Mark Murphy: "Murphy's Mood" (Arkadia) 2009
Filmed in 1980 for the "Ad Lib" TV series, includes four short songs ("You've Proven Your Point," "Parker's Mood," "Again" and "Farmer's Market") by my favorite male jazz singer ever, my dear friend of 25 years Mark Murphy, plus six numbers by trumpeters Pete & Conte Candoli, who reigned for several decades in the Californian jazz scene.
Both Murphy & The Candoli Brothers are backed by bassist Monty Budwig (miscredited Marty Budwig on the screen) and drummer Chiz Harris, with Bill Mays playing Fender Rhodes on Murphy's tracks while Ross Tompkins uses the acoustic piano with the Candolis, who are also joined by guitarist Joe Diorio.
False applauses, fool interviews with host Phil Moore, poor sound quality. But some very nice music making it worthy as a "document."
Hope the first "official" Mark Murphy DVD, which is being prepared for over two years, could be released soon.
Also can't wait for the upcoming DVDs by former CTI stars Stanley Turrentine and Esther Phillips that the Arkadia label is announcing for release soon.
