experience he once equated with having "a front-row seat in hell."

But he remains eternally grateful for the opportunity that was opened to him when he attended the school.

"I had a teacher who told me: 'Don't imitate other singers, because you'll always just be one of the chorus,'" recalls Bennett.

Instead, his teacher advised him to imitate the sounds that other musicians were making instrumentally. "She said: 'Listen to what they're doing musically and try to do that with your voice.'

"Stan Getz had this wonderful melodic sound, this honey sound on his saxophone. So I tried to imitate that, and I developed my own style that way."

Over 60 years later, with his career still thriving, that style continues to serve Bennett like a charm.

It's hard to sum that up any better than the man himself does: "In my case," Bennett says, "I'm blessed."

News from Lily Haydn and Alexa Weber Morales

(Lily Haydn)

"Hello Arnaldo,

I hope all is well in your world. I wanted to let you know about a couple of exciting things happening in mine.

After years of being a part of other film composers' musical arsenal, I scored my first film last year. It's called The Horseboy , and it comes out this Friday October 9 in Los Angeles at the Nuart Theater in West LA for one week only, and around the US all this month.

The film is about a family's enchanted quest to heal their son's autism, as they travel from shaman to shaman on horseback in Mongolia. I will be at the Nuart this Friday, opening night at 7:30, and would love to see you there! As you know, independent film lives and dies by word of mouth and local support. Please go see this remarkable film if you are going to see a movie this week.

The music for this came out so beautifully, thanks to my collaboration with guitarist/composer Kim Carroll, and it is NOW AVAILABLE on ITUNES. It's part Ry Cooder, part Crouching Tiger... I love it and would love to share it with you!

In other news, I am working on my new cd, working on another film called The Lightmaker, and just returned from doing a fellowship at the Sundance Film Composers Lab, where I was lucky enough to study with some of the greats, including Harry Gregson Williams, David Newman, and George S. Clinton.

Also, November 1, I will be performing at the Napa Opera House, opening for Bob Wier , as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Global Security Institute (the preeminent NGO focused on Nuclear Disarmament, and on November 6, I will be joining grammy winning composer Matteo Messina and DJ Cut Chemist for Symphony of the Superhero , a concert to benefit Children's Hospital in Seattle, during which a symphony orchestra will be performing some of my music.

Much love and many blessings,
hope to see you soon,
Lili"

"Most autumnal Arnaldo ~

This weekend was a triple-header for Andy y Su Orquesta Callao, and it culminated in a wonderful show at that very San Franciscan institution, the outdoor stage at El Rio, where we enjoyed stellar sound engineering by Frank, rapturous dancers and a genuine rapport on stage. Gone was the in-fighting, the gun-pointing, the hair-pulling and the cat-scratching, replaced by the harmonious energy of a dedicated posse of underpaid performers! Wait, maybe that was the most recent episode of Desperate Housewives. The point is, we felt great and we'd love to see more of you!

With that in mind, I thought I'd let you know where I'll be during this very busy week! Please see below for some dates that might interest you...

Still kicking,
Alexa"

Tom Braxton's "Endless Highway" comes out tomorrow

Saxophonist and composer Tom Braxton's latest release, "Endless Highway," takes you on the ride of your life. Joined by an impressive array of instrumentalists and vocalists, this recording is a toe-tapping, colorful, groove-oriented excursion with a sophisticated urban flavor that will make you feel like dancing and singing all day long. "Endless Highway," his second release on the San Diego-based Pacific Coast Jazz label, lifts Braxton to a new level of artistry as he pays homage to his friend and mentor, professional basketball player and bass guitarist, Wayman Tisdale, who recently lost his battle with cancer. Wayman was recently inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and Tom will be performing at the October 21st Gala in honor of the occasion. The highly anticipated new recording is scheduled for national release on October 6, 2009. To hear audio clips, visit Tom Braxton's website at: http://www.TomBraxton.com

"We're excited to have the opportunity to represent Tom Braxton's most impressive CD to date," says Donna Nichols, founder and president of Pacific Coast Jazz. "This new disc highlights Braxton as a composer, producer and arranger along with six of his original compositions that feature his effortless transition from soprano, alto and tenor saxophones to showcasing his versatility on piano, keyboards and flute." Nichols' label has teamed up with publicist Joy Foster of SV Media Relations and radio promoter Cliff Gorov at All That Jazz for access to international media buying and radio promotion.

