Daniel Murray: "Universos Sonoros Para Violão e Tape" (Canto Discos) 2009
One of the most adventurous, complex, creative & challenging albums recorded by a Brazilian artist in this century. Murray and his main collaborator in this project, avant-garde master Lelo Nazario (responsible for the techical coordination, editing, mixing & mastering, besides his contribution as composer of the opening track, "Balada Unidimensional," a masterpiece of electro-acoustic music) set a new standard, a very personal one indeed, for the contemporary guitar repertoire. Outstanding performances of great works by Nazario, Panayiotis Kokorasm, Mikhail Malt, Silvio Ferraz, Antonio Ribeiro, Sergio Kafejian, and Flo Menezes.
Recorded in May 2008 by Carlos Akamine in the large room (fantastic natural ambiance!) at the Cachuera Studio, in São Paulo, where, sometime ago, I had the privilege to produce a not yet released album by pianist Edu Toledo with an all-star cast of São Paulo-based musicians which included Lelo Nazario's brother, drummer Zé Eduardo Nazário.
"Music is the art of expressing the meaning of sounds. This preamble is to say that the newness contributes to the elimination of the obscurity. Without invention, life does not exist, nothing flourishes," states Celso de Alencar on his enlightning liner notes.
