R.I.P.: Mat Mathews

(born June 18, 1924, Den Haag/Netherlands;
died Feb. 12, 2009, Rotterdam/Netherlands)

The Dutch accordionist Mat Mathews died February 12th in Rotterdam at the age of 84. He became well known as one of the few jazz accordionists, especially while he lived in New York between 1952 and 1964 where he recorded with Oscar Pettiford, Carmen McRae, Art Farmer, Percy Heath, Kenny Clarke and others. After his return to the Netherlands he arranged and produced music for television, radio and films.
