Celebrated pianist and composer Randy Weston (whose only date for CTI, "Blue Moses", is one of my favorite albums) has been at the forefront of musical innovation for over six decades in the integration of African and jazz music. Join Weston and moderator Dr. Lewis Porter for a conversation that traverses Brooklyn, Marrakech and the whole world of jazz in between.

Cindy Blackman's new adventures

Cindy Blackman left the rock band of Lenny Kravitz last June and now prefers playing in dimly lit jazz clubs, as Patrick Cole reports (Bloomberg). Jazz "is the highest form of music that you can play because of the creative requirements", says Blackman who will release her new CD at New York's Jazz Standard in January 21st. The excellent drummer played with Kravitz for 15 years, earning quite some reputation, especially through her role of a female drummer making it in a men's world in the video "Are You Gonna Be My Way?". Kravitz hired her in 1993 after she had auditioned through the telephone. Besides playing jazz, she plans to also continue working in rock contexts.

"Opus Samba" - All Music Guide review

Fabio Fonseca Trio: “Opus Samba” (JSR 6054)
Review by Alex Henderson for All Music Guide http://www.allmusic.com/
Rating: ****

Brazilian jazz isn't the first thing that comes to mind when one is discussing the Hammond B-3, an instrument closely identified with the gritty soul-jazz of organ masters like Jack McDuff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Shirley Scott (who was also a fine pianist), Jimmy McGriff and, of course, the seminal Jimmy Smith. But Brazilian jazz and the B-3 are an appealing combination on Opus Samba, which Arnaldo DeSouteiro produced for organist Fabio Fonseca in Brazil. Fonseca (who is joined by Pedro Leão on electric bass and Mac William on drums and percussion) also plays some electric keyboards on this 54-minute CD, but his B-3 is the main attraction. An interesting variety of influences are heard on Opus Samba, ranging from Charles Earland (one of Jimmy Smith's most creative disciples) to Azymuth to percussionist Airto Moreira's Creed Taylor-produced CTI recordings of the '70s. DeSouteiro, in fact, has cited Taylor as a major influence, and Opus Samba is a melodic, samba-friendly album that — although not overly slick — is accessible and easy to absorb. Accessibility serves Fonseca well on his own compositions as well as an intriguing arrangement of Stevie Wonder's "Too High" (which has no problem lending itself to a Brazilian jazz/fusion setting), and it serves him well on "A Mulher de 15 Metros" (which features Brazilian singer Ithamara Koorax and is the only vocal offering on a mostly instrumental album). Taylor, of course, has his detractors, who complain that he had a tendency to overproduce in the '60s and '70s, and to be sure, there were times when Taylor was too slick for his own good. But when Taylor (who produced plenty of five-star classics for CTI) achieved the right balance of accessibility and jazz-minded spontaneity, he really excelled as a producer. And DeSouteiro, much to his credit, achieves that type of balance on Opus Samba, which demonstrates that the B-3 can be a major asset in Brazilian jazz.

Introducing Typhanie Monique

Howard Reich introduces the singer Typhanie Monique who sees the year 2007 as one of the busiest so far for her (Chicago Tribune). She recorded a duet CD with the guitarist Neal Alger and performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival where she attracted a standing-only crowd at one of the side stages. She performed in Moscow and will again perform there in January/February and thinks about a follow-up CD.

Bassist Michael Manson Signs with Nu Groove & Hits Top Twenty on R&R

Michael Manson has teamed up with recording industry veteran David Chackler to release Up Front on Chackler’s Nu Groove label. Nu Groove has recently created an industry buzz with R&R charting releases featuring some of the hottest contemporary jazz talent of today. The Up Front CD officially hit store shelves nationwide January 22, 2008. The first single, “Coming Right at Ya," is currently in the Top Twenty of the Radio and Records (R&R) Charts.