Braxton has shared the stage with such artists as George Duke, Kirk Whalum, Jonathan Butler, Jeff Golub, Marcus Miller and Luther Vandross along with opening concerts for Norman Brown, Boney James, Dave Brubeck, Cab Calloway, David Benoit and The Crusaders. He has been featured in CBS's The Saturday Early Show, BET's Jazz Central, CNN, NBC's Inside Stuff and many others. Without a doubt, "Endless Highway" will drive Tom Braxton to the top of the charts while we take a trip with his inspiring tunes at home or on the road. So get ready to pack your bags, roll down the windows and crank up the volume in the "Braxton tradition." "Creating music that brings people joy is my mission in life," says Tom. Looks like he has accomplished his mission on "Endless Highway."

Tom Braxton understands his purpose on earth is to create music that touches our hearts. That's why Jazz Review calls Braxton, "...one of smooth jazz's most prolific saxophonists...with all the required tools to become a major force." A seasoned performer, who knows how to charm audiences of all ages, Braxton has his own distinctive and recognizable sound which incorporates elements of Jazz, Latin, Funk and R&B and leaves listeners spellbound, filled with a sense of joy as his music swirls through your soul.

But jazz didn't always come easy growing up in the dusty plains of Lubbock, Texas where it all began for Tom Braxton. As unlikely an environment as it was for a boy to dream of being a jazz musician, Tom fortunately had a direct link to this creative art form through his dad, James ("J.T.") Braxton. "I have to credit my dad with connecting me to jazz at an early age. He introduced me to all the jazz legends: Lester Young, Miles, Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Stitt, Getz, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins and many more. He would share how he had heard Count Basie and Duke's original bands and the great Ella Fitzgerald. He put the alto sax in my hands in the 6th grade, after I had been playing piano for two years. At the age of 90, my dad still plays his tenor sax and violin everyday, and he's still gigging!" After graduating valedictorian from high school, Tom attended Texas Tech University on track and music scholarships. "I love to run, and the 200, 400 and 1600-meter relay were my best events." This fact explains his driving energy and stamina on stage today.

During his college years, Braxton formed the jazz-fusion band "No Compromise" which toured the southwest and opened concerts for Joe Sample, Stanley Clarke, George Howard and many others. The band performed many of Tom's original compositions, which helped to fine-tune his writing style. Tom decided to launch his solo career after graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music/Performance degree. His first act of business was to join forces with keyboardist and producer Bernard Wright to release his solo debut album, "Your Move." "The highlight of my first release was having the opportunity to record a duet with long-time friend Kirk Whalum on the song 'Peacemaker.'" Bernard Wright not only produced Braxton's first CD, but also was instrumental in connecting him to a gifted musician/producer who would elevate Tom to the national touring circuit, Wayman Tisdale. "I have to credit Bernard Wright with getting me the gig with Wayman. I flew to Sacramento and played with Wayman where we opened a concert for the Yellowjackets. I'll never forget it . . . it was 1992!! Except for a few years off when my sons were born, I became a regular part of Wayman's group." Wayman Tisdale was quoted saying, "When I'm on the road, Tom is the saxophonist I want to have with me. I love that sweet sound he gets on the horn."

Braxton's solo career continued with his second album, "Katallasso," that mixed memorable, easy funk melodies with some unique production touches. In April 1998, the CD was released internationally on Positive Music Records and featured the talents of Kirk Whalum, Paul Jackson Jr., Bill Maxwell and Bill Cantos. The next two albums took a brief departure from mainstream smooth jazz by connecting with Tom's spiritual side. In 1999, he released an instrumental praise and worship CD entitled "Face to Face" followed two years later with the release of a Christmas album, "Comfort and Joy," that presented Braxton's fresh arrangements of traditional and contemporary holiday favorites. His friend and mentor, Wayman Tisdale, produced his fifth release, "Bounce," for Dave Koz's label, Rendezvous Entertainment. "I remember Wayman approached me with the idea of doing a recording together," said Braxton. "I was very excited about the project and the creative juices began to flow. We had a lot of fun in the studio playing with grooves and melodies and as a result the CD, 'Bounce,' was born."

