Art Farmer: "From Vienna With Art" (MPS)
When jazz legend Art Farmer was living in Vienna, he recorded this groovy, Latin-flavored album (in a single session on September 7, 1970, at MPS Studio in Villingen) with guest star Jimmy Heath, who plays tenor sax, soprano sax and, for the first time in a recording session, also flute, on Tom McIntosh's somber ballad "The Day After." Farmer, who plays flugelhorn exclusively throughout the album, also recorded Heath's funky classic "The Gap Sealer" and two great tunes by longtime Austrian pianist, Fritz Pauer ("Con-Fab" and "Whole Tone Stomp"). Jimmy Woode (bass) and Erich Bachtragl (drums) complete the rhythm section.
This digitally remastered reissue, produced by Matthias Kunnecke for Universal Germany and released only in Europe, comes in digipak cover format, including the original photos as well as the LP liner notes by Farmer himself and German jazz historian Joachim-Ernst Berendt, who produced the session.