“I’m really excited about this release. Manson is a dynamic player and one of the most electrifying soloists in contemporary jazz. We’re confident that the incredible R&B grooves in Up Front will expose Michael to an even wider audience,” said Chackler. (Michael's previous CD, Bring It On, will also be available under the Nu Groove label.)

*****
A native of Chicago, IL, Michael Manson joined City Lights and began performing regularly on Chicago’s jazz circuit in the late 80s. In the mid-90s, Manson joined Brian Culbertson in support of the City Lights CD (Long Night Out) and continued to play the Chicago jazz scene with bandmate Steve Cole. An invitation to play the Montreux Casino Lights Festival in 1999 would put Manson on the road to national fame. Sharing the stage with the likes of Boney James, George Duke and Kirk Whalum at this festival led to connections that blossomed into a spot performing on the Montreux Jazz Tour. Since that time, the bassist has rapidly emerged as one of the new stars of contemporary jazz displaying his remarkable dexterity and command of the 5-string and piccolo basses.

Michael displays his remarkable gift of musical versatility, passion and precision both in concert and on recordings. As a producer/composer, he penned his first Top 10 hit “Outer Drive,” followed by the R&R charting track “Just Feelin’ It” and most recently, the Top 20 “Coming Right At Ya.” With both unrelenting power and laid-back grace, this recording artist’s third CD entitled Up Front went on sale January 22nd and was released under the quickly expanding Nu Groove Records label. Guest artists on the new CD include: Norman Brown, Steve Cole, George Duke, Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, Jeff Lorber, Najee and Paul Jackson Jr.

Regarding the release of Up Front, Manson said, “In making Up Front, there were moments of great joy, extreme focus, and some very exciting performances. We've taken some artistic license and "jammed" a little more on this project. I've made some new friends who have shared their gifts and old friends who chimed in as well. I'm very excited to share this with people who love music. Enjoy.”

Michael Manson is managed and booked by C Sharp Consulting, Ltd

LA Times Obituary:
by Jocelyn Y. Stewart
February 23, 2008

Teo Macero, whose innovative work as a producer of jazz albums in the 1960s and '70s helped define the recorded sound of artists such as Miles Davis and redefine the meaning of studio production, died Tuesday at a hospital in Riverhead, N.Y. He was 82.

Macero, who lived in Quogue, N.Y., had been ill for some time, said his stepdaughter, Suzie Lightbourn of Morristown, N.J. The cause of death was not given.

The thousands of recordings produced by Macero include the original cast album of "A Chorus Line," Simon and Garfunkel's album "The Graduate" and numerous gold records.

Beginning with his work at Columbia Records in the mid-1950s, Macero helped make some of the most enduring jazz recordings of the era. He was musical editor for Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus.

Later he became a producer and exerted an even greater influence on the music.

For many years he produced Davis, including albums such as "Bitches Brew," "In a Silent Way" and "Sketches of Spain." Although Davis had the final say, Macero was given wide latitude -- and he used all the space given him to express his creativity.

"I mean Miles never came to the editing room," Macero said in an interview posted on Perfect Sound Forever, an online music magazine. "In 25 or 30 years he was there maybe four or five times. So I had carte blanche to maneuver, do things with his music that I couldn't do with other people's."

Macero spliced tape, used overdubbing and pitch manipulations and employed electronic effects. Columbia Records sometimes had to create the equipment Macero needed in production. The "instant playback" allowed a passage to be played back in defined intervals.

In those days, such techniques were not the common fare they are today.

"Even back then, we were always experimenting," Macero said in a 2007 edition of Remix magazine. "That was half the fun, to see what you could do with some of this stuff. It didn't matter if it was a monaural or a two-track tape machine -- if I could help make the music sound different or adventurous, I was right there."

Macero sometimes had to weave in "bits and pieces" of music that Davis had recorded on cassettes.

"Miles would say, 'Put this in that new album we're working on,'" Macero said in the Perfect Sound Forever interview. "I'd say, 'Look, where the hell is it going to go? I don't know.' He says, 'Oh, you know.'"

