R.I.P.: Dave McKenna

Dave McKenna
(born May 30, 1930, Woonsocket/RI, USA;
died October 18, 2008, State College/PA, USA)

The pianist Dave McKenna died on the morning of October 18th after long illness at the age of 78. He started his career in Boston, then worked with the big bands of Charlie Ventura and Woody Herman. In the 1950s he lived in New York, performing with Stan Getz, but also with Bobby Hackett or Bob Wilber. In 1967 he moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he often performed as a solo pianist. He also played with musicians such as Ruby Braff and Scott Hamilton and appeared on television in shows featuring Rosemary Clooney and Tony Bennett.
In the 1980s, Dave's many fans could enjoy his magnificent medleys 6 nights a week at the Plaza Bar at the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston, where he was pianist-in-residence.
Although he was no longer performing the last few years, he always appreciated the support and kind words he has received over the years from his many fans all over the world.
