Rockin' Johnny Burgin emerged on the Chicago blues scene in the early 1990s and became one of the hottest bands, working 7 nights per week. Burgin has proven time and again to be the most obsessive guitarist working in the westside Chicago blues vein that I've ever seen (think Magic Sam, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Fenton Robinson, Hip Linkchain etc). I recall one writer a while back opining that Burgin "studies blues like its astrophysics."
Whether that is true or not, the point is that he has truly mastered the nuances and licks of mostly obscure Chicago blues guitar masters - the ones that all other modern guitar players have over-looked. One might say he's picked up these esoteric musical scraps and pieces and collaged together his own style, all while also infusing own playful intensity in the mix.
For over 20 years Burgin's showmanship and infectious energy has pleased hardcore blues fanatics around the world, as well as causal newcomers. But the depth of what he is playing, in all honestly, has a tendency to go over many people's heads. For those in the know, his musical references are as vast as anyone I've personally ever heard. And he can switch from Robert Jr. Lockwood to Bobby King to Fenton Robinson to Little Smokey Smothers to Johnny B Moore all within one 48 bar solo and come out sounding none other than Rockin' Johnny Burgin.
Can you tell this guy absolutely astounds me? Please join me for three incredible shows this weekend.