Their collaboration was legendary. But in later years, when the unedited recordings of some of Davis' works were released, some critics complained that Macero had been too heavy-handed. A writer for Slate magazine referred to Macero's work as "post-production meddling." Macero had strong views of some of the reissues.

"They're discovering the things that we threw out and they're putting them in," he said in the Boston Herald in 2001. "I wouldn't have anything to do with it. It's just a lot of blowing. What is that?"

Macero was born in Glens Fall, N.Y., on Oct. 30, 1925. His parents owned a restaurant, said his sister, Lydia Edwards. Early in his life, he took up the saxophone, and music became his passion.

After serving in the Navy in the mid-1940s, Macero earned a bachelor's degree in 1951 and a master's degree in 1953 from Juilliard School of Music. He received Guggenheim Fellowships twice in the 1950s and played saxophone with Mingus and many others.

The list of artists he worked with as producer includes Dave Brubeck, Mahalia Jackson and Leonard Bernstein. After more than 20 years at Columbia, Macero left and continued to work as a producer. He also composed for several ballet companies and was a composer and conductor with several symphony orchestras.

In more recent years Macero worked with Wallace Roney, Geri Allen and Robert Palmer and composed for television and film.

In addition to Lightbourn and Edwards, Macero is survived by his wife, Jeanne.

Siegfried Loch at ACT

Siegfried Loch was a top manager in pop music for 30 years, then founded the ACT record label, fulfilling a life-long dream: to become a jazz producer, as he tells Thomas Lindemann (Welt Online). He actually had planned to found that label in 1962 but then was contacted by Al Bennett, the owner of Liberty Records, a company which just had acquired the Blue Note label (founded by two expatriate Germans). Later he worked as European boss of Atlantic Records. Nobody understood his decision to quit that job in order to found his own little jazz label in 1992. With ACT he is independent; he only produces music he is convinced of. He was offered to release records by some established artists, but it's more fun to discover unknown artists and give them a chance. Loch has a lot of respect for Manfred Eicher, the other big German record boss, and his ECM label. There is a generation of young jazz musicians in Germany who can easily hold their own in Europe's jazz scene, musicians such as the trumpeter Till Brönner or the pianist Michael Wollny.

The Pat Metheny Trio Concert will feature Christian McBride on bass and Antonio Sanchez on drums. The same trio is featured on seventeen-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Metheny’s new Nonesuch CD: Day Trip, which will be released on Tuesday, January 29. The new CD is the legendary guitarist’s first recording with Christian McBride and Antonio Sanchez.

This trio was formed by Metheny in 2002 and has played concerts all around the globe with performances in Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa and all across the United States and Canada. The group finally made it into the studio to record this music on a single day off during one of their most recent U.S. tours. All ten tracks on Day Trip are original Metheny compositions, including “Is This America? (Katrina 2005),” a song about the devastation in New Orleans, and “The Red One,” which first appeared on the John Scofield and Pat Metheny album I Can See Your House From Here on Blue Note in 1994.

Over the course of three decades, guitarist Pat Metheny has set himself apart from the jazz mainstream, expanding and blurring boundaries and musical styles. His body of work includes seventeen GRAMMY® Awards in nine separate categories (breaking the record for multi-category wins); a series of influential trio recordings; award winning solo albums; scores for hit Hollywood motion pictures; and collaborations and duets with major artists such as Ornette Coleman, Steve Reich, Charlie Haden, Jim Hall and many others. His band, the Pat Metheny Group, founded in 1977, is the only ensemble in history to win GRAMMYs® for seven consecutive releases.

In addition to his own critically acclaimed recordings, Christian McBride is known as the first-call bassist for a vast array of jazz’s most influential artists. He has played with Diana Krall, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Joshua Redman, Jack DeJohnette, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, and Ray Brown’s “Superbass” with John Clayton, among others—as well as pop, soul, and classical musicians like Kathleen Battle, Carly Simon, Sting, Queen Latifa and the late James Brown.

