Peter Herbolzheimer Rhythm Combination & Brass: "Latin Groove" (Koala) 1987
Produced by Peter Herbolzheimer (1935-2010), the late German arranger-composer-trombonist-big band leader who conducts his fiery orchestra in this latin-tinged session, recorded in 1986 in the cities of Baden-Baden and Cologne.
Featuring trumpeter Ack van Rooyen, trombonist Jiggs Whigham (who recorded a fabulous duet album with Gene Bertoncini some years ago), woodwind master John Ruocco, guitarist Peter Tiehuis, keyboardists Thomas Clausen & Jorg Reiter, bassists Dave King & Mads Vinding, drummer Bruno Castellucci, and percussion aces Freddy Santiago (who recorded alongside Trilok Gurtu on Airto Moreira's "Brazilian Mass") and Dom Um Romão, who suggested many songs for the repertoire. Among them, Jorge Ben's "Zazueira," which he had previously recorded with Astrud Gilberto & Stanley Turrentine on "Gilberto with Turrentine" for CTI back in 1971.
The program also includes three other Brazilian tunes: Edu Lobo's "Casa Forte" and "Prá Dizer Adeus," and Ivan Lins' "Começar de Novo" aka "The Island." Herbolzheimer himself contributes several originals, such as "Blues in Latin" and "Penúltima Batucada." It's also worth to mention his explosive arrangement for Chick Corea's fusion classic "Spain," on which Dom Um can be heard doing his typical mouth percussion effects.
