These are the complete results of the 36th Annual Jazz Station Award conducted by the Los Angeles-based jazz journalist, jazz historian & jazz educator Arnaldo DeSouteiro. Mr. DeSouteiro is a voting member of NARAS-Grammy, as well as of the Jazz Journalists Association and the Los Angeles Jazz Society. He has produced over 530 sessions, according to the All Music Guide website. For more details and a small bio, please check:
Ahmad Jamal (pictured above), Ron Carter, Mark Egan, Mike Longo, Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Randy Brecker, Larry Goldings, Hermeto Pascoal, Branford Marsalis, David Sanborn, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Beata Pater, Duo Nazario and the late Kenny Wheeler (who passed away last September) are among the top artists of the year.
Only albums recorded or released in 2014 were eligible.
We regret that some legendary musicians, such as harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans and master trombonist Urbie Green, have decided to retire and are no longer recording.
Some of our favorite artists, like Phil Woods, Kenny Garrett, Gene Bertoncini and Airto Moreira, have not released new albums this year, and therefore they were not eligible either. And our adored singer Diana Krall was forced to postpone the release date of her new album (originally planned for October 2014 and now re-scheduled for February 2015) due to health problems, as previously reported here on this blog.
We've lost many great jazzmen that have passed away in 2014, and they are listed in the end of this post.