Antonio Sanchez has been playing with the Pat Metheny Group and Pat Metheny Trio since 2002. He has also performed and recorded with Pacquito D’Rivera, Danílo Perez, the late Michael Brecker (with whom he recorded the GRAMMY® winning album Wide Angles), David Sanchez, Charlie Haden, John Patitucci, Chris Potter, Avishai Cohen, Marcus Roberts, Dave Samuels, Chick Corea, Claudia Acuña, and Luciana Souza, among others. Sanchez’s debut recording as a leader, Migration (Camjazz), was released earlier this year.

Keith Jarrett Trio's box set

25 years ago, pianist Keith Jarrett started his trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, playing "The Masquerade Is Over" in a Manhattan recording studio without rehearsal or any arrangement, as Charles J. Gans reports (San Francisco Chronicle). They had no idea that this partnership would last for 25 years. To celebrate the anniversary, the German ECM label releases a CD box containing the first sessions from 1983 with the trio playing mostly standards as well as some freer improvisations by the group. Over that time, Jarrett has not worked with any other jazz musician with the exception of Paul Motian who subbed for DeJohnette in 1992. At the time, playing standards for a musician of Jarrett's standing was "a radical notion", writes Gans, and Jarrett himself adds, "Jazz musicians don't have to always break down doors, there's music inside the rooms too."

New projects by Azymuthians

Two founding members of the Azymuth group are preparing new solo projects.
Keyboard wiz José Roberto Bertrami has just finished his second album as a leader for Joe Davis' London-based label Far Out. The follow-up to "Things Are Different" (2001) includes such guests as bassist Alex Rocha, drummer Victor Bertrami, percussion monster Sidinho Moreira, multiple reedman José Carlos "Bigorna" Ramos, trombonist Marlon, plus strings arrangements (on two tracks) by Leandro Braga.
Electric bass master Alex Malheiros is putting the final touches on his long-awaited follow-up to the EP "The Wave" (released in 2007, in Europe). This will be his debut solo album on Far Out, after an excellent session for Milestone in 1985 titled "Atlantic Forest" and some independent albums in the 90s that never received widespread distribution. The new CD features his daughter Sabrina Malheiros, whose second effort for Far Out will be coming out this Spring, featuring Bertrami on keyboards and guitarist Arthur Verocai's arrangements.
A new Azymuth album (recorded in 2006) will finally see the light of the day this coming Summer, when the group will be touring Japan together with Marcos Valle and Quarteto Em Cy.

Nils Petter Molvaer's comments

The Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer is not amused by internet music pirates and the buying habits of internet users, as he tells Christian Broecking (Berliner Zeitung). Recently he learned that a Russian website offered all of his music for just 2 Dollars. His recordings take a lot of financial input and he needs to be reimbursed. Molvaer had his first success with the Munich-based label ECM, but founded his own record label Sula four years ago in order to retain all the rights to his music. On his next CD he plans to include a web link for the buyers who are entitled to download seven or eight more further pieces without additional costs. He thinks the artist should decide when and how to give away his music.

Sigi Busch "plays" Wilhelm Busch

The German double bassist Sigi Busch's newest project is a musical setting of verses by Wilhelm Busch, the 19th century German satirical poet, as Marlies Schnaibel reports (Märkische Allgemeine). When he found six Busch volumes, Sigi - whom I had the honor to meet for the first time at the 1992 IAJE Conference in Miami, when we took part of the Panel Session "Global Jazz Education" - was again fascinated by the poems' innate rhythms and melodies. He selected verses not from the well known "Max und Moritz", but from later, lesser known volumes. Originally Sigi Busch planned to use another singer with the quartet of guitar, piano, bass and drums, but then he decided to fill that role himself. A CD release of the music is planned.