In 2007, Tom added a new CD to his discography, "Imagine This," on the Pacific Coast Jazz label. "The album kicks off with one of my favorite songs, 'Peg,' by Steely Dan which is a band I've always admired. I wanted to cover that song for years and I when I finally got the opportunity, I was thrilled to include the unique vocal work of Kevin Whalum." SmoothJazz.com wrote, "(Tom Braxton)... absolutely blows me away with his album 'Imagine This.' I'm imagining that this will be the big breakout release for a career that is really kicking into high gear."

In 2009, on the heels of finishing his next Pacific Coast Jazz label CD release, shocking news hit Braxton when Wayman Tisdale lost his battle with cancer. "Wayman was a gifted musician and a great friend that I will always miss. I stood on his right side for over seventeen years and it was my goal to make him sound great every night. Through the years, I became good at blending my sound with his, a valued skill I learned while in his band. Wayman's passing is a reminder of our mortality and it has made me even more determined to live my life to fulfill the purpose God has for me."

Tom's latest project, "Endless Highway," highlights Braxton as a composer, producer and arranger along with six of his original compositions that feature his effortless transition from soprano, alto and tenor saxophones to showcasing his versatility on piano, keyboards and flute. Bursting with exhilarating grooves and sizzling hot horn arrangements, "Endless Highway" manages to lift Braxton to a new level of artistry and is a testament to the many challenges Tom has faced along his highway of life. He hopes it will help others as they continue down their own road. "We are all on this road of life, moving at our own pace, experiencing the smooth places where you can relax and the rough roads that can challenge and discourage you. But we must never forget how important it is to enjoy the ride!"

Reissue of the Month - "Friedrich Gulda & Klaus Weiss: It's All One"

CD Reissue of the Month
Friedrich Gulda & Klaus Weiss: "It's All One" (MPS/Universal) 2009

Originally recorded in February 1970 at MPS Studio, Villingen, Germany.
Produced & engineered by Hans-Georg Brunner-Schwer.
CD Reissue produced by Matthias Künnecke for Universal's JazzClub series.
Thanks to the expertise of album designer Knut Schotteldreier, the booklet keeps Horst Schade's original liner notes, also reproducing the original LP cover by Heinz Bähr.
In the USA, you can order it from DustyGroove store through this link:

That's what they say about the album:
"Amazing stuff -- and one of the hippest records ever cut by pianist Friedrich Gulda! Unlike some of his other more modernist efforts, this one's got a really free swing to it -- and it features a spare stripped-down approach that has Gulda's work on piano and "electra piano" backed only by the drums of Klaus Weiss. If you know Weiss' playing, you'll know that he's a heck of a player -- one of the hardest swinging players in Germany during the 70s, with a rich range of styles that included funk, soul jazz, and hard bop playing. The best numbers on the album feature Gulda playing these amazing lines on "electra piano", with Weiss grooving underneath -- either hitting a modal groove, a bossa one, or in some cases a freer beat to match Gulda's solos. The record kicks off with the four-part "Suite For Piano, Electra Piano, & Drums" -- which has two great groovers, the "bossa nova" and "finale" section". It also features the more avant "Meditation III", plus the excellent "Blues Fantasy", which starts out free, then rolls into a great modal funky part with great electric keyboard lines!"

Color, Dolby, DTS Surround Sound, DVD, Live, NTSC
172 minutes
Firstly, I must tell you: I was there! And I felt deeply moved. It's a joy to remember all those thrilling moments on this 2-DVD set, although it doesn't sounds nor looks better than the "Live at Montreux 2006" DVD, also available through Eagle/ST2.
Anyway, when an artist of the stature of Quincy Jones celebrates his 75th birthday you can be sure it's going to be quite a party.

The show took place on July 14th 2008 at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival, an event with which Quincy Jones has a long and rich history, and the cream of musical talent turned up to serenade "Q" on this very special occasion. The main concert lasted over two and a half hours and the musicians then spilled out into the bars and cafes of Montreux with the music still going strong as the sun was coming up the next morning! Backing on all tracks provided by the Montreux In The House Band: Greg Phillinganes (keyboards), David Delhomme (keyboards), Paul Jackson Jr. (guitar), Nathan East (bass), John Robinson (drums) & Paulinho da Costa (percussion, heard very very low in the final mix) plus the Swiss Army Big Band conducted by Pepe Lienhard.

