CD of the Day
"Erica-Chiquinho et les Show-Rio Brazil 77" (Vadim Music) 1977/2005
Total time: 37m18s
A rare European session from Rio ex-patriots Erica Norimar and Chiquinho Timoteo, recorded in Paris back in 1977 for the micro French label Sonopresse, and reissued in 2005 by another French company, Vadim Music, thanks to the efforts of executive producer Thierry Balzan.
Using a vinyl copy as the master source, the CD offers no information about the exact recording dates and doesn't credits any of the composers.
Erica Norimar, who did the soft wordless vocals on the title track from Deodato's "Love Island" album that same year, shows a stronger voice here, shining specially on a Portuguese version (originally written by Aloysio de Oliveira for Carmen Miranda) of Glenn Miller's 1941 hit "Chatanooga Choo Choo" (with Chiquinho playing banjo!) as well as on Dorival Caymmi's "Vatapá" and João Bosco/Aldir Blanc's "Kid Cavaquinho," being less successful in an uninspired rendition of Jobim's "Ligia."
Chiquinho Timóteo also sings, plays several kinds of guitar (acoustic, electric, 12-string) and even employs cavaquinho on the instrumental tour-de-force Waldir Azevedo's "Brasileirinho." Among the other musicians are the late pianist Mozart Terra, bassist Helio (who recorded on Tania Maria's "Via Brazil" albums for Barclay), drummer Luis Carlos, trumpeter Paulinho, percussionists Clovis & Manoel Paulista, plus two French instrumentalists: Alda (accordion) and Pascal (sax & flute).
