COVER
Paul Motian -- Drummer Paul Motian is as much a sound painter as a keeper of pulses. For his latest recording as a leader on ECM, Motian convened a special trio at New York's Village Vanguard, his favorite jazz venue. He continues to excel in the free ballad genre he helped invent, often using his own compositions as vehicles for profound soloing and dynamic group interplay.
FEATURES
Art Blakey's Legacy -- DownBeat talks with generations of musicians influenced by Blakey the drummer, the bandleader, the teacher and the man, 20 years after his passing.
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings -- Raw power, rhythmic swagger, brassy horns and supreme melodic command have made Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings a fixture in the canon of soul music since their humble beginnings nearly a decade ago.
The Bad Plus -- The progressive power trio has created its first CD of all original instrumental music, recalling the live-room feel and relaxed vibe of classic '50s and '60s jazz recordings. Their group sound embraces diversity as strength, ranging from the gentle and melodic to the fierce and abstract.