The highlight is the performance of the fabulous a cappela group Naturally 7 (amazing renditions of "Billie Jean" and "Wall of Sound"). There are also outstanding appearances by Herbie Hancock, Patti Austin, Al Jarreau, James Moody (a lovely duet with Patti on his classic "Moody's Mood"), Chaka Khan and Curtis Stigers. Not so memorable are the songs delivered by Nana Mouskouri, Petula Clark and Freda Payne, none of them in top form. Quincy attended the concert seated in the audience and only jumped to the stage for the finale, when "Stuff Like That" (co-written by Quincy, Eric Gale, Steve Gadd, Richard Tee) ended in a big mess, with three drummers (among them Billy Cobham) performing at the same time!

This 2-DVD set also includes the bonus feature “Thank Q” with behind-the-scenes footage and images from a party at Claude Nobs' marvelous house in Montreux Hills.

Quincy Jones, the acclaimed arranger, composer, producer, and bandleader, has left his signature mark in the realms of jazz, pop, soul, gospel, R&B, classical, world, and blues. He has nurtured a countless array of talents, including the late Michael Jackson, whom he helped develop from a talented kid into an international superstar. 2008 was an exceptionally special year for Jones, as he was named an Ambassador at the Grammys, and served as Artistic Advisor for the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. It seems only fitting that he would enjoy such a riveting performance to honor him in his 75th year.

"JacoFest", a tribute to Jaco Pastorius

JACOFEST - A Tribute to Jaco Pastorius at Iridium
Tue - Sun, Oct. 22 - 25, 2009

The late great bassist-composer Jaco Pastorius, a dear friend whom I first met in LA and later (unfortunately for the last time) in Brazil at the Rio/Monterey Jazz Festival in August 1980, when he autographed many Weather Report albums of my collection, was an undeniable force on contemporary jazz during the '70s as well as a towering influence on two generations of musicians. Now, this revolutionary genius of the electric bass will be feted at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York from October 22-25.

Included in this all-star gala, produced by impresario Charles Carlini, are Pastorius colleagues and former bandmates like trumpeters Miles Evans and Lew Soloff, saxophonists Alex Foster and Butch Thomas, trombonist David Bargeron, keyboardists Gil Goldstein and Delmar Brown, guitarist Billy "Spaceman" Patterson and drummer Kenwood Dennard. Featured bass players are Victor Bailey and T.M. Stevens. Other featured players include trumpeter Tim Ouimette, percussionist Pedro Martinez, bassist Andrew Sheron, and vocalists Falu and Gracie Finnigan.

For tickets, please call the box office at (212) 582-2121 or visit Iridium Jazz Club.

CD of the Month - "QSF Plays Brubeck"

CD of the Month
Quartet San Francisco: "QSF Plays Brubeck" (ViolinJazz Recordings) 2009

A complete masterpiece! Superb performances of Dave Brubeck's outstanding works - plus Paul Desmond's "Take Five" - by the Quartet San Francisco (Jeremy Cohen & Alisa Rose on violins, Keith Lawrence on viola, Michelle Djokic on cello). Magnificent & highly creative arrangements mostly by Cohen, except for the no less inspired scores on "The Duke" (by Matthew Brubeck), "Bluette" (by the underrated Larry Dunlap, an unsung hero of the California jazz scene since Flora Purim's "Stories To Tell" days in the early 70s, having produced/arranged Mark Murphy's Grammy-nominee sumptuous "September Ballads" album) and "Forty Days" (scored by Robert Gilmore).
Produced by Andrea Liguori, masterfully engineered by Judy Kirschner @ Skywalker Sound Studio & Screaming Lizard Productions in Petaluma, California, from July 31 to August 3, 2009.
Beautiful digipack artwork by Gwen Terpstra, using a painting by Frank Stella on the front cover.
"I got a kick out of hearing these talented musicians interpret my music in such an inventive way," my dear friend Dave Brubeck writes in the liner notes. "It's an honor for a composer to have his music re-visited by a group such as Quartet San Francisco." No doubt about it.
One of the best albums released in 2009!
