Francisco Aguabella is a legendary figure in the contemporary Afro-Cuban Lucumi tradition. A native of Matanzas, Cuba, Aguabella gained notice for his secular drumming in Havana nightclub bands, and for his mastery of the complex styles of Afro-Cuban ceremonial drumming. He is a world class artist, who has performed with such legends as Tito Puente, Carlos Santana, Poncho Sanchez, Mongo Santamario, Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. In 1992, he received a National Endowment of The Arts Fellowship in the area of folk arts, and has been lauded by the cities of San Francisco, Miami, and Los Angeles. He is also the subject of a documentary by filmmaker Les Blank with Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Studios. Lovers of Latin jazz will not want to miss one of Aquabella's too rare appearances at Steamers!
