A Steinway Concert Jazz Artist, and jazz composer and clinician, Lenore Raphael has been called “Queen of swing” and “simply one of the best pianists in the jazz mainstream” by jazz writer John Gilbert. Born and raised in the Bronx, New York. She was a classical piano student until she heard a recording by the great trumpeter Clifford Brown and she then realized her real calling was jazz. Listening to the recordings of Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans she developed her swinging and lyrical style, but she has distinguished her voice as her own.
Playing mostly by ear, she was able to get some great gigs in New York but realizing that she needed more formal training she studied with pianists Mike Longo and Barry Harris and then was on her way to performing in larger venues and jazz festivals. Her performance at a tribute to Oscar Peterson during the IAJE convention in Toronto brought famed vocalist Jon Hendricks to say “She is one of the ‘baddest’ pianists out there.
Lenore has 5 CDs on the Swingin’ Fox label and her 6th CD “Class Act” has just been released. With top play on radio stations across the globe her 2007 CD “Invitation” was up for GRAMMY nomination consideration this year and was charted at #6 on the Roots Music Survey. Her original songs have been heard on Continental Airlines jazz stream and on the ASCAP jazz stream.
A recent tour of the United Kingdom with a stop at Ronnie Scott’s famed club in London brought Lenore a review that stated “Raphael is a highly inventive and rhythmic player” (..Sheila Tacey, The Stage Magazine). Lenore has performed at Jazz At Lincoln Center three times in New York City, and continues to tour performing at such top jazz venues as Arturo Sandoval’s club in Miami, , Dazzle in Denver, Birdland, Steinway Jazz Showcase in Scottsdale, S.S. Oosterdam Jazz Cruise Jazz In The Sangres festival, , East Coast Jazz Festival, Panasonic festival (NYC) and more.
Along the way, has performed with such jazz greats as Clark Terry, Al Grey, John Pizzarelli, Jr., Marlene VerPlanck, Harry Allen, Arnie Lawrence, Wycliffe Gordon, Ken Peplowski, legendary drummer Artt Frank and others.
